Bolivia, officially the Plurinational State of Bolivia, is a landlocked country situated in west-central South America. Sucre is the capital of Bolivia and the seat of government is in La Paz. Santa Cruz de la Sierra is the largest city in the country and the principal economic and financial centre.
The country's sovereign state is a constitutionally unitary state, separated into nine departments. The geography of Bolivia differs from the peaks of the Andes in the west to the Eastern Lowlands, found in the Amazon basin.
Brazil borders Bolivia to the north and east, Paraguay to the southeast, Argentina to the south, Chile to the southwest, and Peru to the northwest. The Andean mountain region takes up one-third of the country. Bolivia is the fifth largest country in South America and the 28th largest in the world.
The population of the country is multiethnic; including Africans, Asians, Europeans, and Amerindians. The official and predominant language in Bolivia is Spanish, although 36 indigenous languages also have official status. The languages of Guarani, Qechua and Aymara are also commonly spoken.
The main economic activities in Bolivia include forestry, fishing, mining and manufacturing refined petroleum, textiles and clothing. It is also a developing country, with a medium ranking in Human Development.
There is a high level of biodiversity, as well as a collection of ecoregions. The different regions vary in altitude, and the country can be divided into the Andean Region, the Sub-Andean Region and the Llanos Region. The country also has three drainage basins, including the Amazon basin, Rio de la Plata basin and the Central basin.
