Why book the Best of the Galapagos tour?
Best of the Galapagos is a 7-day small-group tour running Quito to Quito that combines one night in Ecuador's Andean capital with 5 days exploring two Galapagos Islands in depth. On Isabela Island you snorkel through a lava tube, hike to the Sierra Negra Volcano caldera, and see marine iguanas, sea lions, penguins, and giant tortoises in the wild. On Santa Cruz you visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, see giant tortoises roaming free at the Primicias Ranch, and explore the Darwin finches' habitat. Groups are capped at 12 with a minimum of 2.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to the Galapagos?
It is designed for first-timers. The 5 days in the islands cover the two most iconic experiences - the volcanic landscape of Isabela and the Darwin research heritage of Santa Cruz. You emerge with a thorough introduction to both the wildlife and the ecology that makes the Galapagos one of the world's great wildlife destinations.
What is the difference between this and your other Galapagos tours?
Best of the Galapagos (7 days) focuses on Isabela and Santa Cruz, giving each island substantial time. The Galapagos Essentials tour is a shorter option. The Galapagos Uncovered tour is longer and covers additional islands. Best of the Galapagos is the right balance for most travellers with a week available.
What is the best time of year for the Galapagos?
The Galapagos is a year-round destination with different wildlife highlights in different seasons. June to December brings cooler Humboldt Current waters, rough seas, and the best snorkelling visibility. January to May sees calmer warmer seas and sea turtle nesting. There is no bad time, only different experiences.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it - the Galapagos is not a budget destination. But this is not just a flight and a hotel package. Best of the Galapagos includes 1 night in a 5-star Quito hotel, accommodation on both islands, an expert English-speaking naturalist guide throughout the islands, all island transfers, guided tours of all sites, and entrance fees. The INGALA transit card and the Galapagos National Park entrance fee are excluded and paid locally.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 1 night in a 5-star Quito hotel, accommodation on Isabela Island and Santa Cruz Island (3-star level), all island boat transfers, an expert naturalist guide throughout, guided tours of all included sites, and meals as indicated in the itinerary.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, Ecuador visa fees if applicable, travel insurance, the INGALA Galapagos transit card, the Galapagos National Park entrance fee, some meals, drinks and personal expenses, and tips. The INGALA card and National Park fee are two separate local payments - check current amounts on the official Ecuador national park website.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve with a deposit and pay the balance 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is Best of the Galapagos?
Moderate. The Sierra Negra Volcano hike on Isabela is a half-day walk and the most physically demanding element. Snorkelling in the lava tube requires basic swimming ability. Most of the other activities involve walking on volcanic paths at a comfortable pace.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
Best of the Galapagos is suitable for most ages. The Sierra Negra hike can be adjusted in pace. The snorkelling and wildlife encounters are accessible for fit older travellers. The Galapagos is not a strenuous adventure destination.
Is the snorkelling suitable for weak swimmers?
Basic swimming ability is required for the lava tube snorkelling on Isabela. Non-swimmers or nervous swimmers should inform us when booking. Life vests are available for water activities.
What if I have mobility issues?
The Galapagos involves uneven volcanic terrain and rocky shoreline walks. Contact us before booking to discuss specific accessibility concerns.
Is Ecuador safe to visit right now?
Ecuador's security situation has been evolving and we strongly recommend checking your government's current travel advice before booking. The Galapagos Islands themselves are an autonomous province with a very different security environment from mainland Ecuador.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
The Galapagos Islands are a safe and calm environment. The small group and expert guide provide excellent support.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
The Galapagos has limited medical facilities compared to the mainland. Quito has good private hospitals. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation from the islands to the mainland is essential.
Are the boat transfers between islands safe?
Yes. Speed boats are the standard inter-island transport in the Galapagos. The crossing between Santa Cruz and Isabela can be choppy. Motion sickness tablets are worth bringing if you are susceptible.
What is the accommodation actually like?
You stay in a 5-star hotel in Quito for 1 night. In the Galapagos, the accommodation on both Isabela and Santa Cruz is at approximately the 3-star level - comfortable local hotels rather than luxury lodges, but adequate for the focus of the trip which is the wildlife and nature.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
The Quito hotel has reliable Wi-Fi. On the Galapagos Islands, internet connectivity is limited - the islands have restricted infrastructure and you should plan to be largely offline during your island days.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
The 5-star Quito hotel is already at the top level. Contact us about upgrade options for the island accommodation.
What kind of food will we eat?
Galapagos food focuses on fresh seafood - lobster, tuna, and mahi-mahi are the local specialities. In Quito, Ecuadorian cuisine includes locro (potato soup), ceviche, and empanadas. The island restaurants are small and local in character.
Can you cater for vegetarian or vegan diets?
Vegetarian options are available on the islands, though the menus are seafood-heavy. Inform us when booking so we can flag requirements with island accommodation.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water in Ecuador and the Galapagos. A Water-to-Go filter bottle is a sustainable option.
Is Best of the Galapagos good for solo travellers?
Yes. The small group cap of 12 creates an intimate and social environment. Wildlife-focused travel draws curious, engaged travellers who connect easily.
Do I have to share a room?
A single supplement is available for private rooms. Without it, solo travellers may be matched with a same-sex room partner.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups run with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12 passengers. Wildlife and nature enthusiasts of all ages join - it is not an adventure extreme tour and attracts a wide demographic.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures on dates of your choice are available. Contact us for pricing.
Is Best of the Galapagos suitable for kids?
There is no minimum age listed. The wildlife encounters are extraordinary for children - tame giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and sea lions are unforgettable for young visitors. The Sierra Negra hike may be challenging for younger children. Contact us for family-specific advice.
Do I need a visa for Ecuador?
UK, US, EU, Canadian, Australian, and many other passport holders do not require a visa for short tourist stays in Ecuador. Check current requirements for your specific passport.
What should I pack?
Lightweight clothing suitable for tropical conditions. Layers for Quito (which sits at 2,850m and can be cool). Reef-safe sunscreen is required in the Galapagos to protect the marine ecosystem. A reusable water bottle, binoculars for wildlife, and a dry bag for boat transfers.
Are any vaccinations recommended for Ecuador?
No vaccinations are legally required for entry to Ecuador. Recommended precautions typically include Hepatitis A and Typhoid. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for travel to the Amazon region though is generally not relevant for this Galapagos itinerary. Consult your GP or travel clinic.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. You book your own flights to Quito (UIO) and then onward to the Galapagos. The internal Quito-to-Galapagos flight is included in the tour.
What about tipping?
Your guide will advise on appropriate tipping norms at the start of the tour. Tips for naturalist guides are an important part of their income.
Can I add the Galapagos Uncovered tour?
The Galapagos Uncovered tour covers additional islands beyond Isabela and Santa Cruz. Contact us about combining or extending.
Can I add extra nights in Quito?
Yes. Quito is a fascinating city in its own right - a UNESCO World Heritage old town with colonial architecture. Extra nights before or after the tour are easy to arrange.
Can I combine with the Amazon or Machu Picchu?
Ecuador and Peru are natural neighbours. Contact us about extending to the Amazon or combining with a Peru trip including Machu Picchu.
How far ahead should I book?
Galapagos tours book up well in advance due to limited accommodation and national park visitor controls. Book at least 4-6 months ahead for preferred dates.
How does booking work?
Reserve online via the Dates and Prices tab. Pay a deposit or use reserve-now-pay-later. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Travel insurance is compulsory. Your policy must cover medical emergencies and evacuation from the Galapagos Islands. World Nomads is our recommended partner.
What is your cancellation policy?
Our terms use a sliding scale. Full details in our booking conditions. UK-registered and financially protected through Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are sold out?
Contact us about the waitlist or available alternative dates. The Galapagos Essentials or Galapagos Uncovered tours may also be available when this tour is full.
