Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Cairo City Break tour?
This 4-day Cairo to Cairo city break is the fastest way to see Egypt's greatest hits without flying down to Luxor. In 3 full days you visit the Great Pyramids of Giza (including the 500-foot Pyramid of Khufu), the Sphinx, the 4,700-year-old Step Pyramid at Saqqara across a 7km stretch of temples and tombs, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) with the complete King Tutankhamun display, the Citadel, the Khan al-Khalili bazaar, and an evening Nile dinner cruise with Sufi and belly dancing. A professional Egyptologist guide is with you throughout and all site entrance fees are included. Groups are small (max 18) and the tour departs every Friday.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Egypt?
Yes. Cairo is a demanding first destination precisely because there is so much to see and the city is chaotic to navigate alone. Having an Egyptologist guide for every sightseeing day means you understand what you are looking at and lose no time to logistics. If this is your first trip to Egypt and you want to add more, this tour connects easily with our longer Egypt itineraries.
What is the difference between this and your other Egypt tours?
The Cairo City Break (4 days) concentrates entirely on Cairo and Giza and is ideal if you only have a long weekend or want to bolt Cairo onto another trip. Our longer Egypt tours go further: Discover Egypt (longer duration) adds Luxor, the Valley of the Kings and Upper Egypt. The Egyptian Legacy and Pharaonic Encounters tours cover the full Nile corridor from Cairo to Aswan. If Cairo is your only Egyptian stop, the city break is the right choice.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
The tour departs every Friday throughout the year, so it is truly year-round. The most comfortable months are October through April, when temperatures are mild (roughly 20-25 degrees C by day). May to September is hot, with July and August regularly exceeding 35 degrees C at Giza. The Pyramids are outdoors so midday heat in summer is significant. Autumn and spring are the most popular times.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, Cairo is a city where cheap DIY options exist. But factor in 3 nights in a 3 to 4-star hotel, a professional Egyptologist guide for all 3 sightseeing days, an AC private minibus, all site entrance fees, 24-hour airport transfers, 3 breakfasts and the included Nile dinner. Organising the same independently requires navigating Cairo traffic, queuing at ticket offices, and finding a guide of the same quality.
What is actually included in the price?
3 nights accommodation in a 3 to 4-star hotel, 3 breakfasts and 1 dinner, 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfers, a professional Egyptologist guide for all sightseeing tours, private AC vehicles for all road journeys, and services of the local representative team in Cairo.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, travel insurance, the Egyptian Tourist Visa, a tipping kitty (your guide will brief current amounts at the start of the tour), meals and drinks not listed in the itinerary, and site entrance fees. Your guide will advise on expected entrance fee amounts before each day's visits.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve your place online with a deposit, hold a reservation and pay later, or pay in full. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Light to moderate. The Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza involve walking on sand and uneven stone, with some inclines. The Step Pyramid complex at Saqqara is similarly open desert with some walking. The Grand Egyptian Museum and the Citadel involve considerable walking on hard floors. The Nile dinner cruise is entirely seated. Comfortable walking shoes with grip are more important than physical fitness.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
The itinerary is very accessible for older travellers. The pace is guided, transport is private, and there are no stairs or altitude challenges. Saqqara and Giza involve walking on sand and uneven ground, so supportive footwear is key.
What if I have mobility issues?
The Pyramids site and Saqqara are on uneven desert terrain. The interior of any pyramid you enter (if optional tickets are available) involves narrow, low passages. If you use a wheelchair or have significant mobility limitations, the outdoor sites at Giza and Saqqara are partially accessible at ground level. Contact us to discuss specifics before booking.
Is Egypt safe to visit right now?
Cairo is visited by millions of tourists each year. The Giza plateau, the GEM, the Khan al-Khalili and the Nile cruise circuit are well-established, professionally managed tourist areas. Your Egyptologist guide and the permanent local representative team are on hand throughout. Check current government travel advisories before departure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Female solo travellers are a regular presence on these tours. Street harassment can occur in Cairo, particularly around tourist markets, and dressing modestly (covered shoulders and legs) reduces unwanted attention. With a professional guide by your side for all sightseeing days, the experience is much more comfortable.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
The local representative team in Cairo is available 24 hours and can arrange medical assistance. Cairo has good private hospitals. You must carry comprehensive travel insurance with medical cover.
Will I be hassled by vendors and touts?
Around the Pyramids and at the Khan al-Khalili bazaar, vendor and camel-ride touting is persistent. A polite but firm no works best. Your Egyptologist guide navigates these areas daily and will help you avoid the most pressured spots.
What is the accommodation actually like?
You stay in a 3 to 4-star hotel in Cairo for 3 nights. Hotels at this level in Cairo offer en-suite rooms with air-conditioning and breakfast included. Specific hotels can vary. Extra nights before the tour (3-star) or after the tour (4-star) are available as add-ons.
What is the Nile dinner cruise like?
The Nile dinner cruise on the evening of Day 3 is a set-meal dinner on board a boat cruising gently along the Nile through central Cairo. Entertainment includes traditional Sufi whirling dancers and belly dancing. It is a festive, slightly theatrical evening that is genuinely fun.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Yes. 3 to 4-star hotels in Cairo have Wi-Fi. The cruise boat may have limited connectivity.
Can I upgrade or add extra nights?
Yes. Extra nights in Cairo before the tour (3-star hotel) or after the tour (4-star hotel) are available as add-ons, along with further optional day trips such as Alexandria or the Valley of the Whales.
What kind of food will we eat?
Egyptian cuisine is hearty and varied. Breakfast at the hotel typically includes a mix of local and international options. The included Nile dinner on Day 3 serves Egyptian and international dishes on board the cruise. Around Cairo you will find kushari (Egypt's comfort-food staple of lentils, pasta and rice), ful medames, ta'ameya (Egyptian falafel), grilled meats, and plenty of fresh bread. The Khan al-Khalili area has good local street food options.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Do not drink tap water in Egypt. Stick to bottled water at all times, including when brushing teeth. Hotels provide bottled water. A Water-to-Go filter bottle is a sustainable alternative (use code ENCOUNTERS25 for a discount).
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The small group (max 18) format means you quickly meet other travellers. Solo travellers are a regular part of these Friday departures.
Do I have to share a room?
Rooms are based on twin sharing. A single supplement is available if you prefer your own room.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Minimum 2, maximum 18. The Friday departure format attracts a mixed international crowd including couples, solo travellers and small groups of friends.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures on any date are available. As a private booking you can also customise extra days and optional extensions.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
Yes. Children find the Pyramids, Sphinx, and the King Tutankhamun treasures at the Grand Egyptian Museum genuinely exciting. There is no stated minimum age. The pace is guided and manageable for families.
Do I need a visa for Egypt?
Yes. An Egyptian Tourist Visa is required and is not included in the tour price. Many nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Cairo International Airport or apply for an e-Visa online in advance. Check current requirements on the official Egypt e-Visa portal.
What should I pack?
Light, breathable clothing for warm weather. Modest dress (covered shoulders and knees) for mosque visits and the Khan al-Khalili area. Comfortable walking shoes with grip for the Pyramids and Saqqara desert terrain. A hat and sunscreen for outdoor sites. Egypt uses Type C/F plugs at 220V.
Are any vaccinations required?
No specific vaccinations are legally required for Egypt, but Hepatitis A is generally recommended. Consult your GP or a travel clinic for current advice.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. You fly into Cairo International Airport. We include 24-hour arrival and departure airport transfers.
What about tipping?
A tipping kitty is not included in the price. Your guide will brief you on expected amounts at the start of the tour, covering guide, driver, and any site-specific tipping customs.
Can I add extra nights in Cairo?
Yes. Extra nights in Cairo before the tour (3-star hotel) or after the tour (4-star hotel) are available. Extra days can include a trip to Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast, or a visit to the Valley of the Whales (Wadi Al-Hitan) in the Western Desert.
Can I climb inside one of the Pyramids?
Limited tickets to enter the interior of one of the Giza pyramids are available. Your Egyptologist guide will advise on ticket availability on the day. It cannot be guaranteed.
Can I take a camel ride at Giza?
Yes. Camel rides are available at the Giza plateau as a local extra. Your guide can assist. Note this is arranged locally and not part of the included itinerary.
How far ahead should I book?
The tour runs every Friday, so dates are plentiful. Peak tourist season (October through April) fills fastest, particularly around school holidays and winter travel windows. Booking 4-8 weeks ahead is usually sufficient, though earlier is safer for peak periods.
How does booking work?
Complete the online reservation form on the tour's Dates & Prices page. You can pay a deposit, hold a reservation, or pay in full. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure. You receive instant confirmation by email.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. It must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation. World Nomads is our recommended provider.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding-scale cancellation fee applies. Full terms are in the booking conditions on our website. We are UK-registered and financial protection is provided through our partnership with Trust My Travel.
What if my preferred dates are sold out?
The tour departs every Friday so a nearby date is almost always available. Contact us if you want a private departure on a specific date.

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

From the time we landed in Cairo we were treated as VIP’s. Nadine our Tour leader kept on checking on us throughout the journey. We were fortunate to have Fayed and Hossam as the tour guides, they took their time to explain the sites throughout each excursion. Everyone made us feel safe and well looked after.

Wonderful time with friends. The land of Egypt is hard to describe in a few words. The history is so immense I will need to come back again and again. The accommodations were above par and the people from Encounters Travel are very helpful. I would your with them again.

Encounters travel worked with me to devise a specific itinerary to meet my interests, and its agents and guides in Egypt delivered beautifully while I was in Egypt. I was with a group for most of the trip, but per my request, they set up individual excursions for me on two additional days. Their agents in Cairo and Egypt were particularly good. I had to go to a medical clinic in Luxor unexpectedly, and the Encounters liaison handled it so quickly and easily that it didn't effect my itinerary at all.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Transport

Our trips feature a mix of different transport options. We want you to feel like you’re really experiencing the country you’re travelling through, but at the same time we want you to finish journeys refreshed enough to enjoy the next stage of the tour. As this is a simple city break tour, all vehicles used are private air-conditioned minivans or minibuses, subject to the final group size.
