This carefully curated itinerary blends a spectacular celestial event with the rich historical tapestry and diverse landscapes of North Africa. Your adventure begins in the capital, Tunis, where you will explore the UNESCO-listed Medina and the ancient ruins of Carthage, before indulging in the country’s unsung viticulture with an exclusive wine tasting in the Grombalia region. The historical immersion continues as you journey south to marvel at the colossal Amphitheatre of El Jem, one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the world, setting the stage for the main event: a prime viewing of the total solar eclipse from the shores of Chaffar Beach.
Beyond the eclipse, the tour takes you deep into the cinematic landscapes of the south, a region that famously doubled as the planet Tatooine in the Star Wars saga. You will traverse the lunar-like terrain of Matmata to sleep in troglodyte dwellings and visit the iconic Hotel Sidi Idriss, followed by a venture into the vast Sahara at Douz. The desert experience is comprehensive, featuring a sunrise over the Chott el-Jerid salt lake, off-road 4x4 expeditions to the Mos Espa film set, and tranquil walks through the mountain oases of Chebika and Tamezret. Whether you are navigating the bustling souks of Tozeur or standing amidst the golden dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental, every moment is designed to connect you with the raw beauty of the desert.
The return journey to the north is equally enriching, offering a spiritual visit to Kairouan, the fourth holiest city in the Islamic world, to admire the Great Mosque of Okba Ibn Nafaa. Your cultural odyssey concludes back in Tunis with a visit to the world-renowned Bardo Museum, home to exquisite Roman mosaics, and a relaxing afternoon in the artist’s village of Sidi Bou Said, famous for its striking blue-and-white architecture overlooking the Mediterranean. From the darkness of the eclipse to the bright azure of the coast, this tour promises a comprehensive and unforgettable exploration of Tunisia’s most treasured sights.
