Why book the Southern India Uncovered tour?
Southern India Uncovered is a 13-day small-group journey from Chennai to Kochi that takes you through Tamil Nadu and Kerala in a way that very few group tours manage. You visit the UNESCO Pallava dynasty shore temple at Mahabalipuram, the French colonial quarter of Pondicherry, the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Tanjore (another UNESCO site built by the Chola dynasty), and ancient Madurai with its towering Meenakshi Amman Temple and evening aarti ceremony. Then Kerala unfolds: tea plantations in Munnar, a boat ride on Lake Periyar in Thekkady, a traditional Shikara boat through the backwater canals of Kumarakom, and an overnight stay on a deluxe air-conditioned houseboat (Kettuvallam) through the Kerala backwaters. Groups are capped at 12.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to India?
Yes, southern India is a gentler and less overwhelming introduction to India than the north. The pace is comfortable, the food is spectacular, the religious and cultural sites are extraordinary but not as frenetic as Delhi or Varanasi. The Kerala section in particular is one of the most serene travel experiences in the country.
What is the difference between this and your other south India tours?
Two related tours share this itinerary. Temples and Spices follows the same Tamil Nadu section (Chennai to Madurai) but instead of continuing to Kerala, returns from Madurai to Chennai by train. Kerala Backwaters and Hill Stations starts and ends in Kochi, skips Tamil Nadu entirely, and includes an extra 2 nights in Kochi with a city tour. Southern India Uncovered is the complete journey that combines both halves.
What is the best time of year to do Southern India Uncovered?
November to March is the most comfortable, with cooler mornings and evenings and mostly sunny days. The really hot period is March to June, when temperatures inland can become uncomfortable. The south-west monsoon brings rain to Kerala from June to September. The north-east monsoon affects Tamil Nadu's east coast (Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry) between October and December. The tour runs year-round.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper India tours floating around. Southern India Uncovered includes 3 to 5-star hotels throughout, a full night on a deluxe air-conditioned Kettuvallam houseboat (all meals included on board), entrance fees to all listed sightseeing, specialist local guides at each destination, a visit to the Mohanam Cultural Centre (a community arts centre in Auroville), and all transport in private AC vehicles. The houseboat experience alone is a significant inclusion.
What is actually included in the price?
All accommodation in 3 to 5-star hotels and a deluxe AC houseboat, all transport in private AC vehicles, 24-hour airport arrival and departure service (Chennai in, Kochi out), sightseeing and activities as per the itinerary including the Mahabalipuram shore temple, Mohanam Cultural Centre, Brihadeeswarar Temple, Meenakshi Amman Temple, Munnar market and tea plantation, Lake Periyar boat ride, Shikara backwater ride in Kumarakom, and overnight houseboat. Entrance fees for included sightseeing, services of a local tour leader and specialist local guides, and meals as listed (12 breakfasts, 1 lunch, 1 dinner on the houseboat).
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, visa fees, travel insurance, tips, meals not listed in the itinerary, drinks, snacks and personal expenses are not included. You should budget for lunches throughout the tour, and for drinks and personal shopping. India offers excellent value for eating out and shopping. Tipping for local guides and your driver is expected and your guide will provide current guidance.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit, use our reserve-now-pay-later option, or pay in full at booking. Balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is Southern India Uncovered?
This is a moderate-pace sightseeing and cultural tour. You will walk around temples and monuments for several hours each day, occasionally on uneven stone surfaces or through narrow temple corridors. The houseboat, Shikara ride and Periyar boat ride are all seated. There is no trekking or strenuous hiking.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
There is no upper age limit. The pace is comfortable and the itinerary is designed around sightseeing rather than physical activity. If you have specific mobility concerns, the Meenakshi Amman Temple and Brihadeeswarar Temple involve walking through large temple complexes on stone floors, which are manageable for most travellers.
What if I have mobility issues?
The main temples in this itinerary are large, busy religious complexes with stone floors, some steps, and occasional uneven ground. All are at low altitude (sea level to about 1,600m in Munnar). Contact us if you have specific concerns and we can advise on which parts of the itinerary present challenges.
Is India safe to visit?
Southern India is generally considered one of the calmer and more relaxed regions of India for visitors. Tamil Nadu and Kerala both have well-established tourism infrastructure. Standard precautions apply: keep valuables secure, follow your guide's advice, and check official government travel advisories before departure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Dress modestly throughout (loose-fitting clothes, arms and legs covered in temples and public areas). Southern India is more relaxed than some northern states, but modest dress significantly reduces unwanted attention. On a guided group tour you always have company. The Kerala section in particular (Munnar, Thekkady, backwaters) is very relaxed and tourist-friendly.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide carries basic first aid and can direct you to reputable medical facilities. Chennai and Kochi both have excellent private hospitals. India has generally good availability of medical care in cities. First aid and medication are readily available locally. Travel insurance is compulsory and must cover emergency medical treatment and repatriation.
What is the accommodation actually like?
Hotels range from 3 to 5-star across the tour. In the cities (Chennai, Pondicherry, Tanjore, Madurai) you stay in comfortable mid-range hotels with en-suite bathrooms and AC. In Munnar and Thekkady you are in hill-station hotels with beautiful views. At Kumarakom you stay near the backwaters before boarding the houseboat. The houseboat itself is a deluxe AC Kettuvallam with private en-suite cabins and a sun deck.
What is the Kerala houseboat like?
The Kettuvallam is a traditional Kerala houseboat converted into a floating retreat. Originally built to carry cargo without a single nail (planks tied with coir rope and sealed with cashew resin), today's houseboats are fully modern inside. Your deluxe houseboat has private air-conditioned en-suite cabins, a sun deck, an onboard cook who prepares all meals, and a captain who navigates through the backwater canals. You fall asleep to the sound of crickets and wake to sunrise over the water. All meals on board are included.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Hotels all have Wi-Fi. On the houseboat and in some more remote areas of the backwaters, connectivity is limited or unavailable. This is genuinely part of the experience.
Can I upgrade?
The tour is available as a private departure with upgraded accommodation on request. Extra nights in Chennai at the start or Kochi at the end are also available as paid options. A Kochi sightseeing tour is available as a post-tour add-on.
What kind of food will we eat?
Tamil Nadu offers rich rice-based meals, fresh coconut-based curries, dosas (fermented rice and lentil crepes), idli (steamed rice cakes), sambar, and Madurai's famous street food. At the Mohanam Cultural Centre you enjoy a traditional Tamil lunch served on banana leaves. In Kerala the cuisine shifts to coconut milk-based fish curries, appam (lacy rice pancakes), fresh seafood from the backwaters, and Munnar's distinctive spiced teas.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan or gluten-free diets?
Is it safe to drink the water?
Do not drink tap water in India. Use bottled water throughout. The houseboat cook uses safe water for food preparation. Bring a Water-to-Go filter bottle to reduce plastic waste.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The group is capped at 12, which makes it one of the more intimate formats available, and the Kerala backwaters section in particular lends itself to meeting people. Solo travellers can share a room or pay the single supplement.
Do I have to share a room?
Pricing is based on twin share. A single supplement is available if you want your own room throughout the tour, including a private cabin on the houseboat.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups are capped at a maximum of 12 with a minimum of 2. Groups of 5 or more have a dedicated guide for the full tour; smaller groups travel with a driver and specialist local guides at each city.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The tour is available as a private departure on any date. Contact us for a customised quotation.
Do I need a visa for India?
Most nationalities including UK, USA, EU, Canada and Australia need to arrange a visa in advance. India's e-Visa system makes this straightforward: apply online at the official Indian e-Visa portal, pay the fee, and download your e-Visa. Apply at least 4 to 7 days before departure. Check current requirements as visa rules can and do change.
What should I pack?
Loose-fitting, modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temple visits (many south Indian temples require modest dress and some require removing shoes). Light cotton layers for the heat and humidity. A light jacket for Munnar's hill-station evenings. Sun protection is essential. Indian-style sockets are mainly Type C, D and M (230V). Bring a universal adapter.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations for India include Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid. Malaria is present in some regions of India but risk is generally low in the south Indian areas on this itinerary. Consult your GP or a travel clinic for current recommendations. Yellow Fever rules for India are complex if you are arriving from certain countries.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. Fly into Chennai (MAA) and out of Kochi (COK). We can arrange flights if you prefer. All airport arrival and departure transfers are included.
What about tipping?
Tipping is an accepted part of Indian culture. Your guide will provide current norms at the start of the tour. The tour notes suggest budgeting for local guides, your driver, and restaurant tips based on your satisfaction with the service.
Can I add a Kathakali dance performance in Kerala?
Yes. Kerala is the birthplace of Kathakali, a classical dance-drama involving elaborate costumes and makeup that tells Hindu stories. A Kathakali performance is available as a paid option. Book in advance through us.
Can I add a Kochi city tour?
Yes. A Kochi sightseeing tour (Synagogue, spice market, Dutch Palace, Chinese fishing nets) is available as a paid option at the end of the tour. Extra nights in Kochi post-tour are also available.
Can I add extra nights at the start in Chennai?
Yes. An extra night in Chennai before the tour starts is available as a paid option.

The tour runs year-round with regular group departures. The most popular season (October to March) books up months ahead. We recommend booking 3 to 6 months in advance for preferred dates.
How does booking work?
