Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Egyptian Family Adventure tour?
Egyptian Family Adventure is a 12-day family tour from Cairo to Cairo that covers Egypt's greatest hits at a pace that works for children as well as adults. You'll see the Pyramids and Sphinx, cruise the Nile on a private felucca sailboat, visit a Nubian school and village in Aswan, search for temples in the Valley of Kings, and finish with a 4-night All Inclusive stay at the Sunrise Garden Beach Resort in Hurghada on the Red Sea. The 5-star hotels, private guiding and carefully planned children's activities make this a genuine upgrade on Egypt tours that merely tolerate families.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Egypt?
It's designed for it. The itinerary covers Cairo, the Nile Valley and the Red Sea in a logical, well-paced sequence, with an Egyptologist guide handling everything. For families visiting Egypt for the first time, having a guide who knows how to make ancient history engaging for children is particularly valuable.
What's the difference between this and the Nile Family Adventure?
Egyptian Family Adventure is 12 days and adds Hurghada and the Red Sea to the Nile Valley circuit, giving children (and parents) beach and snorkelling time after the cultural sections. The Nile Family Adventure is a shorter, purely Nile-focused itinerary without the Red Sea extension. If the combination of ancient history and beach is what you're looking for, the Egyptian Family Adventure delivers both.
What's the best time of year for this tour?
October to April is the most comfortable window for Egypt's ancient sites: temperatures are manageable and the skies are reliably clear. Summer (June to September) is very hot on the Nile, though the Red Sea section is pleasant year-round. The tour runs throughout the year; most families prefer the school-holiday months of July, August, October half-term and the Christmas/Easter periods.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Egypt family packages. This tour is built around 5-star hotels throughout: Hyatt Centric Cairo West for the city nights, DoroKa Nubian House in Aswan, Sonesta St George in Luxor, and 4 nights All Inclusive at Sunrise Garden Beach Resort Hurghada. Add in the overnight sleeper train in private twin-berth cabins, a private felucca sailboat night with support vessel, an Egyptologist guide throughout, all transport in private AC vehicles, and the Nubian school and village experiences, and you can see where the value is built.
What's actually included in the price?
Included are 4 nights in 5-star Cairo/Luxor hotels, 4 nights All Inclusive at the Hurghada Red Sea resort, 1 night in a traditional Nubian style hotel in Aswan, 1 night on an overnight sleeper train in private twin-berth cabins, 1 night on a felucca sailboat with accompanying support boat, all transport and transfers in private AC vehicles, an Egyptologist guide for all sightseeing, a traditional Koshary lunch in Cairo, Nubian Village and Nubian School experiences (school in term-time only), and meals as indicated in the itinerary.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included are international flights, Egyptian visa fees, travel insurance, entrance fees (allow the local equivalent of a modest amountper adult and a published amount for children under 12), a tipping kitty (a modest current amount per adult; children under 12 are exempt), drinks and personal spending, hotel gala dinners on Christmas and New Year's Eve if applicable, and guide tips. Your guide will brief current entrance fee and tipping amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Secure your place with a deposit or use the reserve-now-pay-later option. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
This is a sightseeing tour, not an adventure trip. The main physical consideration is heat: Egypt's ancient sites involve walking on uneven ground in the sun, which can tire younger children and older adults. The pace is relaxed and appropriate for families. The Red Sea section at Hurghada is beach and pool time.
What's the minimum age for this tour?
The minimum age is 5 years old. The tour has been designed specifically for families with children, and the Nubian school experience and felucca night are activities that work well for children of all ages. Child discounts are available for children under 12.
What if someone in our party has mobility issues?
Egypt's ancient sites, including the Valley of Kings and Karnak Temple, involve significant walking on uneven ground and steps in the heat. Some of the tombs require ducking and climbing. Wheelchair access is very limited at most sites. If anyone in your family has significant mobility limitations, contact us to discuss what is and isn't manageable.
Is Egypt safe to visit with children?
Egypt is a popular destination for families and has been welcoming international visitors for decades. Tourist areas are well-managed and heavily visited. The main practical concerns are the heat (keep children hydrated and in the shade), food hygiene (stick to restaurant meals and bottled water), and the persistent but manageable presence of vendors at popular sites. Your Egyptologist guide is with you throughout.
Is it safe for women travelling with the family?
Yes. Egypt is a busy tourist destination and families with children are warmly welcomed. In cities and tourist areas, female travellers generally find the experience manageable, especially as part of a guided group. Modest dress (covering shoulders and knees at sites) is respectful and practical.
What happens if someone gets sick on tour?
Egypt has medical facilities in Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and Hurghada. Your guide will help you access care. The Red Sea resort at Hurghada has medical services on site. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical cover is compulsory. No malaria prophylactics are needed for Egypt.
What's the accommodation actually like?
The tour is built around 5-star hotels throughout: Hyatt Centric Cairo West (5-star, family-friendly) in Cairo, DoroKa Nubian House (Nubian style guesthouse) in Aswan, Sonesta St George (5-star, Nile views) in Luxor, and Sunrise Garden Beach Resort in Hurghada (5-star All Inclusive with beach, pool and water sports). Add in the private felucca night with support boat (toilet and shower on the support vessel) and the overnight sleeper train's private twin-berth cabins for a varied and memorable journey.
What's the felucca night like?
You spend one night aboard a traditional Nile sailboat (felucca) between Aswan and Luxor. The felucca has mattresses and sleeping bags on deck; a separate support boat with toilet and shower accompanies you for comfort. The felucca night is one of the tour highlights: drifting on the Nile under stars with your family. Note that the sleeping arrangements are al fresco, so it's a genuine adventure experience rather than luxury accommodation.
What's the Red Sea resort like?
The Sunrise Garden Beach Resort in Hurghada is a 5-star All Inclusive beachfront resort with pools, beach, restaurants and water sports facilities. The 4 nights here give families a chance to unwind, snorkel in the Red Sea, and decompress after the cultural intensity of the Nile Valley.
Will we have Wi-Fi?
All the 5-star hotels and the Hurghada resort have Wi-Fi. The felucca night and some sections on the Nile will have limited connectivity.
What kind of food will we eat?
A traditional Koshary lunch (Egypt's street-food classic, a mix of rice, pasta, lentils and tomato sauce) is included in Cairo. The 5-star hotels provide a variety of international and Egyptian cuisine. The All Inclusive resort in Hurghada offers a broad range of options suited to family palates. Children are catered for well throughout.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water throughout Egypt. Do not drink tap water. We recommend bringing a Water-to-Go filter bottle for convenience and to reduce plastic waste. Use code ENCOUNTERS25 for 25% off.
Is this trip good for solo parents travelling with children?
Yes. Many solo parents travel on this tour. The group size (minimum 3, maximum 16) is friendly and manageable with children, and the Egyptologist guide handles logistics so you can focus on your family's experience. A single room supplement applies for solo adults.
Do we have to share rooms with other families?
No. All accommodation on the tour is in private rooms for your family group. The minimum booking is 3 passengers (typical family configuration).
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Minimum 3, maximum 16. The tour is specifically designed for families, so you'll be travelling with other families with children.
Can I book this as a private family tour?
Yes. Private departures are available on flexible dates, ideal if you want to travel at school-holiday times when group departures may be full, or if you want to customise the itinerary. Contact us for a quotation.
Do I need a visa for Egypt?
An Egyptian tourist visa is required for most nationalities. We recommend applying in advance using the official online e-visa system at visa2egypt.gov.eg. Canadian passport holders must obtain a visa from the Egyptian Consulate before travel. Most other nationalities can use the e-visa online. Check current requirements for your nationality before travel.
What should I pack for the family?
Light, loose cotton clothing for the hot weather; layers for cool evenings. Modest clothing (covering shoulders and knees) for all temple and mosque visits. Children should have sun hats, high-factor sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes. Bring swimming gear for the Red Sea resort. A small day backpack per child is useful for carrying water and sunscreen.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations for Egypt include Tetanus, Typhoid and Hepatitis A. No malaria prophylactics are needed. Consult your GP or family travel clinic for current advice, ideally 6-8 weeks before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. International flights are not included. You fly into Cairo International Airport (CAI) or Sphinx International Airport (SPX). Airport transfers are included on arrival and departure.
What about tipping?
A tipping kitty covers drivers, boat crew, hotel staff and local helpers throughout. This is collected by your guide at the start of the tour. Children under 12 do not contribute to the kitty. Your Egyptologist guide is tipped separately at the end of the tour based on your satisfaction. Your guide will advise on current amounts.
Can we do a hot air balloon over Luxor?
Yes. A hot air balloon ride over Luxor at sunrise is one of Egypt's most memorable experiences and is available as a paid add-on. Flying over the Valley of Kings and the Nile floodplain in the early morning light is spectacular, and children old enough to appreciate heights find it thrilling.
Can we visit Abu Simbel?
Yes. An overland excursion to Abu Simbel is available as a paid add-on from Aswan. The two temples of Ramesses II and Nefertari are one of Egypt's most dramatic ancient sites and are appropriate for older children who can appreciate the scale.
Can we fly instead of taking the sleeper train?
Yes. A Cairo to Aswan flight upgrade is available as a paid add-on if your family prefers not to take the overnight sleeper train. The sleeper train experience is an adventure in itself for many children, but if your family includes very young children or light sleepers, the flight is a practical alternative.
Can we add the Wadi Rayan or Pyramids camel ride?
Yes. A Wadi Rayan (Valley of Whales) excursion and a Pyramids camel ride are both available as paid add-ons. Ask the guide on arrival to arrange these if you haven't pre-booked.
How far ahead should I book?
Christmas, Easter and summer school holidays sell out months in advance. Book as early as possible for these periods, ideally 6 months or more ahead. School-term departures are more available but still popular.
How does booking work?
Reserve online through the Dates & Prices tab. Pay a deposit or use the reserve-now-pay-later option. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure. The tour is also available as a private departure if group dates don't suit your family's schedule.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Travel insurance is compulsory and must cover the whole family, including children. The policy must cover medical expenses and emergency evacuation. World Nomads Travel Insurance covers families and over 150 adventure activities.
What's your cancellation policy?

First let me say, if you are hesitating to visit Egypt, DON'T. Just go, it is safe, they are waiting to show you their country and the incredible history documented there. Security is everywhere and as a solo traveling female, I felt as safe as ever there.
I joined the Nubian adventure after spending 5 days in Egypt, exploring the things I wouldn't see on the tour, on my own. Let me tell you, my first meeting with the guide, Waleed Kamouna, was indicative of what to expect from this wonderful man for the rest of the trip. He came to my rescue while I was trying to tell the front desk people at the hotel who I was and why I was there. He took over and the next thing I know I have a room key and am off to my room. Throughout the tour, which was fabulous by the way, Waleed showed his love for his country and its people, his knowledge of Egyptian history and the land and his concern for us, (his 'family' for the 9 days) our welfare, comfort and safety. He was always ready to give tips on how to get the most out of our experience, always went the extra mile to make sure we were comfortable and safe and made sure we had the opportunity to see everything we wanted to and to experience all that our Nubian Adventure had to offer. I am sure that Waleed made the experience, the Nubian Adventure Tour, so much better than it would have been without him. I appreciate all he did for us and all the extra steps and arrangements he made to accomodate us. Thank you Waleed and thank you Encounters Travel for such a well oiled machine that you run. I would recommend this company and this tour to anyone looking for an inclusive tour of Egypt.

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

From the time we landed in Cairo we were treated as VIP’s. Nadine our Tour leader kept on checking on us throughout the journey. We were fortunate to have Fayed and Hossam as the tour guides, they took their time to explain the sites throughout each excursion. Everyone made us feel safe and well looked after.

Wonderful time with friends. The land of Egypt is hard to describe in a few words. The history is so immense I will need to come back again and again. The accommodations were above par and the people from Encounters Travel are very helpful. I would your with them again.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Transfers

Our Egypt tours include a 24-hour airport meet & assist service in Cairo airport, your arrival and departure airport-hotel transfers and all other transfers. Our representative will meet you in the immigration hall of Cairo airport before you get to passport control (if you are flying into Sphinx International Airport, our representative will be waiting outside, after you have passed through immigration and re-claimed your luggage). They will assist with visa formalities before helping you collect your luggage and taking you to your hotel.

Your airport transfers are only included on the first and last day of the set tour itinerary, plus on any additional days if you book your hotel room with us. If you make your own arrangements for additional accommodation at either the beginning or the end of the tour then you will need to arrange your own airport transfers on these days.
