Thailand, officially the Kingdom of Thailand, is formerly known as Siam. This country is located at the centre of the Southeast Asian Indochinese Peninsula and encompasses 76 provinces. Thailand is also the world's 50th largest country by total area and the 21st most populous country.
The capital of Thailand is Bangkok, which is the largest city and a special administrative area. Thailand is bordered to the north by Myanmar and Laos, to the east by Laos and Cambodia, to the south by the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia, and to the west by the Andaman Sea
This country is a unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy under a military junta. Thailand is classified as a newly industrialised economy and has the second largest economy in Southeast Asia. The country is divided into four regions: Northern Thailand, Northeastern Thailand, Central Thailand and Southern Thailand. The regions each have a different language, culture and historical background. The climate of Thailand is largely affected by monsoon winds. Thailand experiences three official seasons: hot, cool and wet.
Tourism makes up 6% of the economy and Thailand is an extremely popular travel destination. Thailand's attractions include diving spots, museums, archaeological sites, Buddhist temples and palaces.
The official language of Thailand is Thai, which is the principal language of education and the government and is spoken throughout the country. English is a mandatory school subject, but many of the local people do not speak it fluently, especially outside of the bigger cities.
