Why book the Patagonia Highlights tour?
Patagonia Highlights is an 11-day one-way overland journey from Punta Arenas in Chile to El Chalten in Argentina, through some of the most dramatic scenery on earth. You visit the Magdalena Island penguin colony (the largest in southern Chile), spend 3 nights camping in Torres del Paine National Park (UNESCO, 181,000 hectares) with a guided hike to the Three Towers, cross into Argentina for the Perito Moreno Glacier (30km long, advancing 2m a day), El Calafate, and finish in El Chalten with a guided hike to Laguna de los Tres and views of the Fitz Roy massif. Minimum 5, maximum 20 travellers on a Mercedes-chassis expedition truck. Season-dependent operation.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Patagonia?
Yes, provided you're prepared for the realities of Patagonian adventure travel: camping in a region famous for unpredictable weather, multi-day hiking on remote trails, and a rugged expedition-truck journey. If you've done any camping and hiking before and genuinely want to experience Patagonia's iconic landscapes, this is an excellent starting point.
What does the one-way format mean?
This tour starts in Punta Arenas (Chile) and ends in El Chalten (Argentina). You need to fly into Punta Arenas (or connect via Santiago) at the start and fly out from near El Chalten (El Calafate airport transfer is available on the last day). This is not a loop: plan your international flights accordingly.
What's the best time of year to do this tour?
Patagonia's outdoor season runs from approximately October to April (the southern hemisphere spring and summer). The tour is not operated year-round due to harsh winter conditions. November to March offers the most reliable weather windows for hiking in Torres del Paine. Shoulder season (October, April) has the benefit of fewer visitors but higher weather variability.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, camping can look cheap. But the Torres del Paine National Park camping fees, the guided trek to the Three Towers and to Laguna de los Tres (Fitz Roy), the Perito Moreno Glacier walkway access, the penguin colony boat trip to Magdalena Island, 10 breakfasts, 4 lunches, and 3 dinners, and 11 days on an expedition truck with a qualified guide all add up. Patagonia's remoteness and park infrastructure mean this is one of the more expensive regions to operate in.
What's actually included in the price?
Included: 10 nights accommodation (simple hotels plus 3 nights camping in Camping Pehoe, Torres del Paine), 10 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 3 dinners, overland expedition truck transport, guided hike to the Three Towers (Torres del Paine), guided hike to Laguna de los Tres (El Chalten), Perito Moreno Glacier walkways access, penguin colony boat trip to Magdalena Island, and all listed entrance fees.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, travel insurance, most meals (roughly 4 lunches and several dinners on your own), personal spending, and guide tips are not included. A local payment for park fees, camping, or activities may be collected in cash on Day 1 of the tour; bring sufficient cash in the local currency. Sleeping bag hire is available if you don't bring your own. Optional glacier boat tour on Lago Pehoe is an extra cost.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve with a deposit and pay the balance 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Strenuous. The guided hike to the Three Towers in Torres del Paine is approximately 19km round trip with significant elevation gain. The El Chalten hike to Laguna de los Tres involves 500m to 800m of ascent. Both are full hiking days. You need to be in good cardiovascular shape and comfortable with sustained uphill walking on mountain trails.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
Age is less relevant than fitness level for this tour. Many travellers in their 50s and 60s complete the Three Towers and Fitz Roy hikes without difficulty. What matters is that you're genuinely fit for sustained hiking. If you have any doubt about managing 19km with elevation gain, be honest with yourself before booking.
What if I have mobility issues?
The Three Towers hike and Laguna de los Tres hike are not accessible for anyone with significant mobility limitations. The Perito Moreno Glacier has a developed walkway system that is accessible to most visitors. If you cannot complete the hiking days, this tour would have significant gaps in its itinerary for you.
How cold does it get in Patagonia?
Patagonia is famously unpredictable. Even in summer, temperatures can drop sharply, rain and wind can arrive without warning, and the Torres del Paine camping nights can be genuinely cold. A quality waterproof jacket and warm layers are not optional. Come prepared for all four seasons in a day.
Is Patagonia safe to visit?
Punta Arenas, Torres del Paine, El Calafate, and El Chalten are all well-established tourist destinations with good infrastructure. Remote trail sections require the usual mountain safety awareness. Your guides are experienced in Patagonian conditions and will not take unnecessary weather risks on the hikes.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Patagonia is a very safe destination for solo female travellers. The expedition group format provides natural community and mutual support. Chilean and Argentine outdoor culture is welcoming and respectful.
What happens if I get sick or injured on the trail?
Your guide is your first contact. Search and rescue services exist in Torres del Paine and the national parks, though response times in remote areas can be extended. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is compulsory and must explicitly cover trekking in remote mountain environments. Prevention (proper footwear, pacing, hydration) is the best strategy.
What if the weather cancels the hikes?
Torres del Paine and Patagonia have notoriously variable weather. If conditions make the Three Towers hike unsafe, your guide will make the call and offer alternative activities. This is the nature of Patagonian adventure travel. The itinerary is designed with some flexibility for weather impacts.
What's the accommodation actually like?
The tour mixes simple hotels in Punta Arenas, El Calafate, and El Chalten with 3 nights camping at Camping Pehoe inside Torres del Paine. Camping Pehoe sits on the shore of Lago Pehoe with direct views of the Towers: one of the most spectacular campsite locations in the world. Tents are provided (or available to hire); bring or hire a sleeping bag. Hotel accommodation is simple and clean.
What are the camping nights like?
Camping Pehoe has basic facilities: toilets, covered cooking areas, and the extraordinary surrounding landscape. Evenings in the park are cold; the sunrise views of the Torres del Paine granite towers are among the best in the world. This is proper camping in a UNESCO-listed wilderness.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Hotels in Punta Arenas, El Calafate, and El Chalten have Wi-Fi. The Torres del Paine camping section has no connectivity. A local SIM (Chilean or Argentine) with data is recommended.
Can I hire a sleeping bag?
Yes. Sleeping bag hire is available if you'd prefer not to bring your own on international flights. Confirm at booking.
What kind of food will we eat?
Patagonian food reflects the region: lamb is a staple (asado, or slow-roasted whole lamb on an open fire, is a Chilean and Argentine tradition), fresh fish, and hearty stews. In Punta Arenas, Cerveza Austral is the local craft beer. El Chalten's small town restaurants serve excellent comfort food after long hiking days. The 10 included breakfasts and 4 lunches keep you fuelled for the physical days.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Water quality in Patagonian national parks is generally very high; glacial meltwater in the backcountry is among the cleanest in the world. In towns, tap water is safe. Your guide will advise on the specific water situation throughout.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Excellent. Expedition overland tours attract a strong proportion of solo travellers, and shared physical challenges (the hikes, the cold camping nights) create fast bonds. The maximum group size of 20 means it's communal without being overwhelming.
Do I have to share a room?
A single supplement is available at hotel nights. Camping tents are typically shared with another traveller unless you pay for an individual tent. Confirm at booking.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Minimum 5, maximum 20 travellers. Groups are typically adventure-oriented, from solo travellers to couples, drawn by a shared desire to experience one of the planet's most extraordinary landscapes.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. A private departure can be arranged for families or groups. Contact us to discuss dates and any customisation.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The strenuous hiking (19km Three Towers hike, 500-800m ascent to Laguna de los Tres) means this tour is best suited to fit teenagers and adults. Younger children would find the hiking days very demanding.
Do I need a visa for Chile and Argentina?
UK, US, EU, Australian, and Canadian passport holders do not need a visa for Chile or Argentina for tourist stays. Check current requirements for your nationality on the official immigration websites of each country.
What should I pack?
Quality waterproof jacket and over-trousers (Patagonian weather is serious), warm layers (fleece, base layer), sturdy hiking boots (broken in), a sleeping bag if not hiring one, sun protection (UV is intense at southern latitudes), and a small day pack for hikes. Luggage on the expedition truck is limited; pack efficiently.
Are any vaccinations required?
No specific vaccinations are required for Chile or Argentina. Standard health precautions and a visit to your GP before departure are recommended.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. Fly into Punta Arenas (PUQ) at the start. A transfer to El Calafate airport (FTE) is available on the last day. Book international flights independently. Note: Punta Arenas usually requires a connection via Santiago (SCL).
What about the local payment on Day 1?
A local payment for park fees and related costs is required in cash on Day 1 of the tour. Your booking documentation will specify the exact amount and currency required. Bring this in the correct currency.
Can I do the glacier boat tour on Lago Pehoe?
Yes. An optional glacier boat tour on Lago Pehoe within Torres del Paine is available. Floating among the ice floes with the Towers as backdrop is an extraordinary experience.
Can I add extra days in El Chalten or El Calafate?
Yes. Both towns reward extra time. El Chalten has additional hiking trails in Los Glaciares National Park. El Calafate is the gateway to the Perito Moreno Glacier and further ice-field experiences.
How far ahead should I book?
The operating season is limited. Book as early as possible for November-January departures, which are the most popular. At least 3-4 months ahead is recommended.
How does booking work?
Reserve online with a deposit for instant confirmation. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure. Confirm your arrival airport and departure plans for both ends of this one-way tour.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is compulsory and must cover trekking in remote mountain environments and medical evacuation from remote areas. World Nomads is a good option for adventure travel.
What's your cancellation policy?
A sliding-scale cancellation policy applies with charges increasing closer to departure. Full terms are in the booking conditions. UK-registered and protected by Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are sold out?
Contact us to join the waitlist or to discuss alternative season dates. Private departures with adjusted dates are also possible.
