Upon arrival at Nairobi airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to relax and recover from your flight.
Today we will begin our safari adventure. We have a morning drive north towards the Kenyan highlands. We will pass through tea and coffee plantations, farms and small-holdings. Time permitting, we may also have the opportunity to visit East Africa's largest market at Karatina. After lunch at the Aberdare Country club we drive deep into the forests of the Aberdare mountains, where we have an overnight stay at the Ark. Here, you can relax on the open-air decks while observing the wildlife gathering to drink at the floodlit watering hole below.
Today begins with a morning drive over the shoulder of Mount Kenya and then on to the arid bush lands of Samburu - a seemingly inhospitable area which is brought to life by the Uaso Nyiro river on which the wildlife depend. We have lunch and afternoon game drives around Samburu before spending the evening at Samburu Intrepids Club which overlooks the river.
We have a full day at Samburu today where you may encounter Lions, Elephants, Oryx, Gerenuk, Reticulated Giraffe, Kudu and maybe even Hippo along the river trail. Tonight will be spent at the Samburu Intrepids club.
This morning we drive back to the highlands for a 2-night stay at the deluxe Mount Kenya Safari Club, which is situated on the lower slopes of Mount Kenya. The hotel offers splendid views of the twin peaks when the weather is fine. The club was developed from a celebrity private home into an exclusive club by actor William Holden and two friends in the 1960's. It was subsequently owned by some rather less salubrious characters before being recently restored to full glory by the Fairmont Hotels group. Here you can choose from a wide range of rooms, suites and cottages.
We have a full day at Mount Kenya today where you can relax by the heated pool or enjoy the many facilities available at the club such as golf, croquet, bowling, table-tennis or the health club. For those looking for a little more activitiy then we have a number of activities available today such as visiting an animal orphanage, taking a guided walk through the forest reserve, bird-watching walks, horse-riding, mountain biking, fly fishing and also game drives in the nearby Sweetwaters private reserve (entrance fees to be paid locally). This evening will also be spent at the Mount Kenya Safari club.
After breakfast we take a short flight across the Rift Valley into Kenya's finest wildlife reserve, the Masai Mara. The remainder of today will be spent enjoying game drives around this famous reserve. The next two evenings will be spent at the deluxe Mara Safari Club which overlooks a wide bend on the Mara river where Hippo can often be seen from the bar and lounge terrace.
The whole of today will be spent viewing game in the Mara. Elephant and Buffalo abound in the riverine forests, while out on the grasslands Impala and Thompson's gazelle can be seen together with their attendant predators such as Lion, Cheetah, Hyena and Jackal. The northern part of the Mara conservation area where the Mara Safari Club is situated has excellent game viewing throughout the year and is one of the best places to see Cheetah. Lesser known species such as Topi, Hartebeest, Waterbuck, Eland and many small mammals create a kaleidoscopic picture of wildlife.
After breakfast we transfer to the airstrip for a short flight to Mombasa. After arriving in Mombasa we will transfer to the coast to one of the many coastal resorts. Mombasa's coast offers a wide range of accommodation options from small luxury properties to large all inclusive resorts. We have based this itinerary on a stay at the idyllic Pinewood Village resort in Galu. Galu is relatively off the beaten track however it is all the better for that! This small, informal hotel offers good facilities including an excellent watersports centre, tennis, squash and a games room. The hotel offers suites as an upgrade where you will have your own chef who will serve dinner on your own private terrace. We have 3 nights beside the Indian Ocean.
Today is a full day spent at your beach resort. You can relax and unwind on the beach and enjoy the warm waters of the Indian Ocean or take part in one of the many options available in and around the resort.
