Why book the Maldives Active Adventure tour?
The Maldives Active Adventure is an 8-day small-group tour from Male to Male that goes well beyond the typical resort experience. Based at Reveries Guesthouse on Gan island in Laamu Atoll, you spend a week sea kayaking through the inner atoll with picnic lunches on sandbars, learning to scuba dive at the PADI-registered Reveries dive club (or exploring by boat if you're already qualified), stand-up paddleboarding, cycling the Link Road palm boulevard through four connected islands, taking a jeep safari past the mysterious Red Lake and ancient Buddhist ruins, and finishing with a BBQ on a Robinson Crusoe-style uninhabited island. Laamu Atoll was also the filming location for Planet Scarif in Star Wars Rogue One. It is the Maldives for people who want to actually do something.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to the Maldives?
Yes. All water activities are taught from scratch. The Discover Scuba course on Day 4 introduces you to equipment and safety guidelines under direct one-to-one supervision from a PADI professional, with two shore dives included. Kayaking coaching happens before you leave the beach. You do not need to be an experienced water sports person to enjoy this tour.
What is the difference between this and your other Maldives tours?
The Maldives Active Adventure (8 days) is the most activity-packed option, built around water sports and island exploration at Reveries Guesthouse on Gan, Laamu Atoll. The Maldives Uncovered tour (8 days) is a lower-priced option with a different focus. The Maldives Island Explorer (8 days) offers another itinerary for those who want more island-hopping. The Active Adventure is the right choice if you want structured daily activities rather than purely a beach relaxation holiday.
What is the best time of year to visit?
The Maldives is a year-round destination with warm water temperatures averaging 28C throughout the year. Scuba diving is excellent year-round. The dry northeast monsoon season (January to March) brings the best visibility for diving. The southwest monsoon (mid-May to November) brings occasional heavier rain showers but these are typically short. Wind can affect kayaking and paddleboarding on specific days, in which case activities are rescheduled within the week.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Maldives packages floating around. The Maldives Active Adventure includes 7 nights of half-board accommodation at the 4-star Reveries Guesthouse (23 rooms, pool, rooftop mocktail bar, private female sunbathing beach), all domestic flights to and from Gan, a full-day kayak safari with picnic lunch, the PADI-registered scuba diving course or qualified diver boat dives, stand-up paddleboard session with instructor, jeep and bicycle island exploration, an uninhabited island BBQ day, all snorkelling gear, and a 24-hour airport arrival and departure service. That is a fully programmed week of guided water sports and exploration, not a passive beach stay.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 7 nights half-board accommodation at Reveries Guesthouse on Gan (7 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 7 dinners), all transport and transfers including domestic flights between Male and Gan, 24-hour airport arrival and departure service, snorkelling gear throughout the Gan stay, and all activities detailed in the itinerary with required equipment (kayaking, scuba diving, SUP, jeep safari, bicycle exploration, uninhabited island BBQ). A free 30-day tourist visa on arrival is included for all nationalities.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights to and from Male, travel insurance (compulsory), drinks with meals, snacks, tips, and optional extras. Alcohol is not available on local islands (the Maldives is a Muslim country), though a private beach sunbathing area is available for female guests at Reveries. Budget for personal spending money for local island shops, extra optional dives for certified divers, and any resort visit you arrange on the free day.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can reserve online with a deposit, or hold a place, with full payment due 8 weeks before departure. Payment by card (processing fee applies), bank transfer, or cheque is accepted.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Moderate activity level. Kayaking sessions are several hours long, and the stand-up paddleboarding session involves learning a new skill that requires balance and core strength. Cycling the Link Road is a gentle flat ride. Scuba diving for beginners involves shore entry. There is no altitude, no trekking, and free time is built in each day so you can rest when you want. If you are reasonably fit and comfortable in the water, you will be fine.
Is the scuba diving suitable for non-divers?
Yes. If you have never dived before, Day 4 is a Discover Scuba experience run by the PADI-registered Reveries dive club. You receive safety training and complete two shore dives under direct supervision of a PADI professional. No prior experience or certification needed. If you prefer not to dive at all, an extra snorkelling boat trip is provided at no extra cost.
What if I have mobility issues?
The activities involve boarding boats from beaches, kayak entry and exit from waterline, and cycling on flat ground. If you have significant mobility restrictions, contact us before booking to discuss which activities are accessible for you. The free afternoons each day provide good rest opportunities.
What if I am a strong swimmer but not a confident diver?
The Discover Scuba experience on Day 4 is designed for exactly this situation. You start in shallow water with close supervision before going further. The dive club instructors are experienced with nervous beginners. Water temperature is a comfortable 28C year-round and visibility is generally excellent.
Is the Maldives safe to visit?
The Maldives is one of the safest destinations for international tourists. Petty crime affecting visitors is rare. The main considerations are water safety during activities (life jackets are used for kayaking, dive safety briefings are thorough) and sun protection in an equatorial climate. Your local representatives are with you throughout and know the waters well.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. The Maldives is a very safe destination for solo female travellers. The main thing to be aware of is the dress code on local islands: swimwear should be covered up outside the guesthouse, though Reveries provides a private beach area for female guests to sunbathe in bikinis. Modest dress (covered shoulders and thighs) is required when visiting local homes, markets, and any mosques.
What happens if I get sick or injured on tour?
The tour notes confirm that a decompression chamber is within easy reach of most areas in case of a diving emergency. The two main hospitals are in Male. Travel insurance covering medical expenses and emergency repatriation is compulsory for this tour. Ensure your policy covers scuba diving and water sports.
What about the rules on alcohol?
Alcohol is prohibited on inhabited local islands under Maldivian law. Reveries Guesthouse offers a mocktail bar (non-alcoholic cocktails). The uninhabited island BBQ day and picnic island visits do allow for a more relaxed atmosphere. If drinking alcohol is important to you, the resort extension options at the end of the tour are based on tourist resort islands where alcohol is available.
What is Reveries Guesthouse like?
Reveries is a contemporary 4-star guesthouse with 23 rooms on Gan island, set in a garden directly on the beach. Facilities include a restaurant, a rooftop mocktail bar, a garden BBQ area, a plunge pool, a boutique, a gym, an entertainment area, and a wellness centre. Rooms have air conditioning and en-suite bathrooms. The guesthouse's location on Gan gives you access to the longest beach in the Maldives (7.8km of white sand), plus snorkelling directly off the house reef.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Yes, Reveries Guesthouse has Wi-Fi. Connectivity on the outer uninhabited island day trips will be limited or absent.
Can I upgrade or extend my stay?
Yes. Two resort extensions are available at the end of the tour. The 4-night Gulhi Island Extension is at Tropic Tree Maldives on Gulhi island, a 25-minute boat journey from Male airport. The 4-night Barefoot Eco Resort Extension is at the Barefoot Eco Hotel and Villas on Hanimaadhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, reached by a 45-minute domestic flight. Both include breakfast and return transfers. Contact us to add either extension when booking.
Can I stay an extra night near the airport?
Yes. Extra nights at Hulhumale Inn (near Male airport) are available before and after the tour, with airport transfers included. This is useful if you have an early departure flight on the day of your return to Male.
What kind of food will we eat?
The main Maldivian diet is built around tuna, coconut, white rice, and roshi (a flour-based flatbread). Fish is prepared smoked, fried, barbecued, or roasted. The Hedika experience on Day 3 lets you try traditional Maldivian savoury and sweet short eats with black tea. The uninhabited island day includes a freshly prepared BBQ lunch. Reveries restaurant serves a mix of local and international dishes. Note that pork products are strictly prohibited across the Maldives.
Can you cater for vegetarian vegan or gluten-free diets?
Let us know your dietary requirements when booking. Maldivian cuisine is naturally fish-heavy, but guesthouses and local restaurants can generally prepare vegetarian alternatives. Vegan and gluten-free requests need to be communicated in advance so the kitchen at Reveries can prepare accordingly.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Do not drink tap water. Stick to bottled mineral water throughout. Bringing a Water-to-Go filter bottle (use code ENCOUNTERS25 for a discount) helps cut down on single-use plastic. The tour notes also mention water purification tablets as an eco-friendly option.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The small group setting (up to 14 travellers) means you quickly meet and bond with your fellow adventurers through shared activities. The daily group activities make natural conversation easy. Single supplements are available if you want a private room.
Do I have to share a room?
The tour price is based on two people sharing. A single supplement is available if you want your own room throughout. Contact us if you would prefer to try and share with another solo traveller.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
The tour runs with a minimum of 2 and the group listing shows a small maximum, making this a genuinely intimate experience. Groups typically include adventurous travellers of all ages, solo travellers, and couples looking for an active Maldives experience rather than a passive resort stay.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures are available on request on any date. Contact the sales team for a quotation.
Is this tour suitable for children?
The Maldives Active Adventure is best suited to adults and older teenagers. Activities like scuba diving and kayaking require a reasonable level of physical confidence and maturity. Contact us to discuss if you are planning to travel with children.
Do I need a visa for the Maldives?
No prior visa arrangement is needed. A free 30-day tourist visa is issued on arrival to all nationalities. You need a passport valid for at least 6 months and proof of onward travel. All passengers must also complete the IMUGA online traveller declaration form within 96 hours of arrival.
What should I pack?
Lightweight casual cotton clothing, swimwear (rash guards recommended for snorkelling to prevent sunburn), reef shoes, sandals, sun hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and an underwater camera. UK-style three-pin sockets at 220 volts: bring an adapter if you use European or US plugs. Domestic flights within the Maldives have a 15kg luggage limit, so pack light. Bring your PADI logbook if you are a qualified diver.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccines for the Maldives include Hepatitis A and Tetanus. Malaria is not present in the Maldives and prophylactics are not required. A Yellow Fever certificate is required if arriving from a country with Yellow Fever risk. Check with your GP or a travel clinic for personalised, up-to-date advice.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No, international flights are not included. You arrange your own flights to and from Male International Airport (MLE). Plan for an afternoon or evening departure from Male on Day 8, as the domestic flight back from Gan needs to land in Male before your onward flight departs.
What about tipping?
Tipping is accepted in the Maldives and appreciated for good service, though it is not compulsory. The tour notes suggest budgeting up to approximately 5% of the tour price across the week if you feel the service warrants it. More guidance will be in your pre-departure information.
Can I add more scuba dives?
Yes. On the free day (Day 6), optional extra diving trips can be arranged for qualified divers through the Reveries dive club. Additional snorkelling boat trips are also available.
Can I visit a Six Senses resort?
A visit to the Six Senses resort can be arranged on Day 6 (the free day), subject to availability. Ask your local representative on arrival to check current availability and arrange the visit.
Can I add a 4-night resort extension?
Yes. Two resort extensions are available: the 4-night Gulhi Island Extension at Tropic Tree Maldives (25 minutes from Male airport by public boat) and the 4-night Barefoot Eco Resort Extension at the Barefoot Eco Hotel and Villas on Hanimaadhoo (45-minute domestic flight from Male). Both include breakfast and return transfers. Book in advance when you make your main tour reservation.
How far ahead should I book?
Departures run weekly throughout the year. The guesthouse has only 23 rooms, so popular departure dates and high season periods fill up. Booking 2 to 4 months ahead is advisable, and further ahead if you also want to secure a resort extension.
How does booking work?
Complete the online reservation form on the Dates and Prices tab. Pay a deposit, pay in full, or hold a reservation (full payment due 8 weeks before departure). Confirmation by email follows with full preparation details.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. Your policy must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation, and personal accident. Crucially, it must explicitly cover scuba diving, as standard travel policies sometimes exclude this. A decompression chamber is within reach of the area, but evacuation from a remote atoll can still be costly without the right cover. World Nomads is one option that covers adventure activities.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale cancellation policy applies, with charges increasing the closer you are to the departure date. Full details are in the booking conditions. Encounters Travel is UK-registered and your funds are protected through Trust My Travel's insurance scheme.
What if my preferred dates are sold out?
Contact the team to join a waitlist or arrange a private departure on your preferred dates. The Maldives Uncovered or Maldives Island Explorer tours may also have availability if you need a Maldives trip on specific dates.
