Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Eastern Turkey Encounters tour cover?
This 9-day tour explores Turkey's ancient east, starting and finishing in Istanbul. After a day in Istanbul visiting the Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and Hippodrome, you fly to Cappadocia for two nights in a cave hotel, exploring the fairy chimney rock formations, the Goreme Open Air Museum, and an underground city. The tour then drives to Mount Nemrut for the famous sunset over the colossal statues of the Kingdom of Commagene, before heading east to Sanliurfa to visit Gobekli Tepe, the world's oldest known monumental structure. The final full day takes you to Gaziantep for a boat trip on the Euphrates and the extraordinary Zeugma Mosaic Museum.
Where does the tour start and finish?
The tour starts and ends in Istanbul. Airport transfers are included on both the arrival and departure days. Two domestic flights are included: Istanbul to Cappadocia on day three, and Gaziantep back to Istanbul on day eight.
What is the group size?
Groups run with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12 travellers. Keeping things small means you can actually hear your guide and engage with the sites rather than shuffling through in a crowd.
What is included in the tour price?
Included are all accommodation, all transport and transfers, 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfer service, domestic flights between Istanbul and Cappadocia and between Gaziantep and Istanbul, the services of a local tour guide throughout, entrance fees to all sites in the itinerary, meals as listed, and a tipping kitty.
What is not included?
International flights, visa fees, travel insurance, meals outside the itinerary, drinks and personal expenses, and guide and driver gratuities are not included.
What makes Gobekli Tepe so significant?
Gobekli Tepe is considered the oldest known monumental structure in the world, estimated at 11,000 to 13,000 years old. This predates Stonehenge, the Pyramids of Giza, and even the invention of writing and pottery. Its T-shaped pillars carved with animals and abstract symbols have genuinely changed how we understand the development of human civilisation. Visiting it with an expert guide makes the scale of what you are looking at sink in.
Can I combine this with a western Turkey tour?
Yes. If you want to combine the east with the west of Turkey, Encounters Travel offers the Crossroads of Turkey tour as a companion option. Contact us to discuss combining itineraries.
Is this tour good value given it includes domestic flights?
We get it, you can find cheaper Turkey tours that stick to the well-trodden western circuit. This tour includes two domestic flights, entrance fees to every site, cave hotel accommodation in Cappadocia, and a dedicated local guide throughout. The eastern sites, particularly Gobekli Tepe and Mount Nemrut, are genuinely some of the most extraordinary places in the world and take real logistical effort to visit properly. You are not paying to be herded around; you are paying to see things most visitors to Turkey never reach.
How many meals are included?
Eight breakfasts and five dinners are included. Lunches are at your own expense, giving you flexibility to explore local restaurants and street food at each stop.
Are entrance fees to sites included?
Yes. Entrance fees to all sites mentioned in the itinerary are included in your tour price. This covers major sites such as the Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia, Goreme Open Air Museum, underground cities, Mount Nemrut, Gobekli Tepe, the Haleplibahce Mosaic Museum, the Sanliurfa Archaeology Museum, and the Zeugma Mosaic Museum.
How active is this tour?
This is a sightseeing tour with moderate physical activity. You will walk around archaeological sites, some of which have uneven or sloping ground. The climb to the Mount Nemrut summit involves a short uphill walk. Cappadocia valley walks are gentle but on rocky terrain. Overall, a normal level of fitness is all that is required.
Is this tour suitable for older travellers?
Yes. The pace is well-managed and the group is small. The main physical consideration is the Mount Nemrut summit visit, which requires a short uphill walk. If you have any mobility concerns, let us know before booking and we can give you a more detailed picture of what to expect.
What should I wear when visiting mosques and religious sites?
In eastern Turkey and at mosques throughout the country, legs and arms should be covered regardless of gender. Loose-fitting, modest clothing is the right choice for this tour. A scarf to cover your head inside mosques is useful for women. Closed shoes are more practical than sandals for uneven site terrain.
Are there any health concerns specific to eastern Turkey?
Hepatitis A and Tetanus vaccinations are generally recommended for Turkey. There is a low malaria risk in some south-eastern regions, though not in the areas this tour visits. Yellow fever certificates are not required. Consult your GP or a travel clinic for personalised advice before departure.
Is eastern Turkey safe to visit?
Encounters Travel runs regular departures to eastern Turkey with small groups. We monitor the security situation continuously and follow UK Foreign Office guidance. Your local guide and the ground team handle logistics and will brief you on any local considerations. As with all travel, we recommend checking your government's current travel advice before departure.
Is travel insurance required?
Yes. Travel insurance is compulsory on all Encounters Travel tours and must cover personal accident and liability, medical expenses, emergency repatriation, and travel delay. We must have your policy details before you depart. You will not be permitted to join the tour without valid insurance.
What happens if my flight is delayed and I miss the airport transfer?
The 24-hour airport transfer service included in the tour covers standard arrival and departure. If your flight is delayed, contact us or our emergency number (provided in your booking confirmation) and we will do our best to assist. Additional costs arising from incorrect flight details or significantly delayed arrivals are at your own expense.
Do I need a visa for Turkey?
Most nationalities need to obtain a Turkish e-Visa online before travel. UK nationals are currently exempt for visits of up to 90 days per 180-day period, as are citizens of Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, and Poland. Visa rules can change, so always verify your specific requirements well in advance at the official Turkish e-Visa portal.
What accommodation is used on this tour?
Accommodation is at 4-star level throughout. In Istanbul you stay at the Yasmak Sultan Hotel, centrally located close to the old city. In Cappadocia you stay two nights in the Gamirasu Cave Hotel in Ayvali, built into the famous rock formations. In Adiyaman the White Star Hotel provides a comfortable base for the Mount Nemrut visit. In Sanliurfa you stay at the Kasr-i Hayat Boutique Hotel, a characterful property in the heart of the old city. On the final night you return to Istanbul.
What is a cave hotel like?
The Gamirasu Cave Hotel is carved into the soft volcanic rock formations that give Cappadocia its extraordinary landscape. Each suite has its own design and is fully equipped. Sleeping in a cave hotel is genuinely different from anywhere else - naturally cool in summer and with a remarkable atmosphere. It is one of the highlights of the tour for most travellers.
What time can I check into hotels?
Official hotel check-in in Turkey is typically between 14:00 and 15:00. However, the team always tries to get you into your room early where possible, and the hotel facilities are available to you from arrival. Your guide will manage any short waits if they occur.
What meals are provided on the tour?
Eight breakfasts and five dinners are included. Lunches are at your own expense. Eastern Turkey has a wonderful food culture, from Gaziantep, one of Turkey's great culinary cities, to the kebabs and traditional dishes of Sanliurfa. Your guide can point you to the best local options.
Can dietary requirements be accommodated?
Yes. Let us know your dietary needs when you book and we will pass them on to the hotels. Common requirements such as vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free can generally be catered for. In more remote or traditional areas the range may be more limited than in Istanbul, so being flexible helps.
Are there optional cooking experiences available?
Yes. A Cappadocia Cooking Class is available as a paid optional extra, running in a Turkish village house where you prepare a three-course meal using the traditional Tandir method, followed by eating what you have made. An Istanbul Cooking Class with a local chef in a hotel kitchen is also available. Both require a minimum of 2 people and should be booked in advance.
Is this a good tour for solo travellers?
Yes. The small group size (maximum 12) means you get to know everyone quickly. Solo travellers are matched with a same-gender room share where possible. If no match is found at booking, a single supplement is added to your balance, which is refunded if a match is arranged before departure.
What type of traveller does this tour attract?
Eastern Turkey Encounters draws travellers with a genuine interest in ancient history and archaeology. Expect people who want to go beyond the standard Istanbul-Pamukkale circuit and engage with sites that genuinely changed what we know about human civilisation. The group tends to be curious, engaged, and good company.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. This tour can be run as a private departure on dates that suit you. Private bookings allow you to customise accommodation choices and the pace of the itinerary. Contact us for a quote.
What airport do I fly into?
The tour starts and ends in Istanbul. Both Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) are covered by the included airport transfer service. An Encounters Travel representative will meet you with a sign displaying your name.
What power sockets does Turkey use?
Turkey uses Type C and Type F sockets at 220V. Bring a universal travel adaptor if your home country uses a different plug type.
What is the weather like in eastern Turkey?
Eastern Turkey warms significantly from late May and stays hot through late September, with temperatures in the mid-30s in summer. Nights can be cooler, especially at altitude. After October, temperatures drop and winter arrives. For the Cappadocia section, nights can be cool even in summer. Pack light layers alongside your warm-weather clothing.
What currency do I need in Turkey?
The local currency is the Turkish lira. Cards are widely accepted in Istanbul, Cappadocia, and at hotels throughout the tour. Having some cash is useful for small purchases at markets, tips, and local restaurants where cards may not be accepted.
Can I add extra nights in Istanbul?
Yes. Extra nights in Istanbul are available before or after the tour at the same hotel. Istanbul rewards time and there is easily more than a single day's worth of sightseeing in the old city alone. Airport transfers are still included on your extra night days.
What other optional activities are available on tour?
In Istanbul an optional afternoon Bosphorus cruise is available on day two. In Cappadocia there is an optional Turkish folklore evening with folk dances and traditional music. Both are highly recommended and should be requested in advance or discussed with your guide on arrival.
Are there other Turkey tours I can combine with this one?
Yes. The Crossroads of Turkey tour is specifically designed to combine eastern and western Turkey. Encounters Travel also offers the Taste of Turkey (8 days, Istanbul to Istanbul covering the west), Anatolian Adventure (10 days), and Discover Turkey (8 days) as complementary options.
When do regular departures run?
Small group departures operate regularly from late spring through to November, running approximately fortnightly. The tour is guaranteed to depart with a minimum of 2 travellers, and is also available on a private basis at any time of year.
How do I secure my place on this tour?
A deposit is required at booking to confirm your place. The full balance is due eight weeks before departure. Payment options include debit or credit card, bank transfer, or cheque. Card payments are subject to a processing fee.
Is my money financially protected?
Yes. Encounters Travel is a UK registered company and works with Trust My Travel, which provides financial protection via an insurance policy. In the event of insolvency you would be refunded for unfulfilled services and, where applicable, repatriated to the UK.

We wanted something tailored to our interests and availability, and Gavin at Encounters created a bespoke version of an existing tour for us. As we worked out what this tour might involve, it necessitated quite a few questions and answers going back and forth, as we refined our plans. Each time Gavin was very prompt to respond, did so in full, and very courteously. Encounters Travel liaised with all of the local agents and catered for everything we had asked for. We ended up having an absolutely fantastic (and wholly unforgettable) holiday, seeing sights that we would never have been able to fit in if we were trying to do it completely by ourselves. On the evidence of this trip, we would very strongly recommend them to others looking for an agent who'll help to take some of the hard work out of planning a holiday.

I bought a ticket thru living social at 3am when I couldn’t sleep and then said to myself “What did I just do?!” turns out what I did was make one of the BEST DECISIONS OF MY LIFE!!! The travel agency was easy to work with and always available via telephone (UK HOURS) I traveled alone for an additional few of 200 or something but they found me a roommate and I elected to take the roomie and get a refund on solo fee (another great decision..roomie was from Vegas and a great guy) I traveled from LA to Turkey and then to Cairo the planes were nice and roomie. They fed ya so much I was stuffed by the time I got to Turkey (tip: TURKEY AIRPORT SUCKS! It’s HUGE,all the gates are far apart and you are only guided by arrows and no one helps you,so move Swift if you have to meet a connecting flight) upon arrival to Cairo I was met by a sharply dressed man with a sign that greeted me in the traditional Muslim greeting and we were immediately friends! He walked me to get my visa ($20 American dollars cash) through customs and it was a breeze...with a guide it’s SPEEDY. We were met by a air condition car (IT WAS HOT) they took me to a hotel across the street from the pyramids and he checked me in. (Tip: Security is HIGH everywhere and you will be searched by security at all times entering and leaving.. you will never feel unsafe. Plan on seeing guards with machine guns in the street and hotels..you will grow accustomed to it) I was there for 10 days and EACH DAY GOT BETTER!! The food, hotels, monuments, experience and PRICE CANNOT BE BEAT!! I crawled inside of the Great Pyramid of Cheops, seen the Sphinx, slept overnight on a felucca on the Nile, took a sleeper train to Aswan, went to a Nubian Village for a traditional dinner, snorkeled in the Red Sea, toured the Cairo Museum,Sunrise Hot Air Ballon ride over the Valley of the Kings, stayed at a luxury all inclusive Sea Side resort in Hurghada, drove thru the Sahara Desert to monuments and witnessed the sunrise, toured downtown Cairo market, visited the Synagogue that Moses worshipped and the well he drank from, and so many things in between and I did it all for UNDER $1550 US dollars. No guess work, this company TAKES CARE OF EVERYTHING!! Our tour guide “Big Mo” was one of the most passionate and insightful people I have ever met. His expertise of Egyptian history and the culture of his people is undeniable. He even went water sliding with me in Hurghada!! I cannot express how fortunate U feel to have had this experience in my lifetime. I was humbled by the people and inspired to see people with my likeness etched in massive stone and in the walls of the monuments and tombs. I met some of the most beautiful people inside and out in this country. They LOVE AMERICANS and they desperately need your tourism. I cannot say enough about this package that Encounters Travel has put together. All vehicles, hotels, restaurants and amenities they took us to were clean and safe. They include some meals the guides can be trusted. Be sure to give them the best tip you can at the end of the tour in AMERICAN MONEY....they will have earned it!! Now the bad....but you can’t escape these; IT’S HOT...no matter when you go (it’s Africa for goodness sake!) you will sweat all the time..so bring something to wipe your face like a few dark hand towels for daily use, hand sanitizer AND A HAND FAN...trust me some air is better then NONE and you can shield your face when the guides talk to you out in the sun but I recommend a fold away umbrella too TRUST ME!!! Only other thing is the street merchants..the first two days you are sympathetic to the plight after that you just instantly become a rude American and ignore them lol. They will try to pressure you, place things in your arm (I opened my arm and let them drop), give you a “free gift” (be warned NOTHING in Egypt is free) and try to pull you away from the group, always consult your guide they will help you steer clear and will help you to not get cheated. Last but MOST IMPORTANTLY when in the monuments, temples and other places NEVER LET A FRIENDLY PERSON HAVE YOU CAMERA TO TAKE PICS OF YOU...they will demand money and try to intimidate you and tell you they work for the Govt and wait for you at the gates if you don’t give them what you want. Just be polite and keep saying “no thank you while walking away” when you get close to your guide they will get the hint and leave you alone. Other than that..go have the TIME OF YOUR LIFE IN EGYPT!!! You will NEVER REGRET IT!

What a GREAT experience! I was a solo traveler and a bit worried but everyone at the office staff answered all my questions promptly assuring me I'd be in an English speaking group. I even missed my initial flight Nd Travel Encounters was able to coordinate my new transfer pick up time in Istanbul. The tour itself was also simply amazing, especially if you like History! Great sites with plenty to do, great itinerary including Troy, Galipoli, Blue Mosque, Haggai Sophia, Ephesus, Artemis, Kayakoy, etc. had a great/same guide and driver for the duration of he trip and all 4 star hotels. Nicely arranged trip, at a nice price. :)

I can really recommend to book a trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL. Stumbled across them by accident when i was searching the net for best prices. Being from South Africa with the weak ZAR they came out tops. Booked the 10 day Anatolian Adventure. All entrance fees was included. Thanks to Mariska for always getting back to me immediately. The tour surpassed my expectations and the accommodation provided was mostly 5 star. The tour guide Ilker (from Fez Travel) was amazing. He was very informative and not forgetting our good driver Irfaan. We had a small group of 10. Overall, a great trip. Worth every penny. Will definitely book my next trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.
