Arrive in Moshi

Day 1 Meals TBC
Reach Moshi and settle in for the overnight stay. The arrival period is deliberately simple, allowing time to rest, organise your belongings and prepare for the next stage of the trip. The town’s location beneath Kilimanjaro provides the setting for the night and marks the transition from your earlier travel into the mountain experiences ahead.

Activities

  • Moshi Enjoy some time to relax at your Moshi hotel after arrival and settle in before the trek begins. You can rest, explore the town or prepare your gear for the days ahead.
DAY 2

Machame (About 5 hours walking)

Day 2 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner
Breakfast followed by briefing and preparation of equipment. Then drive from Moshi to the Mt Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame, which is located on the lower slopes of the Mountain. Once we reach the park gate, climbers are requested to make their final preparations for the climb. Porters will be seen arranging their packs containing food, water, firewood and other equipment. Make sure that you have all your day pack items with you as the porters travel very quickly. The guides will be pleased to assist with any additional information. We now leave the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail to the first uniport hut which is located at an altitude of ( 3048 m) we continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Hut. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy our dinner and overnight. We have now reached an altitude of (3100 m).

Activities

  • Moshi – Pre-Departure Briefing Meet your local representative in Moshi for a detailed briefing on the Kilimanjaro trek. Your guide will review the route, safety information and what to expect over the coming days.
  • Drive Moshi → Machame Gate Around fifty minutes of driving from Moshi brings you to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate at Machame, passing through the village of the same name on the lower slopes. Final preparations are completed and the porters' loads are sorted before you set off.
  • Hike Machame Gate → Machame Camp A winding trail from the park gate leads through the rain forest, passing the first uniport hut at 3,048 metres. A short further climb brings you to Machame Camp at 3,100 metres for your first night on the mountain.
DAY 3

Shira (About 4 hours walking)

Day 3 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner
After breakfast, we leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the little valley walking along a steep rocky ridge, covered with heather, until the ridge ends. The route now turns west onto a river gorge at (3658 m) time for rest, dinner and overnight at The Shira Hut Camp Site.

Activities

  • Hike Machame Camp → Shira Camp Leaving the glades of the rain forest, the trail climbs a steep rocky ridge covered in heather until the ridge ends. The route then turns west into a river gorge and on to the Shira Hut campsite at 3,658 metres.
DAY 4

Barranco (About 6 hours walking)

Day 4 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner
Walk for around six hours from the Shira Plateau towards Lava Tower and the Arrow Glacier junction before descending to Barranco Hut at about 3,860 metres. The route reaches approximately 4,876 metres before losing altitude, supporting acclimatisation. Dinner and overnight are at Barranco. A separate optional extra day may be added for further acclimatisation with local hiking and a night at Karanga Camp.

Activities

  • Hike Shira Plateau → Lava Tower The route heads east past the junction below Kibo's peak, then turns south-east towards the Lava Tower, known as the Shark's Tooth. Beyond the tower a second junction leads up to the Arrow Glacier at 4,876 metres, the high point of the day.
  • Hike Lava Tower → Barranco Hut The descent from the high ground by the Arrow Glacier leads to Barranco Hut at 3,860 metres. Finishing at much the same height you started is what makes this such an effective acclimatisation day.
DAY 5

Barafu (about 8 hours walking)

Day 5 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner
Trek from Barranco to Barafu over approximately eight hours, passing the Barranco Wall, Karanga Valley and the junction with the Mweka Trail. Continue upwards to Barafu Hut at about 4,600 metres and settle into camp for the night. Dinner and rest follow the long walking day, while views towards Mawenzi and Kibo depend on weather and visibility.

Activities

  • Climb the Barranco Wall The steep rock band of the Barranco Wall rises directly above camp and must be tackled before the day is done. The way up is a scramble to the top of the Great Barranco.
  • Hike Barranco Hut → Barafu Camp The steep ridge above Barranco is followed past the Barranco Wall, the Karanga Valley is crossed and the Mweka Trail junction is passed before Barafu Camp at 4,600 metres is reached. Mawenzi and Kibo are both in sight at the end of a long day.
  • Rest and Summit Preparation – Barafu Camp Camp is set at Barafu, an early meal is taken, and the afternoon is spent resting before the summit attempt. Gear is sorted and sleep is seized, as the climb begins well before dawn.
DAY 6

Uhuru Peak

Day 6 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner
(About 11 hours walking) Early morning we continue our ascent to Stella point (5745 m) on our way to the summit (Uhuru Peak) (5895 m). (This part of the climb takes about 6 hours). We have now reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa. From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut Camp site (3100 m) (This part of the descent takes about 5 hours). Later in the evening we enjoy our last dinner on the Mountain and a well-earned sleep.

Activities

  • Hike Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak A pre-dawn departure from Barafu begins the scree climb to the crater rim, then the route follows it to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, Africa's highest point. Around six hours to the top, and extreme cold is the norm.
  • Descend Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp From the summit you drop down to Mweka Camp at 3,100 metres, roughly five hours below. Gaiters and trekking poles are worth having for the loose gravel on the way down.
DAY 7

Arrive in Moshi

Day 7 Breakfast
Walk for around four hours towards Mweka Park Gate and complete the final descent from Kilimanjaro. As elevation decreases, the mountain landscape gradually becomes greener before the trail reaches the park exit. From Mweka Gate, travel by vehicle back to Moshi and return to the hotel after completing the trekking portion of the trip.

Activities

  • Hike Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate The descent from Mweka Camp drops through the last of the forest to Mweka Park Gate. The lower slopes can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and poles are useful, and the temperature rises noticeably with each hour.
  • Drive Mweka Gate → Moshi A waiting vehicle at Mweka takes you the short distance back to your hotel in Moshi. A hot shower and a proper bed signal the end of your time on the mountain.
DAY 8

Depart Moshi

Day 8 Breakfast
The tour concludes after breakfast in Moshi. Use the final morning to prepare for your onward journey before leaving according to your own arrangements. The included breakfast marks the last organised element of the trip, after which further travel continues independently and your time with the group comes to an end.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Machame Route and why is it popular?
The Machame Route is known as the 'whiskey' route on Kilimanjaro. It is the second most popular route on the mountain and is highly regarded for its scenic variety. Unlike the shorter Marangu route, Machame takes you around approximately 40 km of terrain, circling halfway around the mountain and offering spectacular views from multiple angles.
How long does this trek take?
The trek is 8 days in total, with 6 days on the mountain and 2 days in Moshi (arrival and departure). The climb itself follows the Machame route over 6 days, giving more time for acclimatisation than shorter routes.
What is the summit altitude and route?
The summit is Uhuru Peak at 5895m, the highest point in Africa. From Barafu camp at 4600m, you begin the ascent in the early hours and reach Stella Point at 5745m before continuing to the summit. After reaching the top, you descend to Mweka Camp and then back to Moshi.
Where does the trek start and finish?
The trek starts and ends in Moshi, Tanzania. You arrive in Moshi on Day 1 and overnight at the Springlands hotel. After the descent, you return to the Springlands hotel on Day 7 before departure the following morning.
What type of accommodation is used on the mountain?
All trekkers on the Machame Route sleep in tents throughout the climb. Tents are included in the tour price. Meals are served in a dinner tent or outside, depending on conditions.
What is the group size for this trek?
This is a private tour with a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 12 people. You can book as a solo traveller and the tour will be run for you. Larger groups are also accommodated up to the 12-person cap.
Is there an optional extra day on the mountain?
Yes. On Day 4, at Barranco camp, there is the option to add an extra day on the mountain for additional acclimatisation. This extra day includes a local hike and overnight at Karanga camp, and can increase your chances of reaching the summit.
What is included in the tour price?
Included are all accommodation and meals as detailed in the itinerary (including taxes and service charges), transfers by minibus or car, a cook, a guide and porters for the entire climb, three meals a day on the mountain, tea and coffee, national park entry fees, hut and camp fees, rescue fees, and Flying Doctor insurance cover.
What is not included in the price?
Not included are your international flights, visas, personal travel insurance, optional excursions and activities, drinks (soft drinks, mineral water and alcoholic beverages), tips, laundry and other personal expenses, and equipment hire.
Is Flying Doctor cover included?
Yes. Flying Doctor insurance cover is included in the tour price. This provides emergency medical evacuation cover while you are on the mountain, which is an important safeguard given the remote conditions at altitude.
Are park entrance fees included?
Yes. All national park entry fees and camp fees are included in the tour price.
Is tipping included?
Tips for the guide, cook, and porters are not included. Tipping is an important part of the team's income. Your guide will be able to advise on appropriate amounts for the Kilimanjaro team.
How fit do I need to be for the Machame Route?
The Machame Route is described as suitable for physically fit people with some hiking experience. It is a challenging multi-day climb to nearly 5900m and requires good cardiovascular fitness and the ability to walk for several hours each day on steep and varied terrain. You do not need technical mountaineering skills, but you should have solid general fitness.
What altitude will I be trekking at?
The route reaches a maximum altitude of 5895m at Uhuru Peak. You will also pass through Stella Point at 5745m. Camp altitudes range from 3100m at Machame Hut on Day 2 up to 4600m at Barafu before the summit push.
What is the summit day like?
Summit day starts very early in the morning, typically around midnight. The ascent to the summit takes approximately 6 hours, and the descent back to Mweka camp takes around 5 hours. It is about 11 hours of walking in total and is the hardest day of the trek.
Can I do this trek if I have never climbed at altitude before?
Many trekkers on Kilimanjaro are doing their first high-altitude climb. The 6-day Machame itinerary is designed to allow gradual acclimatisation, and the route's profile (climb high, sleep lower on Day 4) helps the body adjust. That said, altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of fitness. Consult your doctor before booking if you have concerns.
What happens if I cannot reach the summit?
Not everyone who attempts Kilimanjaro reaches the summit. If you develop severe altitude sickness or are unable to continue, your guide will turn you around and assist your descent to a safe altitude. Your health and safety always take priority over reaching the top.
Is travel insurance required?
Yes. Personal travel insurance is mandatory for this trek. The tour includes Flying Doctor cover, but your own policy must also cover you for high-altitude trekking, medical emergencies, and repatriation. Check the fine print of any policy to confirm altitude coverage.
Are porters treated ethically on this tour?
All porters are employed and equipped following guidelines set by the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG). This covers their welfare, working conditions, and equipment standards.
What vaccinations are recommended for Tanzania?
Recommended additional vaccinations for Tanzania include Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid. A Yellow Fever certificate is required if you are arriving from or have transited through an infected area. Malaria prophylactics are also strongly advised. Consult your GP or a travel clinic for current, personalised advice before departure.
Where do I stay at the start and end of the trek?
You stay at the Springlands Hotel in Moshi on both the arrival night (Day 1) and the night after returning from the mountain (Day 7). Springlands is a well-known trekker base hotel.
What is the tent accommodation like on the mountain?
All tents are provided and transported by porters. You sleep in your own tent at each campsite. Meals are served in a communal dinner tent. Facilities at the campsites are basic, with basic toilet facilities and no running water. Wet wipes and hand sanitiser are your best friends on the mountain.
Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?
Trekking equipment including a sleeping bag is not listed as included, so you will need to arrange your own or hire it locally. Kilimanjaro nights can be very cold, particularly at the higher camps, so a sleeping bag rated to minus 10 degrees Celsius or lower is recommended. Check the equipment notes when you book.
Are meals provided on the mountain?
Yes. Three meals a day are provided and prepared by your cook throughout the climb. Tea and coffee are also included. Soft drinks, mineral water and alcoholic drinks are not included and must be purchased locally if you want them.
Can vegetarians or those with dietary requirements be catered for?
Yes. If you have specific dietary requirements, let us know at the time of booking. Your cook will be briefed. The mountain diet is typically carbohydrate-rich to sustain energy at altitude.
Is water safe to drink on the mountain?
Stream and river water should not be drunk untreated. Your team will provide boiled water for drinking, or you can bring purification tablets or a filter. Staying well hydrated is one of the key factors in acclimatisation and summit success.
Can I book this trek as a solo traveller?
Yes. This is a private tour with a minimum of 1 person, so solo bookings are fully accommodated. You will have your own guide and porter team for the climb.
Who typically does this trek?
Trekkers on the Machame Route tend to be people with some hiking experience who want a challenging but achievable African adventure. The route attracts a mix of ages and nationalities. Groups tend to be small, making for a more personal experience with the mountain crew.
What visa do I need for Tanzania?
Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival or apply in advance online. Requirements and fees vary by passport. Check with the Tanzanian embassy or consulate well in advance of your trip. Visa costs are not included in the tour price.
What currency is used in Tanzania?
The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). US Dollars are widely accepted and are the preferred hard currency for exchange. Euros and Sterling are also accepted at most exchange points. Credit cards are available in larger cities but not widely used outside them. Bring sufficient cash for your trip.
What should I pack for the Machame Route?
Key items include sturdy waterproof hiking boots, warm and waterproof layered clothing, sun protection, a headlamp with spare batteries, trekking poles, and personal toiletries. Kilimanjaro experiences a wide range of temperatures, from warm in the lower rainforest to well below freezing near the summit. Packing layers is essential.
What electrical sockets are used in Tanzania?
Sockets are three rectangular-pronged at 220 volts, the same as British BS-1363 sockets. All hotel rooms have electrical sockets for recharging devices. If you have US appliances running at 110 volts, you will need a voltage converter as well as a plug adapter.
Is there an option to add extra acclimatisation time?
Yes. On Day 4, an optional extra day at Karanga camp can be added for additional acclimatisation. This extra night on the mountain includes a day hike and is strongly recommended if you have any concerns about your acclimatisation.
Can I extend my time in Tanzania after the trek?
Yes. Encounters Travel can help you add a Tanzania safari, a Zanzibar beach extension, or other activities to your trip. Contact us to discuss options and pricing for any extensions around your trek.

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

Encounters Travel, you did it again! We had an amazing and very memorable trip to Bhutan. It was very well organized. The tour company did a wonderful job. Our journey through Bhutan was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, the country's serene landscapes and deep-rooted culture wrapped us in a sense of peace and wonder. The hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) was a breathtaking hike and an even more spiritual reward at the top. The view was surreal, and the monastery seemed to float on the cliffside. The trip leaves you with a calmer heart, a clearer mind, and memories that feel timeless!

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. International Flights

We want to give you as much flexibility as possible when it comes to booking your holiday with us. So, to take account of people with varying travel plans, we don’t include your international flights in the main tour price. We are however very happy to suggest flights to go with the tour. Please contact us with your preferred dates and departure airport and we’ll give you a selection of airlines, times and fares to choose from.

On our Tanzania Small Group Tours, airport transfers are not included in the price of the tour, but are available on a request basis.

We do also sometimes advertise flight inclusive packages from selected airports. Where these are shown on our website, prices are correct at the time of quoting, but are subject to continued availability of the fare used. Prices will be reconfirmed at the time of booking, and we will also provide the flight times and airline details before tickets are issued.
Flight inclusive prices are based on the cheapest Economy ticket class available which is generally non-refundable and non-changeable unless the flight is cancelled for reasons such as Covid-19, in which case the airlines are more flexible. More flexible ticket options, as well as Premium Economy and Business Class tickets are available on request for an additional supplement. Any changes made to flight inclusive bookings will be subject to the airline rules on your ticket.

Flight CO2 Emissions:

Traveling by air is an amazing way to explore the world, but flights also contribute to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that impact the environment. By considering the airline's CO2 emissions when you choose your flight, you can help minimize your travel footprint.

When selecting your international flights and airline, we do therefore recommend that you try and also take into account the flight CO2 emissions. Some airlines and flight search websites (eg. Google Flights, Skyscanner) do publish this information, so you can compare between your flight options and make an informed decision. Thankfully, many airlines are working towards sustainability efforts, and choosing a greener option allows you to contribute to positive change while still enjoying your incredible adventure.
