Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Israel Uncovered tour?
Israel Uncovered is an 8-day private tour from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem that takes you through the full breadth of the Holy Land at your own pace. Starting on the Mediterranean coast at Jaffa and the Grand Beach Hotel in Tel Aviv, you'll travel north through Caesarea, Haifa's Baha'i Gardens, Acre, the Sea of Galilee and Capernaum, Nazareth and the Jordan River Baptism Site, south through Beth Shean and Jericho, to the Dead Sea and the ancient stones of Jerusalem for the final three nights at the Grand Court Hotel. It's a private itinerary, so the minimum group size is 1.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Israel?
It's designed for first-timers. The route is a logical north-to-south sweep through all the places most visitors want to see, ending in Jerusalem. The 4-star hotels are well-located and the private format means you can linger where you choose.
What makes this a private tour rather than a group tour?
Israel Uncovered is operated as a private departure: the tour runs for your party only, with your own private guide and vehicle. You set the pace, and the itinerary can be adjusted to your interests. There is no minimum group size; solo travellers are welcome.
What's the best time of year to visit Israel?
Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons: mild temperatures, longer daylight hours and manageable crowds. Summer (June to August) is hot, particularly in the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea area. Winter is cool in Jerusalem but can be pleasant for city sightseeing. The tour runs year-round.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
As a private tour, the guide and private vehicle are dedicated entirely to your group throughout 8 days. You stay in 4-star hotels in Tel Aviv (Grand Beach Hotel), the Galilee (Kibbutz Lavi), and Jerusalem (Grand Court Hotel). Seven breakfasts are included, and all the logistics, from the Jordan River Baptism Site to Yad Vashem, are handled for you. Private touring in the region costs what it costs because of the expertise involved.
What's actually included in the price?
Included are 7 nights in 4-star hotels (Grand Beach Hotel Tel Aviv, Kibbutz Lavi Galilee, Grand Court Hotel Jerusalem), 7 breakfasts, a private English-speaking guide throughout, private air-conditioned vehicle for all transport, and airport transfers.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included are international flights, the ETA-IL electronic travel authorisation fee, travel insurance, lunches and dinners, drinks, entrance fees to sites, personal spending and guide/driver tips. Your guide will advise on current entrance fee costs and tipping at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Secure your place with a deposit or use the reserve-now-pay-later option. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
This is a sightseeing tour requiring moderate walking: exploring Old Jerusalem, the Mount of Olives, Masada-style sites and the Galilee area all involve steps and uneven ground. The Old City of Jerusalem in particular is cobblestoned throughout and has significant elevation changes. Overall, the tour is accessible to most travellers of reasonable fitness.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
As a private tour, the pace is entirely your own. Older travellers often appreciate Israel Uncovered precisely because there is no group to keep up with. The 4-star hotels are comfortable throughout. The main physical consideration is walking on cobblestones and steps in Jerusalem and the ancient sites.
What if I have mobility issues?
Jerusalem's Old City is challenging for anyone with significant mobility limitations: the streets are uneven cobblestones with many steps. Other sites like Caesarea, the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea are more accessible. If you have specific mobility concerns, contact us to discuss what is manageable and what alternatives exist.
Is Israel safe to visit right now?
The political situation in the region changes over time, and the advice varies by area. We strongly recommend checking the current government travel advisory for your home country before booking and before departure. The itinerary on this tour stays within Israel's main tourism circuit. Your guide will be your most important source of local, current information.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Israel has a well-developed tourism infrastructure and is generally safe for solo women travellers in the main cities and tourist areas. As a private tour with a dedicated guide, you have a trusted companion throughout. Check current government advice before travel.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Israel has excellent medical facilities, and this is one of the most medically advanced countries in the region. Your guide can direct you to care. Travel insurance with medical cover is compulsory.
What's the accommodation actually like?
All three hotels on the tour are 4-star. In Tel Aviv you stay at the Grand Beach Hotel, a seafront hotel in central Tel Aviv. In the Galilee you stay at Kibbutz Lavi, an unusual experience: a working kibbutz hotel with peaceful grounds. In Jerusalem you stay at the Grand Court Hotel for three nights, a large 4-star hotel in a central location near the Old City.
What's the Kibbutz Lavi hotel like?
Kibbutz Lavi is a working kibbutz that has been operating a hotel for decades. The accommodation is comfortable and en-suite, set in peaceful agricultural surroundings in the Galilee hills. It's a distinctly Israeli experience that gives a sense of the kibbutz movement and its history, and it's a comfortable break from city hotels between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
All three hotels have Wi-Fi. Israel has excellent mobile and internet connectivity throughout the country.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
As a private tour, accommodation upgrades can be arranged at the time of booking. Contact us to discuss options.
What kind of food will we eat?
Israeli food is one of the most vibrant culinary scenes in the Middle East: Tel Aviv's restaurant culture is world-class, with hummus, shakshuka, falafel, fresh mezze and superb seafood. The Dead Sea area and the Galilee offer regional Israeli and Arabic cuisine. Jerusalem's Old City has a wide mix of cuisines across its Jewish, Muslim and Christian quarters.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water in Israel is safe to drink throughout the country. It is one of few countries in the region where this is the case. However, if you prefer filtered water, a Water-to-Go bottle is still a practical travelling companion.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Excellent for solo travellers. Minimum group size is 1, so you don't need to wait for others. You get a dedicated guide and private vehicle from the first day, and the itinerary is entirely focused on your preferences.
Do I have to share a room?
As a private tour, all rooms are for your party. Solo travellers pay the single supplement for a private room throughout.
What's the group size?
Minimum 1, no maximum. This is a private tour, so you travel with your own group and guide. The experience is tailored entirely to your party.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
Older children and teenagers with an interest in history and religion would enjoy the tour. The mix of ancient archaeology, Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and religious sites is better suited to teenagers than young children. Contact us to discuss the itinerary for your family's ages.
Do I need a visa for Israel?
All visitors to Israel must obtain an ETA-IL (Electronic Travel Authorisation for Israel) before departure. This is the online system that replaced the previous entry stamp arrangements. Check the official Israeli Population and Immigration Authority website for current requirements and fees for your nationality.
What should I pack?
Modest dress is required at religious sites throughout the route: cover shoulders and knees at churches, mosques, synagogues and at Yad Vashem. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for Jerusalem's cobblestones. Dead Sea swimwear (old swimwear is fine, as the salt will affect fabric). Layers for Jerusalem evenings, which can be cool. Israel uses two-round-prong sockets at 230V.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations for Israel include Hepatitis A and Poliomyelitis. No malaria risk. Check current guidance from your GP or travel clinic before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. International flights are not included. Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) in Tel Aviv is the main international gateway. Airport transfers are included in the tour price.
What about tipping?
Tipping is customary in Israel for guides and drivers. Your guide will advise on appropriate amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I float in the Dead Sea?
The itinerary includes time at the Dead Sea. Whether you want to float (yes, you genuinely float), use the famous black mud, or simply see the landscape, this stop is one of the tour's highlights. Bring old swimwear and sandals.
Can I visit Yad Vashem?
Yes. The Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and museum in Jerusalem is included in the itinerary. It is one of the world's most important and moving memorial institutions, and the tour allocates proper time for your visit.
Can I extend the tour to include more time in Jerusalem?
As a private tour, the itinerary is flexible. If you want to spend more time in Jerusalem, contact us and we can adjust the schedule and accommodation accordingly.
How far ahead should I book?
Israel Uncovered runs as a private tour, so availability is generally good. That said, booking 6-8 weeks ahead is advisable to allow time for the ETA-IL application and any pre-departure preparations.
How does booking work?
Reserve online through the Dates & Prices tab or contact us directly for a private departure quote. Pay a deposit or use the reserve-now-pay-later option. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Travel insurance is compulsory on all Encounters Travel tours and must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation. World Nomads Travel Insurance covers over 150 adventure activities.
What's your cancellation policy?
Cancellation charges apply on a sliding scale depending on how far in advance you cancel. Full details are in the booking conditions. All bookings are financially protected through Trust My Travel, a UK-registered financial protection scheme.
What if I need to change my dates?
As a private tour, date changes are generally more flexible than group departures. Contact us as early as possible and we'll do our best to accommodate changes within the booking conditions.

My husband and I previously used Encounters Travel for a vacation to Egypt and Greece and therefore jumped at the opportunity to use them for our journey to Jordan. The expectations bar was high given our previous trips being absolutely amazing and something we wanted to replicate in many areas. Our trip to Jordan delivered on those expectations! From the encyclopedic knowledge of our guide, Omar, who explained the historical significance of various sites encompassing the folklore of the civilizations responsible for such wonders as the temples, amphitheaters around Amman, As-Salt, Jerash, all the way to the remoteness of Wadi Rum. Plus, who could forget the marvels of Petra with its Hellenistic design. The highlights were many. One of which was floating on the waters of the Dead Sea being magical. Omar also kept the entire group updated via What's App.

One improvement or thing to note is the preservation of water in Jordan might mean if you're taking a shower at a particular hour expect it to be freezing cold. During the trip, we were provided bottled water; however, the water was never cold. It would have been nice if the refrigerated unit used to hold the water on the coach bus worked and would keep the water cold.

The expectations for the culinary choices were something my husband and I were particularly thrilled with offerings such as Makloubeh. Nothing could beat the desert item called Kanafeh which was scrumptious and if you're into Baklava, there is no shortage of places to purchase.

Encounters Travel gets both thumbs up for the trips and locations they put together and we will definitely use them for future travel adventures.

I have had the pleasure of experiencing many of the Mayan, Greek and Roman architectural monuments around the world. So I was quite keen on experiencing first-hand the Egyptian treasures. No photo or HD documentary can do justice to what you witness in Cairo, Luxor or Aswan! I convinced two good friends to tag along for this journey (we also added Israel with a very easy Air Sinai 45 minute flight to Tel Aviv!) and had the time of our lives. Mind you---this is not a "sit in the sun trip" ---this is getting up early to hop on early flights at the airport or getting to the hot air balloon launching pads before the sun rises----its a true Egyptian ADVENTURE. Comfy sneaks are imperative because there is lots of rigorous walking over uneven terrain in very warm conditions. Only casual wardrobe is necessary. Encounters made is all very easy ---with very organized/professional transfer agents on the ground, hotels and guides. We NEVER felt unsafe or uncomfortable. The Egyptian people have an amazing twinkle in their eye and can be unabashedly warm-hearted. For most of our trip we had Housam as our trusted guide----he is very knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor----so much fun to be in his company. There is a lot of history to be covered on this trip---and he makes it an enjoyable lesson. Jump at the chance to take advantage of this marvelous journey thru Encounters!----now with all that said----please keep the following in mind:
- We visited in early October and it was still over 100 degrees on some days
- Drinks LOTS of water---I had a kidney stone attack--which can come from dehydration----Experiencing the local hospital was another "adventure" ---Housam and the doctors at Aswan's Mission Hospital were TERRIFIC. Just keep in mind that the local ambulances don't have any equipment on them---so get doctor's care first!
- Le Meridian Hotel--best to ask for the upgrade room. Spa services great and inexpensive. The DOLLAR goes very far in Egypt!
- TIPPING is part of the culture--take this very seriously and keep small bills ALWAYS handy--ATM's only dispense big bills---and difficult to find ATM that would allow credit cards.
- The local merchants can BADGER you to death--you MUST not give them any attention---which can be sometimes difficult to do.
-If at all possible--I would try to research hieroglyphics---to have some basic knowledge--it would so increase your interpretative skills at the historic sites.
- Luxor's Winter Palace Hotel and Aswan's Cataract Hotel (both Sofitel properties) were great places for lunch and wonderful old world glamorous hospitality.

My friend and I looked for package tours to Israel online, but I am not very confident booking anything online unless I have a local phone number to call and speak to a person. We finally found our tour with a travel agent who had a number for me to be able to speak to a person and in this way feel assured that the company was legitimized. I spoke to Mariska at Encounters Travel and she was very helpful so I booked the 8 day package tour called Fantastic Israel with Encounters Travel only 2 weeks before I was due to travel with my friend. The tour itself was perfect. We When we arrived at the airport a lot of flights had arrived at the same so we got stuck for almost 2 hours in the passport control, but the person picking us up at the airport was very understanding. We arrived at our first hotel and we were checked in straight away. The food at all the different hotels was very nice, buffets for breakfast and dinner all inclusive. We were 9 people in the small group, all friendly and fun loving people each with their own personality and our Jewish guide Meir, who knew a lot about all the sites we saw. He was neutral in his comments and gave us good sound facts about Israel in general. All of us agreed that we felt like a big family closely bonded even with our tour guide who did not feel like a tour guide but like a friend. I highly recommend Encounters Travel and their 8 day Fantastic Israel tour as a small group tour. Thumps up from Me. Susanne Hultman, London, UK

I loved Egypt! !! This is the most interesting country I've ever been. Everything is so amazing. The tour guides did everything in their power to make everyone in my group, happy. We felt so safe and cared by them. I didn't have to think about anything, and I saw and did so much in 10 days. I learned so much about the acient and modern culture, and about the Egyptians life. The Muslims and Cristian are so united. There, religion brings people together. They are so peaceful and happy. They love tourists. We were so well treated, that we didn't want to come back so soon. I never felt so safe in my entire life. Everything is so different then what the media want us to see. I encourage everyone to go to Egypt to see and feel all the wonder this amazing country has to show and offer to the world. Beautiful people! I'm surprised and amazed by everything. I would like to give a special thanks to our dear tour guide that stayed with us the most and made our journey, the best one ever. This soul is a very special one, Sheriffhassan Mohamed. The best guide ever, his knowledge, kindness, and a great sense of humor, was beyond my expectations. Also Kalifa Mohamed, and Hassan were amazing to us. I'll definitely travel with Encounters again. Next trip is to Jordan, Israel, and Egypt again. Thank you , I feel blessed. This unforgettable experience is going to last even in the after life. I left my heart in Egypt, and some day I'll definitely go back.

We visited so many places including historical sites. We had a wonderful time. I will definately book my next trip with Travel Encounters.
