This 9-day north India tour covers India's classic Golden Triangle route of Delhi, Jaipur and Agra, with several other stops, activities and experiences added in as well to give you a more varied, interesting and comprehensive taste of the region.
This India holiday starts in Delhi, taking in both new and old sides to the city. Old Delhi, the home of the Mughal Empire centuries ago, boasts a wealth of fascinating history, beautiful architecture, great street food, and vibrant lifestyle, while New Delhi's architecture, religious sites and modern aspects form an intriguing contrast.
Our next step is the 'Pink City' of Jaipur, capital of the arid state of Rajasthan. Here we'll visit the Amber Fort, City Palace and Jantar Mantar Observatory before exploring the city's famous craft and produce markets on foot. From Jaipur, we head into the heart of Rajasthan and the remote village of Tordi, where we stay in a converted palace and explore the village and surroundings, getting a real feel for rural Indian life. The huge Step Well at Abanheri with its 3,500 steps and 13 stories is our next stop, en-route to Bharatpur and a guided cycle rickshaw ride seeing the amazing birdlife and other wildlife in Keoladeo National Park.
We'll then tour the strange and deserted city of Fatehpur Sikri before a local villager escorts us on a Mughal Heritage Walk through villages and farmland on the opposite bank of the Yamuna River to the Taj Mahal. This walking tour supports the local community and provides a fascinating insight into village life in Agra as well as providing great views of the Taj Mahal not normally seen. A sunrise tour of the Taj then follows, and a visit to Agra's huge Red Fort, before we head back to Delhi. Our final highlight is a visit to the Akshardham temple complex on the edge of the city.
Accommodation is in a comfortable mid-range modern-style hotels in Delhi and Agra, mixed with heritage hotels converted from Havelis and Palaces in Jaipur and Tordi, and a resort on the edge of Keoladeo National Park.
