Why book the Marine Conservation Cruise tour?
Marine Conservation Cruise is our 8-day small-group expedition aboard the MV Felicity, a Turkish gulet operating in the Maldives. It is the only Maldives tour that genuinely combines hands-on whale shark research with snorkelling over some of the richest coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. You travel with a resident MWSR (Maldives Whale Shark Research) scientist, contribute to real conservation data, and cruise between Male and Male with a maximum of 12 passengers. This is not a standard beach holiday: it is for people who want their Maldives trip to matter.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to the Maldives?
Yes. The Maldives does not require previous conservation experience or advanced diving certification. The research activities are based on snorkelling, not scuba, so anyone comfortable in open water can participate. The MV Felicity carries a maximum of 12 passengers, so the experience is intimate and well-managed. If you have never visited the Maldives before, this is a genuinely distinctive way to do it.
What makes this different from a standard Maldives liveaboard?
Most Maldives liveaboards are focused on recreational diving or relaxation. The Marine Conservation Cruise has a resident MWSR scientist on board who leads whale shark identification and data collection activities. Every snorkelling session contributes to the ongoing research programme. The MV Felicity accommodates only 12 people in 4 double and 3 twin air-conditioned cabins, giving it a far more personal character than larger dive vessels.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
The whale shark season in the South Ari Atoll region runs from June to November, when aggregations are most reliable. However, whale sharks are present in Maldivian waters year-round. Departures are limited and sell out well in advance, so check the Dates and Prices page early for current availability.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Maldives packages. But this cruise includes all meals on board (three meals per day for all 8 days), all snorkelling equipment, the resident MWSR scientist, guided research sessions, the charter of the MV Felicity with its dedicated crew, and travel between the atolls. The Maldives is an inherently premium destination and liveaboard costs reflect the logistics of operating in a remote island archipelago.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 7 nights accommodation in a double or twin cabin aboard the MV Felicity; all meals on board (full board throughout); all snorkelling equipment; guided whale shark research sessions with a resident MWSR scientist; all internal transfers between Male and the vessel; and services of the captain and crew.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights to Male (MLE), travel insurance, Maldives visa (free 30-day tourist visa on arrival for all nationalities), drinks beyond water and basic beverages, personal expenses, tips for the crew and scientist, and any optional diving with certified dive operators. Budget a modest daily amount for drinks from the onboard bar and crew gratuities.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve with a deposit or use our reserve-now-pay-later option. Full balance is due eight weeks before departure. Because departures are limited and sell out early, we strongly recommend securing your place as soon as possible.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Easy to moderate. The main activity is snorkelling from the boat, which requires you to be a confident swimmer in open water. You do not need to be a certified diver. Getting in and out of the water from the boat requires some agility. If you are comfortable snorkelling in the sea and can swim at least 50 metres without stopping, you will be fine.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
This tour is genuinely accessible to older travellers who can swim confidently. There are no high-altitude challenges, strenuous hikes, or overnight treks. The main physical requirement is comfort in open water snorkelling. If you have any heart or respiratory conditions, consult your GP before booking.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
Boarding and disembarking the gulet involves steps, ladders, and movement on a vessel that can rock in open water. The MV Felicity is not suitable for people with severe mobility impairments. If you have concerns, please contact us before booking so we can discuss whether the vessel and activities are appropriate.
Is the snorkelling suitable for non-swimmers or beginners?
No. You need to be a confident swimmer in open water to participate in the snorkelling activities, including whale shark encounters. The research activities take place in open sea conditions, not a swimming pool. Basic snorkel equipment is provided, but previous open-water snorkelling experience is strongly recommended.
Is the Maldives safe to visit?
The Maldives is one of the safest tourist destinations in Asia. It is politically stable, crime rates are low in tourist areas, and the marine environment is well-managed. The main safety considerations are sun exposure, ocean currents, and staying with the group during water activities. Your crew and MWSR scientist are experienced in managing safe snorkelling conditions.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Solo women travellers regularly join this tour. The intimate group size of up to 12 passengers means the cruise has a sociable, safe atmosphere throughout.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
The MV Felicity operates with a fully crewed boat including emergency communication equipment. Male, the capital, has medical facilities for serious emergencies. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is compulsory. The MWSR scientist and crew carry first aid equipment on board.
What is the MV Felicity like?
MV Felicity is a Turkish gulet with 7 air-conditioned cabins: 4 double and 3 twin, each with en-suite bathroom. The boat has a spacious outdoor deck for relaxation and meals, an indoor dining area, and a full galley. All meals are prepared on board by the crew cook. The boat carries snorkelling equipment for all passengers.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi and phone connectivity in the outer atolls of the Maldives is limited or non-existent. Male has good connectivity, but once the boat is cruising between islands, you should expect to be largely offline. This is part of the appeal of the experience.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
The MV Felicity is a single vessel and all cabins are the same standard. Because the boat only carries 12 passengers, all accommodation is already at a comfortable and intimate level. If you want to add nights in Male before or after the cruise, we can arrange hotel accommodation there.
What kind of food will we eat?
All meals are prepared on board by the crew cook: three meals per day for all 8 days are included. Expect fresh fish, rice, vegetables, and a mix of local and international dishes using ingredients sourced in Male at the start of the cruise. Fresh tropical fruits are served throughout.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Fresh water on board is desalinated and safe for drinking. The crew will advise on water use during the cruise. The Maldives tap water in Male is generally safe, but bottled water is widely available.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. Solo travellers regularly join this cruise. With only 12 passengers maximum, bonds form naturally over shared research activities and meals. The intimate boat environment is very sociable.
Do I have to share a room?
The tour is priced based on double or twin occupancy. Solo travellers are paired with a same-sex room-mate where possible. A single cabin supplement is available if you prefer your own cabin. Book the supplement at the time of reservation.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
The MV Felicity carries a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 12 passengers. Groups are typically a mix of conservation enthusiasts, divers, snorkellers, and travellers with a genuine interest in marine wildlife. Ages range widely.
Can I book this as a private charter?
Yes. The MV Felicity can be chartered privately for groups. Contact us for a private charter quotation.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The open-ocean snorkelling and conservation activities require confident swimming ability. The minimum age is not formally stated, but the activities are best suited to adults and older teenagers who can swim confidently in open sea conditions.
Do I need a visa for the Maldives?
No. All nationalities receive a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival in the Maldives. No advance application is required. You will need a valid passport and proof of onward travel.
What should I pack?
Swimwear, a rash vest (essential for sun protection during snorkelling), reef-safe sunscreen, a mask and snorkel if you have your own (equipment provided but personal gear is more comfortable), a light sarong or cover-up for any beach stops, and light casual clothing for evenings on deck. The Maldives is Muslim-majority: dress modestly when visiting inhabited islands.
Are any vaccinations required?
No vaccinations are currently required for the Maldives. Standard recommended vaccines include Hepatitis A and Tetanus. Consult your GP or travel clinic before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. You book your own international flights to Male Velana International Airport (MLE). The tour starts and ends in Male.
What about tipping?
Tips for the captain, crew, and MWSR scientist are entirely at your discretion and are not included in the tour price. Cash is the preferred method. Your guide will brief suggested amounts at the welcome meeting.
Can I add scuba diving to this trip?
The research activities are based on snorkelling, but scuba diving can be arranged through local dive operators at some stops along the route. Bring your dive certification if you want to take advantage of this. Diving costs are not included in the tour price and are arranged locally.
Can I extend my time in Male?
Yes. Extra nights in Male before or after the cruise can be arranged. Male has hotels at a range of price points, and the city has its own interesting character separate from the resort islands.
How far ahead should I book?
Departures are limited and the MV Felicity carries only 12 passengers. This tour sells out well in advance of most departure dates. We recommend booking as early as possible, ideally 6 months or more ahead.
How does booking work?
Complete the online reservation form via the Dates and Prices tab. Pay a deposit or hold a reservation. Full balance is due eight weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory and must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and repatriation. Given that the cruise operates in a remote island environment, ensure your policy covers marine activities including snorkelling. World Nomads Travel Insurance covers a wide range of water-based activities.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding-scale cancellation fee applies. Full terms are in our booking conditions. We are UK-registered and your payments are financially protected through Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are already sold out?
Join the waitlist, or contact us to discuss a private charter date. Due to the boat's limited capacity and limited departures, this is one of our most frequently sold-out tours.
