Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Mountains to the Lakes tour?
Mountains to the Lakes is a 21-day overland adventure that takes you from Lima through Peru and into Bolivia, covering the Paracas coast, the Nazca Lines, Colca Canyon, the 4-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, the high plains of Cuzco, Lake Titicaca's floating reed islands, and La Paz. It's one of the most complete South American journeys available, and the small-group format (maximum 14 travellers) means you experience it at human scale rather than as part of a crowd.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to South America?
Yes, though you should know this is not a soft introduction. The 21 days span two countries, involve a 4-day trek to Machu Picchu reaching 4,200m altitude, and include several nights camping. If you're comfortable with an adventurous pace and willing to spend nights under canvas in the Andes, it's an extraordinary first South American experience. If altitude or camping are concerns, a shorter itinerary might be a better starting point.
What's the difference between this and your other South America tours?
Mountains to the Lakes (21 days, Lima to La Paz) is the most comprehensive option, combining the Inca Trail, Nazca, Colca Canyon, and Lake Titicaca. Walking with the Incas (19 days) is focused on Peru and has a slightly shorter scope. Bolivian Encounters (15 days) concentrates on Bolivia from La Paz. If you want the full Lima-to-La Paz sweep including the 4-day Inca Trail, this is the one.
What's the best time of year to do this tour?
Departures run April to November, which avoids the Andean wet season (December to March). The driest and clearest window for the Inca Trail and Colca Canyon is May to September. June and July are peak season. April and October-November offer good conditions with fewer crowds on the trail.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper South America packages. What this includes: 20 nights accommodation, 20 breakfasts, 4 lunches, and 4 dinners, a 4-day Inca Trail permit and guided trek, a Nazca Lines flight, a dune buggy ride at Huacachina, Uros Island and Amantani homestay on Lake Titicaca, professional guides throughout two countries, and all internal transport including a sleeper bus and train. The Inca Trail permit alone has to be booked months in advance and forms a significant part of the cost.
What's actually included in the price?
Included: 20 nights accommodation (guesthouses and simple hotels plus 3 nights camping on the Inca Trail), 20 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 4 dinners, Nazca Lines flight, dune buggy at Huacachina, 4-day Inca Trail with permit and guide, Uros Island boat trip, Amantani island homestay, Taquile Island visit, all internal transport (buses, sleeper bus, train), and all entrance fees listed in the itinerary.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, travel insurance, lunches on most days, personal spending, and tips for guides and drivers are excluded. The Bolivian visa costs vary by nationality. Your guide will brief current tipping recommendations at the start of the tour. Budget for roughly 17 lunches independently plus any optional activities.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve with a deposit and pay the balance 8 weeks before departure. The reserve-now-pay-later option lets you lock in your Inca Trail permit (which is date-specific and sells out fast) without paying everything upfront.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Strenuous, particularly during the 4-day Inca Trail. The trail reaches 4,200m altitude, involves multi-hour daily hikes, and includes the Dead Woman's Pass. Colca Canyon (900m deep) also involves significant walking. You need to be in genuine good physical health and comfortable trekking for several hours a day with a day pack. The rest of the itinerary is moderate.
How do you handle altitude sickness?
The itinerary includes acclimatisation time in Cuzco and Arequipa before the Inca Trail. However, altitude affects people differently regardless of age or fitness. Symptoms at 3,400m+ (Cuzco) can include headaches, fatigue, and nausea. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol for the first couple of days, and consult your GP about altitude medication before departure. Your guide will monitor the group throughout.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
The Inca Trail demands a realistic level of fitness that's more relevant than age. Many travellers in their 50s and 60s complete it without issue; some younger travellers struggle. Be honest with yourself about your trekking fitness. If you're in good shape and have trekked at altitude before, age is not a barrier.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The 4-day Inca Trail is not suitable for anyone with significant mobility limitations. There is an alternative route to Machu Picchu by train (from Aguas Calientes), but swapping out the trek changes the character of the tour significantly. If this is a concern, Walking with the Incas (19 days) or a private itinerary with a train-only Machu Picchu access may suit you better.
Is Peru safe to visit?
Peru is one of the most visited countries in South America. The tourist trail from Lima to Cuzco to Machu Picchu is well-established and well-supported. As with any destination, standard city-sense around pickpocketing applies, particularly in markets. Your guide will brief you on current local conditions at the start of the tour.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Solo female travellers are well represented on this tour. The group setting and small size (maximum 14) provides natural security and community. As with any South American city, some normal urban awareness is sensible, particularly at night, but this is not a dangerous destination for women.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide is your first call. Peru and Bolivia have private medical facilities in all major cities on this route including Lima, Arequipa, Cuzco, and La Paz. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is compulsory. At altitude, your guide is trained to recognise altitude sickness symptoms and can arrange descent or medical attention.
What happens in a medical emergency at altitude?
If someone in the group develops serious altitude sickness on the Inca Trail or elsewhere above 3,000m, the guide will arrange descent immediately. The priority is always to get the affected person to lower altitude. Travel insurance must cover rescue at altitude; ensure your policy explicitly covers trekking to 4,200m.
What's the accommodation actually like?
Accommodation is in guesthouses and simple hotels throughout. You stay at Hotel Buena Vista in Lima, Casa De Mi Abuela in Arequipa, Andean South Inn in Cuzco, Hotel Italia in Puno, and Hotel Estrella Andina in La Paz. Rooms are comfortable, clean, and en-suite. Three nights are camping on the Inca Trail itself, and there's an overnight homestay with a family on Amantani Island on Lake Titicaca.
What are the camping nights like?
"Camping on the Inca Trail is classic trekking lodge-camping: tents are provided (or clarify with us what's supplied for your departure), there are basic toilet facilities at campsites, and the setting is genuinely spectacular. The Amantani homestay on Lake Titicaca is a different kind of memorable: you stay with a local island family, eat with them, and experience life on the world's highest navigable lake at 3,812m."
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Hotels in Lima, Arequipa, Cuzco, Puno, and La Paz generally have Wi-Fi. On the 4-day Inca Trail there is no connectivity. The Amantani Island homestay has no Wi-Fi. Enjoy the digital detox: the Andean views are worth it.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
This is a budget-conscious itinerary and the accommodation is honest about being simple rather than boutique. If you'd like to upgrade specific nights, particularly in Cuzco or Lima, speak to us when booking. A private departure gives the most flexibility for accommodation upgrades throughout.
What kind of food will we eat?
South American cuisine is varied and hearty. Peruvian food in particular is world-class: ceviche, lomo saltado, and fresh market produce in Cuzco are highlights. On the Inca Trail, meals are cooked by trail cooks. The Amantani homestay meal is a genuine Andean home-cooked dinner. In Bolivia, try the local salteanas and hearty stews. Koshary-style communal meals are part of the experience on trek days.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled or filtered water throughout Peru and Bolivia. Don't drink tap water, and be cautious with ice in smaller establishments. A reusable bottle with a filter, such as a Water-to-Go bottle, is a smart investment for the trail sections and reduces plastic waste.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Excellent. The 21-day format means you have plenty of time to build real friendships within the group, and the shared challenges of the Inca Trail and altitude create fast bonds. Many solo travellers say this is one of the best group-travel experiences they've had.
Do I have to share a room?
A single supplement is available if you want your own room in hotels. On the Inca Trail camping nights and the Amantani homestay, single rooms may not be available due to the nature of those accommodations. We'll brief you fully at booking.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Minimum 2, maximum 14 travellers. This is a deliberately small group, which makes for a much more personal experience in the Andean markets, on the reed islands, and at Machu Picchu compared with larger coach tours.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. A private departure for couples, families, or groups can be arranged. Contact us to discuss dates and any tailoring you'd like.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The Inca Trail trek to 4,200m and the physical demands of this itinerary mean it's best suited to teenagers and adults who can trek independently. Young children would find the altitude and multi-day trekking very challenging. If you're travelling with younger family members, ask us about alternative Peru options.
Do I need a visa?
Most nationalities do not need a visa for Peru (typically 90 days on arrival). For Bolivia: UK, Australian, New Zealand, and Canadian passport holders don't require a visa; US citizens can obtain one on arrival. Check current requirements on your country's official immigration guidance well before departure.
What should I pack?
Layered clothing is essential: the Amazon-influenced Cusco basin can be warm at midday and cold at night, and temperatures drop sharply on the Inca Trail above 4,000m. Trekking boots (broken in), a rain jacket, warm hat and gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a day pack are all necessary. Lima is coastal and warm. Bring your own sleeping bag or hire one.
Are any vaccinations required?
For Peru: Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid are recommended. For Bolivia: the same, plus Yellow Fever is recommended and may be required as proof of vaccination to enter. Consult your GP or travel health clinic at least 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. Fly into Lima (Jorge Chavez International Airport) and depart from La Paz (El Alto International Airport). We can give flight suggestions but booking is yours to handle. Book flights only after your tour booking is confirmed.
What about tipping?
Tipping is an important part of the local economy in Peru and Bolivia. Your guide will brief you on current recommended amounts for the group at the start of the tour. The Inca Trail cooks and porters are customarily tipped separately; your guide will explain the structure.
How should I train for the Inca Trail?
Start training at least 2-3 months before departure. Focus on cardiovascular fitness and leg strength: regular hiking with a loaded day pack, stair training, and long walks on varied terrain. Altitude cannot be replicated at sea level, but good aerobic fitness makes a significant difference to how your body copes with it.
Can I fly over the Nazca Lines?
Yes. A flight over the Nazca Lines geoglyphs is included in the itinerary. These enormous figures, visible only from the air, are one of archaeology's great mysteries and a highlight of the Peru section of the trip.
Can I do the dune buggy at Huacachina?
Yes. A dune buggy ride at the Huacachina Oasis is included. The oasis sits inside enormous sand dunes in the Peruvian desert and the buggy experience is exhilarating.
Can I extend with a Bolivian Encounters tour?
If you want to spend more time in Bolivia, ask us about combining Mountains to the Lakes with Bolivian Encounters (15 days). The tours share La Paz as a junction point and can be linked.
How far ahead should I book?
The Inca Trail requires a permit that is issued for a specific date and sells out many months in advance (sometimes over a year for peak season). Book as early as possible. Aim for at least 6 months ahead for April-August departures.
How does booking work?
Reserve online with a deposit and receive instant confirmation. We will then secure your Inca Trail permit for the correct date. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. It must include medical evacuation and repatriation, and must explicitly cover trekking to 4,200m altitude. World Nomads is a good option for adventurous itineraries like this one.
What's your cancellation policy?
A sliding-scale policy applies, with charges increasing closer to departure. Full terms are in the booking conditions. As a UK-registered operator protected by Trust My Travel, your money is financially protected.
What if my dates are sold out?
Join the waitlist for your preferred departure. Alternatively, Walking with the Incas (19 days) or Bolivian Encounters (15 days) may have availability, or we can arrange a private departure on different dates.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Accommodation

We use good quality small & simple hotels & guesthouses on this tour. Tours visiting the Oasis of Huacachina and the Inca trail trek will also include four nights camping.

Accommodation is based on dorm, twin, triple or double en-suite rooms. We will endeavour to give all couples a private double room. Single travellers may choose to pay a single room supplement to guarantee themselves a single room throughout the tour. Alternatively, they may choose to share a room with one or two other travellers of the same sex. If there are no other single travellers available for you to pair up with at the time of your booking, then we will need to add the single supplement to your tour price, but will refund this or deduct it from your balance payment if we are able to pair you up later on.

Please be aware that hotels in Peru can suffer from common problems such as electrical failure, plumbing faults and other technical difficulties and hot water may occasionally be temperamental if a lot of people are using the showers at the same time. This is a possibility throughout all classes of hotels.

On the Classic Inca trail tents are provided and sleeping bags can be hired locally if you don't want to bring your own.
