Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Anatolian Adventure tour?
The Anatolian Adventure packs 10 days of Turkey's greatest landmarks into a compact small-group itinerary that runs from Istanbul's iconic skyline all the way through Gallipoli, Troy, Ephesus, Pamukkale's otherworldly travertines, the Sufi heart of Konya, and Cappadocia's fairy-chimney landscape before looping back to the Bosphorus. You'll travel in a proper air-conditioned minibus with a maximum of 20 travellers, so it's intimate without being precious. It's a brilliant single trip for anyone who wants to cover the sweep of Turkish history, from Bronze Age Troy to Byzantine mosaics to Ottoman grandeur.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Turkey?
Absolutely. The Anatolian Adventure is built for first-timers. The 10-day itinerary is carefully sequenced so the big-ticket highlights arrive in a logical order, your guide handles all logistics, and the hotels are comfortable 4-5 star properties throughout. You don't need to know anything about Turkey before you arrive; you'll leave knowing a great deal.
What's the difference between this and your other Turkey tours?
The Anatolian Adventure (10 days, Istanbul loop) covers Gallipoli, Troy, Ephesus, Pamukkale, Konya, and Cappadocia. Discover Turkey (8 days) flies into Kusadasi and skips Gallipoli and Troy. Taste of Turkey (8 days) is a shorter highlights overview. Best of Turkey (11 days) runs the same route in reverse. Turkey Encounters (17 days) is the extended version that adds extra depth throughout. If you want the essential loop at a pace that breathes, the 10-day Anatolian Adventure is the sweet spot.
What's the best time of year to do this tour?
The Anatolian Adventure departs every Saturday, year-round. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer the most comfortable sightseeing temperatures across Istanbul, Ephesus, and Cappadocia. Summer is hot on the Aegean coast but wonderfully warm for Pamukkale's thermal pools. Winter touring is perfectly feasible; Cappadocia's fairy chimneys under snow are genuinely dramatic, and crowds are much thinner.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Turkey packages floating around. What you're getting here is nine breakfasts and six dinners included, 4-5 star hotels throughout, a professional English-speaking guide and driver for all 10 days, all internal transport in an air-conditioned minibus, and entrance fees to Gallipoli battlefield sites, Troy, Ephesus, Pamukkale, Hierapolis, the Sultanhani Caravanserai, the Mevlana Museum in Konya, and all Cappadocia sites. That's a lot of value baked into the headline price.
What's actually included in the price?
Included: 9 nights accommodation in 4-5 star hotels (MD Barbaros in Canakkale, Ilayda Avantgarde in Kusadasi, Adempira in Pamukkale, Gamirasu Cave Hotel in Urgup, Port Bosphorus in Istanbul), 9 breakfasts and 6 dinners, all entrance fees listed in the itinerary, air-conditioned minibus transport throughout, professional English-speaking guide and driver, and a tipping kitty.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, travel insurance, lunches, personal spending, and tips for your guide and driver are not included. Optional extras like cooking classes are also at your own cost. Your guide will brief you on current recommended tip amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can reserve your spot with a deposit and pay the balance later. The full balance is due 8 weeks before your departure date. If your trip is further out, you can hold the booking and pay closer to the time.
How physically demanding is this tour?
This is a moderate tour. You'll be doing a fair amount of walking on uneven ancient surfaces at Gallipoli, Troy, Ephesus (a large site with paved marble streets), Hierapolis, and Cappadocia's valleys. There are no strenuous hikes, but comfortable walking shoes with grip are essential. A reasonable base level of fitness means you'll enjoy every site fully.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
No issue at all. The Anatolian Adventure attracts a broad demographic, and the pace is designed to be enjoyable rather than punishing. Gallipoli and Ephesus involve extended walks on uneven ground, so bring well-soled shoes. If you have mobility concerns, flag them at booking so we can discuss any specific site limitations.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
Some sites are genuinely difficult for limited mobility. Ephesus, the ancient Roman city that once held 250,000 people, involves kilometres of marble and cobblestone. Cappadocia's cave churches and underground cities involve steps and narrow passages. If you have significant mobility challenges, a private departure lets us tailor the pace and choose accessible alternatives where possible.
How hot does it get?
On the Aegean coast and at Pamukkale in July and August, temperatures regularly reach 35-40°C. Cappadocia is slightly cooler. Istanbul is warm in summer and cold in winter. Pack layers for Cappadocia evenings, lightweight breathable clothing for the coast, and be prepared to cover shoulders and knees at mosques regardless of season.
Is Turkey safe to visit right now?
Turkey is a well-established tourism destination that welcomes tens of millions of visitors every year. The cities and sites on this itinerary, including Istanbul, Kusadasi, Pamukkale, and Cappadocia, are very well set up for international travellers. As with any destination, check your government's current travel advisory before departure and follow your guide's local knowledge on the ground.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Turkey is generally safe for solo female travellers and many women join this tour alone. The group setting provides natural companionship and security. Modesty is appreciated near religious sites; a scarf to cover hair when entering mosques is a good idea and easy to carry.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide is your first point of contact. Turkey has good private medical facilities in all the major cities on this route. Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation is compulsory for this tour, so you're covered if you need to see a doctor or be treated away from the group.
Will I be hassled by vendors and touts?
At popular sites like the Grand Bazaar and Ephesus there will be vendors, but Turkey's tourism industry is mature and persistent harassment is rare. Your guide will give you a quick orientation on the local customs of politely declining, and it becomes second nature very quickly.
What's the accommodation actually like?
All hotels are 4 or 5-star throughout. In Canakkale you stay at the MD Barbaros, in Kusadasi at the Ilayda Avantgarde (4-star, rooftop pool), in Pamukkale at the Adempira near the cotton castles, and in Istanbul at the Port Bosphorus. The real highlight is the Gamirasu Cave Hotel in Urgup, Cappadocia, where you sleep in rooms carved directly into the volcanic tufa rock.
What's the cave hotel like?
The Gamirasu Cave Hotel in Urgup is a genuinely special experience. Rooms are carved into ancient tufa caves, with thick stone walls that keep temperatures comfortable year-round. It has all the amenities of a boutique hotel, just with an extraordinary setting. Staying here is one of those experiences that makes this tour memorable beyond the sightseeing.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
All hotels on this tour have Wi-Fi. Signal quality varies but is generally good at 4-5 star properties in Istanbul, Kusadasi, and the larger Cappadocia hotels. Pack a Turkish SIM or activate a data roaming package for connectivity on the road between sites.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
Yes. Private departures can be arranged with upgraded accommodation options. Speak to us when booking if you'd like a bespoke version of this itinerary with specific property upgrades.
What kind of food will we eat?
Turkish cuisine is one of the great pleasures of this trip. Breakfasts are typically lavish Turkish spreads of cheese, olives, eggs, bread, and fresh produce. Included dinners give you a chance to try slow-cooked mezes, grilled meats, and regional specialities. In Konya you're near the heartland of Turkish home cooking, and Cappadocia has excellent cave restaurants. The six included dinners are excellent opportunities to eat with the group.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water throughout Turkey. Hotel rooms will supply it, and your guide will remind you. Bring a refillable bottle with a filter, such as a Water-to-Go bottle, to reduce plastic waste across the 10 days.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Very much so. A good proportion of people on each departure travel solo, and the small-group format (maximum 20 people) makes it easy to get to know fellow travellers quickly. The included dinners and shared minibus time create natural bonding moments.
Do I have to share a room?
No. A single supplement is available if you'd prefer your own room throughout. If you're happy to be paired with another solo traveller of the same gender, that option saves money and can be arranged at booking.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Minimum 2, maximum 20 travellers. Departures attract a mix of ages and nationalities, typically including solo travellers, couples, and friends. The common thread is genuine curiosity about history and culture. The group is small enough that you'll know everyone by name within a day.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The Anatolian Adventure is available as a private departure for families, couples, or groups wanting exclusive use of the vehicle and guide. Contact us to discuss dates and tailoring.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
There's no upper minimum age restriction listed for this tour, but the 10-day itinerary with multiple ancient sites every day suits older teenagers and adults better than young children. If you're travelling with family, ask us about the suitability for specific ages.
Do I need a visa for Turkey?
UK nationals do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days in Turkey. Other nationalities should check requirements on Turkey's official e-visa portal well before departure, as requirements vary.
What should I pack?
Comfortable walking shoes with grip are non-negotiable for Ephesus and Gallipoli. Pack modest clothing (covered shoulders and knees) for mosque visits. Lightweight layers work well across the 10-day temperature range. Turkey uses Type C plugs at 220V. A small day bag for sites is useful.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A and Tetanus. Check with your GP or a travel health clinic at least 6-8 weeks before departure to confirm what's right for your medical history.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. You arrange your own international flights into and out of Istanbul (IST or SAW). We can assist with flight recommendations if you ask, but booking is entirely up to you.
What about tipping?
A tipping kitty is included in the tour price to cover group service tips at restaurants and sites. Tips for your personal guide and driver are separate and not included. Your guide will brief you on current suggested amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I take a cooking class?
Yes. Cooking classes are available as optional extras in Cappadocia, Kusadasi, and Istanbul. These are popular add-ons and a lovely way to take a piece of Turkey home with you. Ask your guide on arrival.
Can I add extra days in Istanbul?
Yes. Extra days in Istanbul can be arranged before or after the tour. Istanbul rewards extra time: the Grand Bazaar, Bosphorus cruises, the Princes' Islands, and the waterfront neighbourhoods all deserve more than a quick visit. Ask at booking.
Can I combine this with another Turkey tour?
Yes. Turkey Encounters (17 days) is the extended version of this itinerary. If you want to go deeper into any region, speak to us about how to link tours or extend your stay.
How far ahead should I book?
Saturdays year-round means there's usually a departure available, but the small group cap of 20 means popular spring and autumn dates fill up. Booking 2-3 months ahead is sensible for peak season. For specific holiday weeks or school breaks, book earlier.
How does booking work?
Reserve online with a deposit. You'll get instant confirmation. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure. You can also use our reserve-now-pay-later option to lock in your spot without paying in full immediately.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is compulsory, and it must include medical evacuation and repatriation cover. We recommend World Nomads, though any policy meeting those requirements is acceptable.
What's your cancellation policy?
A sliding-scale cancellation policy applies, with charges increasing the closer to departure you cancel. Full terms are in the booking conditions. We're UK-registered and protected by Trust My Travel, so your money is safe if anything were to happen to the company.
What if my dates are sold out?
Contact us to join the waitlist for your preferred date. Alternatively, we can arrange a private departure on dates that suit you, or point you toward Discover Turkey (8 days), Best of Turkey (11 days), or Turkey Encounters (17 days) if those have availability.

I can really recommend to book a trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL. Stumbled across them by accident when i was searching the net for best prices. Being from South Africa with the weak ZAR they came out tops. Booked the 10 day Anatolian Adventure. All entrance fees was included. Thanks to Mariska for always getting back to me immediately. The tour surpassed my expectations and the accommodation provided was mostly 5 star. The tour guide Ilker (from Fez Travel) was amazing. He was very informative and not forgetting our good driver Irfaan. We had a small group of 10. Overall, a great trip. Worth every penny. Will definitely book my next trip through ENCOUNTERS TRAVEL

My partner and I recently had a two-week holiday in Turkey, organised through Encounters Travel. We wanted something tailored to our interests and availability, and Gavin at Encounters created a bespoke version of an existing tour for us. As we worked out what this tour might involve, it necessitated quite a few questions and answers going back and forth, as we refined our plans. Each time Gavin was very prompt to respond, did so in full, and very courteously. Encounters Travel liaised with all of the local agents and catered for everything we had asked for. We ended up having an absolutely fantastic (and wholly unforgettable) holiday, seeing sights that we would never have been able to fit in if we were trying to do it completely by ourselves. On the evidence of this trip, we would very strongly recommend them to others looking for an agent who'll help to take some of the hard work out of planning a holiday.

I bought a ticket thru living social at 3am when I couldn’t sleep and then said to myself “What did I just do?!” turns out what I did was make one of the BEST DECISIONS OF MY LIFE!!! The travel agency was easy to work with and always available via telephone (UK HOURS) I traveled alone for an additional few of 200 or something but they found me a roommate and I elected to take the roomie and get a refund on solo fee (another great decision..roomie was from Vegas and a great guy) I traveled from LA to Turkey and then to Cairo the planes were nice and roomie. They fed ya so much I was stuffed by the time I got to Turkey (tip: TURKEY AIRPORT SUCKS! It’s HUGE,all the gates are far apart and you are only guided by arrows and no one helps you,so move Swift if you have to meet a connecting flight) upon arrival to Cairo I was met by a sharply dressed man with a sign that greeted me in the traditional Muslim greeting and we were immediately friends! He walked me to get my visa ($20 American dollars cash) through customs and it was a breeze...with a guide it’s SPEEDY. We were met by a air condition car (IT WAS HOT) they took me to a hotel across the street from the pyramids and he checked me in. (Tip: Security is HIGH everywhere and you will be searched by security at all times entering and leaving.. you will never feel unsafe. Plan on seeing guards with machine guns in the street and hotels..you will grow accustomed to it) I was there for 10 days and EACH DAY GOT BETTER!! The food, hotels, monuments, experience and PRICE CANNOT BE BEAT!! I crawled inside of the Great Pyramid of Cheops, seen the Sphinx, slept overnight on a felucca on the Nile, took a sleeper train to Aswan, went to a Nubian Village for a traditional dinner, snorkeled in the Red Sea, toured the Cairo Museum,Sunrise Hot Air Ballon ride over the Valley of the Kings, stayed at a luxury all inclusive Sea Side resort in Hurghada, drove thru the Sahara Desert to monuments and witnessed the sunrise, toured downtown Cairo market, visited the Synagogue that Moses worshipped and the well he drank from, and so many things in between and I did it all for UNDER $1550 US dollars. No guess work, this company TAKES CARE OF EVERYTHING!! Our tour guide “Big Mo” was one of the most passionate and insightful people I have ever met. His expertise of Egyptian history and the culture of his people is undeniable. He even went water sliding with me in Hurghada!! I cannot express how fortunate U feel to have had this experience in my lifetime. I was humbled by the people and inspired to see people with my likeness etched in massive stone and in the walls of the monuments and tombs. I met some of the most beautiful people inside and out in this country. They LOVE AMERICANS and they desperately need your tourism. I cannot say enough about this package that Encounters Travel has put together. All vehicles, hotels, restaurants and amenities they took us to were clean and safe. They include some meals the guides can be trusted. Be sure to give them the best tip you can at the end of the tour in AMERICAN MONEY....they will have earned it!! Now the bad....but you can’t escape these; IT’S HOT...no matter when you go (it’s Africa for goodness sake!) you will sweat all the time..so bring something to wipe your face like a few dark hand towels for daily use, hand sanitizer AND A HAND FAN...trust me some air is better then NONE and you can shield your face when the guides talk to you out in the sun but I recommend a fold away umbrella too TRUST ME!!! Only other thing is the street merchants..the first two days you are sympathetic to the plight after that you just instantly become a rude American and ignore them lol. They will try to pressure you, place things in your arm (I opened my arm and let them drop), give you a “free gift” (be warned NOTHING in Egypt is free) and try to pull you away from the group, always consult your guide they will help you steer clear and will help you to not get cheated. Last but MOST IMPORTANTLY when in the monuments, temples and other places NEVER LET A FRIENDLY PERSON HAVE YOU CAMERA TO TAKE PICS OF YOU...they will demand money and try to intimidate you and tell you they work for the Govt and wait for you at the gates if you don’t give them what you want. Just be polite and keep saying “no thank you while walking away” when you get close to your guide they will get the hint and leave you alone. Other than that..go have the TIME OF YOUR LIFE IN EGYPT!!! You will NEVER REGRET IT!

What a GREAT experience! I was a solo traveler and a bit worried but everyone at the office staff answered all my questions promptly assuring me I'd be in an English speaking group. I even missed my initial flight Nd Travel Encounters was able to coordinate my new transfer pick up time in Istanbul. The tour itself was also simply amazing, especially if you like History! Great sites with plenty to do, great itinerary including Troy, Galipoli, Blue Mosque, Haggai Sophia, Ephesus, Artemis, Kayakoy, etc. had a great/same guide and driver for the duration of he trip and all 4 star hotels. Nicely arranged trip, at a nice price. :)

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.
