Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Indus Domes and Deserts Islamabad tour?
Indus Domes and Deserts (Islamabad) is a 17-day small-group journey across Pakistan from Karachi to Islamabad, covering the country's full historical and geographical sweep. You'll visit Mohenjo-daro (one of the world's oldest cities), the ancient stepwells and palaces of the Sindh desert, the Mughal monuments and bustling bazaars of Lahore, the Shalimar Gardens, the Lahore Fort, and finish in Islamabad. Maximum 16 people, 3-4 star hotels throughout, and virtually all meals included (16 breakfasts, 15 lunches, 15 dinners). An extraordinary country almost no one has been to yet.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Pakistan?
Yes. This tour was designed for travellers who want to discover Pakistan properly, not just tick off one famous city. Your professional local guide and expert team handle everything from logistics to cultural context. First-time visitors consistently describe it as one of the most rewarding journeys of their lives precisely because Pakistan is so far off the standard tourist trail. Come with an open mind and leave your preconceptions at home.
What's the difference between this and the Indus Domes and Deserts tour?
The Indus Domes and Deserts Tour (Lahore end) covers the first 15 days of this itinerary, ending in Lahore on Day 15. The Islamabad version adds 2 extra days to continue from Lahore to Islamabad, Pakistan's planned capital city with its wide boulevards, Faisal Mosque, and proximity to Taxila's Gandharan Buddhist ruins. If you have the time, the Islamabad extension is well worth it.
What's the best time of year to do this tour?
October to March is the main travel window for Pakistan's plains and cities. Winters (November to February) offer the most comfortable temperatures for the Sindh desert, Lahore, and Islamabad. Summer (May to August) is extremely hot in the south and central plains, though the north of Pakistan is pleasantly cool in summer. Avoid the monsoon (July to August) for southern and central itineraries.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
Pakistan requires a serious logistical operation. We use AC cars and landcruisers throughout (not public buses), stay in the best available 3-4 star hotels and guesthouses, and include an extraordinary 45 out of 48 meals (16 breakfasts, 15 lunches, 15 dinners). Your guides are experienced professionals who have been vetted carefully in a country where the quality of guidance genuinely matters. This is comprehensive, well-resourced travel in a destination that rewards it.
What's actually included in the price?
Included: 16 nights in 3-4 star hotels and guesthouses; 16 breakfasts, 15 lunches, 15 dinners; all transport in AC vehicles and landcruisers; professional English-speaking guides; all sightseeing as per the itinerary; 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfers.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, Pakistan visa fees, travel insurance, entrance fees, drinks, personal expenses, and tips. Your guide will brief you on current entrance fees and tipping norms.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve with a deposit, hold a reservation, or pay in full. Balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Easy to moderate. This is a cultural sightseeing tour with significant driving on some days (the Sindh routes involve long road sections). Site visits involve walking on archaeological ruins, some with uneven ground. No trekking or strenuous activities. The long drive days are the main physical challenge: bring a good book and treat them as part of the experience.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
The tour is well-suited for older travellers who are fit and interested in history and culture. The 3-4 star accommodation and included meals remove much of the logistical stress of travel in Pakistan. The AC vehicles provide relief from the heat.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
Archaeological sites like Mohenjo-daro involve walking over uneven ground. Some city bazaars involve cobblestones. If you have specific mobility concerns, contact us before booking so we can advise on the most relevant sections.
Is Pakistan safe to visit right now?
Pakistan has long been misunderstood by Western media. The tourist circuits covered on this tour, Karachi, the Sindh desert, Lahore, and Islamabad, are substantially different from the conflict zones in certain border areas. Pakistan has a growing adventure tourism infrastructure, warm and generous hospitality, and a fascinating history. That said, travel advice can change. Always check the latest UK Foreign Office or your government's official travel advice before booking and before departure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Pakistan requires more awareness and cultural sensitivity than many destinations. Modest dress (headscarf not mandatory but appreciated, covered arms and legs) is important and respectful throughout. The small-group format means you're never travelling alone, and your guide manages interactions in the field. Solo female travellers do join this tour and have excellent experiences with preparation and an open attitude to local customs.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide can direct you to medical facilities. Major cities including Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad have private hospitals. In rural areas, medical facilities may be limited, making comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation cover essential.
Will we need police or government escorts?
In some parts of Pakistan, particularly in Sindh, police or government escort may be arranged as a routine precautionary measure. Your guide will advise you in advance and handle all arrangements. Escorts are part of the formal tourism system and are not unusual.
What's the accommodation actually like?
3-4 star hotels and guesthouses throughout, which in Pakistan ranges from comfortable international-standard hotels in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad to characterful local guesthouses in the Sindh region. All are vetted by our local team. Air conditioning is standard given the climate.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Hotels in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad have Wi-Fi. More remote guesthouses in the Sindh desert region may have limited connectivity. Download offline maps and entertainment for those sections.
Can I upgrade?
If you want a higher standard of accommodation in the major cities, contact us before booking to discuss what's available. Islamabad has some excellent international hotels.
What kind of food will we eat?
Pakistani cuisine is one of the great undiscovered culinary traditions. The karahi (wok-cooked meat dishes), biryani, seekh kebabs, nihari (slow-cooked beef stew), and fresh breads (naan, roti, paratha) are exceptional. Lahore's food street is one of the best street food experiences in Asia. With 45 meals included, you'll eat very well throughout the tour.
Can you cater for vegetarian or vegan diets?

Yes, we are delighted to cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements wherever possible! Simply let us know your dietary preferences or allergies at the time of booking so our team can notify our tour leaders, hotels, and restaurants in advance. While meal options in more remote areas may be simpler, we always do our utmost to ensure you enjoy plentiful, delicious, and authentic local food throughout your adventure with us.

Is it safe to drink the water?
Do not drink tap water in Pakistan. Bottled water is widely available. Your guide will advise on safe eating and drinking at the start of the tour.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Pakistan is a particularly rewarding destination for the solo traveller who wants to go somewhere genuinely different. Maximum 16 people keeps the group close and conversations easy. Solo travellers on this tour consistently cite it as one of their most memorable trips.
Do I have to share a room?
The tour is priced on twin-share. A single supplement is available.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Maximum 16 people. The travellers who choose Pakistan tend to be experienced, curious, and enthusiastic about going somewhere genuinely off the tourist trail. The demographic mix is wide.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures can be arranged. Contact us to discuss dates and customisation.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The long drive days, heat, and cultural sensitivity requirements of Pakistan make this better suited to adults and older teenagers. Contact us to discuss suitability for specific ages.
Do I need a visa for Pakistan?
Most nationalities require a visa for Pakistan. Many nationalities can now obtain an e-Visa online before travel. Check current requirements and fees on the Pakistan Online Visa System website for your specific nationality well before departure.
What should I pack?
Modest, loose-fitting clothing is essential throughout: covered arms and legs for both men and women. Women should carry a scarf or dupatta (available locally) for mosque visits. Comfortable walking shoes. Pakistan uses Type C/D sockets at 220V. Sunscreen and a sun hat are essential in the Sindh summer heat. A small daypack for excursions.
Are any vaccinations required?
No vaccinations are officially required for Pakistan for most nationalities. Commonly recommended vaccines include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, and Diphtheria. Consider Hepatitis B and Rabies. Malaria prophylactics may be advised for some areas. Consult your doctor or travel health clinic well before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. Fly to Karachi (KHI) and depart from Islamabad (ISB). Airport arrival and departure transfers are included.
What about tipping?
Tipping is appreciated in Pakistan. Your guide will brief you on customary amounts for guides, drivers, and hotel staff at the start of the tour.
Can I extend into the Hunza Valley?
The northern areas of Pakistan including the Hunza Valley and the Karakoram Highway are among the most spectacular landscapes on Earth. These can be added as a post-tour extension. Contact us to discuss combining the plains tour with a northern Pakistan extension.
Can I do the shorter Lahore-end version?
Yes. The Indus Domes and Deserts Tour (ending in Lahore on Day 15) is available if 17 days is too long. Contact us to discuss both options.
Can I add extra time in Lahore?
Yes. Lahore rewards extra time beyond what the main itinerary includes. Additional nights in Lahore can be arranged. Contact us to discuss.
How far ahead should I book?
October to March is peak season and spaces fill. Book 3-6 months in advance for the best travel season dates.
How does booking work?
Complete the online reservation form on the tour page. Pay a deposit, hold a reservation, or pay in full. Balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Travel insurance is compulsory and must cover medical evacuation and emergency repatriation. Given Pakistan's limited medical infrastructure outside major cities, comprehensive cover is essential.
What's your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale applies. Full terms are in our booking conditions. We are UK-registered and protected by Trust My Travel's financial security insurance.
What if my dates are already sold out?
Contact us to check waitlist availability or alternative dates. The Indus Domes and Deserts Tour (ending in Lahore) is the main related alternative.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.
