Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Cambodia Encounters tour?
Six days, two cities, and one of the most affecting historical and architectural journeys in Southeast Asia. You start with Phnom Penh's essential but sobering account of the Khmer Rouge era (Tuol Sleng Museum and Choeung Ek Killing Fields), balanced by the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. Then the tour moves north to Tonle Sap Lake's floating communities, a stay at the sacred Kulen Mountain in Thisak Resort, and two days in Siem Reap exploring Angkor Thom, Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm. The group is capped at 12 and the tour wraps with dinner at Spoons Restaurant, a social enterprise training underprivileged Cambodian youth in hospitality.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Cambodia?
Yes. The 6-day itinerary is designed as a complete first visit, covering the two headline destinations (Phnom Penh and Siem Reap) with the context that makes both meaningful. The Killing Fields visit is confronting but essential for understanding Cambodia's recent history, and it is handled thoughtfully throughout the tour.
What is the difference between this and your other Cambodia tours?
Cambodia Encounters (6 days) covers Cambodia's key sites in a focused, standalone itinerary. Vietnam Encounters (10 days) covers Vietnam on its own. The Vietnam and Cambodia Encounters tour (15 days) combines both countries into a single connected journey, starting in Vietnam and finishing in Siem Reap. If you want to explore both countries in one trip, the 15-day option is worth considering.
What is the best time of year to visit Cambodia?
November to March is the best season: the cool dry period when temperatures sit around 25-30 degrees Celsius, skies are clear and the roads are in good condition. April and May are hot and humid. The monsoon season (June to October) brings heavy afternoon rains and some roads become difficult, though Angkor Wat looks spectacular with green surroundings and fewer crowds.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheap Cambodia tours. What you are paying for here is 5 nights in 4-star hotels, all transport and transfers in private AC vehicles throughout (not public transport or shared minibuses), a local guide for all sightseeing, admission fees to all included sites, the Tonle Sap boat trip, the Kulen Mountain resort stay, and a group of no more than 12 people. The included dinner at Spoons Restaurant is part of a social enterprise, so that money directly supports local youth training.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 5 nights in 4-star hotels; all private AC transport and transfers; 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfer service; local tour guide for all sightseeing; admission fees for all included sites; Phnom Penh historical tour (Tuol Sleng and Choeung Ek); Royal Palace and National Museum; Tonle Sap Kampong Khleang floating village boat trip; overnight at Thisak Resort (Kulen Mountain); Tbeng community experience; Kulen Mountain tour (River of a Thousand Lingas, waterfall); Angkor temples tour (Angkor Thom, Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm); Street 60 night market visit; and dinner at Spoons Restaurant.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights; Cambodia visa fee (e-visa recommended in advance, check current rates on the official Cambodian e-visa portal); travel insurance; single room supplements; meals not listed in the itinerary (lunches are not included); drinks and personal spending; guide and driver tips.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit to secure your place and the balance is due eight weeks before departure. Reserve-now-pay-later is also available at checkout.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Easy to moderate. The Angkor temple complex involves a full day of walking on generally even paved surfaces, with some steps at individual temples. Ta Prohm has uneven roots and stone sections. The Kulen Mountain day includes walking on mountain paths to see the waterfall and River of a Thousand Lingas. The Tonle Sap boat trip is entirely seated. A reasonable level of general fitness is all that is needed.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
This tour suits all ages. The pace is not rushed and there are rest stops and free time built into each day. Angkor Wat is large and the full-day temple tour involves significant walking, but no section is strenuous. The private vehicle transport means you are never far from a comfortable seat.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The main consideration is the Angkor temples, which involve some steep stone steps at certain structures. Angkor Wat itself has a large flat main courtyard accessible without steps. The floating village boat trip and Phnom Penh city tours are easily accessible. Contact us before booking to discuss your specific needs.
Is Cambodia safe to visit right now?
Cambodia is a well-established tourist destination and the sites on this tour (Phnom Penh and Siem Reap) are visited by hundreds of thousands of international tourists annually. Normal urban precautions apply in Phnom Penh. Check UK Foreign Office or US State Department travel advice before departure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Cambodia is generally safe for solo female travellers. Phnom Penh and Siem Reap are well set up for tourism and your guide accompanies you throughout the sightseeing days. Modest dress at temples (shoulders and knees covered) is required and reduces unwanted attention.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Phnom Penh and Siem Reap both have private clinics and hospitals used by international visitors. Your guide knows the nearest reputable facilities. Travel insurance covering medical treatment and repatriation is compulsory.
Is it safe to try the spider market food?
Fried tarantulas at the Skun spider market are a genuine local delicacy and entirely safe to eat when freshly cooked. There is absolutely no obligation to try one. Your guide will take you through the market and answer any questions about what you are looking at.
What is the accommodation actually like?
You stay in comfortable 4-star hotels in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, all with en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, Wi-Fi and swimming pools. On Day 3 you stay at Thisak Resort at the foot of Kulen Mountain, a countryside property with a more rustic character that places you close to the sacred mountain. It is comfortable rather than city-hotel standard but that is part of what makes it memorable.
What is Thisak Resort at Kulen Mountain like?
Thisak Resort is a countryside retreat set at the base of Phnom Kulen, the sacred mountain that was the birthplace of the Khmer Empire. Rooms are comfortable with en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning. The setting is quiet and surrounded by forest. An optional campfire dinner is available in the evening with a minimum of four participants.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
The city hotels in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap have Wi-Fi throughout. Thisak Resort at Kulen Mountain has more limited connectivity. A local SIM card is inexpensive in Cambodia and provides good mobile data coverage in urban areas.
Can I upgrade or extend my stay?
An extra day in Siem Reap post-tour is available, with optional half-day activities including a cooking class, a silk farm tour, a cycling temples tour and an additional Tonle Sap Lake visit. The tour can also be run as a private departure with upgraded accommodation. Contact us to discuss.
What kind of food will we eat?
Cambodian cuisine is built around rice, fresh herbs, coconut-based curries and river fish. In Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, the restaurant scene is diverse. The included dinner at Spoons Restaurant serves Khmer and international food cooked by hospitality students in a social enterprise setting. The Street 60 night market in Siem Reap has dozens of Khmer street food options including barbecued skewers, noodle soups and fresh fruit.
Can you cater for vegetarian vegan or gluten-free diets?
Vegetarian is very manageable in Cambodia, with rice and vegetable dishes widely available. Vegan is workable with some care around fish sauce, which appears in many traditional recipes. Gluten-free is generally straightforward given the rice-based diet. Inform us at booking and your guide will communicate your needs.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water is not safe to drink in Cambodia. Use sealed bottled water or a filtered water bottle to reduce plastic waste. The Water-to-Go filtered bottle is a good option for this trip. Your guide will advise on safe drinking options at each stop.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The group is capped at 12 and the mix of emotionally significant historical sites and spectacular temple visits creates a genuinely shared experience. Phnom Penh and Siem Reap are also among the easiest Southeast Asian cities for solo independent exploration during free time.
Do I have to share a room?
Accommodation is based on twin or double room occupancy. A single supplement is available for solo travellers who want a private room throughout.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups run with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12 travellers. The Cambodia itinerary attracts a wide age range and a mix of solo travellers, couples and small groups united by an interest in history and culture.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The Cambodia Encounters tour is available as a private departure on flexible dates with a customised itinerary. The tour can also be combined with Vietnam into the Vietnam and Cambodia Encounters 15-day tour.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Killing Fields are genuinely confronting sites covering very recent mass atrocities. These are important parts of understanding Cambodia's history but parents should consider whether their children are ready for this content. The Angkor temples and boat trips are excellent for older children and teenagers.
Do I need a visa for Cambodia?
Most nationalities require a Cambodian visa. An e-visa is available online in advance via the official Cambodian government e-visa portal and is straightforward to obtain. Visa on arrival is also available at major entry points. Check current requirements before departure.
What should I pack?
Lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for tropical heat (25-35 degrees Celsius). Modest dress is required at all temples (shoulders and knees covered; a lightweight sarong or scarf is useful). Comfortable walking shoes or sandals for temple exploration. Sunscreen, insect repellent, and a small first aid kit. Cambodia uses Type A and C power sockets.
Are any vaccinations required?
Consult your GP or a travel clinic. Recommended vaccinations for Cambodia typically include Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Tetanus. Malaria prophylactics may be recommended for some rural or remote areas; the sites on this tour are in urban and well-visited areas where the risk is lower. Consult your GP for personalised advice.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. International flights are not included. Your arrival airport is Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) and your departure airport is Siem Reap International Airport (REP). Both have regular direct and connecting services from major Asian hubs.
What about tipping?
Tipping for your guide and driver is customary and appreciated in Cambodia. Your guide will advise on current appropriate amounts at the start of the tour. Tips are given separately to the guide and driver at the end.
Can I add extra days in Siem Reap?
Yes. An extra day in Siem Reap post-tour is available with a range of optional half-day activities: a local village tour with cooking class, a silk farm visit, a cycling tour of additional temples, a remote temples tour, or a return trip to Tonle Sap Lake.
Can I combine this with Vietnam?
Yes. The Vietnam and Cambodia Encounters tour (15 days) combines a Vietnam itinerary with the Cambodia Encounters content in a single joined-up journey. The Vietnam Encounters tour (10 days) is also available as a standalone if Vietnam is your primary focus.
Can I do a sunrise visit to Angkor Wat?
Sunrise at Angkor Wat is one of the most iconic experiences in Southeast Asia. The full-day Angkor temples tour on Day 5 is structured around the main daytime visit. If you want to add a dedicated sunrise viewing, contact us and we can arrange this as a private early-morning add-on.
How far ahead should I book?
November to March is peak season for Cambodia and popular departures can fill several months in advance. Booking 3-4 months ahead for peak season dates is advisable. The tour is also available as a private departure on any date of the year.
How does booking work?
Reserve online via the Dates and Prices page. Pay a deposit to secure your place or use reserve-now-pay-later. The balance is due eight weeks before departure. Instant confirmation is issued on booking.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory and must cover medical treatment and repatriation. World Nomads Travel Insurance is a recommended starting point. Your policy details must be provided before departure.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale of cancellation charges applies. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Encounters Travel is UK-registered and customer funds are protected by Trust My Travel's financial protection scheme.
What if my dates are already sold out?
Contact us to join the waitlist or book a private departure on alternative dates. The Vietnam and Cambodia Encounters 15-day tour has its own departure schedule and may have availability when the standalone Cambodia Encounters is full.

This was the second tour I booked with Encounter travel. The first one was in Egypt and we had such a fantastic experience that my family and I went directly to them again for Southeast Asia. Our agent was Anthony... he was organized, attentive and very patient with us for all our questions, concerns and requests. He always responded in an excellent timely manner. Our 3 guides in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand were AMAZING!! Phong, Santhou, and Pramote made the experience so wonderful. All 3 were very knowledgeable about their own countries and cultures, we learned so much from them, they were attentive and very friendly. Both the guides and drivers gave great service and greeted us with with bottled water and wipes every day. By the time we left each country, they weren't just our guides, they were friends. My family and I loved this experience so much and have nothing but great things to say about Encounter Travel!!
