Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Okavango & Chobe tour?
The Okavango & Chobe tour is a 12-day small group journey that loops from Victoria Falls back to Victoria Falls, taking in three of southern Africa's most celebrated wildlife destinations: the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, and Moremi Game Reserve. You'll take a mokoro canoe through the papyrus channels of the Okavango, watch elephants drink at the Chobe River (home to 40,000 to 60,000 elephants, the largest concentration in Africa), visit Tsodilo Hills (UNESCO World Heritage site with over 4,500 rock paintings), and walk beside Victoria Falls itself. Groups are small (maximum 12) and travel in a 12-seater quantum minivan and 4x4 safari vehicles.
What does the Okavango & Chobe itinerary actually cover?
The tour departs Victoria Falls and travels into the Zambezi Region/Caprivi Strip (Zambezi Mubala Lodge, afternoon river cruise for hippos, crocodiles, and birdlife), Divundu on the Okavango River (Rainbow River Lodge), Popa Falls (cascades, crocodiles, hippos) and Mahangu National Park game drive (elephant, buffalo, sable antelope, roan antelope), then crosses into Botswana to Nguma Island Lodge (sunset cruise, papyrus delta channels), Tsodilo Hills (4,500+ rock paintings, the "Louvre of the Desert"), Maun, Khwai Conservation Area and Moremi Game Reserve (Meru-style tented camp with en-suite facilities, bucket shower, mokoro canoe excursion), Nata and Elephant Sands (elephants roam freely around an unfenced lodge, natural waterhole metres from your chalet), Chobe National Park (bush walk, Chobe River boat cruise, Kasane/Thebe River Safaris Lodge), and finally Victoria Falls (PheZulu Lodge, Mosi-oa-Tunya "the smoke that thunders").
What makes this different from a standard safari tour?
Most safari packages focus on a single national park. Okavango and Chobe connects three distinct ecosystems (the Zambezi floodplain, the Okavango Delta, and the Chobe River corridor) on a single journey, using the right vehicle for each terrain: a minivan on roads, 4x4 safari vehicles for game areas, and mokoro canoes and river cruise boats on the water. The result is a more complete picture of the wildlife of the Botswana-Namibia-Zimbabwe border region than any single-park safari can offer.
Is this tour suitable for first-time safari travellers?
Yes. The varied format (game drives, boat cruises, mokoro canoe, bush walk) gives first-timers multiple ways to experience African wildlife. The small group size (maximum 12) and qualified guides mean you're well looked after. Arrive in Victoria Falls the day before the tour departs so you have time to settle and visit the falls.
What wildlife can we expect to see?
Chobe is famous for elephant: the national park holds 40,000 to 60,000 elephants and the river cruise brings you very close to herds drinking and swimming. The Okavango Delta and Moremi are excellent for leopard, lion, wild dog, red lechwe, and diverse birdlife. Mahangu National Park has large herds of elephant and buffalo, plus sable and roan antelope. Elephant Sands has elephants roaming freely around the lodge waterhole. Hippos and crocodiles are present throughout the Zambezi and Okavango waterways.
Why does Okavango & Chobe cost what it does?
Twelve days of private 12-seater minivan and 4x4 safari vehicle transport, accommodation ranging from lodges to a Meru-style tented camp in Moremi, 11 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and 9 dinners, and all national park entrance fees, activity fees, and excursions included. The included activities are substantial: Zambezi boat cruise, Popa Falls boat cruise, Mahangu National Park game drive, Okavango boat cruise, Tsodilo Hills day trip, mokoro canoe excursion, Moremi game drive, and Chobe bush walk and boat cruise. Comparable activities booked independently in Botswana and Namibia add up quickly.
What's included in the price?
Included: all transport (12-seater quantum minivan and 4x4 safari vehicles), accommodation throughout, 11 breakfasts/2 lunches/9 dinners, all national park entrance fees, Zambezi River boat cruise, Popa Falls boat cruise, Mahangu National Park game drive, Okavango boat cruise, Tsodilo Hills day trip, mokoro canoe excursion in the Okavango Delta, Moremi game drive, Chobe bush walk, and Chobe River boat cruise.
What's NOT included and what extra should I budget for?
Not included: international flights to and from Victoria Falls, arrival and departure airport transfers (available as paid supplements), travel insurance, tips for guides and drivers, optional activities (white-water rafting, bungee jumping, and helicopter flights at Victoria Falls are popular), meals beyond those included, and personal expenses. Note: room shares are not available on this tour. Solo travellers must book the single supplement.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit to secure your booking and the balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is Okavango & Chobe?
This is a moderate trip. Game drives are passive. Boat cruises are easy. The Tsodilo Hills day trip involves walking among rock paintings; some sections require light hiking over uneven ground. The Moremi bush walk involves walking in the bush with a guide. The mokoro canoe excursion is easy paddling. At Victoria Falls, the rainforest walk involves some steps and uneven paths but is not strenuous. Comfortable walking shoes are essential throughout.
Do I need any special skills for the mokoro canoe?
No. Mokoro canoes are punted by an experienced local guide. You sit in the canoe while the guide poles through the papyrus channels of the Okavango Delta. No paddling experience is required. The canoes are stable and the excursion is suitable for all levels.
What if I have mobility issues?
Boat cruises and game drives in 4x4 vehicles are accessible to most travellers. The Tsodilo Hills rock art sites and the Moremi bush walk involve uneven natural terrain and are not suitable for travellers with significant mobility limitations. Contact us before booking if this is a concern.
Is Botswana and Namibia safe to visit?
Botswana is consistently rated as one of Africa's most stable and safe countries for international visitors. Namibia is also considered very safe. The Caprivi Strip section of Namibia (Zambezi Region) has excellent tourist infrastructure. Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls area is heavily visited and safe for tourists. Check your government's current travel advisories before booking.
Is Okavango & Chobe safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. The small group format with a maximum of 12, combined with experienced local guides, makes this a very safe tour for solo female travellers. Note that room shares are not available: solo travellers have a private room or tent throughout, which many solo travellers prefer.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Victoria Falls, Kasane (Chobe), and Maun (Okavango gateway) all have clinics and medical facilities. Remote sections like Moremi are further from major facilities. Travel insurance covering medical expenses and emergency repatriation is compulsory on all our tours, and we require your policy details before departure.
What vaccinations are recommended?
Malaria is present throughout most of this itinerary, including Botswana and Namibia's northern regions. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Consult a travel health clinic at least 6 weeks before departure. Yellow Fever vaccination requirements vary depending on which countries you're travelling from and through. Hepatitis A and Typhoid are routinely recommended for travel in southern Africa.
What's the accommodation like?
The tour uses a mix of 2 to 3-star hotels and lodges, and one Meru-style tented camp. Key properties include Zambezi Mubala Lodge (Caprivi, Zambezi River), Rainbow River Lodge (Divundu, Okavango River), Nguma Island Lodge (Botswana, Okavango Delta), the Meru-style tented camp in Khwai/Moremi (en-suite, bucket shower: genuinely comfortable safari camping), Thebe River Safaris Lodge (Kasane, Chobe), and PheZulu Lodge (Victoria Falls). Elephant Sands Lodge has your chalet within metres of a natural elephant waterhole.
What is a Meru tent and what does ""bucket shower"" mean?
A Meru tent is a large canvas tent on a raised platform with proper beds, bedside furniture, and en-suite bathroom facilities. It's full-service safari camping: private, comfortable, and immersive. A bucket shower is heated water poured into a canvas bucket suspended above you: effective, surprisingly pleasant, and standard practice at camps in wilderness areas without plumbing.
Will there be Wi-Fi?
Lodges in Kasane and Victoria Falls have Wi-Fi. Camps in the Okavango Delta and Moremi are in wilderness areas without connectivity. Expect limited or no internet access for several days in the middle section of the tour.
Are single rooms available?
Room shares are NOT available on this tour. All travellers (solo, couples, and groups) are accommodated individually. This means solo travellers are not required to share with a stranger, but the single supplement is mandatory. It is built into the pricing structure for this tour.
What kind of food will we eat?
Lodge and hotel meals are the standard throughout, with a mix of buffet and plated dinners. Botswana lodges typically serve international cuisine with local elements: game meats, fresh fish from the rivers, local vegetables. Victoria Falls area restaurants offer a broad range of options. Nine of the eleven dinners are included.
Can you cater for vegetarian or vegan diets?

Yes, we are delighted to cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements wherever possible! Simply let us know your dietary preferences or allergies at the time of booking so our team can notify our tour leaders, hotels, and restaurants in advance. While meal options in more remote areas may be simpler, we always do our utmost to ensure you enjoy plentiful, delicious, and authentic local food throughout your adventure with us.

Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water safety varies. Drink bottled or lodge-provided purified water throughout the tour. Your guide will advise at each location.
Is this a good tour for solo travellers?
Yes, and the fact that room shares are not available is a positive for many solo travellers. You have a private room or tent at every property, you travel in a group of up to 12, and you have the social dynamic of a small group without the awkwardness of sharing with a stranger. The single supplement is required, but it's offset by the privacy.
What's the group size and dynamic?
Minimum 4, maximum 12. The 12-seater quantum minivan means you're travelling in a genuinely small group. Long drive days and shared game drives create a strong group dynamic over 12 days.
Can I book Okavango & Chobe as a private tour?
Contact us to discuss private departure options for couples, families, or small groups wanting an exclusive departure.
Is this tour suitable for older travellers?
Yes. The lodge accommodation is comfortable throughout, game drives and boat cruises are low-impact, and the small group maximum of 12 means the pace is manageable. The Tsodilo Hills and Moremi bush walk involve some uneven ground: contact us if mobility is a concern.
Do I need a visa for Botswana and Namibia?
The tour enters Namibia (Zambezi Region/Caprivi Strip) and Botswana. Most nationalities, including UK, US, Canadian, Australian, and EU citizens, do not need advance visas for either country for short tourist stays. Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls) is part of the start and end point: the Kaza Univisa covers both Zimbabwe and Zambia for eligible nationalities. Check current visa requirements for your specific nationality before booking.
Should I arrive at Victoria Falls a day early?
Yes. The tour notes specifically state that you should plan to arrive at Victoria Falls one day before the tour departs. Airport transfers at the start are available as a paid supplement. This gives you time to settle, visit the falls, and not risk missing the departure due to flight delays.
What should I pack?
Neutral-coloured clothing for game viewing (avoid bright colours and white), comfortable walking shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen, DEET-based insect repellent, a warm layer for early morning game drives and cool evenings, a waterproof jacket (Victoria Falls rainforest walk will get you wet), binoculars, and a camera with a telephoto lens if you have one. Luggage is loaded into a minivan so soft bags are preferable.
What currencies will I need?
The tour covers Namibia (Namibian Dollar, interchangeable with South African Rand), Botswana (Pula), and Zimbabwe (US Dollar widely used). For tips and optional activities, carry US dollars or the local currency of each country. Your guide will brief the group before each country crossing.
What about tipping?
Tips for your guide and driver are not included in the tour price and are at your discretion. Your guide will brief the group on norms at the start of the tour.
What optional activities are available?
At Victoria Falls (start and end of tour), popular optional activities include white-water rafting on the Zambezi, bungee jumping from the Victoria Falls Bridge, and helicopter flights over the falls. In the Okavango Delta, a scenic flight over the delta is available. During the Mahangu section, an afternoon game drive is available as an optional extra. Airport transfers at Victoria Falls (arrival and departure) are also available as paid supplements.
Are there related tours I can combine with Okavango & Chobe?
Yes. Related tours include the Namibia and Botswana Uncovered (12 days) and the Okavango and Chobe 8-day version. Contact us about combining tours or extending your trip into Namibia's Skeleton Coast or south into South Africa.
How far ahead should I book?
With a maximum of 12 participants, departures sell out. We recommend booking 3 to 6 months ahead for most dates, and further ahead if you're travelling during peak holiday periods.
How does booking work?
Book online or contact us directly. Pay a deposit to confirm your place and the balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, it is compulsory on all our tours. Your policy must cover medical expenses and emergency repatriation as a minimum. We require your insurance details before departure.
What's your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale applies based on how close to departure you cancel. Full terms are in our booking conditions. We partner with Trust My Travel for financial protection of your booking.
What if the tour doesn't reach minimum numbers?
We require a minimum of 4 participants. If a departure does not reach minimum numbers, we will notify you as early as possible and offer an alternative departure or a full refund.

During your time in the Okavango Delta, you'll experience a rustic mobile fly camp, staying in comfortable Meru-style tents equipped with single beds and en-suite amenities like bucket showers and chemical toilets, providing an authentic safari experience under the stars.

Please check the Single Room Supplement option for details on room sharing options and charges for solo travellers on this tour.
