When heading off on an Overland adventure, packing smart can make all the difference to your comfort and ease of travel. If I could do it all again, I’d leave half my wardrobe at home and focus on practical, versatile clothing. Trust me—lugging around a suitcase that can’t even fit into the lockers on the truck is not the vibe!
International airlines typically allow 20–23kg of hold luggage, but if your trip includes domestic flights, that drops to 15kg. Hand luggage usually sits around 5–10kg, but always double-check with your airline to avoid any unexpected fees.
For overland and safari tours, soft backpacks are essential. Trucks have limited locker space, and you’ll often be wheeling your bag over sand or rocky ground. Solid, hard-shell suitcases simply don’t fit—literally or logistically. One backpack and one daypack under 20kg is the golden rule.
You’ll need a mix of layers for hot days and surprisingly chilly nights. Think practical: T-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, walking shoes, swimwear, and that essential sunhat. Steer clear of synthetic fabrics and bright colours while on safari—dull tones like khaki and olive are ideal, while camouflage is a no-go in many countries.
From a reliable headlamp to a neck pillow and spare passport photos, the little things matter. A compact first aid kit, insect repellent, reusable water bottle, and even laundry pegs will save you discomfort on the road. And yes, wet wipes are a game-changer.
Some tours, like those including the Okavango Delta, require a small bag for mini-excursions. Your daypack should be just big enough to carry a change of clothes, toiletries, and essentials for short overnight stays away from the main vehicle.
In short, the lighter and smarter you pack, the more freedom you’ll have to enjoy your adventure. Save your back, skip the stress, and travel with only what you truly need.
