Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Machame Route and why is it popular?
The Machame Route is known as the 'whiskey' route on Kilimanjaro. It is the second most popular route on the mountain and is highly regarded for its scenic variety. Unlike the shorter Marangu route, Machame takes you around approximately 40 km of terrain, circling halfway around the mountain and offering spectacular views from multiple angles.
How long does this trek take?
The trek is 8 days in total, with 6 days on the mountain and 2 days in Moshi (arrival and departure). The climb itself follows the Machame route over 6 days, giving more time for acclimatisation than shorter routes.
What is the summit altitude and route?
The summit is Uhuru Peak at 5895m, the highest point in Africa. From Barafu camp at 4600m, you begin the ascent in the early hours and reach Stella Point at 5745m before continuing to the summit. After reaching the top, you descend to Mweka Camp and then back to Moshi.
Where does the trek start and finish?
The trek starts and ends in Moshi, Tanzania. You arrive in Moshi on Day 1 and overnight at the Springlands hotel. After the descent, you return to the Springlands hotel on Day 7 before departure the following morning.
What type of accommodation is used on the mountain?
All trekkers on the Machame Route sleep in tents throughout the climb. Tents are included in the tour price. Meals are served in a dinner tent or outside, depending on conditions.
What is the group size for this trek?
This is a private tour with a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 12 people. You can book as a solo traveller and the tour will be run for you. Larger groups are also accommodated up to the 12-person cap.
Is there an optional extra day on the mountain?
Yes. On Day 4, at Barranco camp, there is the option to add an extra day on the mountain for additional acclimatisation. This extra day includes a local hike and overnight at Karanga camp, and can increase your chances of reaching the summit.
What is included in the tour price?
Included are all accommodation and meals as detailed in the itinerary (including taxes and service charges), transfers by minibus or car, a cook, a guide and porters for the entire climb, three meals a day on the mountain, tea and coffee, national park entry fees, hut and camp fees, rescue fees, and Flying Doctor insurance cover.
What is not included in the price?
Not included are your international flights, visas, personal travel insurance, optional excursions and activities, drinks (soft drinks, mineral water and alcoholic beverages), tips, laundry and other personal expenses, and equipment hire.
Is Flying Doctor cover included?
Yes. Flying Doctor insurance cover is included in the tour price. This provides emergency medical evacuation cover while you are on the mountain, which is an important safeguard given the remote conditions at altitude.
Are park entrance fees included?
Yes. All national park entry fees and camp fees are included in the tour price.
Is tipping included?
Tips for the guide, cook, and porters are not included. Tipping is an important part of the team's income. Your guide will be able to advise on appropriate amounts for the Kilimanjaro team.
How fit do I need to be for the Machame Route?
The Machame Route is described as suitable for physically fit people with some hiking experience. It is a challenging multi-day climb to nearly 5900m and requires good cardiovascular fitness and the ability to walk for several hours each day on steep and varied terrain. You do not need technical mountaineering skills, but you should have solid general fitness.
What altitude will I be trekking at?
The route reaches a maximum altitude of 5895m at Uhuru Peak. You will also pass through Stella Point at 5745m. Camp altitudes range from 3100m at Machame Hut on Day 2 up to 4600m at Barafu before the summit push.
What is the summit day like?
Summit day starts very early in the morning, typically around midnight. The ascent to the summit takes approximately 6 hours, and the descent back to Mweka camp takes around 5 hours. It is about 11 hours of walking in total and is the hardest day of the trek.
Can I do this trek if I have never climbed at altitude before?
Many trekkers on Kilimanjaro are doing their first high-altitude climb. The 6-day Machame itinerary is designed to allow gradual acclimatisation, and the route's profile (climb high, sleep lower on Day 4) helps the body adjust. That said, altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of fitness. Consult your doctor before booking if you have concerns.
What happens if I cannot reach the summit?
Not everyone who attempts Kilimanjaro reaches the summit. If you develop severe altitude sickness or are unable to continue, your guide will turn you around and assist your descent to a safe altitude. Your health and safety always take priority over reaching the top.
Is travel insurance required?
Yes. Personal travel insurance is mandatory for this trek. The tour includes Flying Doctor cover, but your own policy must also cover you for high-altitude trekking, medical emergencies, and repatriation. Check the fine print of any policy to confirm altitude coverage.
Are porters treated ethically on this tour?
All porters are employed and equipped following guidelines set by the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG). This covers their welfare, working conditions, and equipment standards.
What vaccinations are recommended for Tanzania?
Recommended additional vaccinations for Tanzania include Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid. A Yellow Fever certificate is required if you are arriving from or have transited through an infected area. Malaria prophylactics are also strongly advised. Consult your GP or a travel clinic for current, personalised advice before departure.
Where do I stay at the start and end of the trek?
You stay at the Springlands Hotel in Moshi on both the arrival night (Day 1) and the night after returning from the mountain (Day 7). Springlands is a well-known trekker base hotel.
What is the tent accommodation like on the mountain?
All tents are provided and transported by porters. You sleep in your own tent at each campsite. Meals are served in a communal dinner tent. Facilities at the campsites are basic, with basic toilet facilities and no running water. Wet wipes and hand sanitiser are your best friends on the mountain.
Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?
Trekking equipment including a sleeping bag is not listed as included, so you will need to arrange your own or hire it locally. Kilimanjaro nights can be very cold, particularly at the higher camps, so a sleeping bag rated to minus 10 degrees Celsius or lower is recommended. Check the equipment notes when you book.
Are meals provided on the mountain?
Yes. Three meals a day are provided and prepared by your cook throughout the climb. Tea and coffee are also included. Soft drinks, mineral water and alcoholic drinks are not included and must be purchased locally if you want them.
Can vegetarians or those with dietary requirements be catered for?
Yes. If you have specific dietary requirements, let us know at the time of booking. Your cook will be briefed. The mountain diet is typically carbohydrate-rich to sustain energy at altitude.
Is water safe to drink on the mountain?
Stream and river water should not be drunk untreated. Your team will provide boiled water for drinking, or you can bring purification tablets or a filter. Staying well hydrated is one of the key factors in acclimatisation and summit success.
Can I book this trek as a solo traveller?
Yes. This is a private tour with a minimum of 1 person, so solo bookings are fully accommodated. You will have your own guide and porter team for the climb.
Who typically does this trek?
Trekkers on the Machame Route tend to be people with some hiking experience who want a challenging but achievable African adventure. The route attracts a mix of ages and nationalities. Groups tend to be small, making for a more personal experience with the mountain crew.
What visa do I need for Tanzania?
Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival or apply in advance online. Requirements and fees vary by passport. Check with the Tanzanian embassy or consulate well in advance of your trip. Visa costs are not included in the tour price.
What currency is used in Tanzania?
The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). US Dollars are widely accepted and are the preferred hard currency for exchange. Euros and Sterling are also accepted at most exchange points. Credit cards are available in larger cities but not widely used outside them. Bring sufficient cash for your trip.
What should I pack for the Machame Route?
Key items include sturdy waterproof hiking boots, warm and waterproof layered clothing, sun protection, a headlamp with spare batteries, trekking poles, and personal toiletries. Kilimanjaro experiences a wide range of temperatures, from warm in the lower rainforest to well below freezing near the summit. Packing layers is essential.
What electrical sockets are used in Tanzania?
Sockets are three rectangular-pronged at 220 volts, the same as British BS-1363 sockets. All hotel rooms have electrical sockets for recharging devices. If you have US appliances running at 110 volts, you will need a voltage converter as well as a plug adapter.
Is there an option to add extra acclimatisation time?
Yes. On Day 4, an optional extra day at Karanga camp can be added for additional acclimatisation. This extra night on the mountain includes a day hike and is strongly recommended if you have any concerns about your acclimatisation.
Can I extend my time in Tanzania after the trek?
Yes. Encounters Travel can help you add a Tanzania safari, a Zanzibar beach extension, or other activities to your trip. Contact us to discuss options and pricing for any extensions around your trek.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. International Flights

We want to give you as much flexibility as possible when it comes to booking your holiday with us. So, to take account of people with varying travel plans, we don’t include your international flights in the main tour price. We are however very happy to suggest flights to go with the tour. Please contact us with your preferred dates and departure airport and we’ll give you a selection of airlines, times and fares to choose from.

On our Tanzania Small Group Tours, airport transfers are not included in the price of the tour, but are available on a request basis.

We do also sometimes advertise flight inclusive packages from selected airports. Where these are shown on our website, prices are correct at the time of quoting, but are subject to continued availability of the fare used. Prices will be reconfirmed at the time of booking, and we will also provide the flight times and airline details before tickets are issued.
Flight inclusive prices are based on the cheapest Economy ticket class available which is generally non-refundable and non-changeable unless the flight is cancelled for reasons such as Covid-19, in which case the airlines are more flexible. More flexible ticket options, as well as Premium Economy and Business Class tickets are available on request for an additional supplement. Any changes made to flight inclusive bookings will be subject to the airline rules on your ticket.

Flight CO2 Emissions:

Traveling by air is an amazing way to explore the world, but flights also contribute to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that impact the environment. By considering the airline's CO2 emissions when you choose your flight, you can help minimize your travel footprint.

When selecting your international flights and airline, we do therefore recommend that you try and also take into account the flight CO2 emissions. Some airlines and flight search websites (eg. Google Flights, Skyscanner) do publish this information, so you can compare between your flight options and make an informed decision. Thankfully, many airlines are working towards sustainability efforts, and choosing a greener option allows you to contribute to positive change while still enjoying your incredible adventure.
