Why book the Sri Lanka on a Shoestring tour?
Sri Lanka on a Shoestring is our 13-day budget-focused adventure from Colombo to Galle, designed for travellers who want to experience Sri Lanka properly without paying premium prices. In 13 days you visit the Fish Market at Negombo, the Dambulla Cave Complex, hike up Sigiriya Rock Fortress, walk the scenic Manigala Trail in the Knuckles range, take a Sri Lankan cookery class in Ella, white-water raft in Kitulgala, ride the scenic mountain railway from Hatton to Ella, hike Ella Rock at sunrise, go on a jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park, surf in Unawatuna, take a tuk-tuk ride to Galle Fort, and end with a pooja blessing at a Buddhist temple. Groups are capped at 20, minimum 4, with a bilingual adventure leader throughout.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Sri Lanka?
Yes. The shoestring format is specifically designed for independent-minded travellers who want to cover the highlights affordably. You get all the great experiences with a leader who knows the country, without the padded pricing of premium tours.
What makes this a shoestring tour?
Shoestring tours use hostels, guesthouses and one night of camping rather than hotels. You use local public transport (trains, tuk-tuks, buses) alongside private vehicles. This keeps costs down while giving you a more authentic experience of how Sri Lanka actually moves.
What is the best time of year to visit Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka's west and south coasts (where this tour spends most of its time) are best from December to April, during the dry season. The hill country (Ella, Knuckles) and the north and east are better May to September. The tour runs year-round with regular group departures.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper ways to travel Sri Lanka. But this tour includes a remarkable amount: 12 nights accommodation, all in-country transport (including the famous mountain railway from Hatton to Ella), white-water rafting, the Sigiriya Rock hike, Udawalawe safari, surfing lesson, cookery class, and a bilingual adventure leader throughout. Pricing is kept honest by using guesthouses, hostels and local transport rather than hotel chains.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: all accommodation (hostels, guesthouses and one camping night), all transport whilst in Sri Lanka, an evening walking tour of Colombo, Negombo fish market visit, Dambulla Cave Complex, Sigiriya Rock Fortress hike, Manigala Trail hike, Kandy Lake sunset visit, Sputnik Centre visit, white-water rafting at Kitulgala, scenic train from Hatton to Ella, Ella Rock sunrise hike, Rawana Falls, cookery class, Buduruvagala temple, Udawalawe jeep safari, Handunugoda Tea Estate, surf lesson, Galle Fort tuk-tuk and city tour, Buddhist temple pooja blessing, bilingual adventure leader throughout, and meals as indicated (11 breakfasts, 1 lunch).
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, airport transfers (arrival and departure), most dinners, drinks, snacks, personal expenses, and guide tips. Budget for dinners most evenings and your own drinks. Airport transfers are not included, so arrange your own or book them as an add-on.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Hold a reservation, pay a deposit, or pay in full. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure. Regular group departures are limited to 20 passengers.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Moderate. The Sigiriya Rock Fortress hike involves a steep climb to 350m above the surrounding plains. Ella Rock is a 3 to 4-hour sunrise hike. White-water rafting at Kitulgala is grade 2 to 3 and requires basic swimming ability. The Manigala Trail in the Knuckles is a moderate hike. If you are reasonably fit and enjoy being active, you will love it.
What if I am not very sporty?
Most of the adventure activities (rafting, Sigiriya climb, Ella Rock hike) are manageable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. The train ride, cookery class, tuk-tuk to Galle and beach time at Unawatuna balance out the more active days.

Yes. Sri Lanka is generally safe for solo female travellers. The group format provides strong support, and the adventure leader is experienced at managing solo travellers of all backgrounds.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your adventure leader is your first contact. Colombo and Kandy both have good hospitals. Travel insurance with medical cover is compulsory.
What is the accommodation actually like?
Hostels and guesthouses throughout, plus one night of camping. The accommodation is clean and sociable rather than luxurious. Shared bathrooms are common at hostel-style properties. This is genuinely the shoestring experience, and most travellers on this tour are specifically choosing it over 4-star hotels.
What is the camping night like?
One camping night is included in the itinerary. Tents and basic facilities are provided. Your adventure leader manages the setup.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
In most guesthouses and hostels, yes, though speeds vary. On hiking days and the train journey, you are off-grid. A Sri Lankan SIM card is cheap and widely available.
What kind of food will we eat?
Sri Lankan cuisine is spicy and vibrant: rice and curry (a staple served everywhere), hoppers (bowl-shaped rice flour pancakes), string hoppers, kottu roti, dhal, fresh coconut sambols, and excellent seafood on the coast. The cookery class in Ella teaches you how to make several of these dishes yourself.
Can you cater for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets?
Sri Lankan cuisine is naturally rich in vegetarian and vegan dishes. Rice, dhal, coconut and vegetable curries are everywhere and excellent. Gluten-free is very workable given that rice is the staple. Let us know at booking.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water. Bottled water is inexpensive throughout Sri Lanka. A Water-to-Go filter bottle helps reduce plastic waste.
