Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Petra and the Bedouin Trail tour?
This 9-day active journey takes you deep into the real Jordan, spending five nights camping under the stars in Wadi Rum and hiking the ancient Bedouin Trail through canyons and desert mountains. You visit Petra on foot from the back door rather than through the Siq, summit Jebel Umm ad Dami (Jordan's highest peak at 1854m), stay in Madaba and Petra town, and return to Amman having covered the country's most dramatic landscapes on your own two feet. The group caps at 12, so it stays genuinely small throughout.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Jordan?
Yes, if you are fit and comfortable with multi-day hiking. The itinerary covers Madaba and its famous Byzantine mosaics, Wadi Rum and Petra, so you see Jordan's headline sights alongside the wilderness hiking. That said, this is an active and challenging tour. If you would prefer to explore Jordan without the demanding trekking, our Jordan Express (6 days) or Best of Jordan (7 days) tours are better fits.
What is the difference between this and your other Jordan tours?
The Petra and Bedouin Trail stands apart because hiking is the core of the experience. You spend five nights camping in Wadi Rum and cover between 6 and 18 kilometres a day on foot along the Bedouin Trail, culminating in a summit of Jebel Umm ad Dami. Jordan Express (6 days) is a compact highlights tour by transport. Best of Jordan (7 days) covers the classical sites without the multi-day trekking. Egypt Express (8 days) extends into Egypt.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
The best hiking seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Temperatures in Wadi Rum and on the Bedouin Trail are more comfortable and daylight hours are good. Summer heat in the desert can be extreme and winter nights at altitude are cold, though the trail can be done year-round with the right gear. Your guide will advise on conditions for your specific departure.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Jordan tours. But those tours are not five nights wild-camping in Wadi Rum with Bedouin guides, hiking a route that includes Jordan's highest peak and entering Petra on foot through the back canyons. This tour includes all camping equipment (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, trekking poles), all entrance fees to Petra and Wadi Rum (which are substantial), all meals during the camping days, and Bedouin jeep transfers. The guide-to-guest ratio on a group of 12 is also meaningfully higher than on a 45-seat coach tour.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: all accommodation (hotels in Madaba, Petra and Amman plus all five nights camping), all transport and transfers, arrival and departure airport transfers in Amman, AC minivan and Bedouin jeeps, services of a local tour leader and Bedouin guides, entrance fees to Petra and Wadi Rum, all camping equipment (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, trekking poles), and meals as listed in the itinerary (8 breakfasts, 6 lunches, 6 dinners).
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, visa fees, travel insurance, tips for guides and drivers, and meals not listed in the itinerary are not included. A Jordan Pass is NOT recommended for this tour because entrance fees to Petra and Wadi Rum are already included in your tour price. Your guide will brief current tipping norms at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can pay a deposit to secure your place, use our reserve-now-pay-later option, or pay in full at booking. Balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
This is a demanding active tour. Hiking days on the Bedouin Trail cover 6 to 18 kilometres depending on the day, with some days running 7 to 8 hours including the ascent of Jebel Umm ad Dami (1854m). Day 5 is the longest and hardest, covering 16 to 18 kilometres over 7 to 8 hours. You should be fit, comfortable with sustained uphill walking in rocky desert terrain, and happy sleeping in a tent.
What are the daily hiking distances?
Day 3 covers 10 to 12 kilometres over 5 to 6 hours. Day 4 covers 8 to 10 kilometres over 5 to 6 hours. Day 5, the summit day to Jebel Umm ad Dami (1854m), covers 16 to 18 kilometres over 7 to 8 hours. Day 6 covers 8 to 10 kilometres over 4 to 5 hours. Day 7 covers 8 to 10 kilometres over 4 to 5 hours. Day 8 is a shorter 6 to 7 kilometres over 4 to 5 hours, finishing with an entry into Petra from the back canyon trails.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
Age is less relevant than fitness here. If you walk regularly and are comfortable with sustained uphill trekking in challenging terrain, you can do this tour at a wide range of ages. The group of 12 stays together and the Bedouin guides set a manageable pace. Be honest with yourself: the summit day is genuinely hard and should not be underestimated.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
This tour is not suitable for travellers with significant mobility restrictions. The terrain is rocky and uneven, involving canyon walls, desert mountain ascents, and loose scree. If you have concerns about a specific condition, contact us before booking. Travellers who want to see Wadi Rum and Petra without the hard hiking should consider our Jordan Express or Best of Jordan tours instead.
Is Jordan safe to visit?
Jordan is one of the most stable and welcoming countries in the Middle East, and has been a reliable destination for international travellers for decades. Wadi Rum and Petra are established tourism areas. We monitor official government travel advisories continuously and would not operate if conditions were unsafe.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Jordan is a conservative Muslim country but is generally very safe for solo women travellers. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered in towns and at religious sites). In Wadi Rum, your Bedouin guides and the small group of 12 provide a secure and social environment. Many solo women travel this tour.
What happens if I get sick or injured on the trail?
Your guide carries a first aid kit and knows the evacuation routes. In serious emergencies, Bedouin jeeps can reach most of the trail and your guide has contacts for medical assistance. Aqaba and Amman have hospitals. Travel insurance is compulsory and must include emergency medical treatment and repatriation. For any medical condition relevant to strenuous desert hiking, consult your GP before booking.
Will I be hassled by vendors at Petra?
There are vendors, camel rides and souvenir sellers near the main Petra sites. They are persistent but not aggressive. Entering Petra on foot from the back canyon on Day 8 takes you in via a less-trafficked route before reaching the main Treasury area. A polite but firm 'no thank you' is usually sufficient. Your guide will also advise.
What is the accommodation actually like?
Hotels in Madaba (Mosaic Hotel), Petra town (Edom Hotel) and Amman (Liwan Hotel) are comfortable tourist-class properties with en-suite rooms. The five camping nights in Wadi Rum are with Bedouin Trail Camping, using tents with sleeping bags and mats provided. Camp facilities include shared toilet and washing facilities. This is genuine desert camping, not a glamping tent with air conditioning.
What is the Wadi Rum camping experience like?
You spend five consecutive nights camping in Wadi Rum with Bedouin guides. Your tent, sleeping bag and sleeping mat are all provided. Meals at camp are cooked over fire and include traditional Bedouin food. The night skies in Wadi Rum are extraordinary on clear nights. Washing facilities are shared and basic. This is a real wilderness camping experience and the highlight of the tour for most travellers.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
The hotels in Madaba, Petra and Amman have Wi-Fi. In Wadi Rum during the five camping nights, you are in the desert with no Wi-Fi and limited mobile signal. Plan to disconnect for those days.
Can I upgrade or add extra nights?
Extra nights in Amman before or after the tour are available as a paid option. A single room supplement is available for the hotel nights (Madaba, Petra, Amman). Single camping tent arrangements can also be discussed at booking.
What kind of food will we eat?
Hotel breakfasts are included in Madaba, Petra and Amman. During the five camping days, Bedouin cooks prepare all meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) on fire using traditional ingredients: rice, flatbreads, grilled meats, lentil stews, tomatoes, olives, hummus and strong sweet tea. It is simple, fresh and plentiful.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan or gluten-free diets?
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water throughout Jordan. Hotels provide bottled water. On the trail, your guide and Bedouin team manage water supply. Bring a Water-to-Go filter bottle to reduce plastic waste on the camping section.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The small group cap of 12 makes it very sociable, and five nights of shared desert camping with a common physical challenge creates strong group bonds quickly. Many solo travellers do this tour.
Do I have to share a room?
Hotel nights are based on twin share. A single room supplement is available if you prefer your own room in the hotels (Madaba, Petra, Amman). During the camping section, each traveller has their own tent.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
The group has a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12 travellers. The small cap is essential for the Bedouin Trail logistics and keeps the experience intimate. Expect a mix of active travellers drawn to the hiking and those with a particular interest in Jordan's landscape and Nabataean history.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures are available, allowing you to customise the itinerary or travel on dates that suit your schedule. Contact us for details.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The demanding daily hiking distances and remote camping conditions mean this tour is not designed for young children. Families with active teenagers (15 and above) should contact us to discuss suitability based on individual fitness.
Do I need a visa for Jordan?
Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Jordan's ports of entry including Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, or in advance online. Check current requirements and fees on the official Jordan Ministry of Interior website.
Should I get a Jordan Pass?
No. The Jordan Pass is NOT recommended for this tour because entrance fees to both Petra and Wadi Rum are already included in your tour price. Purchasing a Jordan Pass would duplicate a cost you have already paid.
What should I pack?
Trekking boots with ankle support are essential for the Bedouin Trail terrain. Bring lightweight layers for cold desert nights (Wadi Rum temperatures drop significantly after dark), a sun hat, high-factor sunscreen, sunglasses and a good headtorch. All camping equipment including sleeping bag, mat and trekking poles are provided. Pack light as your gear is transported between camps. Modest dress for towns and historical sites.
Are any vaccinations required?
Consult your GP or a travel clinic for current recommendations. Generally recommended for Jordan: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and ensuring routine vaccinations (Tetanus, Diphtheria, MMR) are up to date. No Yellow Fever certificate is required for Jordan.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. Fly into Amman Queen Alia International Airport (AMM). We include arrival and departure airport transfers. We are happy to help with flight suggestions if needed.
What about tipping?
Your tour leader and Bedouin guides work hard and tips are appreciated. Your guide will brief current norms at the start of the tour. Guide tips are separate from the tour price.
Can I add Petra by Night?
Yes. Petra by Night is available as a paid optional extra. It takes place on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and involves walking the candlelit Siq to the Treasury for a Bedouin music performance. Book this in advance to guarantee your place.
Can I add extra nights in Amman?
Yes. Extra nights in Amman before or after the tour are available, staying in the same hotel as the main tour. Ask at booking.
Can I combine this with a longer Jordan or Egypt tour?
Yes. Our related tours include Jordan Express (6 days), Best of Jordan (7 days), and Egypt Express (8 days) which could be taken before or after. Contact us to discuss combining itineraries.
How far ahead should I book?
ANZAC season (April) departures and spring season dates fill quickly for Jordan. Generally, booking 3 to 6 months in advance is recommended. The group cap of 12 means spaces go faster than on larger group tours.
How does booking work?
Reserve online via our website, pay a deposit or hold a reservation. Balance is due 8 weeks before departure. You will receive a confirmation with all pre-departure details.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory on all our tours. Your policy must cover emergency medical treatment, repatriation and the activities involved including desert trekking and mountain hiking to at least 1854m. We recommend World Nomads Travel Insurance.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellation charges apply on a sliding scale based on how close to departure you cancel. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Your funds are financially protected through Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are sold out?
Contact us to join a waitlist for your preferred departure. Private departures on alternative dates are also possible. Our Jordan Express (6 days) and Best of Jordan (7 days) tours offer nearby Jordan availability for non-hiking-focused alternatives.

This was a solo trip for me and it started in Jordan with my guide, Omar Almansi. Omar had such an amazing presence and spirit and I knew it was going to be as amazing as I was dreaming. Little Petra, Petra, camping in Wadi Rum… it was all incredible. Omar knew the significance of people seeing such incredible sites and his guiding did not disappoint! My trip then went in to Egypt. WOW. It’s hard to find the words. The pyramids, tombs, temples, Abu Simbel, all of it was unreal. My guide there, Ayman Kenawy, was unbelievable. His vast knowledge was inspiring but his way of navigating and making the trip memorable for everyone he guided was his true gift! As a solo female traveler people worry about me but I never felt worried at all. Both Omar and Ayman looked out for me and made me feel so welcome. They never steered me wrong. Cairo was much busier than Amman so I was grateful for all the extra effort that made my trip so easy I could focus on the magic all around me. This was a very deep and profound journey for me and it exceeded my expectations.

Couldn’t recommend Enocunters Travel any more highly. We traveled all over Jordan and Egypt and it was seamless. From booking through departure it was a wonderful experience. Our tours guides Yassar and Ayman were professional, knowledgeable and beyond helpful. Our drivers, especially Mohannad in Jordan, but honestly all of them, were safe, considerate and enthusiastic. We saw so many things and made memories to last a life time. Everyone was so tolerant of our crazy amounts of luggage (wasn’t our only trip) and even though we took trains and boats, it wasn’t too much of an issue. I feel like we learned so much that I could teach a class of Egyptian history at this point!

My husband and I previously used Encounters Travel for a vacation to Egypt and Greece and therefore jumped at the opportunity to use them for our journey to Jordan. The expectations bar was high given our previous trips being absolutely amazing and something we wanted to replicate in many areas. Our trip to Jordan delivered on those expectations! From the encyclopedic knowledge of our guide, Omar, who explained the historical significance of various sites encompassing the folklore of the civilizations responsible for such wonders as the temples, amphitheaters around Amman, As-Salt, Jerash, all the way to the remoteness of Wadi Rum. Plus, who could forget the marvels of Petra with its Hellenistic design. The highlights were many. One of which was floating on the waters of the Dead Sea being magical. Omar also kept the entire group updated via What's App.

One improvement or thing to note is the preservation of water in Jordan might mean if you're taking a shower at a particular hour expect it to be freezing cold. During the trip, we were provided bottled water; however, the water was never cold. It would have been nice if the refrigerated unit used to hold the water on the coach bus worked and would keep the water cold.

The expectations for the culinary choices were something my husband and I were particularly thrilled with offerings such as Makloubeh. Nothing could beat the desert item called Kanafeh which was scrumptious and if you're into Baklava, there is no shortage of places to purchase.

Encounters Travel gets both thumbs up for the trips and locations they put together and we will definitely use them for future travel adventures.

I can't say enough about what a great tour this was. I was a solo traveler. I was picked up at the airport and delivered to my hotel. All instructions were detailed. I started in Jordan and added the pre-tour days in Bethlehem with guide Amer. Amer was such a great guide, I was able to enjoy a wonderful lunch in Salt with him. My guide in Jordan, Omar Almansi was so good! He talked about the history, culture, foods, people, land, even his family with such passion. He was marvelous! Each day I was picked up at the hotel and taken to the tours and excursions. All incredible! If you can, request Omar. Omar's a master at taking great iphone pics also! I then flew to Egypt, where a guide picked me up at the airport and then started my tours. My guide was Ahmed. He explained the history and people so well. I was able to enjoy Egypt, from the north end to the south. We toured so much. Took the sleeper train from Cairo to Aswan. That was a fun adventure! It included dinner and a breakfast of rolls and tea. Each of my guides had so much knowledge about the countries and area. I loved this tour! I spoke with Gavin through Encounters Travel. He answered all of my questions, returned all of my emails. The tour was absolutely amazing! Thank you Encounters Travel!

We traveled to Jordan and Egypt! Great experience but what made it unforgettable was our tour guide, Ayman, in Egypt. He was so knowledgeable, educated, funny but overall a nice, good person!! If I was to ever go back to Egypt, I would definitely ask for him as my tour guide!! 5 stars for him!!!
