Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Taste of Turkey tour?
Taste of Turkey is our flagship 8-day introduction to Turkey's greatest hits, running Istanbul to Istanbul. You cover two continents, two millennia of history, and landscapes ranging from the Aegean coast to the surreal white terraces of Pamukkale. Highlights include the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, the Gallipoli battlefields, legendary Troy, the remarkably preserved Roman city of Ephesus, and the calcium travertines of Pamukkale. Groups are capped at 20, a local English-speaking guide is with you throughout, and all transport and most entrance fees are included.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Turkey?
Yes, it is purpose-built for first-timers. You see the essential historical sites in a logical route, have a local guide explaining the context at each stop, and stay in 4 to 5-star hotels every night. The pace is busy but not exhausting, and there is free time built in to explore Istanbul at the end.
What is the difference between this and your other Turkey tours?
Taste of Turkey (8 days) is the western Turkey circuit: Istanbul, Gallipoli, Troy, Ephesus and Pamukkale. Eastern Turkey Encounters (9 days) goes in the opposite direction, covering Cappadocia's underground cities, Mount Nemrut, Gobekli Tepe and Sanliurfa. The Fethiye to Demre Gulet (4 days) trades sightseeing for sailing the turquoise Turkish coast on a traditional wooden gulet. The ANZAC Day 2-Day tour focuses specifically on the Gallipoli dawn service. If you want both west and east in one trip, the Crossroads of Turkey itinerary combines them.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
Turkey's west coast is pleasant from April to early June and September to November, with daytime temperatures of roughly 15-25°C and far fewer crowds than midsummer. Summer departures (June to August) are hotter, with Pamukkale and Ephesus reaching the mid-30s, but tours start early in the day to beat the worst heat. Winters (December to February) are cooler and quieter, particularly in Istanbul. The tour runs year-round with departures most Saturdays.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Turkey tours floating around. But this is not a coach trip with a clipboard guide. Your price covers 7 nights in 4 to 5-star hotels (including a thermal spa hotel in Pamukkale), all transport in private A/C vehicles, a domestic flight from Denizli back to Istanbul, entrance fees to the main sites, a tipping kitty, and a local English-speaking guide on every sightseeing day. Add up the equivalent independent costs and you will quickly see how it stacks up.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 7 nights in 4 to 5-star hotels, all transport and transfers in private A/C vehicles, a domestic flight from Denizli to Istanbul on day 7, a 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfer service at Istanbul, entrance fees to the sites listed in the itinerary, a local English-speaking guide throughout, a tipping kitty, and meals as indicated (7 breakfasts, 4 dinners).
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, meals not listed in the itinerary, drinks and personal expenses, and tips for your guide and driver at the end of the tour. Your guide will brief appropriate current amounts at the start of the tour. Budget for some spending money for lunches, the Grand Bazaar, and optional activities in Istanbul.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can hold a reservation online, pay a deposit to lock in your spot, or pay in full. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure. Reserve now and pay later is also available if you want to secure dates while you sort flights.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Moderate. You will spend several hours on your feet each day at sites like Ephesus, the Gallipoli battlefields, and the Pamukkale terraces, often in warm weather. The terrain is generally flat to gently sloping. Transport between cities is by private A/C minibus or domestic flight, so the travel legs are comfortable. If you can comfortably walk for 3 to 4 hours in warm conditions, you will be fine.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
Not a problem. A broad mix of ages joins our Turkey tours, including many travellers in their 50s, 60s and 70s. The guide sets a sensible pace and the itinerary includes free time in Istanbul where you can rest as needed. Attitude matters far more than age on this tour.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
Some sites involve uneven ancient cobblestones, steps and sloped terrain that are hard to avoid, particularly at Ephesus, Troy and Pamukkale. Please get in touch before booking and we will talk honestly through your specific situation. A private departure with a customised pace is often the right solution.
How hot does it actually get?
Summer (June to August) on the Aegean coast can reach 35-40°C, which is why we start sightseeing early. The Pamukkale terraces are visited in the morning for the same reason. October to April is far more comfortable at 15-25°C. Bring a sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle for all seasons.
Is Turkey safe to visit right now?
Yes. The tourist regions on this tour (Istanbul, the Aegean coast, Pamukkale) are among Turkey's most visited areas and are well-policed, with a large and well-developed tourism infrastructure. Our local team monitors conditions continuously and we would never run a tour we would not send our own families on. Check the latest Foreign Office travel advice before you depart.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes, and we host many solo female travellers on our Turkey tours. Modest dress (shoulders and knees covered at mosques and more conservative towns) makes daily life much smoother. You are with a guide and a small group throughout, and your hotels are vetted 4 to 5-star properties with 24-hour reception.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your tour guide is your first point of contact and can arrange a doctor or pharmacy visit quickly. Istanbul, Kusadasi and Pamukkale all have hospitals and clinics used to treating tourists. Travel insurance with proper medical cover is compulsory and must be in place before you join the tour.
Will I be hassled by vendors and touts?
Some, particularly around the Grand Bazaar and the Hippodrome in Istanbul. Your guide knows the dynamic and will give you practical tips on how to browse without feeling pressured. Most travellers find the atmosphere in the bazaars adds to the experience rather than detracting from it.
What is the accommodation actually like?
You stay in 4 to 5-star hotels throughout. In Istanbul this is typically the Port Bosphorus Hotel near the Galata Tower. In Canakkale the MD Barbaros Hotel is in the city centre close to the Archaeological Museum. In Kusadasi the 4-star Ilayda Avantgarde offers ocean views and a rooftop pool. In Pamukkale the Adempira Hotel includes hot spring baths, a hammam and an on-site sauna. All rooms have A/C, en-suite bathrooms and Wi-Fi.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Yes, all hotels on this tour include Wi-Fi. Signal quality varies slightly between properties but is reliable at the hotel standard you would expect. A Turkish SIM card, available at Istanbul airport, is a useful backup for data while you are out exploring.
Can I upgrade or add extra nights?
Yes. Pre-tour and post-tour nights in Istanbul can be added as a paid option, staying in the same hotel as the main tour. Private departures allow fully customised accommodation. Extra nights in Istanbul are popular for exploring neighbourhoods like Beyoglu or taking a Bosphorus cruise at your own pace.
What kind of food will we eat?
Turkish cuisine is one of the great culinary traditions and this tour gives you a proper taste of it. Hotel buffet breakfasts feature fresh produce, cheeses, olives and pastries. Included dinners range from Aegean seafood in Kusadasi to grilled meats and mezes in Istanbul. On free days your guide can recommend excellent local restaurants for gozleme, lahmacun, doner and a proper Turkish tea or coffee to finish.
Can you cater for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets?
Yes. Turkish cuisine has an exceptional range of vegetarian options: mezes, stuffed vegetables (dolma), lentil soup, grilled vegetables and freshly baked bread. Vegan eating is very workable. Gluten-free is more limited but manageable with advance notice. Let us know your dietary needs at booking and we will brief the local team.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water and you will be fine. Bottled water is cheap and widely available throughout Turkey. Hotels provide treated water for hot drinks. We partner with Water-to-Go filter bottles, which are a great way to reduce plastic waste and stay hydrated throughout the day.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Absolutely. A good share of each departure books solo. The guide handles all logistics from day one, and the small-group format (maximum 20) means you quickly get to know your travel companions.
Do I have to share a room?
Solo travellers are paired with another guest of the same gender by default. If you would prefer your own room throughout, a single supplement is available. Let us know at booking and we will confirm availability.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 20 travellers, with departures guaranteed to run from just 2 bookings. ANZAC Day departures may be larger (up to 45) due to demand. The typical mix is solos, couples and friend pairs from the UK, US, Canada, Australia and Europe, mostly in their 30s to 70s.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The Taste of Turkey itinerary can run as a private departure on dates of your choosing, with customisable accommodation options. Contact us for a tailored quote.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
Older children and teenagers generally love the variety of history and landscapes on this tour. For families with younger children, a private departure lets you adjust the pace and focus. There is no stated minimum age for this tour. Get in touch and we will help work out what suits your family.
Do I need a visa for Turkey?
Most nationalities now require an e-visa for Turkey, applied for online before travel via the official Turkish e-visa website. UK nationals have been exempt from visa requirements for stays up to 90 days in each 180-day period, as have citizens of several Schengen countries. Arrangements are subject to change, so check the current requirements for your nationality before booking.
What should I pack?
Lightweight clothing with some modest options (shoulders and knees covered for mosques and conservative towns), comfortable walking shoes for cobblestone sites, a light jacket for evenings and the A/C minibus, a sun hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, a small daypack for sightseeing, and a Type C (two-pin round) plug adapter for 220V sockets. No luggage weight limit is set by the tour, but check your airline's baggage rules.
Are any vaccinations required?
No vaccinations are legally required for entry from most countries. Recommended precautions typically include Hepatitis A and Tetanus. There is a low malaria risk in some southeastern regions, but the areas visited on this tour are not affected. Consult your GP or a travel clinic 6 to 8 weeks before departure for current recommendations.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. The tour starts and ends in Istanbul, which is served by Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW). You are free to book any flights that suit you. We are happy to arrange flights if you prefer, just ask.
What about tipping?
Tipping (baksheesh) is an important part of Turkish service culture and wages are low. A tipping kitty is included in the tour price to cover drivers, hotel staff and incidentals along the way. Tips for your guide and any local guides you encounter are separate and at your discretion. Your guide will brief current suggested amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I add a cooking class?
Yes. A Kusadasi Cooking Class is available as a paid option: you venture into the Turkish countryside and cook authentic dishes like Sultan Kofte, Manti and Yaprak Sarma alongside a professional chef, then enjoy your meal with local wine. An Istanbul Cooking Class is also available, run in a hotel kitchen with a rooftop view.
Can I add extra days in Istanbul?
Yes. A pre-tour extra night and a post-tour extra night in Istanbul are both bookable options, staying in the same hotel as the main tour. Useful for arriving a day early to get over jet lag, or staying on to explore neighbourhoods like Beyoglu, take a Bosphorus cruise, or visit the Grand Bazaar at a slower pace.
Can I combine this tour with Eastern Turkey?
If you want to see both the western highlights (covered on this tour) and the east (Cappadocia, Mount Nemrut, Gobekli Tepe), ask us about the Crossroads of Turkey itinerary, which is mentioned in the source as a natural extension. Private and tailor-made combinations are available on request.
How far ahead should I book?
The tour runs year-round with departures most Saturdays and additional Tuesday departures in summer. ANZAC Day departures fill up many months ahead and should be booked as early as possible. For regular departures, booking 2 to 4 months ahead is sensible for peak spring and autumn season.
How does booking work?
Reserve your spot online via the Dates and Prices tab. You can pay a deposit, pay in full, or hold a reservation. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure. Payment by card, bank transfer or cheque. You will receive instant booking confirmation and a pre-departure information pack.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, it is compulsory. You will not be able to join the tour without it. Your policy must cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation and repatriation. We partner with World Nomads, who cover over 150 adventure activities. Send us your policy number before departure.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations made well ahead of departure receive a refund of payments made. Closer-in cancellations attract fees on a sliding scale. Full terms are in our booking conditions, sent at reservation. Encounters Travel is UK-registered with financial protection via Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are already sold out?
Get in touch. Cancellations sometimes free up space and we can add you to a waitlist. We can also run the itinerary as a private departure on different dates, or suggest the Eastern Turkey Encounters, Fethiye to Demre Gulet, or ANZAC Day tour as alternatives with availability.

My partner and I recently had a two-week holiday in Turkey, organised through Encounters Travel. We wanted something tailored to our interests and availability, and Gavin at Encounters created a bespoke version of an existing tour for us. As we worked out what this tour might involve, it necessitated quite a few questions and answers going back and forth, as we refined our plans. Each time Gavin was very prompt to respond, did so in full, and very courteously. Encounters Travel liaised with all of the local agents and catered for everything we had asked for. We ended up having an absolutely fantastic (and wholly unforgettable) holiday, seeing sights that we would never have been able to fit in if we were trying to do it completely by ourselves. On the evidence of this trip, we would very strongly recommend them to others looking for an agent who'll help to take some of the hard work out of planning a holiday.

I bought a ticket thru living social at 3am when I couldn’t sleep and then said to myself “What did I just do?!” turns out what I did was make one of the BEST DECISIONS OF MY LIFE!!! The travel agency was easy to work with and always available via telephone (UK HOURS) I traveled alone for an additional few of 200 or something but they found me a roommate and I elected to take the roomie and get a refund on solo fee (another great decision..roomie was from Vegas and a great guy) I traveled from LA to Turkey and then to Cairo the planes were nice and roomie. They fed ya so much I was stuffed by the time I got to Turkey (tip: TURKEY AIRPORT SUCKS! It’s HUGE,all the gates are far apart and you are only guided by arrows and no one helps you,so move Swift if you have to meet a connecting flight) upon arrival to Cairo I was met by a sharply dressed man with a sign that greeted me in the traditional Muslim greeting and we were immediately friends! He walked me to get my visa ($20 American dollars cash) through customs and it was a breeze...with a guide it’s SPEEDY. We were met by a air condition car (IT WAS HOT) they took me to a hotel across the street from the pyramids and he checked me in. (Tip: Security is HIGH everywhere and you will be searched by security at all times entering and leaving.. you will never feel unsafe. Plan on seeing guards with machine guns in the street and hotels..you will grow accustomed to it) I was there for 10 days and EACH DAY GOT BETTER!! The food, hotels, monuments, experience and PRICE CANNOT BE BEAT!! I crawled inside of the Great Pyramid of Cheops, seen the Sphinx, slept overnight on a felucca on the Nile, took a sleeper train to Aswan, went to a Nubian Village for a traditional dinner, snorkeled in the Red Sea, toured the Cairo Museum,Sunrise Hot Air Ballon ride over the Valley of the Kings, stayed at a luxury all inclusive Sea Side resort in Hurghada, drove thru the Sahara Desert to monuments and witnessed the sunrise, toured downtown Cairo market, visited the Synagogue that Moses worshipped and the well he drank from, and so many things in between and I did it all for UNDER $1550 US dollars. No guess work, this company TAKES CARE OF EVERYTHING!! Our tour guide “Big Mo” was one of the most passionate and insightful people I have ever met. His expertise of Egyptian history and the culture of his people is undeniable. He even went water sliding with me in Hurghada!! I cannot express how fortunate U feel to have had this experience in my lifetime. I was humbled by the people and inspired to see people with my likeness etched in massive stone and in the walls of the monuments and tombs. I met some of the most beautiful people inside and out in this country. They LOVE AMERICANS and they desperately need your tourism. I cannot say enough about this package that Encounters Travel has put together. All vehicles, hotels, restaurants and amenities they took us to were clean and safe. They include some meals the guides can be trusted. Be sure to give them the best tip you can at the end of the tour in AMERICAN MONEY....they will have earned it!! Now the bad....but you can’t escape these; IT’S HOT...no matter when you go (it’s Africa for goodness sake!) you will sweat all the time..so bring something to wipe your face like a few dark hand towels for daily use, hand sanitizer AND A HAND FAN...trust me some air is better then NONE and you can shield your face when the guides talk to you out in the sun but I recommend a fold away umbrella too TRUST ME!!! Only other thing is the street merchants..the first two days you are sympathetic to the plight after that you just instantly become a rude American and ignore them lol. They will try to pressure you, place things in your arm (I opened my arm and let them drop), give you a “free gift” (be warned NOTHING in Egypt is free) and try to pull you away from the group, always consult your guide they will help you steer clear and will help you to not get cheated. Last but MOST IMPORTANTLY when in the monuments, temples and other places NEVER LET A FRIENDLY PERSON HAVE YOU CAMERA TO TAKE PICS OF YOU...they will demand money and try to intimidate you and tell you they work for the Govt and wait for you at the gates if you don’t give them what you want. Just be polite and keep saying “no thank you while walking away” when you get close to your guide they will get the hint and leave you alone. Other than that..go have the TIME OF YOUR LIFE IN EGYPT!!! You will NEVER REGRET IT!

What a GREAT experience! I was a solo traveler and a bit worried but everyone at the office staff answered all my questions promptly assuring me I'd be in an English speaking group. I even missed my initial flight Nd Travel Encounters was able to coordinate my new transfer pick up time in Istanbul. The tour itself was also simply amazing, especially if you like History! Great sites with plenty to do, great itinerary including Troy, Galipoli, Blue Mosque, Haggai Sophia, Ephesus, Artemis, Kayakoy, etc. had a great/same guide and driver for the duration of he trip and all 4 star hotels. Nicely arranged trip, at a nice price. :)

I can really recommend to book a trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL. Stumbled across them by accident when i was searching the net for best prices. Being from South Africa with the weak ZAR they came out tops. Booked the 10 day Anatolian Adventure. All entrance fees was included. Thanks to Mariska for always getting back to me immediately. The tour surpassed my expectations and the accommodation provided was mostly 5 star. The tour guide Ilker (from Fez Travel) was amazing. He was very informative and not forgetting our good driver Irfaan. We had a small group of 10. Overall, a great trip. Worth every penny. Will definitely book my next trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.
