Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Machu Picchu Calling tour?
Machu Picchu Calling is our 15-day small-group adventure through Peru, covering the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, the soaring Colca Canyon, the mysterious Nazca Lines, the wildlife-rich Ballestas Islands, and the Amazon jungle near Puerto Maldonado. You travel from Lima to Lima with a maximum of 14 travellers, so the group stays intimate throughout. It is the most thorough single-country Peru itinerary we run, packing in every major highlight in a logical, well-paced loop.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Peru?
Yes, it is one of our best choices for first-timers. You hit the country's greatest highlights in one trip: Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, Colca Canyon, the Nazca Lines, Ballestas Islands, and the Amazon. The itinerary is structured to acclimatise you gradually to altitude before the Inca Trail, and the group size stays at a maximum of 14 so you get proper attention from your guide throughout.
What is the difference between this and your other Peru tours?
Machu Picchu Calling is our flagship 15-day Peru loop that takes in the widest range of highlights, from the Amazon in the east to the Nazca desert in the south. Walking with the Incas (19 days) goes further and adds more trekking depth, particularly along the Inca Trail approaches. Bolivian Encounters (15 days) continues across the border into Bolivia. Mountains to the Lakes (21 days) extends all the way south to the Chilean Lake District. If you have two to three weeks and want the definitive Peru experience without crossing borders, Machu Picchu Calling is the one.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
Peru can be visited year-round, but the dry season from May to October is considered peak trekking season, when skies over the Inca Trail and Sacred Valley are clearest. June to August is the busiest period. The wet season from November to April brings lush green landscapes but muddier trails. We operate Machu Picchu Calling throughout the year, so check the Dates and Prices page for current availability.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Peru tours out there. But Machu Picchu Calling includes the Inca Trail permit (which must be booked months in advance and costs significantly on its own), Amazon jungle accommodation, Nazca Lines overflight, Ballestas Islands boat trip, all ground transport, and 14 nights of guesthouses and simple hotels. With a guide who travels the full 15 days with a maximum of 14 people, and all the logistics pre-handled, the price reflects genuine value rather than hidden extras.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: all accommodation for 14 nights in guesthouses, simple hotels, and jungle lodge; all ground transport and transfers; 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfer service; services of a local tour leader throughout; guided Inca Trail trek; Machu Picchu entrance; Nazca Lines overflight; Ballestas Islands boat trip; Colca Canyon trekking; Amazon jungle activities; and meals as indicated in the itinerary.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, Peru visa (if applicable), travel insurance, meals not listed in the itinerary, entrance fees to sites not covered above, drinks and personal expenses, and tips for your guide and driver. Your guide will brief current amounts for the tipping kitty and any entrance fees at the start of the tour. Budget a daily personal allowance for lunches, snacks, and souvenirs.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can reserve your place with a deposit, or use our reserve-now-pay-later option to hold the space with no immediate payment. The full balance is due eight weeks before departure. Payment can be made by card, bank transfer, or cheque. Full details are in your booking confirmation.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Moderate to strenuous. The classic Inca Trail is a 4-day trek reaching altitudes above 4,000 metres at Dead Woman's Pass. Colca Canyon involves descent and ascent on steep trails. The Amazon section is flat jungle walking. You should be comfortable with multi-day trekking and have no serious altitude-related health concerns. Daily walking on the Inca Trail averages 10-16 km on mountain paths.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
Age is not a barrier if you are fit and acclimatised. Many of our Machu Picchu Calling travellers are in their 50s and 60s and complete the Inca Trail comfortably. The key factors are cardiovascular fitness and allowing time to acclimatise in Cusco before the trek. If you have concerns about altitude, speak to your GP before booking and discuss the acclimatisation days built into the itinerary.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The Inca Trail involves steep, uneven stone steps and altitude above 4,000 metres. It is not suitable for people with significant mobility issues, heart conditions, or severe respiratory problems. If you cannot complete the classic trek but still want to visit Machu Picchu, a private departure can be arranged using the train route to Aguas Calientes as an alternative. Please contact us to discuss options.
How do you handle altitude sickness?
Cusco sits at 3,400 metres and the Inca Trail summit at Dead Woman's Pass reaches 4,215 metres. The tour builds in acclimatisation time in Cusco before the trek begins. Symptoms like headache, fatigue, and nausea are common in the first 24-48 hours. We recommend drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol, and ascending slowly. Your tour leader carries basic medication and can advise. For serious symptoms, descent is always the safest course of action.
Is Peru safe to visit right now?
Peru is a well-established tourist destination and millions of travellers visit safely each year. The main tourist circuits, including Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu, are heavily visited and generally safe. Normal urban precautions apply in Lima and Cusco: keep valuables out of sight, use authorised taxis, and follow your guide's local advice. Check your government's current travel advice before departure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Solo women travellers join this tour regularly and feel comfortable. Travelling in a small group of up to 14 people means you always have company, and your tour leader is with you throughout. Normal sensible precautions apply in the cities, but the tour structure means you are never navigating unfamiliar areas alone.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your tour leader can help arrange access to local medical facilities in any of the main towns. Peru has clinics in Cusco and Lima that deal with altitude-related illness regularly. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is compulsory on this tour. Your leader will have emergency contact numbers and can assist with translation where needed.
Will I be hassled by vendors and touts?
At sites like Machu Picchu and in Cusco's markets you will encounter persistent vendors. Your guide will help manage these situations and steer you through. The best approach is polite but firm: a simple 'no gracias' and continued walking works well. It is part of the local colour rather than anything threatening.
What is the accommodation actually like?
Accommodation is in guesthouses and simple hotels throughout, plus a jungle lodge for the Amazon section. Standards are clean and comfortable at the mid-range level rather than luxury. Rooms are en-suite where available, though some guesthouses at altitude have shared facilities. On the Inca Trail itself you camp, with tents and equipment carried by porters who follow IPPG (International Porter Protection Group) guidelines.
What is the Inca Trail camping like?
Camping gear including tents and sleeping mats is provided on the Inca Trail section. Your porters (who work under IPPG guidelines) carry the camp equipment and set it up at each night's site. You carry your personal daypack. The campsites are designated stops along the trail with basic toilet facilities. Bring a warm sleeping bag, as temperatures at altitude can drop sharply at night.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is available at most hotels in Lima, Cusco, and the larger towns. On the Inca Trail and in the Amazon jungle section, connectivity will be limited or non-existent. This is part of the experience. Download maps and entertainment before you head into these sections.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
This tour runs as a small-group departure with accommodation set at a simple mid-range level. If you want higher-grade hotels throughout, we can arrange the tour as a private departure with your preferred accommodation. Contact us to discuss a tailor-made version.
What kind of food will we eat?
Peruvian food is varied and excellent. Expect fresh ceviche in Lima, hearty soups and potato dishes in the highlands around Cusco, grilled meats and quinoa salads in the Sacred Valley, and simple jungle cooking of fish, rice, and vegetables during the Amazon section. Markets along the route offer tropical fruits and local snacks.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water in Peru is not safe to drink. Stick to bottled water or use a Water-to-Go filter bottle, which removes over 99.9% of contaminants from any non-saltwater source. We recommend bringing a reusable filter bottle to cut down on single-use plastic throughout the trip.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Very much so. Solo travellers make up a large proportion of our small-group departures. With a maximum of 14 people you get to know the whole group quickly, and many lifelong friendships start on tours like this. Your tour leader facilitates introductions from day one.
Do I have to share a room?
The tour is priced on twin-share basis. Solo travellers are paired with a same-sex room-mate where possible. If no match is available, a single supplement applies. Add the single supplement at booking if you prefer guaranteed privacy throughout.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
The group runs with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 14 travellers. Groups are typically a mix of solo travellers, couples, and small groups of friends from English-speaking countries. The age range varies widely, from late 20s to 60s.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Most of our group itineraries can be run privately for your own party, with the flexibility to adjust the accommodation grade and pace. Contact us for a private departure quote.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The Inca Trail's altitude and physical demands make it unsuitable for young children. The minimum age for this tour is 15. Teenagers who are fit and altitude-aware can participate, but we recommend discussing suitability with us before booking.
Do I need a visa for Peru?
Most nationalities including citizens of the US, UK, EU, Canada, and Australia do not need a visa for Peru for tourist stays. Check current requirements on the official Peruvian immigration website before you travel, as rules can change.
What should I pack?
For the Inca Trail: good broken-in hiking boots, moisture-wicking layers, a warm sleeping bag rated to below freezing, waterproof jacket, trekking poles, and sunscreen. For the Amazon: light long-sleeved clothing, insect repellent, and a hat. For Lima and Cusco: smart-casual clothes for evenings. Plug type in Peru is Type A/C (two flat or two round pins). Pack modestly for temple visits.
Are any vaccinations required?
No vaccinations are currently compulsory for Peru, but recommended vaccines include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus. For the Amazon section, malaria prophylactics are advisable. Yellow fever vaccination may be required if entering from certain countries. Consult your GP or a travel clinic well before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No, you book your own international flights to Lima (LIM). We can suggest suitable flight options on request. The tour starts and ends in Lima, so fly in the day before Day 1 if possible.
What about tipping?
A tipping kitty is collected at the start of the tour to cover hotel porters, drivers, and local guides along the route. Your main tour leader is tipped separately at your discretion at the end of the tour. Your leader will brief current suggested amounts at the welcome meeting.
Can I combine this with the Bolivian Encounters tour?
Yes. Our Bolivian Encounters tour (15 days) begins in Lima and continues into Bolivia after covering the Peru highlights. If you want to extend your South American adventure into Bolivia and the Uyuni Salt Flats, speak to our sales team about linking the two itineraries.
Can I add the Walking with the Incas tour?
Walking with the Incas (19 days) is a longer Peru tour that covers more trekking depth. If you want to extend beyond the Machu Picchu Calling itinerary, our sales team can discuss combining or sequencing tours to suit your schedule.
Can I extend my time in Lima?
Yes. Extra nights in Lima at the start or end of the tour can be arranged through us, with airport transfers included on those additional days. Lima is a fascinating city in its own right, with a world-class food scene in Miraflores.
How far ahead should I book?
The Inca Trail has strictly limited daily permits that sell out many months in advance, particularly for the May to September peak season. We strongly recommend booking at least 6 months ahead for peak-season departures to secure your permit. Off-season departures have more flexibility, but early booking always guarantees your preferred date.
How does booking work?
Complete the online reservation form via the Dates and Prices tab. You can pay a deposit, pay in full, or hold a reservation with no immediate payment. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure. You will receive a booking confirmation by email with all the details.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. Your policy must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation, and include trekking activity cover. Because the Inca Trail reaches 4,215 metres at its highest point, ensure your policy covers emergency evacuation at that altitude. World Nomads Travel Insurance covers more than 150 adventure activities and is a popular choice for our travellers.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding-scale cancellation fee applies depending on how far in advance you cancel. Full terms are in our booking conditions. We are a UK-registered company with financial protection through Trust My Travel, so your payments are protected in the event of our insolvency.
What if my dates are already sold out?
We operate a waitlist for full departures. Alternatively, a private departure can be arranged on almost any date. Similar options include Walking with the Incas (19 days) or Mountains to the Lakes (21 days) if you have more time. Contact us and we will find the best fit.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Accommodation

We use good quality small & simple hotels & guesthouses on this tour. Tours visiting the Oasis of Huacachina and the Inca trail trek will also include four nights camping.

Accommodation is based on dorm, twin, triple or double en-suite rooms. We will endeavour to give all couples a private double room. Single travellers may choose to pay a single room supplement to guarantee themselves a single room throughout the tour. Alternatively, they may choose to share a room with one or two other travellers of the same sex. If there are no other single travellers available for you to pair up with at the time of your booking, then we will need to add the single supplement to your tour price, but will refund this or deduct it from your balance payment if we are able to pair you up later on.

Please be aware that hotels in Peru can suffer from common problems such as electrical failure, plumbing faults and other technical difficulties and hot water may occasionally be temperamental if a lot of people are using the showers at the same time. This is a possibility throughout all classes of hotels.

On the Classic Inca trail tents are provided and sleeping bags can be hired locally if you don't want to bring your own.
