Arrive in Nepal, welcome & transfer to hotel

Day 1 Meals TBC

We will be happy to help with flights into Nepal if you wish, and on your arrival our local representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in the centre of Kathmandu. We normally use the Shanker Hotel, which is built around a former royal palace and located in large quiet gardens close to the main touristic area of Thamel.

OPTIONAL EXTRAS

Extra day in Kathmandu - pre-tour
Single room supplement
Arrive in Nepal, welcome & transfer to hotel
DAY 2

Kathmandu city tour

Day 2 Breakfast

There is the option early this morning for a spectacular mountain viewing flight up around Everest.

After breakfast, and an introduction to your city guide, we take you on a tour of the fascinating, sprawling city of Kathmandu. We start by walking from your hotel, through the tourist centre of Thamel, and then through narrow winding streets, passing several street corner temples and stupas to Durbar Square. Here your guide will explain some Nepalese history as you explore the array of Hindu Temples and the old Royal Palace. We then head by car to the outskirts of the city and climb up the many steps leading to the immense Swayambhunath Stupa. Also known for good reason as the 'monkey temple', the stupa sits upon a hill overlooking Kathmandu and gives a spectacular view out over the city. The rest of the day is free for you to explore the city further (further sites can be visited during the tour if you wish).

OPTIONAL EXTRAS

Everest Mountain Flight
Kathmandu city tour
DAY 3

Fly to Bhutan, visit Paro Dzong & Ta Dzong

Day 3 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

We transfer you to the airport for the spectacular flight to Bhutan (try to sit on the left side of the plane for great views of Everest). When you arrive in Paro airport you'll know you've arrived somewhere special as the airport buildings have the same traditional architecture you’ll see throughout the country.

After an introductory lunch and check in to your hotel, you visit Ta Dzong, originally the Watch Tower for the Rinpung Dzong in Paro. Now the National Museum of the Kingdom it boasts a wide range of antique thangkha paintings, textiles, weapons & armour, household objects and natural and historic artifacts.

Next you walk to the nearby Rinpung Dzong or the 'fortress of the heap of jewels'. Dzongs are impressive buildings and host the seat of the district administration and the residence of the monastic school.

Fly to Bhutan, visit Paro Dzong & Ta Dzong
DAY 4

Paro, drive to the Punakha Valley

Day 4 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

Keen birdwatchers may do a pre-breakfast tour this morning and drive up to the Che Le La Pass for sunrise to look for the distinctive Blood Grouse and colourful Himalayan Monal.

After breakfast, you drive to the Punakha Valley (77km, approx. 3hrs). On the way, and after a winding climb through mixed forests, you'll stop at the Dochula Pass (3,050m) for tea/coffee and in clear weather, to enjoy spectacular views of the Eastern Himalayan range.

After descending past the new Botanic Gardens the road winds through beautiful forests and gradually opens out into the Punakha Valley where after lunch, you can take a short walk through fields at the bottom of the valley to Chimi Lhakhang, built by Lama Drukpa Kuenley or the Divine Madman. The temple is renowned for blessing barren women with fertility.

Paro, drive to the Punakha Valley
DAY 5

Punakha Valley walk & sightseeing

Day 5 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

You start this morning with a walk to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyel Chorten. This Chorten stands majestically on a strategic ridge above the Punakha valley and was visualised out of Buddhist treasure teachings by Thragthung Dudjom Lingpa. A pleasant walk down through fields full of chillie, bean & wheat crops takes us to the riverbank, from where you can either drive, or extend your walk through fields and forests downstream along the river towards Punakha.

After lunch you visit the spectacular Punakha Dzong, which lies between two rivers known as Phochu and Mochu. Symbolizing masculine and the feminine co-existence, their currents are of different colours and they unite at this spot.

Punakha Valley walk & sightseeing
DAY 6

Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, drive to Thimphu

Day 6 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

This morning, you visit Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, whose unrestored state is a distinct change from the Dzongs in Paro & Punakha, and really gives a feel for how these buildings with their joint monastic & administrative functions, have run things in Bhutan over the centuries. A walk through Wangdi's slightly ramshackle old streets follows before you drive up the valley, passing the site planned for a new rebuild of the whole town centre on the far side of the river.

Further interesting short hikes are also available in the valley, or you can have lunch and then head back over the Dochu La Pass to Thimphu.

Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, drive to Thimphu
DAY 7

Thimphu weekend market & sightseeing

Day 7 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

One of the main highlights in Thimphu is its vast weekend market with its hundreds of different stalls selling a huge range of fresh vegetables, spices, and of course, chillies. There is also a handicrafts & clothing market here, and overall this is a great place to pick up some souvenirs as a memory of your time in Bhutan.

After visiting the market first thing in the morning, the rest of today is set aside for sightseeing tours and visits with your driver and guide. You have a wide choice of options and can discuss with your guide which are of most interest to you. Options include the national Takin research centre, the Memorial Chorten, the School of Arts & Crafts, the Folk Heritage Museum, the National Library, the National Institute of Traditional Medicine, a traditional hand-made paper factory, the Textile Museum, and Trashichhodzong which houses most of the government offices and the King's throne room. Lunch will be included during the day, and if there is an archery tournament taking place, a stop at the national stadium is well worthwhile.

Several short half-day hikes are also available around the valley. Displays of traditional folk dancing also run every day for those who are interested. In the evening you enjoy a Bhutanese meal at a hillside restaurant overlooking the city.

DAY 8

Thimphu sightseeing, drive to Paro

Day 8 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

You have more time this morning to do more sightseeing in and around Thimphu, or to do a short walk into the surrounding hills.

Sometime in the afternoon, we make the short drive of around 2 hours back to Paro.

DAY 9

Taktshang Monastery walk, Paro sightseeing

Day 9 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

You start early today for the 2-3 hour walk uphill to reach the Taktshang monastery, giddily perched on a sheer 800m rock face. Taktshang is probably Bhutan's most famous site, and means 'Tiger's Nest', as legend has it that Guru Padmasambhava flew to this spot on the back of a tigress in the eighth century. You'll break for lunch at the Taktshang Cafeteria about two thirds of the way up. Riding ponies can be arranged for most of the route if you wish.

In the afternoon you visit Drukgyel Dzong, the fort of the victorious Drukpas. Although gutted by a fire, this fort is renowned as the stand from which several Tibetan invasions were repulsed. You will also visit one of the oldest and most holy temples in Bhutan - the 7th century Kyichu Lhakhang. This was one of the 108 temples built in the Himalayas by the Tibetan King, Songtsen Gembo and embodies the arrival of Buddhism here.

In the evening you can have a final stroll through the streets of Paro, or enjoy a relaxing traditional hot stone bath to ease any tired limbs.

DAY 10

Fly to Kathmandu, Bhaktapur tour

Day 10 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner

After breakfast, you fly back to Kathmandu and visit the ancient centre of Bhaktapur. Formely a capital of the Kathmandu Valley, the pedestrianised centre of Bhaktapur is full of squares and temples, with some stunning wooden architecture. You have a guided tour here, as well as time to explore the bustling narrow and winding streets around the central squares.

After lunch we drive uphill to the village of Nagarkot on a ridge at the NE edge of the Kathmandu Valley. Accepted as probably the best of the valley's mountain views, you can see all the way from Kanchenjunga in the east, past the tiny (from here!) peak of Mt. Everest, to Dhaulgiri in the west. You can check the weather and the hotel will wake you if the morning is clear so you can see the sun rise over the distant Himalayas.

DAY 11

Valley walk, visit Pasupatinath & Boudhnath

Day 11 Breakfast

After an early rise to enjoy the sunrise views, you have breakfast before walking downhill from Nagarkot, striking off up through some pine forest and then following a ridge which brings you down through tiny Chhetri villages with wonderful views to either side, to the beautiful Changu Narayan Temple. You can now either drive back to Kathmandu, or carry on walking and descend to the valley floor and the Manohara River, which you leave to pass the old Gokarna Safari Park to reach Boudhnath with its huge Stupa and strings of colourful, fluttering prayer flags. The walk today can be made as long or short as you would like it.

Before returning to the hotel, you have a tour of Pashupatinath, the most important Hindu temple in Nepal. Although non-Hindus are not allowed inside the temple itself, you can see into the temple complex from the holy riverbanks where there are bathing and cremation ghats. You also visit the huge Buddhist Boudhnath stupa.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Nepal & Bhutan Explorer tour?
Nepal and Bhutan Explorer is a 12-day private tour combining two of Asia's most distinctive kingdoms. In Nepal you visit Kathmandu's Durbar Square, Swayambunath (the Monkey Temple), and the ancient city of Bhaktapur; then fly to Bhutan for Rinpung Dzong, Punakha Dzong at the confluence of two rivers, the mountain views at Dochu La Pass (3,050m), and the legendary Tiger's Nest Monastery perched 800m above Paro valley. The Bhutan visa, tourism development fee, and Druk Air flights are included. Available as a private tour with a maximum group of 12, it's a highly personal, expert-guided journey through two countries rarely combined.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Nepal and Bhutan?
Yes. The 12-day itinerary is sequenced to give you the essential experience of both countries without rushing. Nepal's Kathmandu valley is an excellent warm-up before the more remote Bhutan section. The private format means the pace can be adjusted to suit you. Most guests on this tour visit both countries for the first time.
What makes Bhutan different from other destinations?
Bhutan limits tourist numbers through its sustainable tourism policy, which requires all visitors to book through a licensed operator and pay a tourism development fee (included in this tour). The country measures Gross National Happiness rather than GDP, has no traffic lights in its capital Thimphu, and the landscape and monasteries feel genuinely untouched by mass tourism. The Tiger's Nest Monastery, clinging to a vertical rock face, is one of the most extraordinary sights in Asia.
What's the best time of year to do this tour?
March to May and September to November are the best windows for both Nepal and Bhutan. Spring brings rhododendrons blooming along the Bhutan mountain trails. Autumn has the clearest mountain views from Dochu La Pass. Winter visits to Bhutan are possible and offer a different beauty, but mountain passes can be affected by snow. Summer months bring monsoon rain to both countries.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
Bhutan's government-mandated tourism development fee is a significant part of the cost and is non-negotiable: it's built into how the country manages tourism sustainably. It's included in the price, along with the Bhutan visa, return Druk Air flights between Nepal and Bhutan, 11 nights in 3-4 star hotels, 11 breakfasts, 8 lunches, 8 dinners, and private guide and vehicle throughout. This is a genuinely all-inclusive private tour, not a budget itinerary.
What's actually included in the price?
Included: 11 nights accommodation in 3-4 star hotels, 11 breakfasts, 8 lunches, 8 dinners, Bhutan visa, Bhutan tourism development fee, Druk Air flights Nepal-Bhutan-Nepal, private English-speaking guide and driver throughout, air-conditioned minibus and 4x4 transport, and all listed entrance fees in both countries.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights to Kathmandu and from Kathmandu, Nepal visa (available on arrival), travel insurance, personal spending, and tips for your guide and driver are not included. Optional extras like the Everest Mountain Flight, Trisuli white-water rafting, and additional Kathmandu nights are your own cost.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. A deposit secures your booking and the balance is due 8 weeks before departure. The tour is priced on request given its private format; contact us for a personalised quote.
How physically demanding is this tour?
The Tiger's Nest hike in Bhutan is the most demanding element: a round trip of roughly 5-6 hours with significant altitude gain to the monastery at 3,120m. The walk is steep in places. Ponies are available for part of the ascent if needed. Dochu La Pass (3,050m) is a road viewpoint with a short walk. Kathmandu and Bhaktapur involve moderate walking on uneven surfaces. Good walking fitness is recommended.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
As a private tour, the pace is entirely adjusted to your needs. The Tiger's Nest hike can be done at a very gentle pace, and ponies are available for part of the route. Many travellers in their 60s and 70s complete the hike with no problem. What matters most is general fitness and willingness to take it steady.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The Tiger's Nest hike is not accessible for anyone with significant mobility limitations, even with a pony for the lower section. Bhaktapur involves cobblestones, and some Dzong visits include stone steps. If mobility is a concern, flag it when enquiring so we can advise honestly on which elements are manageable and which may need adjusting.
How do you handle altitude?
Dochu La Pass and Tiger's Nest are both above 3,000m. Mild symptoms at these altitudes (headache, breathlessness) are possible. The itinerary is designed with gradual acclimatisation in mind. Consult your GP about altitude medication before departure, particularly if you have a cardiovascular history.
Is Nepal and Bhutan safe to visit?
Both Nepal and Bhutan are among Asia's safest destinations. Nepal's tourist areas are very well-established. Bhutan's controlled tourism policy means it receives a carefully managed visitor flow; it is one of the most peaceful and low-crime countries in the world.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Both Nepal and Bhutan are comfortable and welcoming for solo female travellers. The private tour format means you always have a trusted guide with you, which provides additional reassurance.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide is your first point of contact. Kathmandu has several good private hospitals and the CIWEC Travel Medicine Centre. Bhutan has a functioning health system in Paro and Thimphu. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is compulsory.
Is the Druk Air flight into Bhutan safe?
The Paro airport approach is one of the most visually dramatic in the world, passing through mountain valleys at low altitude. It requires special certification for pilots. Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines are the two licensed operators; the route has an excellent safety record and the pilots flying it are specifically trained for these conditions.
What's the accommodation actually like?
All hotels are 3-4 star throughout both Nepal and Bhutan. Kathmandu stays include the Norbulinka Boutique Hotel (40 rooms, traditional Bhutanese-influenced design). In Bhutan, properties are typically traditional-style Bhutanese architecture with modern amenities. Bhutan's tourism regulations require visitors to stay in approved hotels, all of which meet a solid comfort standard.
What's staying in Bhutan like?
Bhutan's approved hotels blend traditional rammed-earth architecture with comfortable modern rooms. Wood-panelled interiors, woven textiles, and views of valley dzongs and pine forests make for a genuinely atmospheric stay. Don't expect global chain hotel polish, but expect warmth, character, and very attentive service.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Kathmandu hotels have reliable Wi-Fi. Bhutan has Wi-Fi in approved hotels but connectivity quality varies by location. In mountain areas it can be slow. A Nepal SIM card for data (used in the Kathmandu days) and a Bhutan SIM for the Bhutan section are available at their respective airports.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
Yes. As a private tour, accommodation upgrades to 5-star properties in Kathmandu and luxury lodges in Bhutan can be arranged. Speak to us when enquiring for a bespoke itinerary.
What kind of food will we eat?
Bhutanese cuisine is distinctive: ema datshi (chilli and cheese, the national dish), red rice, and yak-based dishes feature heavily. The 8 included lunches and dinners in Bhutan give you a good immersion in local food at approved restaurants. In Nepal, dal bhat, momos, and Newari feasts in Kathmandu are the highlights.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water in Nepal. In Bhutan, the water quality is generally high but sticking to bottled is still advisable for travellers. A reusable filter bottle reduces plastic.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. As a private tour you're not sharing with strangers, which suits solo travellers who prefer a personalised experience. You travel entirely with your own guide and vehicle.
Do I have to share a room?
No. Single travellers have their own room throughout. A single supplement applies; this is built into the private tour pricing.
What's the group size?
This is a private tour: minimum 1 traveller, maximum 12. You and whoever you're travelling with are the entire group. All decisions about pace, stops, and emphasis are yours.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
Yes, for families with older children who can handle full walking days including the Tiger's Nest hike. Bhutan is a fascinating destination for curious teenagers. For families with younger children, discuss specific ages and abilities with us at enquiry so we can advise honestly.
Do I need a visa for Nepal and Bhutan?
Nepal visa: available on arrival at Kathmandu airport. Bhutan visa: included in this tour; your operator arranges it and the approval is required before you travel. The Bhutan visa can only be obtained through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator, which is exactly what this booking covers.
What should I pack?
Warm layers for Dochu La Pass (3,050m) and Tiger's Nest evenings. Good walking shoes or boots for the Tiger's Nest hike. Modest clothing for dzong visits (knees and shoulders covered). Nepal uses Type C/D plugs at 230V; Bhutan uses Type D/F/G. Bring a universal adapter.
Are any vaccinations required?
Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid are recommended for Nepal. No additional specific vaccinations are required for Bhutan beyond what's recommended for Nepal. Consult your GP at least 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. Fly into Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM); all international connections are your own arrangement. The Druk Air flights between Nepal and Bhutan are included in the tour.
What about tipping?
Tipping is appreciated in Nepal and customary for guides and drivers. In Bhutan, your guide and driver tips are separate from the tourism development fee. Your guide will brief you on current recommended amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I do the Everest Mountain Flight?
Yes. An Everest Mountain Flight from Kathmandu is available as an optional extra. You fly in a small aircraft along the Himalayan chain for close-up views of Everest and the highest peaks. Weather dependent and morning departures are best.
Can I add Trisuli white-water rafting?
Yes. Trisuli River white-water rafting is available as an optional extra from Kathmandu. A half-day rafting trip on this classic Nepal river is a popular addition.
Can I add extra days in Kathmandu?
Yes. Extra nights in Kathmandu before or after the main tour can be arranged. There's more than enough to fill additional days: the Patan Museum, Nagarkot sunrise viewpoint, a day hike to Changu Narayan Temple, or a cooking class.
Can I add a Bardia National Park extension?
Yes. The Bardia National Park Extension (4 days) is available, adding a visit to one of Nepal's most remote and rewarding wildlife parks with Bengal tigers, greater one-horned rhinos, and elephants.
How far ahead should I book?
Book as early as possible, particularly for peak spring and autumn seasons. The Bhutan visa and tourism development fee process adds lead time. A few months ahead is the minimum; 6 months is more comfortable for specific date requirements.
How does booking work?
Contact us for a quote and confirmation of availability. A deposit secures your booking and the balance is due 8 weeks before departure. As a private tour, pricing is confirmed individually.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation and repatriation is compulsory. Ensure your policy covers trekking at altitude (Tiger's Nest is at 3,120m). World Nomads is a strong option for adventure travel.
What's your cancellation policy?
A sliding-scale cancellation policy applies with charges increasing the closer to departure you cancel. Full terms are in the booking conditions. UK-registered and protected by Trust My Travel.
What if my preferred dates don't work?
As a private tour, dates are flexible. Contact us to discuss your preferred window and we'll build the itinerary around your availability.

Encounters Travel, you did it again! We had an amazing and very memorable trip to Bhutan. It was very well organized. The tour company did a wonderful job. Our journey through Bhutan was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, the country's serene landscapes and deep-rooted culture wrapped us in a sense of peace and wonder. The hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) was a breathtaking hike and an even more spiritual reward at the top. The view was surreal, and the monastery seemed to float on the cliffside. The trip leaves you with a calmer heart, a clearer mind, and memories that feel timeless!

A quite unique and interesting visit to Nepal and Bhutan. Overall the trip was two weeks of peak experiences although arrival and departure at Kathmandu airport were quite chaotic. The guided visits to key sites in Kathmandu were very high quality and informative. But without doubt the highlight was a week in Bhutan. Our guide, Rinzin, personalised the visit in so many memorable ways. There was a lot of time on the bus but there is no other way of getting to visit the myriad of historic places

We used Encounters Travel as the organizer for our Dec 2019 Everest Base Camp Trek in Nepal. They handled everything from the flight booking to the airport shuttle to the guide/porter arrangements. Their planning was well organized which allowed us to focus solely on getting through the physical challenges of the trek.
We were booked on Qatar Air which was nice for our 30+ hours of traveling each way. The hotel they had booked for us in Kathmandu was clean and comfortable with a very nice staff (and great location). Lastly, the guide & porter for our trek were absolutely fantastic. Dipesh (our guide) was professional and took time each day to discuss how we were feeling and address any concerns or questions that we had. I honestly do not think we would have made it to Base Camp if not for the expertise of Dipesh.
Encounters Travel made this trek much less stressful than it could have been, and on a trek that is stressful & difficult by its very nature, that was a relief. I don't often book travel with a tour company, but I will likely be coming back to Encounters Travel in the future. HIGHLY recommended.

I have just returned from the Nepal on a Shoestring Tour and I can highly recommend it. A fantastic, non-stop way to be introduced to Nepal; Kathmandu, Chitwan and Pokhara in 8 days. I added on an additional day at the start which did mean I had some quiet time before the action began! Our guide, Dipesh, who escorted us for the trip entirety was brilliant and very patient with our relentless questions! The bus trips between locations were long but a fantastic way to see the Nepalese countryside, you do need to be patient with the Nepalese roadways! I loved every minute and would highly recommend Encounters Travel and this tour. Now looking at my next trip with Encounters Travel!

Wonderful time, great experience. The booking process was fairly simple (Bhutan is slightly more complex than other locations). The guide (Dago) and driver (Yeshee) were great, super friendly and accommodating. Dago was full of information and quite knowledgeable. Yeshee, was great, at times the roads were rough, but he was a great driver, very friendly and kept the truck spotless.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Accommodation

The accommodation on this tour is in comfortable mid-range tourist class hotels, mainly boutique style, and at the high end of the Nepalese 3-star level, and the Bhutanese 4-star level.

Like all aspects of tourism in Bhutan, hotels used for tourists are strictly regulated and inspected and all must reach a good standard to obtain their license to cater for tourists. So, you should expect good clean rooms, en-suite bathrooms, and some traditional Bhutanese styling in the building’s architecture and design.

Please check the Accommodation section on the tour page on our website for the hotels that we currently use most on this tour. These are given as a guide only and may be exchanged some dates for alternative properties of a similar standard. We will advise you of your first hotel in Kathmandu a few weeks before departure when we send out your final confirmation voucher and arrival instructions. We do not normally advise details of all the other hotels used throughout the tour. If you have specific requirements for individual hotels, please request a private/tailor-made tour.

Please check the Single Room Supplement option for details on room sharing options and charges for solo travellers on this tour.
