Why book the Tuscany and Umbria Tour?
Tuscany and Umbria is a 10-day self-drive tour through central Italy, starting and ending in Florence. A rental car is included throughout, and the itinerary takes you from Lucca and the Cinque Terre coast through Chianti wine country, Cortona, and across into Umbria for Assisi, a Michelin-star cooking class at Il Falconiere with chef Silvia Baracchi, and white-water rafting on the River Nera. It's everything Italy does best, at your own pace.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Italy?
Very much so. Tuscany and Umbria are two of Italy's most rewarding and accessible regions, and the self-drive format makes it ideal for travellers who want structure but also freedom. The itinerary guides you to the right places in the right order without locking you into a group schedule. A confidence with driving (including on narrow country roads) is helpful.
What's the difference between this and a standard group tour of Italy?
This is a self-drive tour with a rental car included, not a group tour with a shared coach and guide. You travel at your own pace with a pre-planned route and stay in 4-star hotels and characterful country properties. There's no fixed departure time each morning and no tour group. If you prefer independence and want to stop where you choose, this format suits you better than a group itinerary.
What's the best time of year to do this tour?
Late spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are ideal: warm temperatures, long days, the harvest in Chianti, and olive picking in October. July and August are popular but hotter and more crowded at major sites. Winter (November to March) is quieter with shorter days and a different, atmospheric quality to the landscape.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can rent a car and book hotels yourself. What you're paying for here is 10 nights in 4-star hotels and characterful country properties including Hotel Ilaria in Lucca, Palazzo San Nocolo or Ultimo Mulino in Chianti, Hotel Cortona Resort and Spa, and Relais la Corte Bettona in Torgiano; a rental car for the full 10 days; all breakfasts; a Michelin-star cooking class and lunch at Il Falconiere with chef Silvia Baracchi; a wine tasting at Fattoria del Colle; Cinque Terre train cards; olive oil tasting at Frantoio Gaudenzi; and a Castello di Brolio visit. Pre-planning and pre-booking all of this independently takes considerable time.
What's actually included in the price?
Included: 10 nights in 4-star hotels (Hotel Ilaria Lucca, Palazzo San Nocolo or Ultimo Mulino Radda in Chianti, Hotel Cortona Resort and Spa, Relais la Corte Bettona Torgiano); rental car throughout; 10 breakfasts; Cinque Terre train card; Castello di Brolio visit and wine tasting; Michelin-star cooking class and lunch at Il Falconiere with chef Silvia Baracchi; Fattoria del Colle lunch and wine tasting; River Nera white-water rafting; Frantoio Gaudenzi olive oil tasting.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, travel insurance, most lunches and dinners, fuel and toll costs for the rental car, site entrance fees, drinks, and personal expenses. Exclusion details for this tour were listed as TBC in the source; contact us for the current full exclusions list before booking.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve with a deposit or hold a reservation. The full balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Easy to moderate. This is a driving holiday with walking at historic sites and villages, most of it on flat or gently undulating terrain. The Cinque Terre coastal villages involve some steps and hills. The white-water rafting on River Nera is a fun activity suitable for most adults. You need to be comfortable driving, including on narrow Italian country lanes and in hill towns with limited parking.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
This is a self-paced self-drive tour, so the pace is entirely yours. There are no other group members to keep up with. The tour is well-suited to older travellers who want to explore Italy's hill towns and countryside comfortably.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The self-drive format means you control your own pace entirely. Some of the historic centres, particularly the hilltop towns of San Gimignano, Volterra, and Cortona, have cobblestone streets and steep gradients that can be challenging for those with mobility limitations. Contact us to discuss which parts of the itinerary work for your situation.
Do I need to be a confident driver?
Yes. The Italian countryside includes winding mountain roads, historic town centres with ZTL restricted zones, and Italian driving culture, which requires confidence and alertness. If you haven't driven in Europe before, research the main differences (left-hand traffic, ZTL zones, motorway tolls, priority rules on narrow lanes) before arrival.
Is Italy safe to visit right now?
Italy is one of the world's most visited travel destinations and is safe for tourists. Normal awareness in city centres applies, particularly for pickpockets in tourist areas like Florence. Check the UK Foreign Office or your government's official travel advice before departure.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Italy is a safe destination for solo female travellers. The self-drive format, 4-star hotels, and well-established tourist routes make this particularly accessible.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Italy has good public healthcare and private hospitals. Travel insurance with medical cover is compulsory on all our tours. As a self-drive tour, you manage your own day-to-day arrangements; our team is available by phone or email if you need support.
What if my rental car breaks down?
Your rental car comes with standard roadside assistance cover. Contact the rental company's helpline in the event of a breakdown. Keep the rental agreement with you throughout the trip.
What's the accommodation actually like?
All 4-star hotels with character. In Lucca, Hotel Ilaria is a boutique property in the heart of the walled town. In Chianti, Palazzo San Nocolo or Ultimo Mulino offer wine-country atmosphere in converted historic buildings. Hotel Cortona Resort and Spa gives you pool views over the Cortona hillside. In Torgiano, Relais la Corte Bettona is a classic Umbrian country estate. These are not chain hotels.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
All hotels on this tour have Wi-Fi.
Can I upgrade?
If you want a higher level of accommodation at any stop, contact us before booking to discuss what can be arranged. Some of the properties used are already among the finest in their areas.
What kind of food will we eat?
Exceptional. Tuscan cuisine centres on bistecca fiorentina, ribollita (hearty bread and vegetable soup), fresh pasta, cured meats, and Chianti wine. Umbrian specialities include truffle-based dishes, lentils from Castelluccio, and Sagrantino di Montefalco wine. The Michelin-star cooking class at Il Falconiere gives you a hands-on immersion in regional technique. The Fattoria del Colle lunch pairs Chianti food with estate wine.
Can you cater for vegetarian or vegan diets?
Yes, we are delighted to cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements wherever possible! Simply let us know your dietary preferences or allergies at the time of booking so our team can notify our tour leaders, hotels, and restaurants in advance. While meal options in more remote areas may be simpler, we always do our utmost to ensure you enjoy plentiful, delicious, and authentic local food throughout your adventure with us.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water in Italy is generally safe to drink and of good quality. Many Italians drink bottled water by preference. Acqua del rubinetto (tap water) is safe in all the areas covered by this tour.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes, particularly for those who enjoy the freedom to set their own daily pace. Solo drivers will want to be comfortable navigating independently. The 4-star properties and included activities provide built-in experiences to anchor each day.
Do I have to share a room?
The tour is priced on a twin-share basis. A single supplement is available for solo travellers.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
This is a private self-drive tour: there are no other group members. It runs exclusively for you and your travel companions. The cooking class at Il Falconiere may include other guests from the resort.
Can I book this as a private tour?
The Tuscany and Umbria Tour is already private by design. Contact us to customise dates, hotels, or specific activities.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The tour involves extended driving, wine tastings, and cooking classes that are adult-oriented. Older teenagers may enjoy the itinerary. Contact us to discuss suitability for specific ages and whether adjustments can be made for families.
Do I need a visa for Italy?
EU/Schengen passport holders need no visa. Non-EU nationals including UK, US, Australian, and Canadian passport holders can enter Italy for short stays without a visa, though EU Entry/Exit System (EES) electronic border checks apply. Check the latest Schengen rules for your nationality before travel.
What should I pack?
Smart-casual clothing for restaurants and wineries (Italians dress well for dinner). Comfortable walking shoes for cobblestone hill towns. A layer for cool evenings and air-conditioned interiors in summer. Italy uses Type C/F sockets at 230V. A sun hat and sunscreen for outdoor sites. International driving licence if required by your car hire agreement.
Are any vaccinations required?
No vaccinations are required for Italy. Normal Western European health standards apply.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. Fly to Florence (FLR) or Pisa (PSA); both are a short drive from the tour start. We are happy to suggest flight options.
How much luggage can I bring?
The rental car provides good luggage space. Most airlines allow 20-23kg checked luggage. Italian hill town hotels with narrow alleys sometimes make heavy luggage awkward. Pack a soft bag or wheeled bag rather than a rigid case with wheels for easier loading and hotel access.
Can I add extra nights in Florence?
Yes. Florence is one of Italy's greatest cities and additional nights can easily be arranged before or after the tour. Contact us to add Florence hotel nights.
Can I visit more Chianti wineries?
The tour includes a visit to Castello di Brolio and the Fattoria del Colle. Additional winery visits in the Chianti Classico zone can be arranged. Contact us to discuss adding these as optional extras.
Can I extend into Rome?
Yes. Rome is accessible from Torgiano in the south of the Umbria section. Extra nights in Rome can be added to the end of the tour. Contact us to arrange.
How far ahead should I book?
The included cooking class at Il Falconiere has limited spaces and is best reserved as early as possible. Spring and autumn dates are most popular. Booking 3-6 months in advance is recommended.
How does booking work?
Complete the online reservation form on the Tuscany and Umbria tour page. Pay a deposit, hold a reservation, or pay in full. Balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Travel insurance is compulsory on all our tours. Cover must include medical expenses, emergency repatriation, and ideally car hire excess insurance. World Nomads is widely used.
What's your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale applies depending on how far ahead you cancel. Full terms are in our booking conditions. We are UK-registered and protected by Trust My Travel's financial security insurance.
What if my dates are already sold out?
Contact us to check availability on alternative dates. The tour can also run at different times of year to your preferred dates, subject to hotel availability.
