The following tours run alongside this trip with slight adjustments in the itinerary and accommodation...

  • Discover Egypt - changes the flight from Cairo to Aswan to the sleeper train, and changes the Nile Cruise to an overnight felucca sailboat trip outside of Aswan
  • Nubian Adventure - adds an extra night in Luxor and then returns to Cairo to make a 9-day tour instead of heading to the Red Sea at Hurghada

Hotel Gala Dinners
Many of Egypt's hotels and Nile cruise boats arrange a very special gala dinner with entertainment in the evening on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Payment for these is often optional on Christmas Eve (24 Dec) but normally compulsory on New Year's Eve (31 Dec), whether you attend or not. Prices can range from around US$50 to over US$180 per person in 5-star hotels. Final decisions on prices and whether dinners are compulsory are made relatively close to the time. We aim to always select hotels that make their Gala Dinners optional, though this is not always possible, especially for New Year's Eve. Gala dinner prices are therefore not included in our prices above, but will be added to your booking if they become required. Please budget accordingly. More information is available on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Gods of Egypt tour?
Gods of Egypt is a 10-day, Cairo-to-Cairo journey that takes you from the Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza to the Valley of the Kings in Luxor and back, all in serious style. You fly from Cairo to Aswan rather than taking an overnight train, spend three nights on a 5-star-deluxe Nile cruise boat, stay in 5-star hotels throughout, and finish with two days at a Red Sea resort in Hurghada on soft all-inclusive. Groups are capped at 18 and all sightseeing is led by a local Egyptologist guide. If you want Egypt's greatest hits with genuine comfort at every stop, this is the tour.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Egypt?
Absolutely. The itinerary covers all the headline sights (Pyramids, Sphinx, Grand Egyptian Museum, Valley of the Kings, Karnak, Philae Temple, Kom Ombo, Edfu) in a logical Nile Valley sequence. An Egyptologist guide with you throughout means you arrive understanding the context of what you are looking at, not just taking photos. The Red Sea days at Hurghada give you a breather before the flight home.
What is the difference between this and your other Egypt tours?
Gods of Egypt is the premium small group option: 5-star hotels throughout, domestic flight Cairo to Aswan (no overnight train), and three nights on a 5-star-deluxe cruise boat. The Discover Egypt tour replaces the flight with a sleeper train and swaps the Nile cruise for a felucca sailboat trip, making it a more adventurous, lower-budget experience. The Nubian Adventure extends the Luxor time and returns to Cairo without the Red Sea leg. Ancient Encounters adds an 8-day Jordan itinerary at the start, making it a 17-day combined tour.
What is the best time of year to do the Gods of Egypt tour?
The tour runs on Saturday departures throughout the year. October to April is the most comfortable time to visit: temperatures between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius in the Nile Valley. May to September is hot (above 35 degrees Celsius in Luxor and Aswan), though the air-conditioned vehicles and 5-star hotels make it manageable. The Red Sea at Hurghada is warm year-round. Winter departures between December and February occasionally coincide with Gala Dinner requirements on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve, which carry an additional charge.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Egypt tours. What you are paying for here is a domestic flight from Cairo to Aswan (bypassing a long overnight train), 6 nights in Egyptian 5-star hotels with pools and multiple restaurants, 3 nights on a 5-star-deluxe Nile cruise boat, a local Egyptologist guide for every sightseeing day, all transport in private air-conditioned vehicles, included sightseeing at the Pyramids and Sphinx, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Koshary lunch, Nubian Village Experience, Red Sea resort on soft all-inclusive, and all transfers. This is the full-comfort version of Egypt.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 6 nights in 5-star hotels; 3 nights on a 5-star-deluxe Nile cruise boat; all private AC transport and transfers; domestic flight Cairo to Aswan; 24-hour airport meet-and-assist service in Cairo; Egyptologist guide for all sightseeing; Traditional Koshary Lunch in Cairo; Nubian Village Experience in Aswan; Red Sea relaxation at Hurghada (soft all-inclusive: meals, soft drinks and snacks); private guiding on the Nile cruise; and meals as detailed in the itinerary (9 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 5 dinners).
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights; Egypt visa fee (available on arrival for most nationalities, check current rates on the Egyptian e-Visa portal); travel insurance; entrance fees to sites (a budget figure is given on the tour notes, payable in USD cash); tipping kitty (your guide will brief current amounts at the start of the tour, payable in USD cash); meals not listed in the itinerary; drinks and alcoholic beverages; tour guide tips; and hotel Gala Dinner charges if your dates fall on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit to secure your place and the balance is due eight weeks before departure. A reserve-now-pay-later option is also available at checkout.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Easy to moderate. You will do significant walking at archaeological sites, particularly the Pyramids complex, Valley of the Kings (which involves uneven paths and steps leading into tombs), and the Karnak Temple complex. The Nile cruise and Red Sea days are entirely relaxing. A reasonable level of general fitness is all that is required.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
This tour is very well suited to mature travellers. The 5-star accommodation is comfortable, the pace is not rushed, and there are no strenuous activities. The heat is the main consideration: the Valley of the Kings and Karnak Temple are fully exposed to the sun. Wear a hat, carry water, and avoid midday activity in summer months.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
Most sites involve walking on uneven or sandy ground and stone steps into tombs in the Valley of the Kings. Golf carts are available at some sites for a local fee. The Nile cruise boat involves steps between decks and boarding from a dock which can require stepping across other boats moored alongside. If you have significant mobility limitations, contact us to discuss which elements of the itinerary can be adapted.
How hot does it actually get?
In the Nile Valley, temperatures in summer (May to September) regularly exceed 35 degrees Celsius in Luxor and Aswan, with some days above 40 degrees Celsius. In winter (December to February), daytime temperatures are a comfortable 20-25 degrees Celsius in Cairo, dropping to around 10 degrees Celsius at night. The Red Sea in Hurghada is warm year-round. The tour vehicles and hotels are fully air-conditioned throughout.
Is Egypt safe to visit right now?
Egypt is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world and millions of international visitors travel safely every year. The sites covered on this tour (Cairo, Nile Valley, Red Sea) are heavily protected and well set up for tourism. Normal urban precautions apply in Cairo's markets and bazaars. Check the UK Foreign Office or US State Department travel advice before departure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Egypt is visited by large numbers of solo female travellers. Some persistent attention from vendors and touts can occur at tourist sites, but travelling with an Egyptologist guide significantly reduces this. Modest dress (loose clothing, shoulders covered, avoid shorts in central Cairo and at mosques) is the most effective way to avoid unwanted attention.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Private hospitals and clinics are available in Cairo, Luxor and Hurghada. Your guide and local rep will direct you to the nearest appropriate medical facility. Travel insurance covering medical treatment and repatriation is compulsory. Stomach upsets are the most common issue: carry rehydration salts and avoid tap water.
Will I be hassled by vendors and touts?
Persistent touting occurs at most major tourist sites in Egypt, including the Pyramids and the Nile Valley temples. Your Egyptologist guide navigates the most intense areas with you and a firm, polite 'no' while continuing to walk is the most effective response. It is noticeably less persistent once you are inside the main protected site areas.
What is the accommodation actually like?
You stay in Egyptian 5-star hotels throughout: properties with swimming pools, multiple restaurants, bars, and air-conditioned en-suite rooms. In Cairo the tour uses a centrally located 5-star hotel. In Aswan and Luxor you stay in Nile-side 5-star properties. The Nile cruise boat is rated at 5-star-deluxe level (broadly equivalent to a solid international 4-star hotel standard). In Hurghada you are based at a 5-star Red Sea resort on soft all-inclusive.
What is the Nile cruise boat like?
The 5-star-deluxe cruise boat has air-conditioned en-suite cabins with Nile views, a sun deck, restaurant serving full-board meals, and an onboard bar. Boats may moor alongside other vessels at night, which means you occasionally need to cross through other boats to reach the shore. Itineraries are subject to minor adjustments based on local river conditions.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
The 5-star hotels all have Wi-Fi. Connectivity on the Nile cruise boat is more variable and can be limited between ports. The Hurghada resort has Wi-Fi throughout. A local Egyptian SIM card is inexpensive and useful for connectivity during land sections.
Can I upgrade?
The Gods of Egypt tour already uses the highest standard on our Egypt programme (5-star hotels, 5-star-deluxe cruise boat). Upgrades to a private Egyptologist guide on the Nile cruise section are available on request. The drive from Hurghada back to Cairo can also be upgraded to a domestic flight for additional comfort. Contact us before booking to discuss options.
What kind of food will we eat?
Egyptian cuisine is excellent and varied. The included Koshary lunch in Cairo (a layered mix of rice, lentils, macaroni, chickpeas, tomato sauce and crispy onions) is a real highlight. On the Nile cruise boat, full-board meals are served in the onboard restaurant and typically include mezze starters, grilled meats and fish, and fresh local vegetables. The Hurghada resort is soft all-inclusive, with multiple restaurants. Egyptian breakfasts include ful medames (spiced fava beans), eggs, fresh flatbread and cheeses.
Can you cater for vegetarian vegan or gluten-free diets?
Vegetarian options are available throughout: Koshary is vegetarian, mezze spreads are largely plant-based, and Egyptian cuisine has a strong tradition of vegetable dishes. Vegan is straightforward in most contexts. Gluten-free requires more care on the cruise boat where bread accompanies most meals, but rice and vegetable dishes are always available. Inform us at booking and your guide will communicate your needs to the cruise crew and hotel restaurants.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water is not safe to drink in Egypt. Use sealed bottled water throughout. Hotels and the cruise boat provide bottled water, though this generates considerable plastic waste. Bringing a Water-to-Go filtered water bottle is recommended for use in contexts where refilling from treated sources is possible.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The group is capped at 18 and the combination of guided sightseeing and shared meals creates a sociable atmosphere from day one. Single supplements are available for solo travellers who want a private room. Solo travellers who are happy to share will be matched with a same-gender room partner.
Do I have to share a room?
Accommodation is based on twin or double rooms. Single supplements are available throughout the hotel and cruise boat sections. Triple cabins are not available on the Nile cruise boat.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups run with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 18 travellers. This is a private-vehicle, guided tour with a dedicated Egyptologist for all sightseeing, so it is a genuinely small-group experience. The demographic is typically a mix of solo travellers, couples and small groups, ranging broadly in age.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The Gods of Egypt tour is available as a private departure on any date. Private bookings allow you to select specific hotels, upgrade the Nile cruise boat to a dahabiya (traditional sailing vessel), or add extensions. Contact us for a tailor-made quote.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
Yes, children can join this tour and children under 12 are exempt from the tipping kitty. The Pyramids, Sphinx and Nile cruise are all engaging for children. The Valley of the Kings tombs and the Red Sea swimming are particularly popular. For group departures, please check the specific needs of your children with us before booking.
Do I need a visa for Egypt?
Most nationalities can obtain an Egypt tourist visa on arrival at Cairo International Airport or Sphinx International Airport. Check current fees on the official Egypt e-Visa portal before departure, as they are subject to change. Our representative at the airport assists with visa formalities on arrival.
What should I pack?
Comfortable walking shoes are essential for uneven archaeological sites. Modest dress is important: loose-fitting clothing that covers shoulders and avoids bare flesh at mosques and in central Cairo. A light layer for cool evenings and air-conditioned spaces. Swimwear for the Red Sea. Sunhat, sunscreen and sunglasses are critical. Egypt uses Type C and F power sockets; a universal adapter is useful.
Are any vaccinations required?
Consult your GP or a travel clinic for personalised advice. Generally recommended vaccinations for Egypt include Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid. No Yellow Fever certificate is required for most standard arrivals. Malaria is not generally present in the areas covered on this tour.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. International flights are not included and you book them independently. Your arrival and departure airport is Cairo International Airport (CAI) or Sphinx International Airport (SPX). Airport transfers on the first and last day of the tour are included.
What about tipping?
A tipping kitty is operated on this tour, collected in USD cash at the start. This covers tips for hotel porters, drivers, site guards and other service staff throughout. Your Egyptologist guide's tip is separate and given directly at the end of the tour. Your guide will brief amounts and the kitty payment process on Day 1.
Can I do the hot air balloon over Luxor?
Yes. A sunrise hot air balloon flight over the West Bank of the Nile is available on Day 6. It gives a breathtaking aerial view of the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and Karnak. Book in advance as places are limited and it requires an early start.
Can I add Abu Simbel?
Yes. An early morning optional trip to the UNESCO World Heritage temples of Abu Simbel is available on Day 3 from Aswan. Built by Ramses II and relocated to save them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser, they are one of the most dramatic sites in the whole of Egypt. Book in advance.
Can I add extra days in Cairo?
Yes. Extra nights in Cairo are available both before the tour starts (pre-tour 5-star) and after it ends (post-tour 5-star). Additional Cairo days allow you to visit Coptic Cairo and the Citadel, take a day trip to the Saqqara, Dashour and Memphis pyramid fields, or even travel to the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.
Can I fly back from Hurghada to Cairo instead of driving?
Yes. A flight upgrade from Hurghada to Cairo on Day 9 is available. The drive takes approximately 5 hours on the new fast road, which is comfortable, but the flight option is available for those who prefer to maximise time in Cairo or minimise travel time.
How far ahead should I book?
Saturday departures run throughout the year. Peak periods (October to April and around Christmas and New Year) fill up several months in advance. Booking 3-4 months ahead for peak dates is advisable. The Abu Simbel option and hot air balloon are particularly limited in capacity, so advance booking for these is strongly recommended.
How does booking work?
Reserve online via the Dates and Prices page. Pay a deposit to secure your place or use reserve-now-pay-later. The balance is due eight weeks before departure. Instant confirmation is issued on booking.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory and must cover medical treatment and repatriation. If you plan to do the hot air balloon over Luxor or scuba diving in Hurghada, check that your policy covers those activities specifically. World Nomads Travel Insurance is a recommended starting point. Your policy details must be provided before departure.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale of cancellation charges applies depending on how far in advance you cancel. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Encounters Travel is UK-registered and all customer funds are protected by Trust My Travel's financial protection scheme.
What if my dates are already sold out?
Contact us to join the waitlist for your preferred Saturday departure. We can also run the tour as a private departure on any date. The Discover Egypt or Nubian Adventure tours have their own departure schedules that may offer more availability if the Gods of Egypt dates are full.

We did the 10 day Gods of Egypt tour and it was of the best vacations I've had. Our tour guide Sharif was knowledgeable and very social. Sharif never missed a heartbeat and went our of his way to take care of our needs. The other guides were also fantastic, but Sharif made this trip remarkable.

I just took the Egypt on a shoestring tour and had an amazing time! I highly recommend this tour. Ahmed met us at the airport before going through customs, gave us a briefing on what to expect and even tracked down a lost suitcase for someone in our group. Not an easy feat since the bag had been missing for a week!

Our tour guide Ahmad was exceptionally qualified, he's an Egyptologist who has participated in excavations. He taught us how to read hieroglyphs, the difference between royalty and gods and gave us mini history lessons. He was friendly, patient, knowledgeable and fun. I felt like I was getting a guide from a close friend.

Book through Encounters website directly. We booked through a 3rd party and were given incorrect itinerary information by the 3rd party. Encounters accommodated the itinerary we were given even though it wasn't their fault! They made everything seamless and easy.

Just finished the Gods of Egypt 9-day tour, travelling with my mum. This tour was fast-paced and covered pretty much everything we wanted to see in Egypt. I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking of travelling to Egypt - the Encounters team were excellent and everything was extremely smooth from start to finish. Our Egyptologist guides (Hossam and Mohammed) were very knowledgeable and always happy to answer questions and accommodate requests. We were accompanied by a guide or rep at all times, including airport pickups and even on the cruise, so we always felt safe, had no communication issues, and received very little hassling from street sellers. The hotels booked for us were excellent - each had a great location and was very luxurious and comfortable.
For anyone looking for a comfortable way to enjoy the Nile I would very highly recommend the Nile cruise upgrade - our cruise boat was lovely, all rooms have river views and the food was excellent. The top deck has a pool and sun loungers which is perfect to enjoy watching the world go by as you sail.
Additionally I would definitely recommend flying over taking the train, based on reviews from fellow travellers who took the train.
We travelled in early May and found the weather to be uncomfortably hot (low 40s), though our guides did their best to help us cope - would definitely recommend travelling in spring or autumn when temperatures are more manageable.
All in all I thought Encounters were excellent and very good value, and would highly recommend them - and especially the Gods of Egypt tour which covered all the main sights in comfort.

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Transport

Our trips feature a mix of different transport options. We want you to feel like you’re really experiencing the country you’re travelling through, but at the same time we want you to finish journeys refreshed enough to enjoy the next stage of the tour. In Egypt we do not use any public tourist buses or overnight coach journeys as we know that people don't sleep on board and end up very tired for the following few days. All the vehicles we use are air-conditioned, many are fitted with speed limiters, and all are inspected and checked daily. Some 4WD vehicles used on desert safari options may not always have air conditioning where they are only used for short periods.

This upgraded tour also avoids any overnight train journeys, instead flying from Cairo to Aswan. We will drive on the new faster road back from Hurghada to Cairo, though this journey may be upgraded to a flight if you prefer.

Nile cruise boat itineraries are subject to alterations depending on local conditions at the time of travel. Some sailing may be done after dark. Boats may moor up alongside each other at night, requiring you to cross through other boats to reach the shore. On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve the cruise boats normally run a special Gala Dinner. The cost of this is sometimes compulsory, whether you attend or not, and is not included in our group tour prices, but will be added to your booking price if required.
