Chitwan National Park is located in the southwest of Nepal, in the Sauraha region. It is found on the borders of Nepal and India, in the lowland Terai. This is in an area that is rich in biodiversity. It is a subtropical region that is extremely popular for tourism and holidays. Much research has also been done on the subject of the nature and culture of this region.
The park is situated at an altitude of 415m. On clear days, you are able to see the magnificent peaks of the Himalayas from the park.
In the area, you will find the city of Bharatpur, which is the 4th biggest city in Nepal. The town of Sauraha is found opposite the park. An interesting fact about this town is that it is home to a tame baby rhino, which can often be seen wandering around the riverbanks and even sometimes down the streets of the town.
Chitwan National Park was the first national park in Nepal. It was established in 1973, for the purpose of conserving the region's birds, plants, and animals. It has also been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.
There is a buffer zone around the park that is 750 square kilometres in size. This zone features forests and private cultivated areas. It also contains a Ramsar site called Beeshazari Lakes.
Chitwan National Park generally has warm weather throughout the year. The hottest months occur between March and June, during the summer. Temperatures can go up to 104°F or 40°C. From June until September, it is the monsoon season in Chitwan. Temperatures average around 82°F or 28°C. The most pleasant weather occurs from October to February- this is out of the monsoon season and temperatures are cooler. During these months, daytime temperatures average around 25°C/ 77°F, while night-time temperatures average about 5°C/ 41°F.
Chitwan National Park is home to a stunning diversity of flora and fauna species.
The following numbers have been recorded in the park: 126 species of fish, 544 species of birds, 68 species of mammals, and 56 species of reptiles and amphibians. Notable species found here include rhinos, tigers, and crocodiles.
One of the most famous animal species found inside Chitwan National Park is the Royal Bengal tiger. There are approximately 140 of the big cats inside the park. Spotting them is not an easy feat, and there is no guarantee that you will see one while on safari- but the possibility is always there, and seeing one of these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is a chance not be missed.
There are over 600 rhinos in the park. Other species include elephants, bears, and mongooses. The smallest terrestrial mammal in the world, the pygmy shrew, can also be found in Chitwan National Park.

Vehicle or jeep safaris are, of course, another popular and excellent type of experience to have in Chitwan National Park. Safari vehicles are able to traverse the terrain and cover large distances quickly, providing you with the opportunity to see the myriad wildlife species that call the park home.
Canoe safaris are another unique way of experiencing a safari in Chitwan National Park. One of the best times for this is in the early morning. Out on the Narayani River, you have the chance to spot different species of crocodiles. This is also a good way to enjoy the park's birdlife, which includes 22 globally-threatened species.
You can buy souvenirs and gifts at the Women's User Group souvenir shop. You can also go to the Visitor Centre in Sauraha, which offers a wealth of information on the wildlife and conservation of Chitwan.
A permit is required in order to enter Chitwan National Park. Fees for this permit differ depending on your nationality. The permit is valid for 24 hours. Children under the age of 10 years can enter the park for free.
Chitwan National Park can be reached from Kathmandu via a 4 to 6-hour drive, using either public or private transportation. Bharatpur Airport is around 22km away from the park, approximately an hour's drive.
Within the park itself, there are seven resorts that offer accommodation and safari activities. There is also a number of resorts and lodges situated outside the borders of the park.
