Why book the Vietnam Family Adventure tour?
Vietnam Family Adventure is our 13-day family-focused introduction to Vietnam, running from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. It packs in the best of the country with activities specifically chosen for families: a guided tour of Hanoi's Old Quarter by cyclo, a hands-on Vietnamese cooking class at the Hanoi Cooking Centre, two nights on a traditional junk boat in Halong Bay including kayaking and swimming, a visit to the UNESCO-listed riverside town of Hoi An, and a tour of the cramped Cu Chi tunnels used by Vietnamese soldiers. Groups are capped at 16, a local guide handles all logistics, and the itinerary includes an internal flight from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City to avoid a long overland leg.
Is this tour suitable for families with young children?
The tour has a minimum group size of 3, which means it works well for families booking together. Activities like the Halong Bay junk boat, the cyclo tour, the water puppet show and the cooking class all work brilliantly for kids. The Cu Chi tunnels have genuine wow factor for older children. The tour can also be booked privately for your family exclusively. Get in touch and we will help work out whether the pace suits your children's ages.
What is the difference between this and your other Vietnam tours?
Vietnam Family Adventure (13 days) is designed with family activities and pacing in mind. Vietnam Encounters (10 days) covers similar highlights but skips the opening cultural days, focusing on the classic Hanoi, Halong, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City route. Ultimate Vietnam (13 days) adds rural homestay nights in Mai Chau and Pu Luong Reserve, a street food walk, and a Mekong Delta eco-lodge, making it more off-the-beaten-track. If 13 days is too long, consider Vietnam Encounters.
What is the best time of year to visit Vietnam with a family?
Vietnam is a long, thin country with distinct regional climates. The northern end (Hanoi, Halong Bay) is best from October to April, with mild, drier weather. Central Vietnam (Hoi An) is driest from February to August. The south (Ho Chi Minh City) is warm year-round, with a dry season from December to April. Travelling in October to March gives you the best overall conditions across all three regions.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
Your price covers 12 nights in 2 to 4-star hotels, a 2-night junk boat cruise on Halong Bay, a sleeper train, all transport and transfers, a 24-hour airport service, entrance fees, sightseeing tours with local guides, a cooking class, and the internal flight from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City. Running a family tour with a trained guide who is experienced at managing different ages and keeping everyone engaged is a very different product from a standard group departure.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: all accommodation as stated, all transport and transfers, 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfers, services of a local guide during sightseeing and activities, admission fees with instruction where necessary, an internal flight from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City, and meals as indicated (11 breakfasts, 8 lunches, 2 dinners).
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, meals not listed, drinks, snacks, tips, and personal expenses. For non-UK nationals a visa letter arrangement may be needed; your guide will brief current amounts at booking. Budget for some spending money for street food, souvenirs in Hoi An, and optional activities.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can hold a reservation, pay a deposit, or pay in full at booking. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure. Private family-only bookings work the same way.
How physically demanding is this tour for kids and adults?
Moderate. Most activities are accessible for families with children aged roughly 8 and above. The junk boat involves getting on and off by tender, and there is kayaking and swimming. The cyclo ride and water puppet show are very easy. The Cu Chi tunnels involve crawling through narrow passages which is optional. There is no strenuous trekking. The sleeper train requires climbing into a 4-berth cabin berth.
What if a family member has mobility issues?
The junk boat boarding and sleeper train berths are the main physical requirements to consider. The sleeper train has upper and lower berths and a ladder is provided for the upper tier. Couples or families can pay a supplement to book all 4 berths in a cabin for privacy. Please discuss specific mobility needs with us before booking so we can advise properly.
How hot does Vietnam get?
The south of Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City) is warm year-round at around 27-35°C. Hanoi has cooler winters (15-20°C in December to February) and hot humid summers. The Halong Bay boat days are pleasant with a sea breeze. Bring lightweight, breathable clothing, high-SPF sunscreen, and a hat for outdoor days.
Is Vietnam safe for families?
Yes. Vietnam is one of Southeast Asia's most family-friendly destinations. Crime targeting tourists is low, the food culture is excellent, and locals are genuinely welcoming to children. Your local guide handles all logistics and knows how to navigate busy traffic areas safely. Ho Chi Minh City in particular has fast, chaotic traffic that your guide will help you cross safely.
Is it safe for women and solo female parents travelling with kids?
Yes, absolutely. Vietnam is among the safer Southeast Asian countries for women. Our local female and male guides are experienced at managing family groups and ensuring everyone feels comfortable at all times.
What happens if someone in my family gets sick on tour?
Your guide is your first point of contact. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have good private hospitals and clinics experienced with tourist patients. Hoi An has clinics as well. Travel insurance with full family medical cover is compulsory.
What is the accommodation actually like?
You stay in 2 to 4-star hotels, a traditional junk boat, and a sleeper train. In Hanoi the typical hotel is the Authentic Hotel in the Old Quarter close to Hoan Kiem Lake. In Halong Bay you are on the Dynasty Cruise, a 5-star junk boat with private balcony cabins. In Hoi An the Ancient House Resort offers pool, gym, and a cooking class. In Ho Chi Minh City the Silverland Ben Thanh is centrally located near Ben Thanh Market.
What is the junk boat like for families?
The Dynasty Cruise is one of Halong Bay's top junk boats, offering deluxe balcony cabins through to suites. Families can book adjacent or connecting cabins. There is a sun deck, kayaking and swimming stops, and a cooking class on board. The two nights on the bay are consistently rated among families' top memories of the tour.
What is the sleeper train like?
Vietnam's air-conditioned trains are safe and comfortable. You are in a shared 4-berth cabin with bedding provided. Families who want a private cabin can pay a supplement to book all 4 berths. The journey is overnight, so most passengers sleep through it. The experience of waking up to the Vietnamese countryside is genuinely wonderful.
Will we have Wi-Fi?
Yes in all hotels. The junk boat has Wi-Fi in common areas. The sleeper train does not. A Vietnamese SIM card from the airport is a very affordable way to have data for the whole trip.
What kind of food will we eat?
Vietnamese cuisine is fresh, flavourful and hugely varied. Hotel breakfasts are buffet-style with a mix of local and Western options. Included meals feature dishes like pho (noodle soup), banh mi, fresh spring rolls, com tam (broken rice), and dishes prepared during the cooking class. The junk boat serves full Vietnamese meals. Street food at the family's own pace is a major highlight, with your guide pointing out the safest and most delicious stalls.
Can you cater for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets?
Yes. Vietnamese cuisine is naturally rich in vegetable, tofu and noodle dishes that work well for vegetarians. Vegan eating is generally very manageable with notice. Gluten-free is possible with planning. Let us know at booking and we will brief the local guide and hotels.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth. Bottled water is cheap and available everywhere. The hotels provide safe water for hot drinks. A Water-to-Go filter bottle is a good option for reducing plastic during the trip.
Is this trip good for solo parents or solo adults joining a family tour?
Yes. The tour accepts solo bookings. Solo adults joining will find themselves with families and other travellers. The guide manages the group so that adults with and without children have a great experience. A single room supplement is available for solo travellers who want their own room.
What is the group size?
Groups have a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 16 travellers. The family format keeps groups smaller than our standard departures. The tour can also be booked privately for just your family.
Can I book this as a private family tour?
Yes, and it is a popular option. A private departure means just your family, on dates of your choosing, with the guide and pace customised to your children's ages and interests. Contact us for details.
Do I need a visa for Vietnam?
Visa requirements vary by nationality. UK nationals currently have visa-free access for certain durations. Other nationalities may need a visa letter arrangement, with a stamp fee paid on arrival. Check current requirements for your nationality before booking.
What should I pack?
Lightweight, breathable clothing, modest options for temple visits (shoulders and knees covered), swimwear for the Halong Bay boat, comfortable walking shoes, a light rain jacket, insect repellent, high-SPF sunscreen, a small daypack, and a plug adapter (Vietnam uses Type A/C sockets at 220V). Pack a small bag of entertainment for children for the sleeper train.
Are any vaccinations recommended?
No vaccinations are legally required for entry from most countries. Typically recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Diphtheria. Malaria risk is low in the main tourist areas. Check with your GP or a travel clinic 6 to 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. The tour starts at Hanoi airport (HAN) and ends at Ho Chi Minh City airport (SGN). You book whatever international flights suit you. We are happy to help arrange flights if you prefer.
What about tipping?
Tipping is appreciated and is an important part of Vietnamese service culture. Your guide will brief appropriate current amounts at the start of the tour for guides, drivers and hotel staff.
Can I add a Cambodia extension?
Yes. A Cambodia extension is available, letting you continue from Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap and Angkor Wat before flying home. It is a natural next destination from southern Vietnam and one of Southeast Asia's most spectacular sites.
Can I add extra days in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City?
Yes. An extra day in Hanoi at the start and an extra day in Ho Chi Minh City at the end are both available as paid options, staying in the same hotels as the main tour. Useful for arrival day adjustment or more time in these vibrant cities.
Can I upgrade the junk boat cabin?
The Dynasty Cruise offers a range of cabin grades from Deluxe Balcony to Premium Suites. Families can also book adjacent cabins or pay a supplement to take all 4 berths in a sleeper train cabin for privacy. Ask at booking.
How far ahead should I book?
Halong Bay junk boat cabins and popular departure dates fill up 3 to 4 months ahead, especially during school holiday periods. Private family bookings need as much lead time as possible to secure preferred dates. We recommend booking as early as you can.
How does booking work?
Reserve your spot online via the Dates and Prices tab. Pay a deposit, full amount, or hold a reservation. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure. Private family bookings are confirmed by contacting us directly. You receive instant confirmation and a pre-departure information pack.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, it is compulsory for all travellers including children. Your policy must cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation and repatriation for every family member. We partner with World Nomads. Send us all policy numbers before departure.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations made well ahead of departure receive a refund of payments made. Closer-in cancellations attract fees on a sliding scale. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Encounters Travel is UK-registered with financial protection via Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are already sold out?
Get in touch. We can check for cancellations, add you to a waitlist, run a private family departure on different dates, or suggest Vietnam Encounters or Ultimate Vietnam as alternatives with availability.
