DAY 13

Reverse-route mountain hike to Petra via Little Petra

Day 13 Breakfast Petra Elite Hotel, Petra Moon Hotel
Today is all about exploring the Nabatean site of Petra. It was once the ancient capital of the Nabataean commercial empire until the Romans finally took over in 106AD. For a long period of time, Petra was forgotten - except by the local Bedouins - before it was rediscovered in 1812 by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. Petra can be found at the edge of the Wadi Aruba desert, where canyon walls and towering hills make it virtually impossible to reach, except via a narrow cleft in the rock, known as the Siq. There are very few free-standing buildings in Petra, as the Nabateans chose to carve their dwellings into the multi coloured sandstone cliffs. Petra has become one of Jordan's main tourist attractions and the Jordanian Government is well aware of this. The tourism infrastructure in the adjoining village of Wadi Musa is booming, though, thankfully, once you enter through the Siq, the site is protected, there aren't that many touts or souvenir sellers, and all the building feels miles away. We have most of the day available today to explore this ancient city, though as an added bonus, we'll be exploring Petra via the back-route which starts at Little Petra. Before embarking on our hike into Petra, we'll explore the small but equally interesting site of Little Petra, or Siq al-Barid. From here we'll take a short jeep ride to the start of the mountail trail which links Little Petra to the Monastery and main site of Petra. The back-route into Petra makes for an interesting and much less crowded way of visiting, and what's more, you'll be rewarded with incredible mountain views towards the Holy Land. Whilst hiking the back-route you'll still have the opportunity to see all of the same monuments visited on the normal route, with the addition of Little Petra and the Monastery. The route starts with the ascent of a number of rock hewn steps and paths which straddle the mountain edge. After reaching a plateau, there is an opportunity to stop for refreshments at a small cafe from where you'll have some fantastic photo opportunities. From here the path continues until you'll have a glimpse of 'Ad-Deir' (or the Monastery) where you can have a well deserved rest before descending down into the main site of Petra. Once in Petra the valley opens out, and you'll see tombs carved into the rock on both sides. You'll get a glimpse of the ruined Roman amphitheatre and colonnaded streets. As we continue through the ancient city of Petra, we'll eventually reach The Khazneh (Treasury) which is probably the most familiar monument of Petra. Whilst the back-route hike into Petra isn't particularly difficult, as a number of ascents/descents and a significant number of steps are required, this route is only suitable for those who have no issue in hiking in this type of terrain for a minimum of 2-3 hours as far as the Monastery and then a further few hours walking on sandy terrain, whilst exploring the main site of Petra. For those with less mobility or who are worried about the distance, horse carriages are available for around 20JD (USD 28) for an agreed period of time (only available within the main site of Petra, not on the hiking route). We do not recommend riding the horses that are available.

Activities

  • Visit Little Petra (Siq al-Barid) Explore Little Petra, a smaller Nabataean site featuring carved façades, narrow passages, and ancient frescoes. The area provides a fascinating introduction to the region before beginning the back-route hike into Petra.
  • Drive Little Petra → Trailhead (Jeep Ride) Take a short jeep transfer from Little Petra to the mountain trailhead. This quick ride positions you at the starting point of the scenic back-route trail leading into the Petra highlands.
  • Hike Little Petra → Petra Begin your adventure with a scenic hike from Little Petra along the mountain trail leading into the main site of Petra. This lesser-travelled back route offers stunning desert views, peaceful solitude, and a rewarding arrival at the magnificent Monastery before descending into the ancient city below.
  • Visit the Monastery (Ad-Deir) Climb the famous stone staircase to reach the Monastery, one of Petra's most impressive monuments. Its enormous façade offers panoramic views across Wadi Araba and the surrounding desert. A rewarding trek for adventurous visitors.
  • Explore Petra Main Site Spend the day exploring Petra, Jordan's breathtaking Nabataean capital and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Walk through the Siq to the Treasury, admire the carved tombs and temples, and trace the ancient colonnaded streets that once thrived with traders and pilgrims.
  • Visit the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) Visit Petra's world-famous Treasury, a stunning façade carved into rose-red sandstone cliffs. Learn about its Nabataean design, cultural significance, and the legends surrounding its purpose. A highlight of any tour through Petra.
  • Visit the Roman Amphitheatre in Jordan Visit Petra's ancient Roman amphitheatre, carved largely into the rock and later expanded by the Romans. With space for thousands of spectators, it highlights the blend of Nabataean and Roman design. The structure sits prominently within the heart of the archaeological site.
  • Walk the Colonnaded Street Walk along Petra's ancient colonnaded street, once the commercial heart of the city. The remains of columns, shops, and public buildings line this broad avenue. A major axis of the archaeological site.
DAY 14

Day 14 Breakfast Dead Sea Spa Resort
The included programme changes by season. • Dead Sea swim / float Relax and float effortlessly in the mineral-rich waters of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth. After your day's adventure, unwind at your resort, enjoy the therapeutic mud, and capture the iconic newspaper photo as you drift on the surface.
DAY 15

Madaba, Mount Nebo and Roman Jerash

Day 15 Breakfast La Casa Hotel, Al Qasr Metropole, Corp Hotel
After a restful night we head to nearby Madaba, where we'll marvel at the Byzantine mosaics and the 'Madaba Map' - which is the oldest preserved map of the Holy Land. From Madaba, we'll make our way to Mount Nebo, the place where the prophet Moses looked across the Promised Land and is also his burial place. On a clear day, which is most of the time, you get great views towards Jericho and beyond from here. Our final visit of the day is to the ancient city of Jerash - known for being one of the largest and well-preserved Greco-Roman cities outside of Europe. Once we arrive in Jerash, we'll visit the Forum, explore its Roman colonnaded streets, the Nymphaeum and the Temple of Artemis - built on one of the highest points in the city. We end our day with a return drive to Amman, where we'll spend our final night in Jordan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Egypt & Jordan by Land tour?
Egypt and Jordan by Land is a 16-day adventure from Cairo to Amman that layers the ancient world's greatest monuments onto a journey that feels genuinely different from a standard group tour. You sleep on a Nile felucca sailboat under the stars with a Nubian crew, spend 2 nights on sleeper trains, camp with Bedouin hosts beneath the towering red rocks of Wadi Rum, explore Petra via the back-route mountain hike through Little Petra, float in the Dead Sea, and hike the Wadi Mujib gorge. Between these adventures you visit the Pyramids and Sphinx, Luxor's Valley of the Kings, the temples at Philae, Edfu and Karnak, and the Roman city of Jerash. Groups are capped at 18.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Egypt and Jordan?
Yes, this is one of the most complete introductions to both countries. The itinerary follows Egypt's greatest ancient sites down the Nile from Cairo to Aswan, then crosses into Jordan for Wadi Rum, Petra, the Dead Sea and Jerash. The transport mix (felucca, sleeper train, Bedouin camp) is part of the experience and is carefully managed to ensure it is comfortable and safe.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
October to April is the best period, when temperatures are comfortable for sightseeing. The Pyramids and Luxor West Bank are most enjoyable outside of summer heat. The Wadi Mujib gorge hike (Day 14) is only possible between April and October when water levels are manageable. Outside this period, the itinerary substitutes a visit to the Bethany Baptism Site. Summer (June to August) is very hot in both Egypt and Jordan but the tour runs year-round.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Egypt tours floating around. Egypt and Jordan by Land includes 11 nights in 3 to 5-star hotels, a night on a Nile felucca with a dedicated facilities boat (hot showers, hygienic kitchen), 2 nights on sleeper trains, a night at a Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum with Zarb underground cooking and optional camel ride, an international ferry from Taba to Aqaba, and a full local Egyptologist guide for all sightseeing in Egypt plus an English-speaking guide in Jordan. The itinerary is genuinely complex to run well.
What is actually included in the price?
11 nights in 3 to 5-star hotels (including the Steigenberger Nile Palace in Luxor), 1 night on a Nile felucca with facilities boat, 2 nights on sleeper trains, 1 night Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum, 24-hour airport arrival and departure service, all road transport in AC vehicles, all sightseeing tours as detailed in the itinerary, 4x4 jeep safari and Bedouin experience in Wadi Rum, English-speaking guide in Jordan, local Egyptologist guide in Egypt, the international Taba-Aqaba ferry, and meals as listed (15 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 4 dinners).
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, Egypt and Jordan visa fees, Egypt entrance fees (budget approximately the equivalent of around USD 90 for the main sites), Jordan site entrance fees (reduced if you purchase the Jordan Pass in advance, which also covers the Jordan visa), a tipping kitty for Egypt, tips in Jordan, travel insurance, Christmas or New Year gala dinner supplements, and meals not in the itinerary are not included. Your guide will brief you on current amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit, use our reserve-now-pay-later option, or pay in full at booking. Balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is Egypt & Jordan by Land?
This is a moderate-level tour. The Petra back-route hike via Little Petra involves 2 to 3 hours of mountain trail hiking with rock-hewn steps and descents, followed by several more hours walking through the main Petra site. This is the most physically demanding day on the tour. The Wadi Mujib gorge hike involves walking through shallow water, climbing small waterfalls, and takes around 2 to 3 hours roundtrip. The rest of the tour is sightseeing at ancient monuments.
What if I have mobility issues?
The Petra hike and Wadi Mujib gorge trail require a reasonable level of fitness and are not suitable for those with significant mobility limitations. At Petra, horse carriages are available for the main site (not the hiking section) for those who prefer not to walk the full distance. If mobility is a concern, contact us and we can discuss alternatives for the Jordan section.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
The Egypt section (Pyramids, Luxor, Aswan, Dahab) is very manageable for older travellers. The Petra back-route hike is the section to think carefully about. We recommend that travellers 65+ who want to do the full hike are comfortable with a 2-3 hour mountain walk on rocky terrain. The Wadi Mujib gorge trail is also water-based and requires some climbing over small waterfalls.
Is Egypt safe to visit?
Egypt's main tourist sites (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Dahab) are well-policed and visited by millions of international tourists annually. We monitor official government travel advisories continuously and have operated in Egypt for many years. Standard precautions apply: keep valuables secure, follow your guide's advice, and carry travel insurance.
Is Jordan safe to visit?
Jordan is one of the most stable and safest countries in the Middle East, and Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea are established international tourism destinations with excellent security. The Jordanian government places high importance on tourist safety.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Both Egypt and Jordan require some awareness of local customs, particularly in dress (modest clothing in non-resort areas). On a guided group tour you always have company. The Nubian crew on the felucca and the Bedouin hosts at Wadi Rum are known for their hospitality. Many solo women travel this itinerary without incident each year.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your Egyptologist guide carries basic first aid. Cairo, Luxor and Aswan all have private hospitals. In Jordan, Amman has modern medical facilities. Travel insurance is compulsory and must cover emergency medical treatment and repatriation. Carry a paper copy of your policy.
Will I be hassled by vendors and touts?
Around the Pyramids and in the Khan-el-Khalili bazaar in Cairo, and at some Jordan sites, vendor attention is part of the experience. Your guide is experienced at navigating this. A firm, friendly 'no thank you' is usually effective. Dahab, the Sinai resort town on Days 8 to 10, is notably relaxed and low-key.
What is the accommodation actually like?
Accommodation ranges from 3 to 5-star hotels. In Luxor you stay at the 5-star Steigenberger Nile Palace, a modern hotel right on the Nile with pool and multiple restaurants. In Cairo, properties include the Sheraton Cairo Hotel and the Crowne Plaza West Cairo. In Petra and Amman you stay in comfortable hotels in the city centre. The Wadi Rum Bedouin camp provides comfortable tented accommodation under towering cliffs.
What is the Nile felucca like?
Feluccas are traditional wooden sailing boats with no cabins or electricity. You sleep on the deck on mattresses with cushions, blankets and mosquito nets. A canvas roof is erected at night. Our dedicated facilities boat accompanies the felucca and provides hot showers, a hygienic kitchen, and a sun deck with massage facilities. The Nubian crew sail the boat and entertain in the evenings around a campfire. An upgrade to spend this night in an Aswan hotel instead is available for those who prefer more comfort.
What are the sleeper trains like?
You take two overnight sleeper trains: Cairo to Aswan (approximately 12 hours) and Luxor to Cairo (approximately 9 hours). These are private sleeper cabins on Egyptian train services. The experience is basic but functional, and an upgrade to a flight plus hotel night is available for each journey if you prefer.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Hotels throughout the tour have Wi-Fi. On the felucca there is no electricity or connectivity. At the Wadi Rum Bedouin camp connectivity is limited. Dahab's hotels have Wi-Fi.
What kind of food will we eat?
In Egypt: Kushari (Egypt's unofficial national dish of rice, pasta, lentils and tomato sauce), falafel, ful medames, grilled meats, fresh flatbread, and the Nubian crew's meals on the felucca (simple, filling and varied). In Petra the traditional Jordanian Zarb (lamb and chicken cooked underground in Bedouin style) at the Wadi Rum camp is a highlight. In Jordan you will also try Mansaf (the national dish) and freshly baked bread from the Petra Bakery.
Can you cater for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets?

Yes, we are delighted to cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements wherever possible! Simply let us know your dietary preferences or allergies at the time of booking so our team can notify our tour leaders, hotels, and restaurants in advance. While meal options in more remote areas may be simpler, we always do our utmost to ensure you enjoy plentiful, delicious, and authentic local food throughout your adventure with us.

Is it safe to drink the water?
Do not drink tap water in either Egypt or Jordan. Stick to bottled water throughout. The felucca facilities boat has a hygienic kitchen with safe water for food preparation. Bring a Water-to-Go filter bottle to reduce plastic consumption.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The 16-day mix of Egypt and Jordan attracts a lot of solo travellers who want a comprehensive itinerary without the logistics of organising two countries independently. Groups cap at 18, which is small enough to form genuine friendships.
Do I have to share a room?
Pricing is based on twin share. A single supplement is available if you want your own room. Solo travellers happy to share are paired with a same-sex roommate.
What is the group size?
Groups cap at 18 with regular departures every Saturday. The typical group is a mix of nationalities: Australians, New Zealanders, UK, North Americans and Europeans all commonly join.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The tour is available as a private departure on any date. Contact us for a customised quotation.
Do I need a visa for Egypt and Jordan?
For Egypt: visa on arrival is available for most nationalities at Cairo airport. Check current fees on the Egyptian immigration authority website. For Jordan: the Jordan Pass (purchased in advance online) includes your Jordan visa and reduced entry to Petra and other sites and typically works out cheaper than paying separately. Check current Jordan Pass options online. Visa arrangements are your responsibility.
What should I pack?
Modest dress is required at religious sites in both Egypt and Jordan: shoulders and knees covered, women carry a headscarf for mosques. Comfortable walking shoes with grip for ancient stone sites, plus hiking footwear for the Petra hike and Wadi Mujib gorge. Bring a dry bag and water shoes for the Wadi Mujib hike. Sun protection is essential. For the Dahab section (Days 8 to 10), swimwear and light beach clothes.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations for Egypt include Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid. No Yellow Fever certificate is required unless you are arriving from an infected area. Consult your GP or travel clinic for current guidance and for Jordan-specific recommendations.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. Fly into Cairo (CAI) and out of Amman (AMM). We can help arrange flights if you prefer. All airport arrival and departure transfers are included.
What about tipping?
A tipping kitty for Egypt is listed in the exclusions. This covers the range of people you encounter along the way: the felucca crew, hotel porters, restaurant staff and local guides. In Jordan, tips are given separately based on your satisfaction. Your guide will brief you on current amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I add Abu Simbel?
Yes. An optional early morning excursion to the temples built by Ramses II at Abu Simbel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is available on Day 4. It departs very early to catch the rising sun over the temples.
Can I do the hot air balloon over Luxor?
Yes. A spectacular sunrise hot air balloon flight over the West Bank of the Nile is available on Day 6 morning, before the Karnak temple tour.
Can I do Petra by Night?
Yes. On the evening of Day 12, Petra by Night is available as an option. You walk through the Siq to the Treasury, the entire route lit by hundreds of candles.
Can I upgrade the felucca or sleeper train night to a hotel?
Yes. Both the felucca night and each sleeper train night have a hotel upgrade option for those who prefer more comfort. These can be booked in advance.
How far ahead should I book?
Departures are every Saturday throughout the year. Popular months (October to March) tend to fill up. Book 3 to 6 months ahead for your preferred dates.
How does booking work?
Reserve online, pay a deposit or hold a reservation with no immediate payment. Balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. Your policy must cover medical emergencies, repatriation and travel delay. We recommend World Nomads Travel Insurance.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellation charges apply on a sliding scale. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Funds are protected through Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are sold out?
Contact us. We run weekly Saturday departures throughout the year. The tour is also available as a private departure on any date.

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

From the time we landed in Cairo we were treated as VIP’s. Nadine our Tour leader kept on checking on us throughout the journey. We were fortunate to have Fayed and Hossam as the tour guides, they took their time to explain the sites throughout each excursion. Everyone made us feel safe and well looked after.

Encounters travel worked with me to devise a specific itinerary to meet my interests, and its agents and guides in Egypt delivered beautifully while I was in Egypt. I was with a group for most of the trip, but per my request, they set up individual excursions for me on two additional days. Their agents in Cairo and Egypt were particularly good. I had to go to a medical clinic in Luxor unexpectedly, and the Encounters liaison handled it so quickly and easily that it didn't effect my itinerary at all.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

No optional extras are currently listed for this tour.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Accommodation

Egypt:
Most of our small group tours use high quality hotels at the Egyptian 5-star level in Cairo, Aswan, Luxor and Hurghada, all with swimming pools and a choice of restaurants and bars.

However, some of our lower budget trips (eg. Egypt Express) use good quality 3 and 4-star level hotels, all with air-conditioned en-suite bathrooms. On some tours we also use a Nubian guesthouse in Aswan which is full of character and has a great location by the Nile.

Our private/tailor-made tour itineraries use a wider mix of hotels, from comfortable mid-range hotels at the 3-4 star level (generally the best available in some of the less visited places included in the particular itinerary) up to some of the very best deluxe 5-star properties in the country.

Please check the Accommodation tab on the tour page or download these Tour Notes for details of the normal hotels used. On our group tours, these hotels may change from time to time for other properties of a similar standard. If you would like to guarantee a particular hotel, please request a tailor-made tour.

Nile cruise tours are generally based on Egyptian 5-star level boats - perhaps equivalent to a decent international 4-star hotel standard. Please check the Accommodation section on the tour page for details. Deluxe 5-star level boats, all-suite boats, and Dahabiyas are also available on private and tailor-made tours. Please contact us for details.

Accommodation is based on twin, triple or double en-suite rooms/cabins with air conditioning. All couples will be given a private double room/cabin. Triple cabins are not available on Nile cruise boats.

Jordan:
The hotels used on this tour are rated at the Jordanian 3 and 4-star level. Local star ratings may vary from international standards but we ensure we use some of the best hotels available at the level stated. We have also aimed to use hotels in Amman that have a better location than most, with a range of cafes and restaurants within easy walking distance. Accommodation is based on twin or double en-suite rooms with air conditioning. All couples will have a private double room. In Wadi Rum we use a Bedouin camp located inside the Wadi Rum Protected Area. Accommodation is in permanent traditional goat hair tents with proper beds and all bedding provided. Bathrooms are separate, though some en-suite tents are also available and subject to availability you can upgrade to these locally if you wish. You can also bring a sleeping bag if you wish, and find a sheltered spot on the rocks on the edge of the camp and sleep under the stars.

Please check the Single Room Supplement option for details on room sharing options and charges for solo travellers on this tour.
