Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Discover Turkey tour?
Discover Turkey is an 8-day small-group tour from Istanbul to Istanbul, designed for travellers who want to tick off Turkey's greatest highlights without spending three weeks in the country. In just over a week you cover Ephesus, Pamukkale's cotton-white terraces, a cave hotel in Cappadocia, and the bazaars and Bosphorus of Istanbul, all with a maximum of 20 people and a tipping kitty included so there are no awkward daily tip negotiations.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Turkey?
Absolutely, it's one of the best introductions to the country available at this length. The 8-day format hits the sites most visitors come to Turkey for, from the Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace in Istanbul to the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia, without rushing. Your guide handles everything, so you can arrive knowing very little and leave feeling like you understand the country.
What's the difference between this and your other Turkey tours?
Discover Turkey at 8 days is our shortest Turkey group tour, ideal for those with limited time. Taste of Turkey is also 8 days but with a different routing. Anatolian Adventure at 10 days adds extra cultural depth. Best of Turkey at 11 days extends the itinerary further. Turkey Encounters at 17 days is the comprehensive option covering the Black Sea coast and eastern regions. The ANZAC 11-day Tour adds Gallipoli and a Dawn Service for those with that connection.
What's the best time of year to do this tour?
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are the sweet spots: warm temperatures, manageable crowds at the major sites, and comfortable conditions for walking. July and August are peak season with higher temperatures, particularly in Cappadocia and Pamukkale. November to March is quieter with cooler conditions, and balloon flights in Cappadocia can be weather-dependent in winter.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Turkey packages. What you're paying for is 7 nights in 4-star and boutique hotels including the Gamirasu Cave Hotel in Cappadocia and the Port Bosphorus Hotel in Istanbul, 5 dinners and 7 breakfasts, a tipping kitty already included in the tour price, a domestic flight from Istanbul to Izmir, and professional guiding throughout with a maximum of 20 people.
What's actually included in the price?
Included: 7 nights in 4-star and boutique hotels; domestic flight Istanbul to Izmir; 7 breakfasts and 5 dinners; tipping kitty; all transport in AC vehicles; professional English-speaking guide; 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfers; all sightseeing tours as listed in the itinerary.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, visa fees (e-Visa required for most nationalities), travel insurance, lunches, drinks, entrance fees to some sites, personal expenses. Your guide will brief you on current entrance fees and any local payments at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve your place with a deposit, hold a reservation while you arrange flights, or pay in full. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Easy to moderate. This is a sightseeing tour rather than an active adventure. You'll walk at Ephesus (extensive ruins covering considerable ground), climb the hillside at Pamukkale to the travertine terraces, and do some walking in Cappadocia. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. None of the days involve strenuous physical activity.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
Discover Turkey is very well suited to older travellers. The pace is comfortable, the hotels are 4-star, and the sightseeing involves manageable walking. There are no altitude concerns, strenuous hikes, or demanding physical activities. Many of our most enthusiastic Turkey travellers are in their 60s and 70s.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
Ephesus involves walking over uneven ancient stone surfaces and some inclines. Pamukkale's travertine terraces require bare feet on slippery calcium formations. The bazaars and alleyways of Istanbul involve cobblestones. If you use a wheelchair or have significant mobility limitations, contact us before booking so we can advise on what's manageable and what alternatives might suit you.
Is Turkey safe to visit right now?
Turkey is a major international tourism destination visited by millions each year, and the tourist areas covered on this tour, Istanbul, Kusadasi, Pamukkale, and Cappadocia, are well-established and generally safe. As always, check the current UK Foreign Office or your government's official travel advice before departure and follow any updates during your trip.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Turkey's main tourist areas are well-frequented by solo female travellers. The small-group format means you're always with a guide and fellow travellers during activities. Normal city awareness applies in bazaar areas, particularly in Istanbul. Your guide will give country-specific advice at the start of the tour.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide can assist with finding medical care. Turkey has good hospitals in Istanbul and in the main tourist towns. Travel insurance with medical cover is compulsory on all our tours. Keep your policy details accessible.
Will I be hassled by vendors and touts?
Istanbul's Grand Bazaar and the tourist areas around Ephesus do have persistent vendors. It's part of the Turkey experience and most travellers quickly learn to navigate it with good humour. Your guide will brief you on how to handle approaches without offence.
What's the accommodation actually like?
You stay in good 4-star and boutique properties throughout. In Istanbul the Port Bosphorus Hotel puts you in a strong central location. In Kusadasi (for Ephesus) you're at the Ilayda Avantgarde Hotel with views over the Aegean. In Pamukkale the Adempira Hotel is well-positioned for the terraces. The highlight is the Gamirasu Cave Hotel in Cappadocia, a boutique cave property carved into volcanic tufa, one of the most distinctive hotels in Turkey.
What's the cave hotel in Cappadocia like?
The Gamirasu Cave Hotel is a boutique property carved into the volcanic rock of a historical Byzantine monastery in Cappadocia. Rooms are in authentic cave chambers with modern plumbing, heated floors in some rooms, and characterful stone walls. It's completely different from a standard hotel and one of the most memorable stays of the tour.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
All hotels on this tour have Wi-Fi. Connectivity is generally reliable in Istanbul, Kusadasi, Pamukkale, and Cappadocia.
Can I upgrade?
The existing hotels are already 4-star and boutique quality. If you want a higher level of accommodation at any stop, contact us before booking to discuss what's available as a private or tailor-made arrangement.
What kind of food will we eat?
Turkish cuisine is excellent and you'll eat very well. Expect mezes (shared starters), grilled meats and fish, fresh bread, baklava, and regional specialities. The five dinners are taken at good local restaurants. In Cappadocia and Istanbul there are cooking class options if you want to go deeper into the food culture.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water in Turkey is treated but most travellers and locals prefer bottled water. Bottled water is cheap and widely available. A Water-to-Go filter bottle is a good way to reduce plastic waste on the tour.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. Maximum 20 people, and solo travellers make up a significant portion of bookings. The mix of sightseeing, meal stops, and transport time creates natural opportunities to get to know fellow travellers.
Do I have to share a room?
The tour is priced on twin-share. A single supplement is available if you prefer your own room. Contact us at booking to add this.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Maximum 20 people. The demographic mix is typically broad: solo travellers, couples, and small groups of friends, usually ranging from late 20s to 70s. ANZAC Day departures can be larger, up to 45 people, and are noted on the booking calendar.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Most of our group itineraries can be run as private departures, allowing itinerary customisation. Contact us to discuss private options and dates.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The source material does not specify a minimum age for Discover Turkey. The sightseeing format, 4-star hotels, and lack of strenuous activity make it potentially suitable for older children. Contact us to discuss suitability for specific ages before booking.
Do I need a visa for Turkey?
Most nationalities require a Turkish e-Visa, which is quick and straightforward to obtain online before departure. Check current requirements and fees on the official Turkish e-Visa government website (evisa.gov.tr) for your specific nationality well before travel.
What should I pack?
Comfortable walking shoes are essential for Ephesus and the bazaars. Dress modestly for mosque visits: women need a headscarf and covered shoulders and legs (scarves are available at mosque entrances). Turkey uses Type C/F sockets at 220V. A light jacket for Cappadocia evenings, which can be cool even in summer. Sunscreen for open sites like Pamukkale and Ephesus.
Are any vaccinations required?
No vaccinations are officially required for Turkey. Commonly recommended vaccines include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, and Diphtheria. Consult your doctor or a travel health clinic for personalised advice before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. International flights to Istanbul (IST) are not included and you book these independently. We include a 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfer in Istanbul. We are happy to suggest flights if you contact us.
What about tipping?
A tipping kitty is included in the tour price on Discover Turkey, which covers tips for your guide, driver, and hotel staff throughout the tour. This is one of the things that makes the pricing transparent: no unexpected requests for cash at the end of each day.
Can I take a cooking class?
Cooking class options in Istanbul, Kusadasi, and Cappadocia are available as pre-bookable extras. They're a popular add-on for food-lovers. Contact us to include one when you book.
Can I upgrade the Kayseri flight?
Yes. A domestic flight from Istanbul to Kayseri (Cappadocia's nearest airport) is available as an upgrade option instead of the overland journey. This is a popular option for those who want more time in Cappadocia or prefer to avoid the long drive.
Can I add extra nights in Istanbul?
Yes. Extra nights in Istanbul are available as a pre-bookable option, staying at the Port Bosphorus Hotel or a similar property. Istanbul easily fills several extra days with its mosques, palaces, Bosphorus cruises, and food scene.
Can I combine this with a longer Turkey tour?
If 8 days leaves you wanting more, the Anatolian Adventure (10 days), Best of Turkey (11 days), and Turkey Encounters (17 days) all offer extended itineraries. Contact us to discuss connecting tours or combining tours into a custom itinerary.
How far ahead should I book?
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) departures fill quickly. Booking 3-6 months in advance is recommended for those peak periods. ANZAC Day departures should be booked as early as possible due to very high demand.
How does booking work?
Complete the online reservation form on the Discover Turkey tour page. Pay a deposit, make full payment, or hold a reservation. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure. You'll receive booking confirmation and detailed pre-departure information.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Travel insurance is compulsory on all our tours. Cover must include medical expenses and emergency repatriation. World Nomads is a good option for active travellers. Provide your insurance details before departure.
What's your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale of cancellation charges applies depending on how far ahead you cancel. Full terms are in our booking conditions. We are UK-registered and protected via Trust My Travel's insurance scheme for financial security.
What if my dates are already sold out?
Contact us to check waitlist availability, or ask about a private departure on alternative dates. Related alternatives include the Taste of Turkey (8 days, different routing), Anatolian Adventure (10 days), or Best of Turkey (11 days).

My partner and I recently had a two-week holiday in Turkey, organised through Encounters Travel. We wanted something tailored to our interests and availability, and Gavin at Encounters created a bespoke version of an existing tour for us. As we worked out what this tour might involve, it necessitated quite a few questions and answers going back and forth, as we refined our plans. Each time Gavin was very prompt to respond, did so in full, and very courteously. Encounters Travel liaised with all of the local agents and catered for everything we had asked for. We ended up having an absolutely fantastic (and wholly unforgettable) holiday, seeing sights that we would never have been able to fit in if we were trying to do it completely by ourselves. On the evidence of this trip, we would very strongly recommend them to others looking for an agent who'll help to take some of the hard work out of planning a holiday.

I bought a ticket thru living social at 3am when I couldn’t sleep and then said to myself “What did I just do?!” turns out what I did was make one of the BEST DECISIONS OF MY LIFE!!! The travel agency was easy to work with and always available via telephone (UK HOURS) I traveled alone for an additional few of 200 or something but they found me a roommate and I elected to take the roomie and get a refund on solo fee (another great decision..roomie was from Vegas and a great guy) I traveled from LA to Turkey and then to Cairo the planes were nice and roomie. They fed ya so much I was stuffed by the time I got to Turkey (tip: TURKEY AIRPORT SUCKS! It’s HUGE,all the gates are far apart and you are only guided by arrows and no one helps you,so move Swift if you have to meet a connecting flight) upon arrival to Cairo I was met by a sharply dressed man with a sign that greeted me in the traditional Muslim greeting and we were immediately friends! He walked me to get my visa ($20 American dollars cash) through customs and it was a breeze...with a guide it’s SPEEDY. We were met by a air condition car (IT WAS HOT) they took me to a hotel across the street from the pyramids and he checked me in. (Tip: Security is HIGH everywhere and you will be searched by security at all times entering and leaving.. you will never feel unsafe. Plan on seeing guards with machine guns in the street and hotels..you will grow accustomed to it) I was there for 10 days and EACH DAY GOT BETTER!! The food, hotels, monuments, experience and PRICE CANNOT BE BEAT!! I crawled inside of the Great Pyramid of Cheops, seen the Sphinx, slept overnight on a felucca on the Nile, took a sleeper train to Aswan, went to a Nubian Village for a traditional dinner, snorkeled in the Red Sea, toured the Cairo Museum,Sunrise Hot Air Ballon ride over the Valley of the Kings, stayed at a luxury all inclusive Sea Side resort in Hurghada, drove thru the Sahara Desert to monuments and witnessed the sunrise, toured downtown Cairo market, visited the Synagogue that Moses worshipped and the well he drank from, and so many things in between and I did it all for UNDER $1550 US dollars. No guess work, this company TAKES CARE OF EVERYTHING!! Our tour guide “Big Mo” was one of the most passionate and insightful people I have ever met. His expertise of Egyptian history and the culture of his people is undeniable. He even went water sliding with me in Hurghada!! I cannot express how fortunate U feel to have had this experience in my lifetime. I was humbled by the people and inspired to see people with my likeness etched in massive stone and in the walls of the monuments and tombs. I met some of the most beautiful people inside and out in this country. They LOVE AMERICANS and they desperately need your tourism. I cannot say enough about this package that Encounters Travel has put together. All vehicles, hotels, restaurants and amenities they took us to were clean and safe. They include some meals the guides can be trusted. Be sure to give them the best tip you can at the end of the tour in AMERICAN MONEY....they will have earned it!! Now the bad....but you can’t escape these; IT’S HOT...no matter when you go (it’s Africa for goodness sake!) you will sweat all the time..so bring something to wipe your face like a few dark hand towels for daily use, hand sanitizer AND A HAND FAN...trust me some air is better then NONE and you can shield your face when the guides talk to you out in the sun but I recommend a fold away umbrella too TRUST ME!!! Only other thing is the street merchants..the first two days you are sympathetic to the plight after that you just instantly become a rude American and ignore them lol. They will try to pressure you, place things in your arm (I opened my arm and let them drop), give you a “free gift” (be warned NOTHING in Egypt is free) and try to pull you away from the group, always consult your guide they will help you steer clear and will help you to not get cheated. Last but MOST IMPORTANTLY when in the monuments, temples and other places NEVER LET A FRIENDLY PERSON HAVE YOU CAMERA TO TAKE PICS OF YOU...they will demand money and try to intimidate you and tell you they work for the Govt and wait for you at the gates if you don’t give them what you want. Just be polite and keep saying “no thank you while walking away” when you get close to your guide they will get the hint and leave you alone. Other than that..go have the TIME OF YOUR LIFE IN EGYPT!!! You will NEVER REGRET IT!

What a GREAT experience! I was a solo traveler and a bit worried but everyone at the office staff answered all my questions promptly assuring me I'd be in an English speaking group. I even missed my initial flight Nd Travel Encounters was able to coordinate my new transfer pick up time in Istanbul. The tour itself was also simply amazing, especially if you like History! Great sites with plenty to do, great itinerary including Troy, Galipoli, Blue Mosque, Haggai Sophia, Ephesus, Artemis, Kayakoy, etc. had a great/same guide and driver for the duration of he trip and all 4 star hotels. Nicely arranged trip, at a nice price. :)

I can really recommend to book a trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL. Stumbled across them by accident when i was searching the net for best prices. Being from South Africa with the weak ZAR they came out tops. Booked the 10 day Anatolian Adventure. All entrance fees was included. Thanks to Mariska for always getting back to me immediately. The tour surpassed my expectations and the accommodation provided was mostly 5 star. The tour guide Ilker (from Fez Travel) was amazing. He was very informative and not forgetting our good driver Irfaan. We had a small group of 10. Overall, a great trip. Worth every penny. Will definitely book my next trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. ANZAC Day Departures

ANZAC Day means many different things to different people. To some it is a true memorial service to pay respects to and remember family members or countrymen who lost their lives defending their homeland in World War I, while to others it symbolises a sense of community or belonging to the New Zealand and Australian way of life. For non Anzac nationals it remains a moving and important ceremonial day that brings thoughts of the sacrifices that previous generations have made for us, wherever we may come from.

Whichever may apply to you, this is a very special event that brings together many thousands of people every year on the shores of the Gallipoli peninsular on the western coast of Turkey.

We run special ANZAC day departures on all of our Turkey tours. The standard itineraries for each tour are adjusted slightly on these departures to coincide with the memorial services and to make the most of your time at Gallipoli. These special departures are indicated on the dates & prices table for each tour. Due to demand, group sizes on these dates may increase to a maximum of 45.

All of our ANZAC departures arrive at Gallipoli Cove early in the afternoon on the 24th giving us enough time to visit the museum and secure space for our groups. We then spend the night outdoors at the Cove waiting for the evocative dawn service to start. Afterwards, depending on the makeup of our group, the Australians will head to Lone Pine and the New Zealanders to Chunuk Bair for their country’s individual memorial service. Rest assured though that these special departures are not just about the ANZAC service. They all have their standard itineraries built around the service so you will still get to experience the history, culture and amazing sites that Turkey has to offer.
