Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Walking with the Incas tour?
Walking with the Incas is our 19-day deep dive into Peru, running Lima to Lima and covering an extraordinary range: the Ballestas Islands marine reserve, the Nazca Lines, Colca Canyon and its condors, a 4-day Classic Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu, and 3 nights at a jungle lodge in the Tambopata-Candamo Reserve. It is one of the most complete Peru itineraries we run, capped at 14 travellers and led by a fully trained local English-speaking tour leader.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Peru?
Yes, with one honest caveat: the 4-day Inca Trail trek reaches over 4,200m in places, so you need a reasonable fitness base before you arrive. The rest of the itinerary, from the desert oasis of Huacachina to the Amazon jungle lodge, is accessible to most active travellers. If the high-altitude trekking feels daunting, get in touch and we will talk through your fitness level.
What is the difference between this and your other Peru tours?
Walking with the Incas (19 days) is the full Peru experience: coast, desert, canyon, Inca Trail, Amazon. Machu Picchu Calling (15 days) focuses on the highlands and Machu Picchu without the jungle. Mountains to the Lakes (21 days) extends the journey further to include Bolivia and Lake Titicaca. Choose 15 days if you are tight on time; choose 19 if you want the jungle added in; choose 21 if you want to cross into Bolivia.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
We run group departures from April to November. The dry season (April to October) brings the best mountain views and the most reliable Inca Trail conditions. The rainy season (November to April) sees heavier downpours in the Andes but is warm and lush in the jungle. Note that jungle flight times can be subject to change during the rainy season, so leave a buffer day before any international flight home.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Peru tours around. But this is 19 days of coordinated logistics across five distinct regions, including the notoriously permit-limited Classic Inca Trail (we purchase your permit as soon as you book), flights from Cuzco to Puerto Maldonado, a 3-night all-inclusive jungle lodge at Refugio Amazonas, and Machu Picchu entrance. Add up those elements independently and the maths works in our favour quickly.
What is actually included in the price?
Airport arrival transfer in Lima, Ballestas Islands boat tour, overnight desert camp and barbecue at Huacachina, 4-day Classic Inca Trail trek (all meals, guides and porters on trail), Machu Picchu entrance, return train from Machu Picchu to Cuzco, flight from Cuzco to Puerto Maldonado, 4-day jungle trip with all meals, daily excursions, jungle guides, flights to and from the jungle, all accommodation across the tour (hotels, guesthouses, trail camping, jungle lodge), and meals as per itinerary.
What is NOT included, and how much extra should I budget?
You will need to cover entrance fees to sites visited throughout the tour (your guide will brief current amounts), tips for your tour leader and local guides, international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, drinks, and meals not listed in the itinerary. Optional excursions in Colca Canyon (white water rafting, cycling, horse riding, trekking) are paid locally. A single room supplement is available if you prefer your own room throughout.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can hold a reservation online, pay a deposit to secure your spot, or pay in full. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure. Reserve now and pay later is an option if you want to lock in dates while you organise your flights.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Moderately to seriously demanding in places. The 4-day Inca Trail reaches over 4,200m and involves several hours of hiking per day on steep, varied terrain. The rest of the tour involves walking around sites, a dune buggy ride, and canoe trips in the jungle. You should be comfortable walking for several hours in warm conditions and ideally have done some multi-day hiking before the Inca Trail section.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
Many of our Peru travellers are in their 50s, 60s and beyond. Age is not the issue; fitness and altitude tolerance are. The Inca Trail section at over 4,200m will be harder at altitude regardless of age. If you have concerns, speak to us before booking and consider doing a fitness assessment with your GP. The rest of the itinerary is very manageable for active older travellers.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
Some sections of the tour involve very uneven ground (Inca ruins, trail camping, jungle paths) and the Inca Trail is not suitable for anyone with significant mobility restrictions. The altitude on the trail (over 4,200m) also means people with heart conditions or high blood pressure should consult their GP before booking. Be upfront with us and we will help you find the right fit.
How do you handle altitude on the Inca Trail?
The Classic Inca Trail gradually gains altitude, which helps acclimatisation. However, it reaches over 4,200m on the second day (the hardest day). We advise spending time in Cuzco (around 3,400m) beforehand, drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol on arrival, and talking to your GP about altitude medication if you have concerns. Your guide monitors the group and sets a sensible pace.
Is Peru safe to visit?
Yes. The main tourist regions covered on this tour, including Lima, the coastal desert, Cuzco, the Inca Trail and the Tambopata area, are well-established destinations that welcome large numbers of travellers. Our local leaders know the areas, the reputable operators and where to avoid. Stay aware of your surroundings in cities, keep valuables out of sight, and you will have a straightforward trip.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes, and we have solo female travellers on most departures. Travelling with a group and a local leader significantly reduces the variables. In cities, dress modestly, avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas, and keep your wits about you. Your leader will brief you on the local context when you arrive.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your tour leader is your first point of contact and knows local pharmacies, doctors and hospitals throughout the route. In the jungle, your lodge guides and the Refugio Amazonas team are experienced with medical situations. Travel insurance with emergency evacuation cover is compulsory, and you must provide your policy details before joining the tour.
Are there risks in the Amazon jungle I should know about?
The jungle involves insects, including mosquitoes that can carry malaria and dengue, so insect repellent, long sleeves after sunset and mosquito nets (provided at the lodge) are important. Your lodge guides are experienced in the environment. Malaria risk in the Tambopata area is present, so consult your GP or travel clinic about prophylactics before departure.
What is the accommodation actually like?
A mix of simple but comfortable small hotels and guesthouses in Lima, Paracas, Arequipa and Cuzco, plus basic accommodation and camping on the 4-day Inca Trail (tents and sleeping bags can be hired locally), and 3 nights at the Refugio Amazonas jungle lodge near Puerto Maldonado. The lodge has private bathrooms, mosquito nets, and runs on limited electricity. You also spend one night at the Oasis of Huacachina camping under the stars.
What is the jungle lodge like?
Refugio Amazonas Lodge is a river lodge accessed by a 2.5-hour boat ride along the Madre de Dios River. Rooms have private bathrooms and mosquito nets. Electricity runs during limited hours (12:00-13:00 and 17:00-19:00 in standard rooms; superior and premium rooms have more). Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included. The lodge sits at the edge of the Tambopata-Candamo Reserve, so wildlife and insect life are very present.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Hotels in Lima, Paracas, Arequipa and Cuzco generally have Wi-Fi. On the Inca Trail there is no connectivity. At the jungle lodge, Wi-Fi is limited or absent. This is widely considered one of the trip highlights: a genuine digital detox for three nights.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
Yes. Most group tours can be run as private departures with upgraded accommodation options. Contact us and we can discuss what is available at each stop. A single room supplement is also available for those who prefer not to share.
What kind of food will we eat?
A broad range. In Lima expect international and Peruvian restaurants. In Arequipa you can try traditional Peruvian dishes at Hotel La Casa de Mi Abuela's restaurant. On the Inca Trail, all meals are prepared by your cook and porter team, typically hearty hot food. At the jungle lodge, all meals are included and the kitchen caters to a range of dietary needs. The winery visit at Tacama on Day 3 includes a Pisco tasting.
Can you cater for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets?
Vegetarian eating is very manageable throughout Peru, with plenty of rice, potato, legume and vegetable dishes available. The Inca Trail cook can accommodate vegetarian and most dietary requirements given advance notice. Gluten-free can be more challenging in remote areas. Let us know your dietary needs at booking.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water in all towns. In the jungle, the lodge provides drinking water. On the Inca Trail, your cook and porters bring water. A refillable bottle with a filter (we partner with Water-to-Go) is strongly recommended to reduce plastic waste, particularly given the volume of single-use bottles in the Peruvian tourist circuit.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Very good. A solid portion of each departure books solo. The Inca Trail section in particular creates a strong group bond fast. You will share accommodation with another guest of the same gender unless you add the single supplement.
Do I have to share a room?
Solo travellers are paired with another guest of the same gender by default. If no match is available at booking, a single supplement is added but refunded or deducted from your balance if a pairing is arranged later.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups run with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 14. Note that in Peru some sections work as different itinerary combinations, so group composition can change slightly at certain points (for example, some travellers join at Cuzco or depart after Machu Picchu without continuing to the jungle). Your tour leader will keep everything clear.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The Walking with the Incas itinerary can run as a private departure on dates of your choosing, with customisable accommodation. Contact us for a tailored quote.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The Inca Trail has a demanding altitude and physical requirement that makes it unsuitable for young children. Older teens who are fit and altitude-aware can manage it. If you are travelling with a family, a private departure with a modified pace is the best approach. Get in touch and we will be honest about what is realistic for your group.
Do I need a visa for Peru?
Most nationalities (UK, US, Canada, Australia, most of the EU, New Zealand, South Africa) do not need a visa for Peru for stays under 6 months. You will receive an immigration card on arrival; keep it safe as you need it when you depart. Check requirements with your local Peruvian consulate before booking.
What should I pack?
A rucksack or holdall rather than a hard suitcase (roads and conditions make wheeled cases impractical). For the Inca Trail: sturdy broken-in walking boots, warm layers (nights above 3,000m are cold), waterproof jacket, sun hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, and a 4-season sleeping bag (hireable locally if needed). For the jungle: long sleeves, insect repellent with DEET, swimwear, light clothing. Peru uses Type A, B and C sockets at 220V.
Are any vaccinations required?
No vaccinations are legally required for entry to Peru from most countries. Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid. Malaria risk is present in the jungle regions below 2,000m, including Tambopata, so consult your GP or travel clinic about prophylactics. Yellow Fever requirements depend on your country of origin. Always check with a travel clinic 6-8 weeks before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. Your tour starts and ends in Lima, with transfers included on Day 1 and from the airport on Day 19. Lima airport code is LIM. We are happy to suggest flights if you ask.
What about tipping?
Tipping is common in Peru as a sign of appreciation. Your guide can suggest appropriate current amounts for your tour leader, drivers, Inca Trail porters (who are employed following IPPG guidelines) and jungle guides. Tips are separate from the tour price and at your discretion.
How much luggage can I bring?
Use a rucksack or soft holdall, ideally 50-80 litres. Large rigid suitcases are impractical on this tour. On the Inca Trail your porters carry your main bag; you carry a daypack on the trail. You can leave a bag locked in your pre-trek Cuzco hotel. Domestic flight luggage limits are typically 15kg, so aim for no more than 15kg total if your itinerary includes any domestic flights.
Can I add an extra day in Lima?
Yes. A pre-tour extra day in Lima is available as an option, staying at the same Hotel Buena Vista in Miraflores. Post-tour extra days are also available. Good for jet lag recovery or exploring Lima's world-class food scene before the tour starts.
Can I try activities in Colca Canyon?
The tour includes 4 days in and around Colca Canyon. Optional activities arranged locally include white water rafting, cycling, horse riding and trekking. Your tour leader can assist with bookings. These are paid locally and not included in the tour price.
What if I want an alternative to the Classic Inca Trail?
If the Classic Trail is unavailable (it has a limited daily permit quota), we can arrange the Lares Trail at no extra charge (minimum 2 people). The Salkantay Trail is also available. If you prefer not to trek at all, a train-only option to Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu is available, which gives you two extra nights in Cuzco. Let us know your preference at the time of booking.
Can I climb Huayna Picchu at Machu Picchu?
Yes, if permits are available. Huayna Picchu permits are limited to 400 per day and sell out well in advance. The ascent is steep and takes around an hour each way. Request this add-on through your account as early as possible. Permits are non-refundable once purchased and are linked to your passport details.
Can I combine this with Bolivia?
Bolivian Encounters (15 days) runs as a companion itinerary. Mountains to the Lakes (21 days) is a Peru and Bolivia combined option. If you want to continue from Lima into Bolivia, speak to us about the best way to connect the two trips.
How far ahead should I book?
The Inca Trail Classic permit is the main constraint: permits are limited, and once purchased they are non-refundable and non-transferable. We book permits immediately after your reservation is confirmed. Popular departure months (June-September) fill up well ahead. The earlier you book, the better your chances of securing your preferred dates.
How does booking work?
Reserve online via the Dates and Prices tab on the tour page. Pay a deposit, pay in full, or hold a reservation. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure. We will contact you after booking to confirm permit details. Your Inca Trail permit is linked to your passport so make sure you enter your passport details accurately.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, it is compulsory. Your policy must cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation, repatriation, and trip cancellation. Given the jungle section and the altitude on the Inca Trail, make sure your policy covers adventure activities and the maximum altitude you will reach. We partner with World Nomads, who cover over 150 adventure activities.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations made well ahead of departure qualify for a refund of payments made. Closer-in cancellations attract fees on a sliding scale. Note that Inca Trail permits are non-refundable once purchased regardless of cancellation timing. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Encounters Travel is UK-registered with financial protection via Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are already sold out?
Get in touch. We can add you to a waitlist, run the tour as a private departure on different dates, or suggest Machu Picchu Calling (15 days) or Mountains to the Lakes (21 days) if availability is better on those itineraries.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Accommodation

We use good quality small & simple hotels & guesthouses on this tour. Tours visiting the Oasis of Huacachina and the Inca trail trek will also include four nights camping.

Accommodation is based on dorm, twin, triple or double en-suite rooms. We will endeavour to give all couples a private double room. Single travellers may choose to pay a single room supplement to guarantee themselves a single room throughout the tour. Alternatively, they may choose to share a room with one or two other travellers of the same sex. If there are no other single travellers available for you to pair up with at the time of your booking, then we will need to add the single supplement to your tour price, but will refund this or deduct it from your balance payment if we are able to pair you up later on.

Please be aware that hotels in Peru can suffer from common problems such as electrical failure, plumbing faults and other technical difficulties and hot water may occasionally be temperamental if a lot of people are using the showers at the same time. This is a possibility throughout all classes of hotels.

On the Classic Inca trail tents are provided and sleeping bags can be hired locally if you don't want to bring your own. The Jungle section includes local guides, mosquito nets, all accommodation, food and drinking water.
