Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Mumbai Express tour?
Mumbai Express is our tight, efficient 4-day private introduction to one of the world's most visceral cities, running from Mumbai to Mumbai. In four days you do the full Mumbai City Tour (Gateway of India, Flora Fountain, Rajabai Clock Tower, High Court, Victoria Terminus), a Bollywood Studios Tour with live shooting, the Rehman and SJ Walls of Fame, and hands-on costume and dance sessions, a Dabbawalas lunchbox delivery ride on local trains (Monday to Friday only), Dhobi Ghats (the world's largest open-air laundry), and a Dharavi slum walking tour (Slumdog Millionaire location). You stay at the 4-star Fariyas Hotel Mumbai with a rooftop pool overlooking the Arabian Sea. Groups run 2-12 as a private tour.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to India?
Mumbai Express is an excellent first India experience precisely because Mumbai is India in hyper-concentrated form. That said, Mumbai is intense: the Dharavi tour and the Dabbawala ride are deeply immersive experiences that reward open-minded travellers. If you prefer a wider Indian itinerary including Rajasthan, look at the Rajasthan Explorer tour.
What is the difference between this and your other India tours?
Mumbai Express is a 4-day private city tour focused entirely on Mumbai. Rajasthan Explorer is a 15-day small-group journey through Rajasthan's royal cities. Temples and Tigers adds Ranthambore National Park tiger safaris to a combined Mumbai-Ranthambore itinerary. Best of India extends further to Kerala. Taj to Varanasi adds Varanasi. Mumbai Express is for travellers who specifically want a deep, fast dive into the city.
What is the best time of year to do Mumbai Express?
October to February is the most comfortable: dry, warm (25-32°C), and low humidity. March to May gets hotter. The monsoon season runs May to September: rain is heavy and humidity is extreme, though the city takes on a dramatic energy. The tour runs year-round. Note that the Dabbawala train ride operates Monday to Friday only.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
As a private tour with all sightseeing included, Mumbai Express covers everything: Fariyas Hotel accommodation (4-star, rooftop pool, Arabian Sea views), all guided activities including the Bollywood Studios Tour, Dhobi Ghats, Dharavi walking tour, all transport and 24-hour transfers, all entrance fees. You arrive and leave without organising a single thing.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 3 nights at Fariyas Hotel Mumbai (4-star), all guided sightseeing and activities (Mumbai City Tour, Bollywood Studios Tour, Dabbawala train ride, Dhobi Ghats, Dharavi slum tour), all transport and 24-hour transfers, all entrance fees, and an English-speaking guide throughout.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, India e-visa, travel insurance, meals (only breakfasts are included), drinks, personal expenses, tips, and anything not listed above. Mumbai is an affordable city for eating out.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit to secure your dates and the balance 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is Mumbai Express?
Easy. The main activities involve walking in the city, riding local trains (crowded but manageable), and walking through Dharavi (uneven, narrow lanes). No special fitness is required.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
Mumbai Express is a private tour so the pace is set by you and your party. The Dharavi tour involves navigating narrow lanes, but your guide sets the pace.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The Dabbawala train ride involves navigating crowded Mumbai local trains and the Dharavi tour has uneven narrow lanes. If you have significant mobility limitations, contact us to discuss which activities can be adapted.
Is Mumbai safe to visit right now?
Mumbai is generally safe for tourists. It is a well-policed city with a large, experienced tourism industry. Standard precautions apply in crowded areas. Check current UK Foreign Office advice before travel.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Mumbai is one of India's safer cities for solo women, though standard common-sense precautions apply, particularly after dark. As a private tour with a dedicated guide, you are accompanied at all times during activities.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Mumbai has excellent private hospitals including Breach Candy and Lilavati. Your guide has first aid training and local medical contacts. Travel insurance covering medical treatment and repatriation is compulsory.
What is the accommodation actually like?
You stay at the Fariyas Hotel Mumbai for 3 nights, a 4-star property in a great location with a rooftop pool overlooking the Arabian Sea. Rooms are air-conditioned and en-suite. The rooftop pool is a welcome retreat after a full day in the city.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Yes, Wi-Fi is available at Fariyas Hotel Mumbai. India's mobile data networks are also very affordable if you pick up a local SIM.
Can I upgrade?
As a private tour, accommodation preferences can be discussed with our sales team. Contact us for alternatives.
What kind of food will we eat?
Mumbai is one of India's great food cities: Vada Pav (Mumbai's street burger), Pav Bhaji, Bhel Puri, brilliant seafood, and the famous Irani cafes. Breakfasts are included at the hotel. The rest of your meals are free to explore Mumbai's extraordinary restaurant scene.
Can you cater for vegetarian vegan or gluten-free diets?
Mumbai has outstanding vegetarian and vegan options given India's culinary traditions. Gluten-free is manageable at good restaurants. Inform us when you book.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Do not drink tap water in Mumbai. Use bottled water or a Water-to-Go filter bottle. The hotel provides bottled water.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Mumbai Express is an excellent solo travel option. As a private tour you get a dedicated guide without having to socialise with a large group.
Do I have to share a room?
Single rooms are available at the Fariyas Hotel with a supplement.
What is the group size?
This is a private tour running with a minimum of 2 and maximum of 12. Your group has an exclusive guide and vehicle.
Can I book this as a couple or small group of friends?
Yes. Mumbai Express is specifically a private tour for your own party. Perfect for couples, friends, or small families.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
Mumbai's sights (Bollywood studios, Gateway of India, Dhobi Ghats) are fantastic for older children. The Dharavi tour is appropriate for mature teenagers who can understand the context. Contact us to discuss.
Do I need a visa for India?
Most nationalities need an India e-visa, applied for online before travel. Check the official Indian government e-visa website for current requirements and fees.
What should I pack?
Pack light, breathable clothing. Mumbai is humid year-round. Modest dress is not required in the main tourist areas but is appropriate when visiting temples. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. India uses Type C, D, and M plugs at 230V.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations for India include Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid. Malaria risk is low in Mumbai and major tourist areas. Consult your GP or travel clinic.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. The tour starts and finishes at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai. International flights are not included.
What about the Dabbawalas - are there any scheduling constraints?
Yes. The Dabbawala local train ride operates Monday to Friday only. Weekend arrivals will have the Dabbawala activity rescheduled within the tour. Your guide will advise on the programme at the start.
Can I combine Mumbai Express with Rajasthan?
Yes. Temples and Tigers is a tour that combines Mumbai with Ranthambore National Park tiger safaris. The Best of India tour extends the itinerary further to Kerala. Ask our sales team about connecting Mumbai Express with other India tours.
Can I add a Taj to Varanasi extension?
Yes. Taj to Varanasi is a related tour that adds the Varanasi Ganges experience to the itinerary. Ask our sales team about combining it with your Mumbai visit.
How far ahead should I book?
As a private tour, dates are flexible, but popular festival periods (Diwali, Christmas) book up. Contact us early to secure your preferred dates.
How does booking work?
Contact our sales team for a private tour quote. Pay a deposit to secure your dates. Balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, compulsory. Must cover medical treatment and repatriation.

A sliding scale of charges applies. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Trust My Travel financial protection covers your funds.

It was the best two weeks ever thanks to Atul and his wonderful team. We spent one week north of India, visited all the wonderful spots and we even celebrated Holi. It’s very complicated to select one highlight as we really saw so many wonderful things. After a week in the north we went to Kochi and visited the south of India which is more relaxing, green and seems like a different country. Atul was the best coordinator, he anticipated all our needs and was listening and adapting the program to our wish. Thank you so much Atul and Vijay for everything. You made our trip wonderful.

Just finished up the Incredible India tour, what an amazing experience! If you’re expecting every modern comfort and can’t be in the heat too long, this might not be for you. However, you would miss out on the experience to taste the most flavorful, colorful, and energetic culture that exists in this world. I would describe this tour as a Golden Triangle+ (it goes to a couple more towns/villages)
On most stops a local tour guide would join your group and give you a thorough explanation and interesting facts of the monuments, palaces, forts, etc. They were all fantastic. Not only they taught you the history but also made sure you visited markets, small villages, and mingled with the locals that were going about their daily lives. For this trip, we made sure we picked a date that included Holi festival. This was very special as we celebrated Holi in a very small village (Tordi). We got to play with the colors in a small village full of wonderful kids and people that were just as curious of us as we were of them. We had a blast with the colors. Our driver, Mr. Singh will always be a friend. In typical Sikh manner he was always there to save the day whenever anything went wrong. He did it always with a huge smile and would throw in a joke or two.
The accommodations were very well selected. As the tour description states, the heritage hotels were the absolute best. The hospitality was in the true Indian way. Both the Khandela Haveli and the Tordi Garh were great. I wish all hotels were in that style.
Booking this trip had its major challenges caused by India entry restrictions related to COVID-19. Encounters Travel did an excellent job recognizing these challenges and modifying their policies. I feel like they were more than fair in recognizing the uncertainties of traveling during a pandemic. Ant Horrobin took us by the hand throughout the entire process and kept us up to date with all the changes. Thanks to him we decided to go on with the trip and we could not be any happier!
Highly recommend.

This trip was fantastic, informative from start to finish. We were a small group of 13. We were lucky: everyone was congenial and punctual, meeting up at the appointed times, and Big Mo, our guide, with years of experience, paved our way from start to finish doling out sound advice, tips and precautions.
There are a couple of things you might want to know:
1) The food is delicious but its best to avoid raw fruits and vegetables, and never drink water from the tab. I was overly careful, even used straws to drink from a canned soda, etc. and I felt only an hours worth of travelers diarrhea. My husband ended up with a much bigger hit. He ignored advice from our friend who'd traveled to India and China many times. Rather than run the risk of missing some of the activities, just go without salads for one week... There are plenty of great cooked food options.
2) The sleeper train was an experience from Cairo to Aswan. If you are young, can afford to forego a good sleep, maybe its an adventure worth having. For the return trip, Luxor to Cairo, we asked to upgrade to Egypt Air and an extra night at the 5 star, Sheraton in Cairo. In other words we scratched a return trip by sleeper car train, and were very glad.
We can't say enough good things about Encounters Travel and our Egyptian experience.

Between my sister and her husband's planning and the organisation of Encounters we had the most amazing holiday in India. I wouldn't have changed a thing, and it was great to feel so confident in all the arrangements.
