Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Tonga Whale Encounters tour?
Tonga Whale Encounters is our unique 10-day small-group trip to one of the only places on Earth where you can legally swim with wild Humpback whales. You spend two nights at the 3-star Seaview Lodge in Nuku'alofa and then seven nights at Kite Surf Tonga's solar-powered beach fales on the remote Ha'apai island of Uoleva. Three whale swimming safaris are included, plus free use of paddleboards, kayaks, and snorkelling gear, a 2-hour sustainability tour of the off-grid resort, and an unforgettable farewell bonfire under the Milky Way. Groups run just 2-10 people (maximum 8 on whale safaris).
Is this tour suitable for first-time whale swimmers?
Yes, and it attracts many people doing this for the first time. The crew brief you thoroughly before each safari on behaviour around the whales. The main requirement is that you can swim comfortably in open water. The whales set the agenda: you enter the water slowly and follow their lead.
What is the difference between this and your other Tonga tours?
Tonga Whale Encounters is specifically designed around Humpback whale swimming in Ha'apai, one of Tonga's more remote island groups. If you are looking for a different Pacific itinerary, contact our sales team to discuss options.
When does the tour run and what is the best time to go?
The tour runs exclusively from mid-July to mid-October, when Humpback whales migrate to Tonga's warm waters to breed and calf. There is no whale swimming outside this window. Within the season, August and September tend to have the highest whale concentrations.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, this is a premium trip. But Tonga Whale Encounters includes three dedicated whale swimming safaris with a specialist crew, domestic return flights between Tongatapu and Ha'apai, 7 nights at an award-winning solar-powered eco-resort, 6 nights accommodation at the Seaview Lodge, 9 breakfasts, 6 lunches, and 7 dinners, free paddleboard and kayak use, the sustainability tour, and all transfers. Getting to Ha'apai and operating responsible whale swims is genuinely expensive.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 2 nights at Seaview Lodge (Nuku'alofa), 7 nights at Kite Surf Tonga beach fales (Uoleva Island), domestic return flights Tongatapu-Ha'apai, 3 whale swimming safaris, all transfers, 9 breakfasts, 6 lunches, 7 dinners, free paddleboard, kayak and snorkelling gear hire, 2-hour sustainability tour of the off-grid resort, and English-speaking guide.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, travel insurance, tips, drinks, personal expenses, and any optional extras such as the Tongan feast. Your guide will brief you on current tipping norms at the start of the trip.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit to secure your place and the balance 8 weeks before departure. You can also hold a reservation while you plan.
How physically demanding is this tour?
The whale swims require you to be a confident swimmer in open ocean water. You need to be able to enter the water quickly from the boat and swim at pace to keep up with the whales. There is a maximum weight of 120kg for using the boat ladder. Beyond the swims, the rest of the tour is relaxed.
Is the whale swimming suitable for non-swimmers?
No. You must be able to swim comfortably in open sea conditions. Strong swimmers who are confident with snorkelling gear get the most from the experience.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
The tour is suitable for fit, confident swimmers of any age. The maximum weight limit of 120kg applies to the boat ladder. As long as you are comfortable in open water, age is not a barrier.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The boat ladder and open ocean conditions require a reasonable level of physical fitness and mobility. If you have concerns, contact us before booking to discuss whether this tour is suitable.
Is Tonga safe to visit right now?
Tonga is a peaceful Pacific island nation with very low crime and a welcoming culture. The main practical consideration is the remoteness: medical facilities in Ha'apai are very limited. Comprehensive travel insurance with emergency evacuation cover is essential.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Tonga is very safe for solo female travellers. Tongans are deeply hospitable. Sunday is a day of rest and quiet in Tonga (a strongly Christian country), which your guide will brief you on.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Medical facilities on Uoleva Island are very limited. For anything serious, evacuation to Nuku'alofa or Fiji would be required. This is why comprehensive travel insurance with emergency medical evacuation cover is not just compulsory but critically important on this tour.
What is the accommodation actually like?
Seaview Lodge in Nuku'alofa is a comfortable 3-star hotel with sea views. The Ha'apai accommodation is at Kite Surf Tonga on Uoleva Island, a renowned solar-powered eco-resort with private beach fales (bungalows) steps from the water. Fales have en-suite bathrooms, mosquito nets, and fans. The resort is completely off-grid: solar power, composting toilets, and a working hydroponics garden.
What is the off-grid eco-resort like?
Kite Surf Tonga on Uoleva Island is one of the most unique places you will stay. Completely powered by solar energy, with composting systems and a hydroponics setup, the 2-hour sustainability tour on Day 4 explains how the whole operation works. It combines genuine eco-credentials with beautiful beach surroundings and excellent food.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is available at Seaview Lodge in Nuku'alofa. On Uoleva Island the resort is off-grid and connectivity is minimal to non-existent. This is the point: you are there to disconnect and focus on the ocean and the whales.
Can I upgrade?
The accommodation on this tour is specific to the eco-resort, which does not have a formal upgrade category. Contact us to discuss private departure options.
What kind of food will we eat?
The resort kitchen produces generous, fresh meals using local produce. Meals are communal and social. Breakfasts are typically tropical fruit, eggs, and toast. Lunches and dinners mix local Tongan dishes with international options. The included 6 lunches and 7 dinners reflect the island-stay focus.
Can you cater for vegetarian vegan or gluten-free diets?
Vegetarian and most dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice. The source notes that full vegan menus are not available at the resort, so please contact us to discuss your specific needs before booking.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Use bottled or filtered water throughout Tonga. The resort's water system is treated, but a Water-to-Go filter bottle is a good travel companion throughout the trip.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Excellent for solo travellers. The tiny group size (max 10) means it functions like a close-knit private adventure. The shared experience of swimming with wild Humpback whales is an extraordinary bonding environment.
Do I have to share a room?
The tour price is based on twin-sharing at the Seaview Lodge. At the resort fales are private for couples; solo travellers may share a fale. A single supplement is available. Check at booking for current room-share options.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
The tour runs with 2-10 travellers, with a strict maximum of 8 in the water during whale safaris. Expect a passionate group of ocean and wildlife enthusiasts.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes, private departures for couples or small groups are possible. Contact our sales team for pricing.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
No minimum age is specified, but the open-ocean whale swimming requires confident swimming ability. The remoteness and limited medical facilities mean it is not ideal for young children. Contact us to discuss.
Do I need a visa for Tonga?
UK, EU, US, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand passport holders do not need a visa for Tonga for stays up to 31 days. Other nationalities should check with the nearest Tongan consulate.
What should I pack?
Swimwear is central. Bring a wetsuit or rash guard for whale swims (the water can be fresh), quick-dry clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, insect repellent, a dry bag, and a good underwater camera if you have one. Tonga uses Type I (Australian) plugs at 240V. Pack light: domestic flights have luggage limits.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations for Tonga include Hepatitis A and Tetanus. There is no malaria risk. Consult your GP or travel clinic.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. You fly into Fua'amotu International Airport (TBU) on Tongatapu. Domestic flights between Tongatapu and Ha'apai are included in the tour price. Tour departures are on Thursdays.
What about tipping?
Tipping is appreciated. Your guide will advise on appropriate amounts for the whale safari crew, resort staff, and guide at the start of the tour.
Can I add a Tongan feast?
Yes. A traditional Tongan feast (Umu feast) is an optional extra that can be arranged locally. Ask your guide on arrival.
How far ahead should I book?
The whale season runs mid-July to mid-October only, and group sizes are tiny. Departures sell out well in advance. Book six months or more ahead to secure your preferred dates.
How does booking work?
Complete the online reservation form. Pay a deposit or hold a reservation. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, compulsory, and critically important on this tour given the remote location and limited local medical facilities. Insurance must cover emergency medical evacuation. World Nomads covers a wide range of water activities.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale of charges applies depending on how far before departure you cancel. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Trust My Travel financial protection covers your funds against company insolvency.
What if my dates are already sold out?
Contact us. Given the very limited group size, we recommend joining the waitlist as cancellations do occur. We can also discuss a private departure in the same whale season window.
