What countries does this family overland trip cover?
The tour travels through three countries: Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia. You start in Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe side of the border, cross into Botswana for Chobe National Park, then spend the majority of the trip exploring Namibia before finishing in the capital, Windhoek.
How long is the trip and where does it start and finish?
The trip runs for 15 days, starting in Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) and ending in Windhoek (Namibia). An airport transfer is included on arrival into Victoria Falls and on departure from Windhoek International Airport.
What are the main highlights of the itinerary?
Highlights include a visit to Victoria Falls (one of the seven natural wonders of the world), a Chobe National Park boat cruise where elephant herds of 40,000 to 60,000 line the riverbanks, safari activities on the Okavango River at Ngepi Camp, game drives through Etosha National Park (home to 4 of the Big 5), a stop at the Cape Cross Seal Colony on the Skeleton Coast, free time in adventure capital Swakopmund, and a guided Namib Desert walk before climbing Dune 45 at Sossusvlei.
What kind of vehicle will we travel on?
You travel on an Oasis Overland expedition truck with 24 seats. The truck is fitted with seatbelts throughout, and also has a beach area (a chill-out zone used when the vehicle is stationary). For game drives in national parks, 4x4 safari vehicles are also used.
Is this trip suitable for children? What ages are eligible for the child discount?
Yes, this tour is designed specifically as a family overland adventure. Children aged 6 to 15 at the date of travel qualify for a discounted price when sharing a room or tent with one or two adults. For families with multiple children of different ages, we recommend contacting us for a tailored quote.
What is the group size for this tour?
The group runs with a minimum of 8 passengers and a maximum of 18 (plus the two Oasis crew). The truck seats 24, so there is always plenty of space for your family to spread out.
Is there a related tour we could combine with this one?
Yes. The Tanzania Family Overland trip runs from Nairobi to Zanzibar and is designed to connect directly with the start of this tour in Victoria Falls. The two trips can be combined if you want an extended African family adventure.
What does the tour price include?
The price covers all overland transport on the Oasis expedition truck, arrival and departure airport transfers, camping equipment (tents), cooking equipment, the services of two Oasis crew (driver and tour leader), approximately 80% of meals (15 breakfasts, 11 lunches and 11 dinners), the Victoria Falls entrance ticket, the Chobe National Park boat cruise, the Okavango River sunset boat trip in Rundu, Etosha National Park entry and game drives, Cape Cross Seal Colony, the guided Namib Desert bushman walk, the Sossusvlei jeep trip, and Namib-Naukluft National Park and Dune 45.
What is not included in the price?
Not included are international flights, visa fees, sleeping bags and camping mats (you bring your own), optional activities, compulsory travel insurance, meals not listed in the itinerary, drinks and personal expenses, tips for guides and drivers, and entrance fees or activities not listed in the inclusions.
How much spending money should we budget beyond the tour price?
Based on past traveller feedback, allow roughly the equivalent of a hundred to a hundred and forty-five pounds per person per week to cover meals out, soft drinks, communications, souvenirs and general spending. Budget separately for visa costs and optional activities. Children's individual spending needs will vary.
Are tips included or do we need to budget for those separately?
Tips are not included. For Oasis crew, a suggested amount is around two to five US dollars per crew member per day if you feel the service merits it, though tipping is entirely at your discretion. Local guides and activity providers may also appreciate tips; your crew will advise on customary amounts as you go.
How physically demanding is this overland trip?
The tour is designed for active families and involves a mix of game drives, guided walks, boat cruises and optional activities such as sand boarding or canoeing. Climbing Dune 45 at Sossusvlei is a highlight but entirely optional. Driving days can involve several hours on bumpy roads, which can be uncomfortable for anyone with a bad back. If you have any concerns about fitness or a pre-existing condition, please contact us before booking.
Do we need to help with cooking and camp duties on the overland truck?
Yes, as part of the overland spirit you are expected to get involved in day-to-day tasks such as cooking meals over open fires, pitching tents and keeping the truck clean and tidy. Cook groups rotate so each family cooks only once or twice during the trip. Your crew and fellow travellers will always lend a hand.
What is the minimum age to join this tour?
Children from age 6 upwards are welcome and eligible for the discounted child price (ages 6 to 15). There is no upper age limit, though travellers aged 65 and over will be asked to complete a short medical questionnaire approximately 30 days before departure.
Is it safe to travel through Zimbabwe Botswana and Namibia?
Yes, southern Africa is one of the safest, most welcoming, and family-friendly regions on the continent. Botswana and Namibia enjoy great political stability and low crime rates, while tourist areas in Zimbabwe (like Victoria Falls) are very hospitable and secure. You'll be travelling in a custom-built, secure overland safari vehicle led by experienced crew members who prioritize your family's safety and comfort at every stage.
Is travel insurance compulsory on this tour?
Yes. Travel insurance is compulsory and must cover personal accident and liability, medical expenses and repatriation, and travel delay and abandonment. You will not be able to join the tour if you cannot provide valid insurance details at the start. We recommend World Nomads Travel Insurance, which covers over 150 adventure activities.
Is the Oasis truck safe and equipped for overland travel?
All Oasis trucks are fitted with seatbelts and are maintained to a high standard by your driver. The truck also carries an onboard safe for securing cash and passports. Crew are essentially on call around the clock and are experienced in managing changing conditions and border crossings.
What financial protection do I have if I book this tour?
Encounters Travel is UK-registered and protects customer funds through a partnership with Trust My Travel Ltd, which holds an insurance policy covering your payments. In the event of insolvency, you are entitled to a refund for unfulfilled services and, where applicable, repatriation to the UK.
What should solo parents know before joining this tour with their children?
If you are travelling as a sole parent, Botswana and Namibia both require you to carry an affidavit signed by the other parent confirming consent for the child to travel without them. The affidavit must include the children's names, dates of birth and passport details, plus the other parent's contact details, and must be signed and stamped by a police station or lawyer. Please also bring an original or certified copy of each child's birth certificate (full version, not an abbreviated one) for the Namibia border crossing.
What is the mix of accommodation on this tour?
Approximately 65% of nights are spent camping in Oasis three-person tents (used by two people or arranged to suit your family), and approximately 35% are in hotels, lodges or permanent camps. Hotels used include Victoria Falls Rest Camp (en-suite lodges), Amanpuri Travellers Lodge in Swakopmund and Sweet Thorn Retreat in Windhoek.
Do we need to bring our own sleeping bags and camping mats?
Yes. Sleeping bags and camping mats are not provided and must be brought with you. Tents are supplied by Oasis. Camping facilities vary across the campsites: some are well-equipped with hot showers, while bush camp sites have more basic facilities.
Can we upgrade our accommodation at Ngepi Camp?
Yes. While the standard accommodation at Ngepi Camp on the Okavango River is camping in Oasis tents, the camp also has riverside treehouses (sleeping 2 to 5 people) and bush huts (sleeping up to 4). These upgrades cover both nights at the camp and can be booked in advance. Treehouses are allocated on a first come, first served basis, so contact us early if you are interested.
Are the camp facilities suitable for families with young children?
Most campsites have shower facilities, though standards vary. The Ngepi Camp has a unique floating swimming pool in the river. Victoria Falls Rest Camp, Amanpuri Lodge and Sweet Thorn Retreat all have comfortable rooms with private bathrooms, Wi-Fi and other amenities. Your crew will always brief you on what to expect at each stop.
How are meals handled on an overland trip?
Around 80% of meals are included (15 breakfasts, 11 lunches and 11 dinners). When camping, meals are cooked by a rotating cook group using gas or open fires. Breakfasts are simple (cereals, toast, hot drinks, occasional cooked breakfast), lunches are quick and cold (sandwiches, salads), and dinners are more substantial, including braais, stews and pasta dishes. Several group meals at local restaurants are also included.
Can dietary requirements be catered for on this overland tour?
Your tour leaders will do their best to accommodate dietary requirements, though variety may be more limited than for meat eaters. For specific allergies, intolerances or very particular diets, we recommend bringing some of your own supplies, as specialist or imported foods are not always available locally and cannot be purchased from the group cooking budget.
Is it safe to drink the tap water in Zimbabwe Botswana and Namibia?
While tap water in major towns in Namibia and Botswana is generally treated, we advise drinking bottled, filtered, or purified water throughout your journey across Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia to prevent any sensitive stomachs. Our overland safari truck is equipped with safe drinking water tanks for refilling reusable bottles, and bottled water is readily available to purchase throughout the trip.
Is this tour suitable for solo travellers without children?
This tour is designed as a family overland adventure and is particularly well-suited to families travelling with children aged 6 and above. Solo travellers without children are welcome, though the family focus of the group, the camping and cooking rota, and the child discount structure all reflect that family audience.
What is the group dynamic like on an overland trip?
Groups run with 8 to 18 passengers and two Oasis crew. Because you cook together, set up camp together and share the same vehicle throughout, there is a strong sense of community. Families typically form close bonds with other families during the two weeks, and the shared experience of the wildlife, landscapes and activities brings the group together naturally.
What visas are needed for Zimbabwe Botswana and Namibia?
Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Many passport holders (including UK, US, EU, Canadian, and Australian citizens) can enter Namibia and Botswana visa-free for tourism. For Zimbabwe, most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Victoria Falls (or online in advance); the KAZA UniVisa is also available on arrival if you plan to visit both Zimbabwe and Zambia. We always recommend checking current entry rules and ensuring your passport has at least 6 months' validity and plenty of blank pages for border stamps.
What vaccinations are recommended for this tour?
For all three countries on this trip, recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid. Malaria is present across Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia, so you should discuss anti-malarial prophylaxis with your GP or a travel clinic. A Yellow Fever certificate may be required if you are arriving from or transiting through a Yellow Fever-infected area. Always confirm current requirements with a medical professional before travelling.
What currency should we bring?
US dollar cash is the most practical currency for this trip and is used for visa payments, optional activities and many purchases in Zimbabwe. South African rand can also be useful in Namibia. Bring at least 50% of your budget in cash, as ATMs are not always available in remote areas and some machines may not accept foreign cards. Visa and Maestro cards have the widest ATM acceptance; MasterCard can have limited access in some parts of Africa.
How early should we arrive in Victoria Falls?
Aim to arrive at the Victoria Falls Rest Camp by 4pm on Day 1 so you can attend the pre-trip welcome meeting. If you would like to do any optional activities at the Falls that take more than an afternoon, we recommend arriving one or more days early. Our local representative Joy at Backpackers Bazaar can assist with activities and arrangements before the tour begins.
What should we expect in terms of driving days?
Driving days typically run from around 8am to 5pm with stops for lunch, shopping and local sights. Not every day involves long drives, and there are several multi-day stops where you have free time to explore, relax or do optional activities. On some days there will be early starts, and you can expect dust and the occasional bumpy road, especially in Namibia.
What optional activities are available during the tour?
Optional activities vary by location. At Victoria Falls, choices include white water rafting, bungee jumping, gorge swing and horse riding. At Ngepi Camp, options include mokoro dugout canoe trips, game walks and 4x4 game drives. In Swakopmund, you can join a catamaran dolphin and whale cruise, kayak with seals, go sandboarding, fat biking or quad biking. At the Himba Village, there is an optional cultural visit. At Chobe, there is an optional afternoon game drive.
Can we add extra nights before or after the tour?
Yes. You can add extra nights at the Victoria Falls Rest Camp before the tour starts (various room types are available, from dorm beds to en-suite family lodges). Extra nights in Windhoek at the end can also be arranged. Contact us and we can add these to your booking.
Can this tour be run on a private basis for just our family?
Most of our group tours, including this one, can be run on a private basis for your family group. A private departure gives you full flexibility over pace and customisation. However, the minimum group size of 8 passengers still applies for overland truck operations. Contact us to discuss options and pricing.
When is full payment due?
Full payment is due 8 weeks before the departure date. You can make a deposit online to secure your place, or hold a reservation if you prefer, and then complete payment closer to the deadline. Payments are accepted by debit or credit card (subject to a card processing fee) or by bank transfer.
What is the cancellation policy?
Full booking conditions, including cancellation terms and any applicable fees, are set out on the Encounters Travel website. We recommend reviewing these before booking. Travel insurance that includes cancellation cover is compulsory on this tour.
How do I book this tour?
Complete the online reservation form via the Dates and Prices tab on the tour page. You can pay a deposit, make full payment or hold a reservation online. We will then contact you with instructions for completing your booking. If you have questions before booking, please contact us directly.
