From Marrakech it’s a just an hour or so drive to the Berber mountain village of Imlil, which is situated in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains and surrounded by wonderful mountains views. This friendly Berber village of mud brick houses is perched upon the side of a hill and is the start point for anyone wishing to try an accent of Mt Toubkal.
The trek itself is a quite straightforward two day climb, winding your way up well worn tracks and stopping to overnight at one of the refuges near Neltner, about half way up. If you are trekking in late spring through to the autumn, then the final section will be snow free and does not require any special equipment or mountaineering skills. The summit should only be tried at other times of the year if you have the relevant mountaineering skills and necessary equipment. Views from the summit are spectacular and on a clear day it’s possible to see all the way to the edge of the Sahara.
Retracing your steps you can either choose to head all the way back to Imlil in one day or stop again at one of the refuges en route. Of course there is plenty more trekking available in the area and with other peaks and sleepy Berber villages to explore extra time spent here will certainly be a rewarding experience.
