Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Egyptian City Break tour?
Egyptian City Break is a 5-day small-group tour from Cairo to Cairo that gets you to Egypt's most iconic sites without overcommitting your holiday allowance. In 4 full days you'll see the Great Pyramids, Sphinx and Saqqara Step Pyramid, explore the Grand Egyptian Museum with its Tutankhamun collection, tour the Citadel and Khan al-Khalili bazaar, enjoy a Nile dinner cruise with Sufi dancing and belly dancing, and spend a day in Alexandria seeing the Roman amphitheatre, Pompey's Pillar and the Catacombs of Kom al-Shoqafa. Groups run every Friday year-round, capped at 18, and you stay in a 5-star hotel throughout.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Egypt?
It's ideal for first-timers with limited time. The itinerary is tightly structured to cover Cairo's unmissable sights and adds Alexandria as a day trip, giving you a taste of both ancient and Greco-Roman Egypt. The Egyptologist guide handles all the logistics and context.
What's the difference between this and the Cairo City Break?
Egyptian City Break is 5 days and includes a full day in Alexandria (Roman amphitheatre, Citadel, Pompey's Pillar, Catacombs of Kom al-Shoqafa) as well as a Nile dinner cruise. Cairo City Break is 4 days and stays entirely in Cairo, making it the quicker option if Alexandria doesn't feature in your plans. Both stay in 5-star hotels.
What's the best time of year to visit Cairo?
October to April is the most comfortable period: temperatures are manageable and the skies are clear over the Pyramids. Summer (June to September) can be intensely hot, though the tour runs year-round. Group departures leave every Friday throughout the year.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Egypt city-break packages. What distinguishes this tour is the 5-star hotel (Giza Palace Hotel, next to the Pyramids), an Egyptologist guide for all sightseeing, entrance fees included for all sites in the itinerary, a private AC minibus throughout, 4 breakfasts, 1 Alexandria lunch and 1 Nile dinner cruise included, and a well-structured itinerary that uses every day efficiently. Attempting this independently would cost roughly the same, but without the expert guidance.
What's actually included in the price?
Included are 4 nights in a 5-star Cairo hotel, an Egyptologist guide for all sightseeing, private AC transport, site entrance fees for all included tours, 4 breakfasts, 1 lunch in Alexandria, and the Nile dinner cruise including the Sufi dancing and belly dancing performance.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included are international flights, Egyptian tourist visa, travel insurance, the tipping kitty (allow the local equivalent of a modest amount), meals not listed in the itinerary, drinks and personal spending, and guide tips. Your guide will advise on current tipping amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Secure your place with a deposit or use the reserve-now-pay-later option. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
This is a sightseeing city-break, not a physical challenge. The main demands are walking on uneven ground at archaeological sites and the heat, which can be intense in summer. The pace is manageable for most travellers. Most sites involve standing and walking for a few hours at a time.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
Cairo's ancient sites are very accessible and visited comfortably by travellers of all ages. The main thing to watch is the heat in summer, and the occasional uneven ground at Saqqara. The Pyramids and GEM are very manageable. The pace of this tour is relaxed enough for older travellers.
What if I have mobility issues?
The Pyramids, Sphinx and Saqqara involve some walking on sandy and uneven ground, and the interiors of some tombs require ducking. Alexandria's sites are generally more accessible. The GEM is a modern museum with good accessibility. If you have specific mobility concerns, contact us to discuss.
Will I be hassled by vendors and touts?
At the Pyramids and in the Khan al-Khalili bazaar, vendors and touts are part of the experience. It's commercial rather than threatening. A firm 'la shukran' (no thank you) and walking on usually does the job. Your guide will help you navigate these situations confidently.
Is Egypt safe to visit right now?
Egypt is a popular tourist destination with millions of visitors annually. The sites covered on this tour, Cairo and Alexandria, are among the most visited in the world. The main risks are the usual urban ones: petty theft and scams near tourist sites. Your guide is with you throughout, which significantly reduces exposure to these. Check the latest government travel advice for your home country before departure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Many solo women do this tour and find it straightforward. The key practical points: dress modestly (loose-fitting clothes covering shoulders and knees at sites), be confident and direct, and stay aware in the bazaar and around the Pyramids. Being part of a guided group with an Egyptologist guide is a significant reassurance.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Egypt has medical facilities in Cairo and Alexandria. Your guide will assist you in accessing care. Travel insurance with medical cover is compulsory. No malaria prophylactics are needed for Egypt.
What's the accommodation actually like?
You stay in the Giza Palace Hotel, a 5-star property with a 1,900-square-metre spa, multiple restaurants, and rooftop facilities. It is located in West Cairo near the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, making it a practical and luxurious base for the tour's sightseeing days.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Yes. The Giza Palace Hotel has Wi-Fi throughout. The tour vehicle does not.
Can I upgrade my room or book a suite?
Room upgrades and suite options can be requested at the time of booking. Contact us to discuss what's available.
What kind of food will we eat?
The included Nile dinner cruise features Egyptian mezze and grills served aboard a boat on the river while watching Sufi dancing and belly dancing performances. The Alexandria day includes a lunch. Cairo itself is a world-class food city: from Koshary (Egypt's beloved street-food staple) to grilled fish on the Mediterranean coast in Alexandria.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water throughout Egypt. Don't drink tap water. We recommend a Water-to-Go filter bottle for reducing plastic waste. Use code ENCOUNTERS25 for 25% off.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Very good. Groups of up to 18 mean there are always interesting people to share the experience with. The Friday departure schedule means you can plan around your flights easily. Many solo travellers choose this tour as a way to do Egypt's highlights safely and efficiently.
Do I have to share a room?
If you're travelling solo, the single supplement books you a private room. If you're happy to share, ask us and we'll try to match you with another solo traveller of the same gender.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Minimum 2, maximum 18. The Egyptian City Break runs every Friday year-round and attracts a varied international mix of travellers looking for an efficient, well-guided introduction to Cairo.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures are available on any date, not just Fridays. Contact us for a quotation.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The tour works well for older children and teenagers with an interest in ancient history. For a tour specifically designed for families with younger children, the Egyptian Family Adventure (12 days) includes child-specific activities. There is no minimum age stated for this tour.
Do I need a visa for Egypt?
An Egyptian tourist visa is required. We recommend applying in advance using the official online e-visa system at visa2egypt.gov.eg. Canadian passport holders must obtain a visa from the Egyptian Consulate in advance. Most other nationalities can use the official e-visa portal. Check current requirements for your nationality before travel.
What should I pack?
Light, loose-fitting cotton clothing; modest dress (covering shoulders and knees) is required at the Citadel and mosques. Comfortable walking shoes for the Pyramids and Saqqara. High-factor sunscreen and a sun hat are essential. Egypt uses two-round-prong sockets at 220V; bring a universal adaptor.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations for Egypt include Tetanus, Typhoid and Hepatitis A. No malaria prophylactics are needed for Egypt. Consult your GP or travel clinic for current advice.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. You fly into Cairo International Airport (CAI) or Sphinx International Airport (SPX). Airport transfers are included at the start and end of the tour.
What about tipping?
A tipping kitty covers drivers and local helpers; allow the local equivalent of a modest amountas a guide. Your Egyptologist guide is tipped separately at the end of the tour based on your satisfaction.
Can I visit Wadi Rayan (Valley of the Whales)?
Yes. The Wadi Rayan day trip is available as a paid add-on from Cairo. You visit Wadi Rayan protected area (with waterfalls and a bird hide), try sandboarding in the dunes, and walk among fossilised whale specimens at Wadi Hitan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It requires an extra free day in Cairo.
Can I add extra days in Cairo?
Yes. Extra nights in Cairo are available as paid add-ons at 5-star (pre-tour) or 4-star (post-tour) level, staying in hotels used by the main tour.
Can I add the Grand Egyptian Museum as a private tour?
Yes. A private GEM visit is available as a paid add-on for those who want to spend more time in the museum than the main itinerary allows. This is separate from the group visit included in the tour.
How far ahead should I book?
Group departures leave every Friday year-round, so availability is good. High-demand periods around Christmas, Easter and Egyptian public holidays fill sooner. Book at least 4-6 weeks ahead for flexible periods, longer for holidays.
How does booking work?
Reserve online through the Dates & Prices tab. Pay a deposit or use the reserve-now-pay-later option. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure. Private departures are available on other dates.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Travel insurance is compulsory on all Encounters Travel tours and must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation. World Nomads Travel Insurance covers over 150 adventure activities.
What's your cancellation policy?
Cancellation charges apply on a sliding scale depending on how far in advance you cancel. Full details are in the booking conditions. All bookings are financially protected through Trust My Travel, a UK-registered financial protection scheme.
What if my preferred date is sold out?
The tour runs every Friday, so the next available departure is usually only a week away. You can also book a private departure on any date. For a shorter tour, Cairo City Break (4 days) is another option. Contact the team to discuss.

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

From the time we landed in Cairo we were treated as VIP’s. Nadine our Tour leader kept on checking on us throughout the journey. We were fortunate to have Fayed and Hossam as the tour guides, they took their time to explain the sites throughout each excursion. Everyone made us feel safe and well looked after.

Wonderful time with friends. The land of Egypt is hard to describe in a few words. The history is so immense I will need to come back again and again. The accommodations were above par and the people from Encounters Travel are very helpful. I would your with them again.

Encounters travel worked with me to devise a specific itinerary to meet my interests, and its agents and guides in Egypt delivered beautifully while I was in Egypt. I was with a group for most of the trip, but per my request, they set up individual excursions for me on two additional days. Their agents in Cairo and Egypt were particularly good. I had to go to a medical clinic in Luxor unexpectedly, and the Encounters liaison handled it so quickly and easily that it didn't effect my itinerary at all.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Transport

Our trips feature a mix of different transport options. We want you to feel like you’re really experiencing the country you’re travelling through, but at the same time we want you to finish journeys refreshed enough to enjoy the next stage of the tour. In Egypt we do not use any public tourist buses or overnight coach journeys as we know that people don't sleep on board and end up very tired for the following few days. All the vehicles we use are air-conditioned, many are fitted with speed limiters, and all are inspected and checked daily.
