Botswana, officially the Republic of Botswana, is a landlocked country situated in southern Africa. This country was formerly known as the British protectorate of Bechuanaland. In 1966, Botswana adopted its new name after becoming independent within the Commonwealth. As a result, the country has maintained a strong tradition of stable representative democracy.
This mid-sized country is topographically flat, with up to 70% of its territory being the Kalahari Desert. Botswana is bordered by South Africa to the south and southeast, Namibia to the west and north, and Zimbabwe to the northeast. Botswana is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world.
The capital and largest city in Botswana is Gaborone. About 10% of the population resides in Gaborone. Botswana used to be one of the poorest countries in the world, but it has now transformed into one of the world's fastest-growing economies. Cattle, mining and tourism largely influence Botswana's economy.
There are diverse areas of habitat in Botswana, including delta, desert, grassland and savanna areas. In the north of Botswana, there are one of the few remaining large populations of endangered African wild dogs. The Chobe National Park, in the Chobe District, has the world's largest concentration of African elephants.
The Tswana are the majority ethnic group in Botswana, making up 79% of the population. The largest minority ethnic groups are the BaKalanga, and San or AbaThwa, also known as Basarwa. Around 10,000 San people are still living their traditional hunter-gatherer way of life.
