Why book the Taj to Varanasi Tour?
Eleven days, one of the world's most iconic monuments, two of its most sacred rivers, and a journey aboard India's flagship high-speed Vande Bharat Express train. This tour connects Delhi, Agra (Taj Mahal and Agra Fort), Fatehpur Sikri, Orchha, Khajuraho, and Varanasi in a logical overland arc that covers architectural, spiritual and everyday India in equal measure. The group is capped at 12, there are heritage stays woven into the itinerary, and you visit Sheroes Hangout Cafe (run by acid attack survivors) in Agra, adding genuine social depth to an already rich itinerary.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to India?
Yes, and deliberately so. The route progresses from the relatively tourist-friendly Golden Triangle area into deeper, more immersive India, with a local guide holding the logistics together at every step. First-timers benefit from having someone who knows exactly which entrance to use at the Taj Mahal, how to navigate Varanasi's labyrinthine ghats at dawn, and where to eat safely. It is a well-structured introduction that does not sanitise the experience.
What is the difference between this and your other India tours?
The Taj to Varanasi Tour (11 days) focuses on the classical Mughal heritage corridor plus the Ganges holy city of Varanasi, with the Vande Bharat train journey as a highlight. The Incredible India tour is a broader circuit covering more of the country. Temples and Tigers adds wildlife safari into the mix. The Mumbai Express focuses on the west coast and urban India. If Mughal history, sacred Hinduism and an iconic train journey are your priorities, this is the right tour.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
October to March is the sweet spot: temperatures in the 15-25 degrees Celsius range across north India, clear skies for Taj Mahal photography, and comfortable conditions for walking the ghats in Varanasi. April and May get hot (above 35 degrees Celsius). The June to September monsoon brings relief from the heat but also heavy rain and humidity. November and December are particularly popular for the cool, crisp conditions.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper India tours out there. What you are paying for here is 10 nights in a curated mix of 3-star hotels and heritage properties, a knowledgeable local English-speaking guide for the full 11 days, the Vande Bharat train from Delhi to Varanasi (8-hour AC chair car journey), a Mughal Heritage Walk in Delhi, a private Ganges dawn boat trip in Varanasi, a visit to Suroth Mahal heritage hotel, all entrance fees at included sites, and most breakfasts. Running groups of up to 12 ensures real personal attention.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 10 nights accommodation (mix of 3-star hotels and heritage properties including Suroth Mahal); Vande Bharat Express train ticket (Delhi to Varanasi, AC chair car); English-speaking guide for the full tour; Mughal Heritage Walk in Delhi; Taj Mahal and Agra Fort guided tour; visit to Sheroes Hangout Cafe; Fatehpur Sikri; Orchha temples and cenotaphs; Khajuraho temples; Varanasi dawn Ganges boat trip; Sarnath excursion; most breakfasts; and all transport between destinations.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights; India e-visa fee (payable in advance online, check current rates on the India visa portal); travel insurance; lunches and dinners not specified in the itinerary; drinks; personal spending; entrance fees at sites not listed above; and tips for your guide and driver. Your guide will brief current recommended tipping amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit to secure your place and the balance is due eight weeks before departure. A reserve-now-pay-later option is also available at checkout if you want to lock in your spot without an immediate payment.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Easy to moderate. The main physical demands are walking around large archaeological sites (Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Khajuraho) where surfaces can be uneven, and navigating Varanasi's ghat steps, which are steep and slippery in places when wet. There is no trekking. A reasonable level of general fitness is all that is needed.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
This tour is well-suited to travellers of all ages. The pace is not rushed and there are regular rest stops built in. The ghat steps in Varanasi require reasonable balance and care, particularly in the early morning when they can be slippery. If you have mobility concerns, let us know and your guide can advise on accessible alternatives for specific sites.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The main obstacle is uneven ground at heritage sites and the stepped ghats in Varanasi. The Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Khajuraho all involve significant walking. Wheelchairs or walking frames are workable at some sites but not others. If you have specific needs, contact us before booking and we can give you a frank assessment of what will and won't work.
How hot does it actually get?
In the October to March peak season, daytime temperatures range from around 15 to 28 degrees Celsius in north India. April and May can push above 38 degrees Celsius in Agra and Varanasi, which makes outdoor sightseeing at midday genuinely tiring. The tour does most outdoor activities in the cooler early morning and late afternoon hours.
Is India safe to visit right now?
India is visited by millions of international tourists annually. The destinations on this tour (Delhi, Agra, Varanasi) are all experienced in handling international visitors. Standard urban precautions apply: keep valuables secure, be alert in crowded markets, and follow your guide's advice on areas to avoid after dark. Check the UK Foreign Office or US State Department travel advice before departure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
India requires more situational awareness than some destinations, particularly in busy tourist areas where persistent attention can occur. That said, thousands of solo female travellers visit the sites on this itinerary every year without serious incident. Travelling with a group and a local guide significantly reduces unwanted attention. Your guide will advise on appropriate dress for each location and provide safety briefings throughout.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Delhi, Agra and Varanasi all have private hospitals and clinics. Your guide knows the nearest reputable medical facility at each point on the itinerary. Stomach upsets are the most common issue for visitors to India. Travel insurance covering medical treatment and repatriation is compulsory. Carry a small personal medical kit with rehydration salts and anti-diarrhoea tablets.
Will I be hassled by vendors and touts?
Persistent touting is common around the Taj Mahal, Varanasi's ghats and other major tourist sites in north India. Your guide will help navigate these areas and a firm, polite 'no' while continuing to walk is the most effective response. The situation has improved in recent years at most major sites, but you should expect some persistence, particularly from rickshaw and boat operators.
What is the accommodation actually like?
You stay in a mix of comfortable 3-star hotels and heritage properties. The standout is Suroth Mahal, a genuine Rajput heritage property that adds a distinctive flavour to the itinerary. City hotels are centrally located, en-suite, and include breakfast. Air conditioning is standard. Wi-Fi is available in all hotels, though speed varies.
What is the Vande Bharat train journey like?
The Vande Bharat Express is India's modern semi-high-speed train and the Delhi to Varanasi leg takes approximately 8 hours in AC chair car class. Seats are fully reclining with individual charging points, air conditioning, and a meal service on board. The journey itself is part of the experience, crossing the Gangetic plain with a changing landscape outside your window.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Hotels throughout the tour have Wi-Fi, though speeds vary and some heritage properties may have less reliable connections. A local SIM card with mobile data is inexpensive in India and recommended as a backup. Your guide can advise on the best place to buy one on arrival in Delhi.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
Upgrades to 4 or 5-star properties are available if you book on a private basis. The heritage properties on this route, including Suroth Mahal, are part of what makes the itinerary distinctive. Contact us to discuss options if you want a more luxurious accommodation profile throughout.
What kind of food will we eat?
North Indian cuisine dominates the itinerary: butter chicken, dal makhani, biryani, fresh flatbreads, and an enormous range of vegetarian dishes. In Varanasi, street food culture is exceptional and your guide will take you to the right spots. The Sheroes Hangout Cafe in Agra serves home-cooked north Indian food in an extraordinary setting. Meals in heritage hotels often feature regional specialities not found in regular restaurants.
Can you cater for vegetarian vegan or gluten-free diets?
Vegetarian eating is excellent throughout north India. Many dishes are naturally vegetarian and menus are always clearly labelled. Vegan is straightforward in most restaurants with a little care around ghee (clarified butter) used in cooking. Gluten-free is manageable with rice-based dishes and naturally gluten-free lentil preparations, though cross-contamination in busy restaurant kitchens cannot be guaranteed. Inform us at booking and your guide will communicate your needs.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water is not safe to drink in India. Use sealed bottled water or a filtered water bottle such as a Water-to-Go bottle, which removes bacteria and protozoa from local water sources and significantly reduces single-use plastic waste. Your guide will advise on safe drinking options at each stop. Avoid ice in drinks unless you are in an established international hotel.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Excellent for solo travellers. The group is capped at 12 and the pace of a multi-stop cultural tour creates a naturally social dynamic. Delhi, Agra and Varanasi are also well set-up for solo exploration during free time, with plenty of reputable restaurants and cultural sites to fill an evening independently.
Do I have to share a room?
Accommodation is based on twin or double occupancy. A single supplement is available if you want your own room throughout the tour. Solo travellers who are comfortable sharing will be matched with a same-gender room-mate.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups run with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12 travellers. The demographic is typically a mix of solo travellers, couples and small groups of friends, ranging from 25 to 65 years old. The India itinerary attracts history enthusiasts, first-time visitors and people returning for deeper experiences in equal measure.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The Taj to Varanasi Tour can be run as a private departure on flexible dates with a customised itinerary. Private bookings allow you to adjust the pace, upgrade accommodation, or add extensions. Contact us with your preferred dates and party size.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The cultural content is genuinely engaging for teenagers and older children with an interest in history. The Taj Mahal alone justifies the trip. For younger children, the full-day travel legs and heritage-focused content can be tiring. Contact us to discuss the best approach for your family.
Do I need a visa for India?
Yes. Most nationalities require an e-Tourist Visa for India, which must be applied for online in advance through the official India Visa Online portal. The e-visa is typically processed within 72 hours. Check current fee rates on the official portal before applying. You cannot obtain an India visa on arrival.
What should I pack?
Modest clothing is important: shoulders and knees covered for temple visits throughout the tour. Lightweight, breathable fabrics work best. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. A shawl or scarf is useful for temple entry requirements and evening cool. India uses Type C and D power sockets; a universal adapter is recommended. Sunscreen, insect repellent and a small personal first aid kit are worthwhile additions.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations for India typically include Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid. Depending on the season and areas you may visit independently outside the itinerary, your GP may also recommend Hepatitis B, Rabies or Japanese Encephalitis. Consult your GP or a travel clinic for personalised advice.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No, international flights are not included and you book them independently. Your gateway airport is Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi. If you would like help identifying suitable flight options, our team can advise, but there is no obligation to book through us.
What about tipping?
Tipping is customary in India. Your guide will brief the group on current recommended amounts for the lead guide, local specialists and drivers at the start of the tour. Amounts are given as guidance, not requirements. Restaurant service charges are often already included in the bill in north India tourist areas.
Can I extend my time in Varanasi?
Yes. Varanasi rewards more than the two days in the main itinerary. An extra day or two allows you to explore the backstreets, visit more ghats at leisure, take an evening Ganga Aarti ceremony boat trip, or make a day trip to the deer park at Sarnath. Additional nights in Varanasi can be arranged as a pre- or post-tour extension.
Can I combine this with a wildlife safari tour?
The Temples and Tigers tour is our India itinerary that incorporates a tiger safari. If big cats are on your list, that tour is worth considering either instead of or in combination with the Taj to Varanasi Tour. Contact us to discuss combining elements into a longer bespoke journey.
Can I extend my time in Delhi?
Yes. Delhi is one of those cities that rewards extra days. An additional pre-tour night allows you to recover from any long-haul jet lag and explore Old Delhi's Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk market and the Red Fort at your own pace before the group itinerary begins. Extra nights are available as a paid add-on.
How far ahead should I book?
October to March is high season for north India and popular departures can fill 3-5 months in advance. The Vande Bharat train seats are also in high demand, so early booking allows us to secure the best seats on the Delhi to Varanasi rail leg. We recommend booking at least 3 months ahead for peak season travel.
How does booking work?
Reserve online via the Dates and Prices page. Pay a deposit to confirm your place, or use reserve-now-pay-later to hold it. The balance is due eight weeks before departure. Instant confirmation is issued on booking.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory on all our tours. Your policy must cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation and repatriation. World Nomads Travel Insurance is a recommended starting point for travellers visiting India. You will need to provide your policy number before the tour departs.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale of cancellation charges applies depending on how far ahead you cancel. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Encounters Travel is a UK-registered company, and customer funds are protected by Trust My Travel's financial protection scheme.
