The History of Oludeniz
The area was first inhabited by the Lycians around 1500 BC. They were seafaring people who were renowned for their skill in navigation and sailing. The Lycians built many cities in the area, including Fethiye, which is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in Turkey.
In the 4th century BC, Alexander the Great conquered much of Anatolia (modern-day Turkey) and established his kingdom there. He named it after himself - Alexandria Troas - and it included what is now Oludeniz. He built a large city on the site of what is now Oludeniz Beach, which he named Alexandria Limenia (meaning "harbor of Alexandria").
In 333 BC, Alexander's successor King Lysimachus gave control of Alexandria Limenia to Antigonus I Monophthalmus, who renamed it Antigonia Limenia ("harbor of Antigonus"). This city was destroyed by an earthquake in 228 BC and was never rebuilt.
For centuries after that, Oludeniz remained largely uninhabited until 1856 when it was settled by Greek immigrants from Crete who called themselves Cretan Turks or Cretan Greeks. They built several villages in the area including Ovacik and Hisaronu which are still inhabited today.
In 1923 when modern-day Turkey was established after World War I, many Greeks were forced to leave their homes in Anatolia and resettle elsewhere as part of a population exchange between Greece and Turkey. The Cretan Turks living in Oludeniz also had to leave their homes but they managed to stay together as a community by settling nearby on what is now known as Belcekiz Beach.
In 1967 Oludeniz became an official tourist destination when its first hotel opened on Belcekiz Beach. Since then tourism has been booming and today there are dozens of hotels along both Belcekiz Beach and Oludeniz Beach as well as numerous restaurants, bars, shops, and other attractions catering to tourists from all over the world who come to enjoy this stunningly beautiful part of Turkey's Mediterranean coast every year.
The history of Oludeniz may be long but its beauty remains timeless; no matter how many years pass by or how much changes occur around it this stunning beach resort will always remain one of Turkey's most beloved holiday destinations!
Top Things to Do in Oludeniz
First, take a boat tour of the stunning Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon is one of the most iconic sights in Oludeniz and offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding mountains. You can take a boat tour to explore the lagoon's hidden coves and caves or just relax on the deck and enjoy the scenery.
Next, explore some of Oludeniz's many beaches. Oludeniz has some of Turkey's best beaches, from secluded coves to bustling stretches lined with restaurants and bars. Whether you're looking for a quiet spot to relax or an exciting beach party scene, there's something for everyone in Oludeniz.
