Why book the Temples and Spices tour?
Temples and Spices is an 8-day small-group tour running Chennai to Chennai through Tamil Nadu, the cultural heartland of South India. In one week you visit three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, attend a temple aarti ceremony, explore a French colonial quarter, learn Tamil classical arts, and ride a 6-hour overnight train. Key sites include the Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur (Chola dynasty, over 1,000 years old), and the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai. Groups are capped at 12, so experiences feel personal rather than coach-tour.
Is Temples and Spices suitable for first-time visitors to India?
It is an excellent entry point into India for travellers who want a structured introduction. Tamil Nadu is arguably the most accessible and comfortable part of India for first-timers - it is culturally rich, the infrastructure is good, and the temple architecture is among the most impressive in the world. The small group and professional guide mean you are never left to navigate India's complexity alone.
What is the difference between Temples and Spices and your other South India tours?
Temples and Spices (8 days) covers Tamil Nadu's Chola heritage and coastal temples from Chennai. The Southern India Uncovered tour (longer) covers more ground and may include Kerala. The Mumbai Express connects Mumbai with the south. Temples and Spices is the right choice for a focused, deep dive into Tamil culture and architecture.
What is the best time of year for Temples and Spices?
October to March is the most comfortable period. Tamil Nadu has its northeast monsoon in October to December, which brings rain but can also be missed. Avoid April to June when temperatures regularly exceed 40C. The tour runs year-round.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it - India is often presented as a budget destination. But Temples and Spices includes 7 nights in 3-to-4-star hotels, all transport, a professional guide throughout, entrance fees to sites, and the overnight train from Madurai to Chennai. The small group cap of 12 means you get a more personal experience than a standard India tour.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 7 nights in 3-to-4-star hotels, all transport and transfers, a professional guide throughout, entrance fees to all included sites, the Madurai to Chennai overnight train, and meals as indicated in the itinerary.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, Indian e-visa fees, travel insurance, meals not listed, tips for guides and drivers, drinks and personal expenses. India is very good value for meals and personal spending outside the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve with a deposit and pay the balance 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is Temples and Spices?
It is moderate. Temple complexes involve significant walking on stone floors, often requiring bare feet. The largest temples (Brihadeeswarar in Thanjavur and Meenakshi in Madurai) take 1-2 hours to explore on foot. There are no strenuous activities. Heat management is the main physical challenge.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
Temples and Spices is suitable for older travellers. The pace is deliberate and there are no adventure activities. Heat in summer can be challenging for anyone - the October to March season is much more comfortable.
What if I have mobility issues?
Many Indian temples require removing shoes and walking on uneven stone floors. The Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai is very large and involves considerable walking. Contact us before booking if you have specific mobility concerns.
How hot does it get in Tamil Nadu?
Coastal Tamil Nadu (Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Madurai) typically sees temperatures of 28-35C in the October to March season, rising to 40C+ in April to June. Humidity is high near the coast year-round. Light cotton or linen clothing is essential.
Is India safe to visit right now?
Tamil Nadu is one of India's safest and most stable states for tourists. The temple towns of Thanjavur and Madurai are well-organised for visitors. Check your government's current travel advice before departure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Solo female travellers visit Tamil Nadu regularly. Having a guide throughout the tour provides significant reassurance. Modest dress (particularly for temple visits, which require covering shoulders and knees) is both respectful and practically reduces unwanted attention.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Chennai and the larger cities have good private hospitals. Your guide is the first point of contact. Travel insurance covering medical expenses and emergency evacuation is compulsory.
Will I be hassled by vendors?
India's temple towns do have vendors and touts near the main sites. Your guide manages the situation at busy locations. A polite no is usually sufficient. Inside the temples themselves, the atmosphere is reverent and calm.
What is the accommodation actually like?
Hotels are at the 3-to-4-star level throughout. South Indian hotels at this level are air-conditioned and comfortable, with en-suite rooms. Pondicherry has particularly charming boutique properties in the French Quarter.
What is the overnight train like?
The 6-hour overnight train from Madurai to Chennai runs in the second class A/C sleeper class on most Encounters tours. Berths are horizontally arranged and clean, with bedding provided. The train experience is a genuine South India encounter in itself - bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Hotels have Wi-Fi. On the overnight train, connectivity is via mobile data which is generally reliable in Tamil Nadu.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
Contact us about upgrade options for specific nights. Pondicherry in particular has excellent boutique properties. Private departures allow hotel customisation.
What kind of food will we eat?
Tamil Nadu food is extraordinary - among the most diverse and flavour-intense in India. Expect idli and sambar (steamed rice cakes with lentil soup), dosa (crispy rice crepes with chutneys), masala meals served on banana leaves, biryani in Pondicherry, and fresh coconut-based curries. The Mohanam Cultural Centre in Pondicherry offers an authentic Tamil arts and food experience.
Can you cater for vegetarian or vegan diets?
Tamil Nadu is one of the most vegetarian-friendly regions on earth. Traditional Tamil cuisine is largely vegetarian and the vegan options are extensive. Inform us when booking.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Do not drink tap water in India. Use bottled water throughout. Hotels provide bottled water. A Water-to-Go filter bottle is a sustainable alternative - use code ENCOUNTERS25 for 25% off.
Is Temples and Spices good for solo travellers?
Yes. The small group cap of 12 creates an intimate environment. Solo travellers regularly join and the guided format makes it easy to explore India's temple culture without the logistical complexity of going independently.
Do I have to share a room?
A single supplement is available for private rooms throughout. Without it, solo travellers may be matched with a same-sex room partner.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups run with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12 passengers. The small group draws culturally curious travellers who want depth rather than a whistle-stop tour.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures on dates of your choice are available. Contact us for pricing.
Is Temples and Spices suitable for kids?
There is no minimum age listed. Older children (12 and above) often find the temple architecture and aarti ceremonies genuinely awe-inspiring. Younger children may find full days of temple-walking tiring. Contact us for family advice.
Do I need a visa for India?
Most nationalities require an Indian e-visa, available online before travel. UK, US, Canadian, Australian, and many other passport holders can apply online. Check current requirements on the official Indian e-visa portal.
What should I pack?

Can I combine with other India tours?
