Why book the Classic Greece & Santorini tour?
Classic Greece and Santorini is our 10-day shoestring-style introduction to Greece, Athens to Athens, on a small group of up to 50 travellers. In 10 days you'll walk through the Acropolis, explore the Bronze Age citadel at Mycenae, see the ancient stadium at Olympia, visit the sacred oracle at Delphi, be awed by the monasteries of Meteora perched on clifftop pillars, and arrive in Santorini by Blue Star ferry to see the caldera, Fira, Oia, and the island's wineries. A tipping kitty is included. This is Greece's greatest classical circuit, accessible and well-paced.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Greece?
Absolutely. Classic Greece and Santorini is designed as a comprehensive first encounter with the country. It covers the ancient mainland (Athens, Mycenae, Olympia, Delphi, Meteora) and ends with the most iconic island in the Aegean (Santorini). It's the best possible Greek primer.
What's the difference between this and your other Greece tours?
Classic Greece and Santorini (10 days) is our flagship Greece circuit, covering mainland classical sites plus Santorini by ferry. It runs as a shoestring tour with 4-star hotels and boutique guesthouses, making it accessible to a wide range of budgets. For a shorter or more focused Greece experience, contact us about alternative options.
What's the best time of year for this tour?
The tour runs all year round. Spring (April and May) is arguably the best time: pleasant temperatures, wildflowers on the mainland, and smaller crowds in Santorini. Late September and October are also excellent. Summer (July and August) is peak season: Santorini is very busy and very hot, but the caldera at golden hour is breathtaking. Winter is quieter and cooler, but the mainland sites are even less crowded.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Greece tours floating around. Classic Greece and Santorini includes 4-star hotels and boutique guesthouses throughout (including the Athenaeum Grand in Athens, Amalia Delphi, Grand Meteora Kalambaka, and Rose Bay Santorini), a tipping kitty so you don't calculate gratuities yourself, 9 breakfasts and 3 dinners, a Blue Star ferry to Santorini, and a local guide. That's a well-curated 10-day circuit, not a budget bus tour.
What's actually included in the price?
Included: all accommodation (9 nights in 4-star hotels and boutique guesthouses), all transport and transfers, the Blue Star ferry to Santorini, services of a local guide, a tipping kitty, 9 breakfasts, and 3 dinners. Entrance fees to archaeological sites are NOT included and are paid locally.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, entrance fees to sites visited (paid locally at each site), travel insurance, lunches, meals not listed in the itinerary, drinks, personal expenses, and the hotel residence tax (paid locally at check-in). Your guide will brief current tipping information at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit to secure your place and the balance is due 8 weeks before departure. Reservations can also be held without immediate payment.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Moderate. The Acropolis in Athens involves a significant uphill walk on marble steps in warm weather. Mycenae, Delphi, and Olympia involve walking over uneven ancient ground. The Meteora monasteries involve steep paths and steps between the clifftop buildings. Santorini's caldera rim path and village streets involve inclines. Nothing requires special fitness, but good walking shoes and a reasonable level of fitness are important.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
Classic Greece and Santorini is popular with a wide age range. The pace is measured. The Meteora monasteries and the Acropolis are the steepest sections; both are manageable for most fit adults. Many travellers in their 60s and 70s join this tour. The mix of cultural and scenic experiences means there's rarely a day that's purely physical.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The Acropolis, Mycenae, and Meteora all involve steps and uneven ground that can be very challenging for limited mobility. Lifts or ramp alternatives exist at the Acropolis, but the overall experience requires good mobility. If you have specific concerns, contact us before booking and we can give honest advice on which elements are accessible.
How hot does Greece get in summer?
Summer temperatures on the mainland can reach 35-40 degrees Celsius in July and August. Santorini is slightly cooler with sea breezes but still very hot at peak. Sightseeing at the ancient sites in this heat requires hydration, sun protection, and a comfortable pace. The cooler months of spring and autumn are noticeably more pleasant for walking.
Is Greece safe to visit right now?
Greece is a stable European Union country and one of the world's most visited tourist destinations. The sites on this tour are well-established and very safe. Check your government's current travel advice before booking.
Is Greece safe for women travelling solo?
Greece is one of the more accessible European destinations for solo female travellers. The main tourist areas on this tour are well-trodden and safe. The group format means you're always in company.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Greece has a good healthcare system and private clinics in the main cities and tourist areas. Your guide will help you access care. Travel insurance covering medical expenses is compulsory on all our tours.
What happens if weather affects the Santorini ferry crossing?
The Blue Star ferry operates regular scheduled services between the mainland and Santorini. In the rare event of severe weather causing a delay or cancellation, your guide will advise on the alternative arrangements. This is unusual but possible in winter.
What's the accommodation actually like?
4-star hotels and boutique guesthouses throughout. In Athens you'll be at the Athenaeum Grand, a central and well-appointed hotel. Hotel Europa in Olympia, Amalia Delphi in Delphi, and Grand Meteora in Kalambaka are all solid properties in their locations. On Santorini you'll stay at the Rose Bay, with caldera or garden views. All properties are en-suite with air conditioning and Wi-Fi.
What's the Rose Bay Santorini like?
The Rose Bay is a comfortable hotel in Santorini with classic Cycladic architecture: whitewashed walls, blue details, and a pool. It's an excellent base for exploring the island. Some rooms have caldera views. It's a mid-range property that represents good value for Santorini.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
All hotels on this tour have Wi-Fi. Connectivity is reliable throughout Greece, including on Santorini.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
On a private version of the tour, you can upgrade to caldera-view hotels in Santorini or higher-category properties in Athens. Contact us to discuss options.
What kind of food will we eat?
Greek cuisine is outstanding. Expect mezze spreads (tzatziki, hummus, taramosalata, dolmades), grilled octopus, fresh fish, souvlaki, moussaka, and regional dishes across the mainland. On Santorini you'll find excellent seafood and wines made from the island's indigenous Assyrtiko grape. The 3 included dinners are at restaurants chosen by your guide.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water in Greece?
Tap water in most of mainland Greece and the major islands is safe to drink. In some Aegean islands, including Santorini, water is desalinated and generally fine but locals often prefer bottled water. Using a refillable bottle helps reduce plastic waste. We recommend a Water-to-Go filter bottle as a sensible travel companion.
Is Classic Greece and Santorini good for solo travellers?
Yes. The social atmosphere of a group tour (up to 50 travellers) makes it easy to meet people. Solo travellers make up a significant proportion of most departures.
Do I have to share a room?
The tour price is based on two people sharing. A single supplement is available for solo travellers wanting a private room throughout the tour.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
This is a shoestring-style tour running with a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 50 travellers. Larger group sizes are part of the shoestring format and reflected in the accessible pricing. Groups typically include a mix of solo travellers, couples, and friends across a range of ages.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Contact us to discuss a private departure of the Classic Greece and Santorini itinerary on your preferred dates.
Is the tour suitable for kids?
The source doesn't specify a minimum age. The classical sites and ferry crossing are suitable for older children with genuine interest in history. Santorini's clifftop villages and narrow streets require supervision for young children. Contact us to discuss suitability for your family.
Do I need a visa for Greece?
Greece is an EU Schengen Area country. EU and EEA citizens do not need a visa. UK, US, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand passport holders do not need a visa for short visits. Most nationalities can stay for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. Check current requirements for your nationality before travel.
What should I pack?
Lightweight clothing and comfortable walking shoes are essential. Modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) for visiting monasteries at Meteora is required; women may also need a wrap for certain religious sites. Sun hat and sunscreen for summer. A light jacket for cooler evenings on Santorini. Greece uses Type C and F sockets at 230V.
Are any vaccinations required for Greece?
No vaccinations are required for entry to Greece. Standard routine vaccines should be up to date. Greece has good healthcare and no tropical disease risks.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. International flights are not included. The tour starts and ends in Athens (ATH). You can arrange your own flights or ask us for suggestions.
What about tipping?
A tipping kitty is included in the tour price, covering gratuities for your guide and driver throughout the trip. The hotel residence tax (paid locally at check-in) is separate from the tipping kitty and not included in the tour price.
Can I extend my time in Athens?
Extra nights in Athens at the start or end of the tour can be arranged. The city rewards additional time, particularly for museum visits (the Acropolis Museum is world-class) and eating your way through the Monastiraki neighbourhood.
Can I extend my time in Santorini?
A post-tour extension on Santorini is a popular addition. Contact us about arranging extra nights at the Rose Bay or an upgraded caldera-view property.
Can I add a visit to another Greek island?
Contact us about adding Mykonos, Crete, or other Cycladic islands to your Greece trip. We can design a tailor-made extension.
How far ahead should I book?
Summer departures (June to August) and spring departures (April to May) tend to fill several months in advance given the popularity of Santorini. We'd recommend booking 3 to 6 months ahead for peak season and at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead for other dates.
How does booking work?
Book online via the Dates and Prices tab. Pay a deposit or hold a reservation. Balance due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, compulsory. Must cover medical expenses and emergency repatriation. World Nomads is a good option. We require your insurance details before the tour starts.
What's your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale applies based on how close to departure you cancel. Full terms in our booking conditions. We partner with Trust My Travel for financial protection.
