Why book the Galapagos Essentials tour?
Galapagos Essentials is our lead-in 7-day land-based island-hopping tour of the Galapagos, running from Quito to Quito. You arrive in the highlands of Santa Cruz to spot giant tortoises in the wild and explore lava tunnels, snorkel in Academy Bay alongside sea turtles, rays, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies, visit Playa de los Perros to see marine iguanas, tour the Charles Darwin Research Station, then take a speedboat to San Cristobal Island where you explore Isla Lobos (frigate birds, manta rays, blue-footed boobies, sharks) and relax on pristine white coral beaches. Snorkelling gear is included. Groups run 2-12 people.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to the Galapagos?
Ideal for first-timers who want to experience the Galapagos without an overly active itinerary. You cover the essential wildlife encounters across Santa Cruz and San Cristobal without needing any special fitness or dive certification.
What is the difference between this and your other Galapagos tours?
Galapagos Essentials is the 7-day lead-in product visiting Santa Cruz and San Cristobal, ideal for those who want the Galapagos without too much activity. Best of the Galapagos (7 days) visits Isabela and Santa Cruz with a more active itinerary including a Sierra Negra Volcano hike. Galapagos Uncovered (10 days) visits three islands (San Cristobal, Isabela, and Santa Cruz) and is best for those with more time.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
The Galapagos is a year-round destination with departures most Saturdays. The warm season (December to May) brings calmer seas, warmer water, and nesting marine iguanas and sea turtles. The cool season (June to November) brings cooler water, the Humboldt current, and between July and October you may spot dolphins and whales during the San Cristobal speedboat crossing.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
The Galapagos is one of the world's most strictly controlled national parks. Entry requires an INGALA transit card and a Galapagos National Park fee (both paid locally and not included in the tour price). Beyond those fees, Galapagos Essentials includes return domestic flights Quito-Baltra, all island transport including speedboat transfers between islands, 5-star accommodation in Quito (Sheraton Hotel), 3-star accommodation on both Galapagos islands (Blue Marlin Hotel San Cristobal, La Isla Hotel Santa Cruz), snorkelling gear throughout, naturalist local guide, and 6 breakfasts and 3 lunches.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 5-star accommodation in Quito (Sheraton Hotel, 2 nights), 3-star accommodation on Santa Cruz (La Isla Hotel) and San Cristobal (Blue Marlin Hotel), return domestic flight Quito-Baltra and San Cristobal-Quito, all island transport and speedboat transfers, snorkelling gear (mask, fins, life vest), naturalist local guide while in Galapagos, 6 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and airport transfers in Quito for the Galapagos flights.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, Quito arrival and departure airport transfers on Days 1 and 7 (available as optional extras), INGALA transit card (paid in cash at Quito or Guayaquil airport), Galapagos National Park entrance fee (paid in cash on arrival), wetsuit hire (optional), travel insurance, tips, meals not listed, drinks, and personal expenses. Your guide will advise on current local payment requirements.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit to reserve your place and the balance 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is Galapagos Essentials?
Easy. The tour is designed for those who want the Galapagos experience without high activity levels. The highland walk to see giant tortoises is on a private ranch with easy terrain. Snorkelling is the most active element.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
Galapagos Essentials is explicitly designed as the least active of our Galapagos tours. It is well suited to older travellers who want the extraordinary wildlife experience without strenuous hikes.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The highland walk is on relatively flat ranch terrain. Getting in and out of the speedboat to San Cristobal may require some agility. Contact us to discuss specific concerns.
Is snorkelling suitable for non-swimmers?
Snorkelling gear includes a life vest. Confident non-swimmers who are comfortable in shallow water can participate in the snorkelling sections. Stronger swimmers will get more from the open water snorkels.
Is Ecuador safe to visit right now?
Ecuador is a tourism-friendly destination. The Galapagos Islands are remote and very safe. Check current UK Foreign Office advice for mainland Ecuador before travel.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
The Galapagos is very safe for solo women. The islands have a small, tight-knit community and a well-established tourism infrastructure.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Quito and the main Galapagos islands have medical facilities. Your guide has first aid training and local contacts. Travel insurance with medical cover and repatriation is compulsory.
What is the accommodation actually like?
In Quito you stay at the 5-star Sheraton Hotel with panoramic city views, two restaurants, and a spa. On Santa Cruz Island you stay at La Isla Hotel in the heart of Puerto Ayora, with a rooftop terrace and buffet breakfasts. On San Cristobal you stay at the Blue Marlin Hotel in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, with an outdoor pool, jacuzzi, and air-conditioned rooms. All properties are en-suite.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is available at the Sheraton Hotel in Quito and at both Galapagos island hotels.
Can I upgrade?
Extra nights in Quito (5-star, pre or post-tour) are available as optional extras. A half-day or full-day Quito city tour can also be added. Contact our sales team.
What kind of food will we eat?
Ecuadorian and Galapagos cuisine centres on fresh seafood (encebollado fish soup, ceviche), plantains, rice, and local fruit. Hotel breakfasts are buffet-style. The included lunches are typically at local restaurants or on excursions.
Can you cater for vegetarian vegan or gluten-free diets?
Vegetarian options are available throughout. Vegan and gluten-free diets are manageable with advance notice. Inform us when you book.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water in Ecuador and the Galapagos. A Water-to-Go filter bottle reduces plastic waste, which is particularly important in this fragile ecosystem.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Very popular with solo travellers. The small group size of 2-12 creates a close-knit dynamic over 7 days in an extraordinary environment.
Do I have to share a room?
The tour price is based on twin-sharing. A single supplement is available (note: single supplement prices may vary seasonally).
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups run with a minimum of 2 and maximum of 12. Expect a mix of nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and first-time Galapagos visitors from a wide range of ages.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private and tailor-made Galapagos tours are available. Contact our sales team.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The Galapagos wildlife (giant tortoises, sea lions, iguanas) is spectacular for children. No minimum age is specified. Contact us about a private family departure.
Do I need a visa for Ecuador?
Most nationalities (including UK, EU, USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa) can visit Ecuador visa-free for stays up to 90 days. Check your nationality's requirements on the Ecuadorian consulate website.
What should I pack?
Pack light and breathable clothing. Bring a rash guard or wetsuit (hire available) for snorkelling, water shoes or reef shoes for beach landings, high-factor reef-safe sunscreen, a wide-brimmed sun hat, polarised sunglasses, and binoculars for birdwatching. Ecuador uses Type A and B plugs at 120V. Flights to the Galapagos have strict luggage limits (typically 20-23kg checked, 8-10kg hand luggage), so pack light.
Are any vaccinations required?
No specific vaccinations are required for most nationalities visiting Ecuador. However, if you are arriving from or have spent more than 10 days in Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, or Brazil, a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for entry into Ecuador. Consult your GP or travel clinic.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. The tour starts and finishes at Mariscal Sucre Quito International Airport (UIO). The tour departs most Saturdays.
What about tipping?
Tipping is appreciated in Ecuador. For the full tour team (guides, drivers, naturalist guide), budget around an amount per person per day. Your guide will advise on current norms.
Can I add a Quito city tour?
Yes. A half-day Quito City Tour and a Full Day Quito and Equator Line Tour are both available as paid optional extras. Book through our sales team in advance.
Can I add extra nights in Quito?
Yes. Extra nights in Quito before or after the tour are available at the 5-star level.
How far ahead should I book?
The Galapagos has limited accommodation and strict visitor controls. Book two to four months ahead for preferred dates.
How does booking work?
Book via the Dates and Prices page. Saturday departures year-round. Pay a deposit or hold a reservation. Balance due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, compulsory. Must cover medical expenses, repatriation, and any scuba or snorkelling activities. World Nomads is a recommended option.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale of charges applies. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Trust My Travel financial protection covers your funds.
What if my dates are sold out?
Contact us about the waitlist or alternative Saturdays. Best of the Galapagos (7 days) and Galapagos Uncovered (10 days) are alternative Galapagos options if your preferred Essentials dates are full.
