Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Nepal Wildlife Safari tour?
Nepal Wildlife Safari is a 13-day journey that combines Kathmandu's temples and stupas with two of Nepal's most spectacular national parks: Chitwan and Bardia. You begin in the Kathmandu Valley, walking through Nagarjun Forest and staying at the remote Shreeban Nature Camp with its panoramic mountain views. Then you descend to the Terai lowlands for a log canoe ride and jeep safari in Chitwan before spending three full days at Bardia Eco Lodge, Nepal's largest and least-visited national park, where your chances of seeing a Bengal tiger are the best in the country. Groups are capped at 12.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Nepal?
Yes. Kathmandu is Nepal's entry point for most international visitors, and the cultural city tour on Day 2 gives you immediate orientation. The tour then takes you off the standard tourist route into Bardia, which most first-timers never see. Your English-speaking Nepali guides are considered a highlight of the tour and will give you context at every step.
What is the difference between this and your other Nepal tours?
Nepal Wildlife Safari focuses entirely on wildlife and nature rather than trekking. It is the right choice if you want to search for tigers, rhinos, and wild elephants rather than summit a mountain pass. If trekking is your priority, the Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit tours are better fits. If you want a cultural and trekking combination, Classic Nepal or Himalayan Discovery cover those elements.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
October to April is generally the best time for wildlife viewing, when the grass is lower after the monsoon burn-off and animals are easier to spot. The post-monsoon period from October to November brings clear skies and lush landscapes. Winter months (December to February) are cooler but excellent for sightings. The monsoon season (June to September) makes park access more difficult and some areas wet, though the tour still runs. Average group sizes are smaller in the low season.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Nepal packages. The difference here is the combination of specialist wildlife safari guides in both Chitwan and Bardia (national park fees and jeep hire are substantial), the internal flight from Nepalganj back to Kathmandu, three nights at Bardia Eco Lodge inside the park boundary, and an overnight at Shreeban Nature Camp, which is not on most Nepal itineraries at all. Three meals are included on most days in the parks, and all park entry and activity fees are covered.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: all accommodation in mid-range hotels and wildlife lodges including Bardia Eco Lodge and Shreeban Nature Camp, private car or minibus throughout, all transfers plus 24-hour airport service, internal flight from Nepalganj to Kathmandu, specialist guides in Kathmandu, Chitwan and Bardia, all national park entry and activity fees, and meals as listed in the itinerary (12 breakfasts, 5 lunches, 7 dinners). Entrance fees to all sites in the itinerary are included.
What is NOT included
and how much extra should I budget?
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Place a deposit to secure your dates and pay the balance 8 weeks before departure. A reserve-now-pay-later option is also available. Contact us to discuss what works for your budget.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Easy to moderate. The Nagarjun Forest walk and the 2-hour walk to Shreeban Nature Camp (jeeps available as an alternative) are the most active elements. Safari activities involve walking on flat jungle tracks and sitting in jeeps. No trekking is required. The altitude in Kathmandu is around 1400m and at Shreeban around 1400-1800m, which most people adapt to without difficulty.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
Nepal Wildlife Safari is well suited to older guests. The pace is relaxed, the safari activities can be as active or as passive as you prefer, and jeeps are available for sections where walking is optional. The Kathmandu altitude rarely causes issues at 1400m. Average group sizes are around 8, meaning the guide can easily adapt the day to the group's energy level.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
Safari jeep rides are accessible to most guests. The jungle walks in Chitwan and Bardia involve uneven terrain and may be difficult for those with significant mobility limitations. The log canoe ride in Chitwan sits very close to the waterline. Please share your specific situation with us and we will advise honestly on what is and is not realistic.
Will I definitely see tigers?
Bardia gives you the best tiger-spotting odds in Nepal, with 3 full days of safari activities. But wildlife sightings are never guaranteed in any national park. Your guides will plan activities around recent sightings and your preference: whether you want to sit and wait near a watering hole or cover more ground actively. One-horned rhinos in Chitwan are more reliably seen and almost certain on a full day. Leopards, wild elephants, gharial crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species are also present.
Is Nepal safe to visit right now?
Nepal is one of Asia's most welcoming destinations for international travellers. Political stability has improved significantly in recent years. The main risks on this tour are standard: be cautious in crowded Kathmandu streets, keep documents secure, and follow your guide's instructions in the national parks. Check your government's current travel advice before departure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Nepal is generally safe for solo women, and Kathmandu and the main tourist areas are well-accustomed to international visitors. In the national parks you are always accompanied by a guide. Standard precautions apply, particularly at night in Thamel. Your guides are briefed to ensure all group members feel comfortable throughout.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Medical facilities in Kathmandu are adequate for most situations. In the national parks, the nearest hospital is several hours away, which is why travel insurance with emergency evacuation cover is compulsory. Your guide will help you access medical care and coordinate with your insurer if needed.
Are the domestic flights in Nepal safe?
All Nepalese domestic airlines are currently on the European Commission's list of carriers banned in the EU. This is a regulatory status rather than a reflection of day-to-day safety. We carefully select airlines with good current reputations in Nepal. Weather delays are common on domestic routes, particularly to Lukla on Everest treks. The Nepalganj to Kathmandu flight on this tour uses a route with a relatively good safety record.
What is the accommodation actually like?
In Kathmandu you stay at Hotel Thamel Park, a 3-star property in the heart of Thamel with a rooftop garden and restaurant. Shreeban Nature Camp in Dhading is a hilltop retreat with solid main-building rooms and safari-style tents with hot solar showers. In Chitwan, Hotel Mona Lisa is a comfortable park-side lodge. Bardia Eco Lodge sits 550 metres from the park entrance, with en-suite garden-view rooms, a restaurant, and terrace. All have Wi-Fi in common areas though signal can be limited in the park lodges.
What is Shreeban Nature Camp like?
Shreeban is a deliberately remote camp on a hilltop near Nalang Village in Dhading district. The main building is made from local rock and indigenous materials. Rooms are comfortable with solar-heated showers, and the dining hall serves Nepali, Chinese, and continental food. From the camp you can see spectacular Himalayan mountain views on clear days, and options for rock climbing and hang gliding can be arranged. It is genuinely off the beaten track and most guests love it.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Kathmandu hotels have reliable Wi-Fi. Shreeban Nature Camp, Chitwan, and Bardia have limited connectivity, reflecting their position in or near national parks. Bring a local SIM for data if staying connected matters to you, though signal is patchy in the Terai.
Can I upgrade?
Yes. The tour can be booked as a private departure with upgraded accommodation options in Kathmandu and the national parks. Contact our sales team for a customised quote.
What kind of food will we eat?
Nepali cuisine features dal bhat (lentil soup with rice), momos (dumplings), and curry-based dishes at the lodges. Kathmandu's Thamel district offers everything from traditional Nepali restaurants to international cuisine. The wildlife lodges in Bardia serve Nepali, continental, and Chinese-style dishes. Meals at Shreeban use fresh ingredients and the camp's own bar stocks locally distilled millet wine.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water is not safe to drink in Nepal. Bottled water is available throughout. A Water-to-Go filter bottle is strongly recommended, particularly for the national park sections where plastic waste is hard to dispose of responsibly.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The group maximum of 12 and average of around 8 creates a friendly dynamic. Solo travellers frequently find the safari environment particularly sociable, as shared sightings create natural conversation. A single supplement is available for solo room occupancy.
Do I have to share a room?
The price is based on two people sharing. Solo travellers can add a single supplement for a private room throughout. If you are happy to share, let us know and we will try to pair you with another single traveller.
What is the group size and who will be on the trip?
Minimum 2, maximum 12. A fully trained English-speaking Nepali escort accompanies the group throughout the 13 days, with specialist city guides in Kathmandu and specialist safari guides in Chitwan and Bardia. The demographic tends to be nature-focused travellers aged 35-65.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The tour can run privately for any party size with fully flexible dates. Contact us for a quotation.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The wildlife safaris are exciting for children, but the long driving days through the Terai, remote lodge settings, and early morning park activities are better suited to families with teenagers. There is no stated minimum age, but discuss your children's ages with us so we can advise on the most appropriate itinerary.
Do I need a visa for Nepal?
Most nationalities including UK, EU, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa can obtain a visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport (KTM). Check the Nepal Immigration Department website for current fees and procedures. Bring 2 passport photos as these may be required for park permits.
What should I pack?
For the national parks: drab-coloured long trousers and long-sleeved shirts for jungle walks and jeep safaris, mosquito repellent, binoculars (highly recommended and not available for hire locally), and sturdy walking shoes. For Kathmandu: modest loose-fitting clothing. For Shreeban and cooler evenings: a warm layer. Check with us if you are uncertain about seasonal kit requirements.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations for Nepal include Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid. Malaria risk is generally low in Nepal but is present in lowland areas including the Terai national parks. Consult your GP or a travel clinic about malaria prophylactics for the Chitwan and Bardia sections of this tour.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. International flights to Kathmandu airport (KTM) are not included. We include the 24-hour arrival and departure transfer. We are happy to suggest flight options on request.
What about tipping?
Tipping is an accepted part of Nepal's tourism culture. Your guides, porters, and drivers will appreciate a tip that reflects excellent service. Your escort will brief you on typical amounts at the start of the tour. Tipping is always voluntary and never obligatory.
Can I do the Everest Mountain Flight?
Yes. This optional 1-hour flight from Kathmandu takes you close to the summit of Everest and the surrounding high peaks, with window seats guaranteed. It is available on Day 12 in Kathmandu and is one of the most popular add-ons on this tour. If cloud prevents the flight from operating, the airline will reschedule or refund.
Can I add Trisuli white water rafting?
Yes. Trisuli river rafting is available as an optional add-on, typically arranged on departure day. It is a popular complement to the wildlife focus of the main tour.
Can I add extra days in Kathmandu?
Yes. Extra nights in Kathmandu can be added before or after the tour to allow time to visit Patan, Bhaktapur, or additional temples and markets independently.
How far ahead should I book?
October to November and February to April are peak seasons in Nepal. Book at least 3 months ahead for these windows. Low-season departures can be arranged with less lead time, though earlier is always better for securing your preferred lodge options.
How does booking work?
Reserve online via the Dates and Prices tab. Pay a deposit, full amount, or hold your reservation. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure. You will receive instant confirmation and a full trip pack including tour notes.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. Cover must include medical expenses and emergency evacuation. The tour reaches an altitude of around 1800m at Shreeban and involves national park activities, so ensure your policy explicitly covers these. World Nomads offers suitable broad adventure coverage.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding-scale fee applies depending on how far in advance you cancel. Full terms are in our booking conditions. We are UK-registered and your funds are protected by Trust My Travel insurance.
What if my preferred dates are sold out?
Contact us and we can arrange a private departure on alternative dates, or add you to the waitlist for your preferred departure. Our other Nepal tours including Classic Nepal and Himalayan Discovery are also worth considering as alternatives.

A quite unique and interesting visit to Nepal and Bhutan. Overall the trip was two weeks of peak experiences although arrival and departure at Kathmandu airport were quite chaotic. The guided visits to key sites in Kathmandu were very high quality and informative. But without doubt the highlight was a week in Bhutan. Our guide, Rinzin, personalised the visit in so many memorable ways. There was a lot of time on the bus but there is no other way of getting to visit the myriad of historic places

We used Encounters Travel as the organizer for our Dec 2019 Everest Base Camp Trek in Nepal. They handled everything from the flight booking to the airport shuttle to the guide/porter arrangements. Their planning was well organized which allowed us to focus solely on getting through the physical challenges of the trek.
We were booked on Qatar Air which was nice for our 30+ hours of traveling each way. The hotel they had booked for us in Kathmandu was clean and comfortable with a very nice staff (and great location). Lastly, the guide & porter for our trek were absolutely fantastic. Dipesh (our guide) was professional and took time each day to discuss how we were feeling and address any concerns or questions that we had. I honestly do not think we would have made it to Base Camp if not for the expertise of Dipesh.
Encounters Travel made this trek much less stressful than it could have been, and on a trek that is stressful & difficult by its very nature, that was a relief. I don't often book travel with a tour company, but I will likely be coming back to Encounters Travel in the future. HIGHLY recommended.

I have just returned from the Nepal on a Shoestring Tour and I can highly recommend it. A fantastic, non-stop way to be introduced to Nepal; Kathmandu, Chitwan and Pokhara in 8 days. I added on an additional day at the start which did mean I had some quiet time before the action began! Our guide, Dipesh, who escorted us for the trip entirety was brilliant and very patient with our relentless questions! The bus trips between locations were long but a fantastic way to see the Nepalese countryside, you do need to be patient with the Nepalese roadways! I loved every minute and would highly recommend Encounters Travel and this tour. Now looking at my next trip with Encounters Travel!

My husband and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Encounters Travel for giving us the opportunity to experience the 10 Day Nepal Exposed Tour. Encounters Travel was great from even before the trip began in planning the trip, answering all our inquiries and providing us information in a timely matter. We would like to say this trip was phenomenal and left us both with memories and adventures that will last a lifetime.

We would like to give special recognition to our tour guide Ram Hari Aryal, who is a real professional and gave us individualized attention from the beginning of the trip when we arrived at the Kathmandu Airport to our departure back home. Ram really made this trip special for us and has such great knowledge of Nepal’s history, culture and geography. He also became a friend to us by the end of the tour.

The driver that accompanied us throughout the entire trip and drove us through the country deserves praise as well. He is polite and got out to open the door for us every time we stopped somewhere. He is a very good driver and we felt safe throughout the entire journey through the countryside.

In Kathmandu, we were assigned the same guide twice to show us through a few cities. His name was Prakash Luitel and he is wonderful and very knowledgeable of his country. The fellow who was our guide in Chitwan National Park was also very professional, energetic and friendly.

The accommodations were fabulous. All the hotels that we stayed in were great. We especially were impressed by Apsara Boutique Hotel in Kathmandu for their splendid rooms and exceptional staff. Another favorite of ours was Gaun Ghar located in Bandipur. We loved the décor of the hotel with stone floors and walls it gave us the feel that we were back in the 19th century. Also, great manager and staff that really made you feel at home. Not to mention the view of the mountains from our room that made us feel like we were in heaven.

We traveled through Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara, Bandipur and Nagarkot. My husband and I asked each other at the end of the trip which city did we like the best. The both us could not pick one. We liked all of them. They all had their unique and individual charm and beauty. These are a few of our many favorite highlights of the trip:

1. Everest Mountain Flight
2. Tour of Lalitpur aka Patan
3. Monkey Temple (Kathmandu)
4. Chitwan National Park wildlife safari
5. Boat ride on Phewa Lake (Chiwan)
6. World Peace Stupa (Pokhara)
7. Devi Falls (Pokhara)
8. Boudhanath Supa (Kathmandu)
9. Durbar Square (Kathmandu)
10. Pasupatinath (Kathmandu)

Every day was wonderful on this tour and a real adventure. We would love to take another tour again in the future and we would recommend Encounters Travel to our family, friends and coworkers.

Some (hopefully) constructive criticism: we recommend that you advertise to potential travelers the option of extra days in Kathmandu more prominently and frequently in your literature. We didn’t realize until much later that we could’ve extended our stay for such little cost. We would’ve done it if the option had emphasized.

Under Day 12, the “upgrade to an [sic] domestic flight” is misleading. We assumed that if we took the flight we wouldn’t miss anything on the agenda. Big mistake! Thank God we called your office and clarified that we’d not see Nagarkot, Bhaktapur, Pasupatinath and Boudhanath. What a loss that would’ve been!

Nepali toilets are not up to Western standards. A tip to bring one’s own toilet paper (and lots of it), and to prepare for horrific sights and smells, would’ve been appreciated.

We strongly urge you to include Lalitpur (Patan) in the Class Exposed itinerary. It doesn’t take so long to see and it’s well worth making time for. We also were a little disappointed that we couldn’t see Lumbini, Buddha’s birthplace.

Thank you again for an epic experience!

Encounters Travel/Uncover the World in the UK organised a trip to Nepal and Bhutan for me during Nov 2016.

When reviewing the various options out there I was impressed with their knowledge in the area and they were able to put together a good itinerary covering a good many sites across a number of regions. They organised hotels, transfers, guides and drivers as well as Bhutanese visas and flights between Nepal and Bhutan. Everything worked well and despite being a solo traveller I had a driver and guide during all my time in both countries. Hotels were good, comfortable, well located and entirely appropriate to this type of trip. The overall itinerary was excellent and I was able to see much of Bhutan - Thimpu, Paro and Punakha valleys - and some very interesting parts of Nepal - Kathmandu, Bhaktaput and Nagarkot - within some 11 days.

I booked the major international routes myself and used Oman Air who had by far the best connections to Kathmandu and a reasonable business class fare and Ant at Encounters booked the rest. Not a particularly cheap visit - Bhutan is possibly the most expensive country in the world to visit - but I can't see how I could have done it better or cheaper.

I'd certainly use these guys again for this type of trip - they really know their business.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Group Size/Tour Leaders/Guides

We are committed to being a small group operator, as we feel this gives everyone in the group the best chance to get to know their fellow travellers and to hear and make the most of their guide. There’s no point in us providing great guides if you’ve got to peer over 30-40 shoulders to see them! So, we won’t ever put you in a 50-seater coach with 49 other people and just one guide. Instead, we set this Nepal group departures to have a maximum of 12 travellers. Average group sizes are around  8 people, lower during the low season (December-February, June-September).

Fully trained English-speaking Nepalese trekking, rafting and safari guides are provided in Nepal and many of our travellers consider them a highlight of their tour. We also provide a fully trained English-speaking guide for any sightseeing tours. A tour leader (often your trekking guide) will accompany you throughout the trip.

We support and follow international guidelines for the employment of any trekking porters we use, including those of the IPPG (International Porter Protection Group)

At Encounters Travel we only use local Nepali guides and reps. We feel this gives you the best experience of the country and the sites you are seeing.
