Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Wet & Wild in Thailand tour?
Wet and Wild in Thailand is our definitive 12-day family adventure, running Bangkok to Bangkok with a maximum of 16 travellers. You'll explore the Grand Palace, cycle through Bangkok's backstreets, board an overnight sleeper train south, sleep in tree houses and raft houses at Khao Sok National Park, spot wildlife in the jungle, and spend the finale on Krabi's Rai Leh Beach with snorkelling and mangrove kayaking. An internal flight from Krabi back to Bangkok is included. Discounts are available for children under 12. This is Thailand done as a genuine family adventure.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Thailand?
Yes. It covers Bangkok's iconic landmarks and introduces families to Thailand's extraordinary natural side: the ancient rainforest of Khao Sok, one of the world's oldest, and the limestone karst scenery of Krabi. The variety means first-time visitors see multiple faces of the country.
What's the difference between this and your other Thailand tours?
Wet and Wild in Thailand (12 days) is family-focused with a small group format and covers more of the country, including Khao Sok and Krabi. The Thai Spice tour (7 days) is a private, culture-focused circuit around Bangkok and Ayutthaya, better suited to adults. Choose Wet and Wild if you want a family adventure with nature and beaches; choose Thai Spice if you want a shorter, private, culture-rich circuit.
What's the best time of year for the Wet and Wild tour?
November to April is the dry season on the Andaman coast (Krabi) and is generally considered the best time. During this period Rai Leh Beach is at its most inviting. The monsoon season (roughly May to October) affects the Andaman coast more than Bangkok and Khao Sok, which can handle rain well given its jungle environment. Check departure dates on the website for currently scheduled groups.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Thailand packages. But Wet and Wild includes an internal flight from Krabi to Bangkok, tree house and raft house accommodation at Khao Sok's Our Jungle Camp Resort, all entrance fees, an overnight sleeper train with berths, 10 breakfasts, 7 lunches, and 3 dinners, and the services of a local guide throughout. As a family-oriented tour with specialist accommodation, the value is in the design, not the cheapest possible bed.
What's actually included in the price?
Included: all accommodation (hotels including Dusit Thani Krabi Resort, Our Jungle Camp Resort Khao Sok, and IBIS Riverside Bangkok), all transport and transfers, internal flight from Krabi to Bangkok, overnight sleeper train, entrance fees for all included sightseeing, services of a local guide, 10 breakfasts, 7 lunches, and 3 dinners.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, visa fees (though many nationalities receive a free exemption), travel insurance, meals not listed in the itinerary, drinks, and personal expenses including optional activities in Krabi. Tipping for guides and drivers is at your discretion. Budget for any extra activities in Krabi or Khao Sok.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Pay a deposit to secure your places and the balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
This is a moderate tour well within reach of active families. The Khao Sok section involves jungle walks on uneven forest trails, canoe paddling through the Sok River, and getting in and out of canoes and boats. Rai Leh Beach requires a short longtail boat ride to reach (no road access). Nothing requires special fitness, but children need to be comfortable with basic outdoor activities.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
The tour is designed for families but welcomes all adults. The jungle activities at Khao Sok involve some uneven terrain and paddling. If you're in reasonable health and enjoy being active outdoors, the tour is very manageable. The beach section at Krabi is relaxed and beautiful.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The tree house and raft house at Khao Sok involve ladders and steps, and the canoe excursions require getting in and out of low-sided boats. Rai Leh Beach is only accessible by longtail boat. These elements make the tour challenging for anyone with significant mobility issues. Contact us before booking if this is a concern.
Is snorkelling at Krabi suitable for non-swimmers?
The snorkelling excursion at Krabi involves being in relatively calm shallow water with snorkel equipment. Non-swimmers or weaker swimmers should inform their guide, who can advise on which activities are appropriate. Life jackets are available.
Is Thailand safe to visit right now?
Thailand is one of Asia's most visited destinations with a mature tourism infrastructure. Bangkok, Khao Sok, and Krabi are all well-established and generally safe tourist areas. Check your government's current travel advice before booking.
Is it safe for women and families travelling solo?
Thailand is very welcoming to families. Solo female travellers, including those travelling with children, visit regularly. Having a local guide throughout the tour adds a layer of security and confidence. The group format also means you're never navigating unfamiliar situations alone.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Bangkok has excellent private hospitals. Khao Sok and Krabi have clinics for minor issues. Your guide will assist with locating care. Travel insurance covering medical expenses and emergency evacuation is compulsory on all our tours.
Are the jungle activities at Khao Sok safe for children?
Khao Sok is a well-established eco-tourism destination with experienced guides. Our Jungle Camp Resort is set up for family groups. Activities like canoe paddling and guided jungle walks are appropriate for children aged 6 and above. The guides will brief safety requirements before each activity.
What's the accommodation actually like?
The tour spans several types of property: the IBIS Riverside Bangkok is a comfortable 3-star city hotel on the Chao Phraya River; Our Jungle Camp Resort at Khao Sok combines tree house and raft house stays on Cheow Lan Lake; and the Dusit Thani Krabi Resort is a high-end beachfront resort. The variety reflects the different environments you're travelling through.
What are the tree house and raft house at Khao Sok like?
The tree houses at Our Jungle Camp Resort are elevated platforms in the forest canopy with private en-suite facilities. The raft houses float on the surface of Cheow Lan Lake, surrounded by dramatic jungle-covered limestone cliffs. Both are unique, genuinely immersive stays that children and adults tend to love. Facilities are rustic but comfortable.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
IBIS Riverside Bangkok and Dusit Thani Krabi Resort have reliable Wi-Fi. The jungle and raft house sections at Khao Sok will have limited or no connectivity. This is part of the experience: genuine immersion in the rainforest.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
The tour is designed around the specific character of each property. On a private version of the tour, we can discuss higher-category options. Contact us to explore this.
What kind of food will we eat?
Thai cuisine features throughout: expect pad thai, fragrant curries, fresh seafood at Krabi, and local Thai dishes at restaurants chosen by your guide. Meals at the jungle camp lean towards hearty Thai cooking. The tour covers 7 lunches and 3 dinners, all at the kind of places your guide knows and trusts.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water in Thailand?
Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled water is widely available. At Khao Sok, carry extra bottled water for jungle excursions. We recommend a Water-to-Go filter bottle to reduce plastic waste throughout the trip.
Is the Wet and Wild tour good for solo travellers?
Yes. Solo adults without children are welcome on any departure alongside families. The small group format (maximum 16) creates a sociable atmosphere.
Do I have to share a room?
The tour price is based on two people sharing. Solo travellers can pay a single supplement for private rooms. Contact us if you'd prefer to share to reduce costs.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Minimum 3, maximum 16 travellers including crew. The group will typically be a mix of families with children, couples, and solo travellers. Child discounts are available for children aged 6 to 12.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The tour can be run as a private departure for your family or group. Contact us for a private tour quotation on your preferred dates.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
This tour is specifically designed with families in mind. Discounted prices are available for children under 12. The tree houses, raft house, canoes, jungle walks, snorkelling, and beach time are all experiences children genuinely love. The minimum recommended age is 6, based on the physical activities involved.
Do I need a visa for Thailand?
Many nationalities, including UK, US, EU, Australian, New Zealand, Canadian, and South African passport holders, currently receive a visa exemption on arrival for up to 30 days. Check current Thai immigration rules before travel as policies can change.
What should I pack?
Lightweight, breathable clothing. Swimwear and quick-dry clothing for Khao Sok and Krabi. Modest cover-ups for Bangkok temples. Insect repellent is essential for the jungle sections. Reef-safe sunscreen for snorkelling. Waterproof sandals or shoes. Rain jacket for Khao Sok. Thailand uses Type A/B sockets at 220V.
Are any vaccinations required for Thailand?
No vaccinations are required for entry. Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid are commonly recommended. A Yellow Fever certificate may be required if arriving from an infected country. Consult your GP or travel clinic before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. International flights are not included. The tour starts in Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi Airport, BKK) and ends in Bangkok after the internal flight from Krabi. Airport transfers on day 1 and on the final day are included.
What about tipping?
Tipping is appreciated in Thailand but entirely voluntary. There is no tipping kitty on this tour. Your guide will brief on local norms and suggested amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I add extra time in Bangkok?
Yes. Pre and post-tour extra nights in Bangkok can be arranged. The city rewards additional exploration, and the extra days can also help with jet lag before the tour begins.
Can I add more days in Krabi or the islands?
Contact us about beach extensions after the tour ends. Krabi and the nearby islands offer excellent snorkelling, rock climbing, and relaxation opportunities that make for a natural extension.
How far ahead should I book?
The tour has a minimum group size of 3, so booking well in advance is advisable to ensure the departure runs. Peak school holiday departures (particularly July to August and December to January) fill quickly. Aim for at least 3 to 4 months ahead.
How does booking work?
Book online via the Dates and Prices section. Pay a deposit to secure your places or hold a reservation. Balance due 8 weeks before departure. Confirmation email follows with full details.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, compulsory. Your policy must cover medical expenses and emergency evacuation. World Nomads covers adventure activities including jungle walks and water sports. We must have your insurance details before the tour starts.
What's your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale applies based on how close to departure you cancel. Full terms are in our booking conditions. We partner with Trust My Travel for financial protection.
What if my preferred dates are sold out?
Contact us about the waitlist or a private departure on alternative dates. The Thai Spice tour (7 days) is available as an alternative for a shorter Thailand trip.

This was the second tour I booked with Encounter travel. The first one was in Egypt and we had such a fantastic experience that my family and I went directly to them again for Southeast Asia. Our agent was Anthony... he was organized, attentive and very patient with us for all our questions, concerns and requests. He always responded in an excellent timely manner. Our 3 guides in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand were AMAZING!! Phong, Santhou, and Pramote made the experience so wonderful. All 3 were very knowledgeable about their own countries and cultures, we learned so much from them, they were attentive and very friendly. Both the guides and drivers gave great service and greeted us with with bottled water and wipes every day. By the time we left each country, they weren't just our guides, they were friends. My family and I loved this experience so much and have nothing but great things to say about Encounter Travel!!

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Money

The currency in Thailand is the Thai Baht (THB). You do not need to arrange to bring any Thai Baht with you to Thailand, as change facilities are readily available in the airport, hotels and banks. We recommend that you consider bringing both credit cards and some cash in a hard currency (e.g. GB Pounds, Euros, US Dollars).

ATMs are readily available in the arrivals hall of Bangkok airport and in most major towns. Many local shops in larger towns and resorts will accept VISA/Mastercard or Amex, but may charge fees of up to 10% - check before you pay. Travellers cheques are not recommended as they can not be changed in many places now, and can incur high fees.

For security we recommend that you use the safety deposit box in your hotel room or at the hotel reception if available. You should also be careful of pickpockets in crowded places, especially places like Khao San Road in Bangkok.

While in Thailand you will need sufficient funds to cover meals not included in the itinerary, drinks, snacks, souvenirs and personal expenses such as laundry. Check the Included/Excluded notes below the tour itinerary for more guidance. These should generally all be paid for in Thai Baht.

It is difficult to recommend a level of personal spending money which will suit everyone as this can differ greatly, but as a guideline, we would suggest allowing USD 15-25 per person per day as a minimum. Allow more if you plan on doing lots of shopping, or buying many alcoholic drinks.
