Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Istanbul City Break?
The Istanbul City Break is a 4-day small-group tour that packs the Ottoman Empire's greatest legacy sites into a long weekend. Starting Friday and running to Monday, you visit the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Topkapi Palace (former residence of the Ottoman Sultans), the ancient Hippodrome, and the Grand Bazaar with its thousands of stalls across nearly 60 blocks. Day 3 adds a Bosphorus cruise along the strait that connects Europe and Asia, plus a walk up Camlica Hill for panoramic views across the city. Groups are capped at 20 with a minimum of 2, and a specialist local guide leads the two main touring days.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Istanbul?
It is designed for first-timers. The itinerary hits every landmark that Istanbul is famous for, in a logical geographic sequence, with a specialist guide providing historical and cultural context at each site. By the end of four days you will have a working understanding of the Ottoman, Byzantine, and Roman layers that make Istanbul unique.
What is the difference between this and your other Turkey tours?
The Istanbul City Break is a standalone city experience - it does not travel beyond the city limits. The Anatolian Adventure and Best of Turkey tours are longer overland tours covering Cappadocia, the Aegean coast, Pamukkale, and more. The Istanbul and Athens Explorer connects the two capitals. The City Break is the right choice if you specifically want to explore Istanbul deeply in a short time.
What is the best time of year to visit Istanbul?
Istanbul is a year-round destination with distinct seasons. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable, with mild temperatures and lower crowds. Summer (July to August) is warm and busy. Winter is cool but the city is far less crowded and atmospheric. The tour departs every Friday throughout the year.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it - you can arrange a hotel in Istanbul yourself. But the City Break includes 3 nights in a boutique 4-star hotel in the city centre, 24-hour airport transfers, a specialist local guide for two full days of sightseeing, all entrance fees to the sites visited, 3 breakfasts, and a tipping kitty. The guided access to the Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia, and Blue Mosque alone saves significant time and money compared to doing it independently.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 3 nights in a boutique 4-star hotel, 3 breakfasts, a 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfer service, a specialist local guide for sightseeing days, entrance fees to all visited sites, and a tipping kitty.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, Turkish e-visa fee, travel insurance, lunches and dinners, drinks and personal expenses, and tips for your guide and driver. Istanbul is a cosmopolitan city with restaurant options across all budgets, so meal costs depend entirely on your preferences.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve with a deposit and pay the balance 8 weeks before departure. A reserve-now-pay-later option is also available.
How physically demanding is the Istanbul City Break?
It is light. The two main touring days involve a lot of walking - the Grand Bazaar alone covers nearly 60 blocks - but the pace is relaxed and there are no strenuous activities. Comfortable shoes are recommended for cobblestone streets in the historic Sultanahmet district.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
The Istanbul City Break is suitable for all ages. There are no physical requirements beyond being comfortable walking for several hours on flat to gently undulating city streets. The boutique 4-star hotel provides a comfortable base.
What if I have mobility issues?
Most of the main sites - the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia courtyard, the Hippodrome - are on flat ground in the Sultanahmet district. The interior of Topkapi Palace involves some staircases. The Bosphorus cruise is accessible. Let us know before booking and we can advise on any specific access concerns.
Is Istanbul safe to visit right now?
Istanbul is one of the world's top city-break destinations and receives millions of visitors safely each year. As with any major city, normal urban awareness applies - watch bags in crowded bazaars, for example. Check your government's current travel advice before departure and note any advisories about specific areas.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Istanbul is generally safe for solo female travellers. The Sultanahmet district where the tour is based is well-managed and tourist-friendly. Some persistent carpet-shop invitations and touts in the bazaar area can be persistent but manageable. Your guide provides a local buffer on touring days.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Istanbul has excellent private hospitals and clinics. Your guide is the first point of contact for any medical issue. Travel insurance covering medical emergencies is compulsory - ensure it is in place before you arrive.
Will I be hassled by touts and carpet sellers?
The Grand Bazaar and surrounding streets do have persistent vendors. Being with a guide on touring days helps considerably. On your own time, a confident and cheerful refusal is usually enough. The Sultanahmet area is well-policed and tourist-oriented.
What is the accommodation actually like?
You stay in a boutique 4-star hotel in the centre of Istanbul. The Grand Yavuz Hotel is the standard property, located in the Sultanahmet district within walking distance of all the main sites. Rooms are en-suite with A/C.
Can I upgrade to a better hotel?
Yes. The Grand Hyatt and Pera Palace Hotel are available as upgrade options, both iconic Istanbul properties. The Grand Hyatt is a modern 5-star, while the Pera Palace is a historic luxury hotel famous for its connection with Agatha Christie. Ask when booking.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Yes. The hotel has Wi-Fi throughout. Istanbul also has excellent mobile data coverage.
What are the departure logistics?
The tour departs on Fridays, which makes it ideal as a long weekend trip. You arrive on Friday, sightsee on Saturday and Sunday, and have Monday morning free before the airport transfer. If you want to start on a different day, private departures are available on any date.
What kind of food will we eat?
Istanbul has one of the great food cities of the world. Though only breakfasts are included, you will have multiple free evenings to explore. Must-try dishes include simit (sesame bread rings), lahmacun (thin meat flatbread), balik ekmek (grilled fish sandwich), meze platters, kebabs, and the famous Turkish breakfast spread with cheeses, olives, tomatoes, and honey. The Sultanahmet area and nearby Eminonu neighbourhood have countless options.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water in Istanbul is treated but many visitors prefer bottled water. It is readily available everywhere. A Water-to-Go filter bottle makes a good sustainable alternative.
Is the Istanbul City Break good for solo travellers?
Yes. The small group of up to 20 makes it easy to meet people. Solo travellers join frequently, often as part of a weekend escape. A single supplement is available for a private room.
Do I have to share a room?
Not if you pay the single supplement. Without it, solo travellers may be matched with a same-sex room partner. The boutique hotel setting means standard rooms are comfortable as singles.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 20. The typical group is a mix of couples, solo travellers, and friends taking a city weekend. The Friday departure makes it popular with travellers fitting it around work.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures are available on any date. On a private basis, you can also choose your own guide and hotel, adjust the pace, and add extra activities like an Istanbul cooking class or a private Bosphorus sunset cruise.
Is the Istanbul City Break suitable for kids?
There is no minimum age listed. Istanbul's main sites are engaging for older children. The Grand Bazaar in particular is a sensory adventure. The tour works well for families. Younger children may find the full-day guided sightseeing format tiring.
Do I need a visa for Turkey?
An e-visa is available online before travel for most nationalities including UK, US, Canadian, and Australian passport holders. EU passport holders from some countries are also visa-exempt. Check requirements for your passport on the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Visa fees are not included in the tour price.
What should I pack?
Light layers work well in Istanbul year-round. Women need to cover shoulders and hair when entering mosques - headscarves and wraps are available at mosque entrances, but bringing your own is more comfortable. Comfortable shoes are essential for cobblestones. Turkish sockets are Type F (European round-pin) - standard European adapters work.
Are any vaccinations recommended for Turkey?
No special vaccinations are required for Turkey beyond routine vaccines. Consult your GP or a travel health clinic before departure for personalised advice.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. You book your own flights to Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW). Let us know your arrival airport when booking so we can arrange the correct transfer.
What about tipping?
A tipping kitty is included in the tour price for behind-the-scenes gratuities. Tips for your specialist guide and driver are discretionary and not included. Your guide will advise on local norms at the start of the tour.
Can I add an Istanbul cooking class?
Yes. An Istanbul cooking class is available as an optional extra, where you learn to prepare traditional Turkish dishes. It is a popular choice for the free afternoon on Day 4 before your airport transfer.
Can I extend my stay in Istanbul?
Yes. Pre-tour and post-tour extra nights in Istanbul are available as a paid add-on. The city rewards extra time - neighbourhoods like Beyoglu, Karakoy, and the Asian side across the Bosphorus are all worth exploring independently.
Can I combine this with another Turkey tour?
Yes. If you want to see more of Turkey, contact us about combining the Istanbul City Break with an onward Anatolian Adventure or Best of Turkey tour. We can connect the itineraries.
How far ahead should I book?
The City Break departs every Friday, so availability is generally good. Peak summer and holiday weekends book quickly for the hotel and guide. A few weeks' notice is usually sufficient, but for specific dates book as early as you can.
How does booking work?
Reserve online via the Dates and Prices tab. Pay a deposit or reserve now and pay the balance 8 weeks before departure. Instant confirmation is issued by email.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Travel insurance is compulsory. Your policy must cover medical emergencies, evacuation, and repatriation. World Nomads is our recommended partner.
What is your cancellation policy?
Our terms use a sliding-scale cancellation charge. Full details are in our booking conditions on the website. We are a UK-registered company with financial protection through Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are sold out?
The tour departs every Friday so there are many dates to choose from. If a specific date is full, the following Friday is almost always available. Contact us and we will find the best option.

My partner and I recently had a two-week holiday in Turkey, organised through Encounters Travel. We wanted something tailored to our interests and availability, and Gavin at Encounters created a bespoke version of an existing tour for us. As we worked out what this tour might involve, it necessitated quite a few questions and answers going back and forth, as we refined our plans. Each time Gavin was very prompt to respond, did so in full, and very courteously. Encounters Travel liaised with all of the local agents and catered for everything we had asked for. We ended up having an absolutely fantastic (and wholly unforgettable) holiday, seeing sights that we would never have been able to fit in if we were trying to do it completely by ourselves. On the evidence of this trip, we would very strongly recommend them to others looking for an agent who'll help to take some of the hard work out of planning a holiday.

I bought a ticket thru living social at 3am when I couldn’t sleep and then said to myself “What did I just do?!” turns out what I did was make one of the BEST DECISIONS OF MY LIFE!!! The travel agency was easy to work with and always available via telephone (UK HOURS) I traveled alone for an additional few of 200 or something but they found me a roommate and I elected to take the roomie and get a refund on solo fee (another great decision..roomie was from Vegas and a great guy) I traveled from LA to Turkey and then to Cairo the planes were nice and roomie. They fed ya so much I was stuffed by the time I got to Turkey (tip: TURKEY AIRPORT SUCKS! It’s HUGE,all the gates are far apart and you are only guided by arrows and no one helps you,so move Swift if you have to meet a connecting flight) upon arrival to Cairo I was met by a sharply dressed man with a sign that greeted me in the traditional Muslim greeting and we were immediately friends! He walked me to get my visa ($20 American dollars cash) through customs and it was a breeze...with a guide it’s SPEEDY. We were met by a air condition car (IT WAS HOT) they took me to a hotel across the street from the pyramids and he checked me in. (Tip: Security is HIGH everywhere and you will be searched by security at all times entering and leaving.. you will never feel unsafe. Plan on seeing guards with machine guns in the street and hotels..you will grow accustomed to it) I was there for 10 days and EACH DAY GOT BETTER!! The food, hotels, monuments, experience and PRICE CANNOT BE BEAT!! I crawled inside of the Great Pyramid of Cheops, seen the Sphinx, slept overnight on a felucca on the Nile, took a sleeper train to Aswan, went to a Nubian Village for a traditional dinner, snorkeled in the Red Sea, toured the Cairo Museum,Sunrise Hot Air Ballon ride over the Valley of the Kings, stayed at a luxury all inclusive Sea Side resort in Hurghada, drove thru the Sahara Desert to monuments and witnessed the sunrise, toured downtown Cairo market, visited the Synagogue that Moses worshipped and the well he drank from, and so many things in between and I did it all for UNDER $1550 US dollars. No guess work, this company TAKES CARE OF EVERYTHING!! Our tour guide “Big Mo” was one of the most passionate and insightful people I have ever met. His expertise of Egyptian history and the culture of his people is undeniable. He even went water sliding with me in Hurghada!! I cannot express how fortunate U feel to have had this experience in my lifetime. I was humbled by the people and inspired to see people with my likeness etched in massive stone and in the walls of the monuments and tombs. I met some of the most beautiful people inside and out in this country. They LOVE AMERICANS and they desperately need your tourism. I cannot say enough about this package that Encounters Travel has put together. All vehicles, hotels, restaurants and amenities they took us to were clean and safe. They include some meals the guides can be trusted. Be sure to give them the best tip you can at the end of the tour in AMERICAN MONEY....they will have earned it!! Now the bad....but you can’t escape these; IT’S HOT...no matter when you go (it’s Africa for goodness sake!) you will sweat all the time..so bring something to wipe your face like a few dark hand towels for daily use, hand sanitizer AND A HAND FAN...trust me some air is better then NONE and you can shield your face when the guides talk to you out in the sun but I recommend a fold away umbrella too TRUST ME!!! Only other thing is the street merchants..the first two days you are sympathetic to the plight after that you just instantly become a rude American and ignore them lol. They will try to pressure you, place things in your arm (I opened my arm and let them drop), give you a “free gift” (be warned NOTHING in Egypt is free) and try to pull you away from the group, always consult your guide they will help you steer clear and will help you to not get cheated. Last but MOST IMPORTANTLY when in the monuments, temples and other places NEVER LET A FRIENDLY PERSON HAVE YOU CAMERA TO TAKE PICS OF YOU...they will demand money and try to intimidate you and tell you they work for the Govt and wait for you at the gates if you don’t give them what you want. Just be polite and keep saying “no thank you while walking away” when you get close to your guide they will get the hint and leave you alone. Other than that..go have the TIME OF YOUR LIFE IN EGYPT!!! You will NEVER REGRET IT!

What a GREAT experience! I was a solo traveler and a bit worried but everyone at the office staff answered all my questions promptly assuring me I'd be in an English speaking group. I even missed my initial flight Nd Travel Encounters was able to coordinate my new transfer pick up time in Istanbul. The tour itself was also simply amazing, especially if you like History! Great sites with plenty to do, great itinerary including Troy, Galipoli, Blue Mosque, Haggai Sophia, Ephesus, Artemis, Kayakoy, etc. had a great/same guide and driver for the duration of he trip and all 4 star hotels. Nicely arranged trip, at a nice price. :)

I can really recommend to book a trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL. Stumbled across them by accident when i was searching the net for best prices. Being from South Africa with the weak ZAR they came out tops. Booked the 10 day Anatolian Adventure. All entrance fees was included. Thanks to Mariska for always getting back to me immediately. The tour surpassed my expectations and the accommodation provided was mostly 5 star. The tour guide Ilker (from Fez Travel) was amazing. He was very informative and not forgetting our good driver Irfaan. We had a small group of 10. Overall, a great trip. Worth every penny. Will definitely book my next trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL
