Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Bolivian Encounters tour?
Bolivian Encounters is a 15-day small-group adventure that takes you from La Paz deep into the heart of South America. You'll cross the vast salt flats of Uyuni at dawn, explore the silver-mining city of Potosi, wander the colonial streets of Sucre, and venture into the Amazon pampas in search of caiman, anaconda and pink river dolphins. With a maximum of 14 travellers and a mix of guesthouses and 2-star hotels, the pace is sociable but never rushed.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Bolivia?
Yes, and it's one of the best ways to see the country properly. The itinerary is built around Bolivia's unmissable highlights, the route is well organised, and your guide handles the logistics so you can focus on the experience. If you've never been to South America before, just be prepared for altitude: La Paz sits at over 3,600m, so give yourself a day or two before you exert yourself.
What's the difference between this and your other South America tours?
Bolivian Encounters focuses entirely on Bolivia over 15 days, giving you time to go deep rather than wide. Mountains to the Lakes (21 days) extends the journey into Peru and Lake Titicaca, making it ideal if you have more time. Walking with the Incas (19 days) is centred on Peru and the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu Calling (15 days) is a Peru-focused itinerary for those whose main goal is Machu Picchu itself. Bolivia is genuinely unlike anywhere else in South America, and this tour is the most thorough way to see it.
What's the best time of year to do this tour?
The dry season from May to October is the most popular time, with clear skies over the salt flats and good conditions for the pampas. The wet season (November to April) brings the famous mirror effect on the salt flats, which makes for extraordinary photography but can affect road access in parts of the country. The tour runs throughout the year, so speak to the team about what each season actually delivers.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper tours floating around. What you're paying for here is 15 days of accommodation in well-located guesthouses and 2-star hotels, 14 breakfasts, 7 lunches and 5 dinners, all overland transport in private vehicles, a knowledgeable local guide, national park and entrance fees, and the Amazon pampas lodge. Bolivia is not an easy country to navigate independently, and the logistics of getting to and from the salt flats, pampas and colonial cities on your own would eat up both time and money.
What's actually included in the price?
Included are all accommodation throughout the tour, 14 breakfasts, 7 lunches and 5 dinners, all transport in private overland vehicles, the services of a local English-speaking guide, all group activities and excursions listed in the itinerary, and entrance fees for included sites.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included are your international flights, visa fees (if applicable), travel insurance, meals not listed in the itinerary, drinks, personal spending, and tips for your guide and driver. Your guide will brief you on current tip amounts at the start of the tour. Budget also for any optional extras you want to add.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can secure your place with a deposit, or use the reserve-now-pay-later option to hold your spot. The full balance is due 8 weeks before departure. See the booking page for the current deposit amounts.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Bolivia's altitude is the main physical factor. La Paz sits above 3,600m, and the salt flats and altiplano are similarly high. Most travellers acclimatise well with a gentle first day, but if you have heart or respiratory conditions, speak to your doctor beforehand. The touring itself is not strenuous: most days involve walking around cities, markets and natural sites at an easy pace. The Amazon pampas section involves boat travel and guided walks on flat terrain.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
Bolivian Encounters attracts a wide age range, and the pace is well suited to older travellers. The key caveat is altitude: older travellers, or anyone with cardiovascular concerns, should consult their GP before booking and take altitude acclimatisation seriously. Once acclimatised, the tour is very accessible.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The tour involves cobblestone streets in Potosi and Sucre, some walking on uneven ground around the salt flats, and boat travel in the pampas. Most of these are manageable for travellers with moderate mobility, but the altitude adds an extra layer of consideration. If you have specific mobility limitations, contact us and we can advise on whether this itinerary is a good fit or whether a private departure with adjusted pace would work better.
Is Bolivia safe to visit right now?
Bolivia is a well-established destination for independent and group travellers. As with any country, petty theft in busy markets and city centres is the main concern, and your guide will brief you on areas and situations to be aware of. We recommend checking the latest government travel advice from your home country before departure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Many solo women travel to Bolivia without issue, and being part of a small group naturally adds a layer of comfort and security. Your guide is on hand throughout the tour, and accommodation on the tour is in established, reputable properties.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide will assist you in accessing local medical care. Bolivia has medical facilities in La Paz and the main cities. The key risk to be aware of is altitude sickness: your guide knows the signs and protocols. This is why comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation cover is compulsory on all our tours.
Do I need malaria prophylactics for Bolivia?
The Amazon pampas section of the tour passes through a low-risk malaria zone. Your doctor or travel clinic can advise you on whether prophylactics are recommended for your specific circumstances. Mosquito repellent is essential in the pampas section regardless.
What's the accommodation actually like?
The tour uses a mix of well-located guesthouses and 2-star hotels throughout. In La Paz you stay at Hotel Estrella Andina, in Uyuni at Tambo Aymara, in Potosi at Hotel Tukos La Casa Real, and in Sucre at Hotel Sucre. The salt flats section uses basic accommodation appropriate to the remote location. The Amazon pampas is based at a dedicated lodge. All accommodation is twin or double en-suite where available.
What's the pampas lodge like?
The Pampas Lodge is a purpose-built eco-lodge in the Amazon lowlands. It's rustic by city hotel standards, but comfortable: rooms have beds, fans and basic en-suite facilities. The appeal is the location: you're in the jungle, and the sounds, wildlife and atmosphere more than make up for the simpler setup.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Most hotels in La Paz, Potosi and Sucre have Wi-Fi. The salt flats accommodation and the Amazon pampas lodge have limited or no connectivity, which is part of the experience.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
If you're looking for more flexibility or a higher accommodation standard throughout, contact us about a private departure. We can tailor the accommodation to your preferences.
What kind of food will we eat?
Bolivian food is hearty and flavourful: salteñas (stuffed pastries), api (hot maize drink), grilled llama, freshwater fish from Lake Titicaca, and market-stall plates piled with rice, potatoes and stewed meat. In Sucre and La Paz you'll find excellent restaurants catering to all tastes. The pampas lodge meals are simple but filling.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled or purified water throughout Bolivia. The hotels provide drinking water, but tap water should not be drunk. We recommend bringing a Water-to-Go filter bottle, which removes over 99.9% of contaminants and helps cut down on single-use plastic. Use discount code ENCOUNTERS25 for 25% off.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Absolutely. Small groups of up to 14 people are ideal for meeting people, and many solo travellers find the Bolivian Encounters group becomes a close-knit travel family by the end of 15 days. If you're happy to share a room, the single supplement is avoidable.
Do I have to share a room?
If you book a solo place and are happy to share, we'll pair you with another solo traveller of the same gender at no extra charge. If you prefer your own room, the single supplement is available. Please note that in some remote locations, single rooms may not always be available.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 14 travellers (Bolivia and South America cap). The demographic tends to be a mix of solo travellers, couples and friends in their 20s to 50s, united by an interest in authentic travel off the beaten track.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures are available on flexible dates and can be customised to your pace and accommodation preferences. Contact the team for a quotation.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
There is no minimum age stated, but the altitude and the length of some overland journeys make this better suited to teenagers and adults. The Amazon pampas section involves wildlife viewing that children would likely find exciting. Contact us to discuss suitability for your family's ages.
Do I need a visa for Bolivia?
Many nationalities including UK, EU and Australian passport holders can enter Bolivia without a visa for stays under 90 days. US citizens can obtain a visa on arrival. Visa rules can change, so check the current requirements for your nationality on the official Bolivian immigration website before you travel.
What should I pack?
Layers are essential: La Paz and the altiplano can be cold at night even in summer, while the pampas is hot and humid. Pack light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and trousers for the pampas (sun and insect protection), warm layers and a wind-proof jacket for the high-altitude sections, and comfortable walking shoes. Bolivia uses two-prong round sockets at 220V. A universal adaptor is wise.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations for Bolivia include Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid. There is a low malaria risk in the Amazon lowlands section. Your GP or travel clinic can advise on prophylactics and current recommendations. Check the most up-to-date guidance before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No, flights are not included in the tour price. You book your own flights to La Paz's El Alto International Airport (LPB). If you'd like help sourcing flights, just ask and we can point you in the right direction.
What about tipping?
Tipping is customary in Bolivia. Your guide will brief you on current suggested amounts for the guide, driver and any local helpers at the start of the tour. Bring cash in US dollars or Bolivianos for tips.
Can I add an extra day in La Paz before or after the tour?
Yes. An extra day in La Paz is available as a paid add-on at either the start or end of the tour, staying in the same hotel. This is a good option if you want to acclimatise before the tour starts, or explore more of the city after it ends.
Can I add a jungle excursion?
Yes, a jungle excursion is available as an extension after the main tour. Allow at least one spare day after the tour ends if you want to take this up. Ask the team for details when booking.
Can I combine Bolivia with Peru?
Yes. Mountains to the Lakes (21 days) extends the journey into Peru and includes Lake Titicaca, or you could follow Bolivian Encounters with Walking with the Incas (19 days, Peru and the Inca Trail) or Machu Picchu Calling (15 days). Speak to the team about linking itineraries.
How far ahead should I book?
Bolivian Encounters runs with small groups of up to 14, so popular dates fill up. Booking 3-6 months ahead is advisable, especially for the peak dry-season months from June to August.
How does booking work?
Reserve online through the Dates & Prices tab. You can pay a deposit to secure your place, use the reserve-now-pay-later option, or pay in full. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure. You'll receive a booking confirmation with all the pre-departure details you need.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory on all Encounters Travel tours. Your policy must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation. World Nomads Travel Insurance covers over 150 adventure activities and is a popular choice among our travellers.
What's your cancellation policy?
Cancellation charges apply on a sliding scale depending on how far in advance you cancel. Full details are in the booking conditions on our website. All bookings are financially protected through Trust My Travel, a UK-registered financial protection scheme.
What if my preferred dates are sold out?
You can join the waitlist for your preferred departure, enquire about a private departure on alternative dates, or consider a related tour such as Mountains to the Lakes (21 days, Bolivia and Peru) or Machu Picchu Calling (15 days, Peru). Contact the team to discuss options.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Accommodation

We use good quality small & simple hotels & guesthouses on this tour as well as a bed bus that may have half or full reclining seats.
Accommodation is based on twin, triple or double en-suite rooms. We will endeavour to give all couples a private double room. Single travellers may choose to pay a single room supplement to guarantee themselves a single room throughout the tour. Alternatively, they may choose to share a room with one or two other travellers of the same sex. If there are no other single travellers available for you to pair up with at the time of your booking, then we will need to add the single supplement to your tour price, but will refund this or deduct it from your balance payment if we are able to pair you up later on.
