Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Classic Nepal Tour?
The Classic Nepal Tour packs 15 days of contrasts into one well-paced itinerary: ancient Kathmandu durbar squares, a first-hand wildlife encounter in Chitwan National Park, the lakeside calm of Pokhara with its Annapurna panorama, a five-day Poon Hill trek through rhododendron forest and Gurung villages, and a final sunrise stop at Nagarkot overlooking the Himalayan range. Groups are capped at 12 travellers, which means you get real access to local experiences rather than a procession. If you want Nepal's headline sights plus a taste of trekking without committing to a full expedition, this tour delivers all of it.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Nepal?
Absolutely. The itinerary is built with first-timers in mind. You land in Kathmandu, acclimatise over two days of guided city exploration, then progress through lowland jungle (Chitwan), lakeside Pokhara, and a moderate five-day trek before finishing on a high at Nagarkot. Local English-speaking guides handle the logistics at every stage, so you never have to figure out Nepal on your own.
What is the difference between this and your other Nepal tours?
The Classic Nepal Tour (15 days) combines cultural sightseeing, a jungle safari and a moderate Poon Hill trek in one joined-up journey. Nepal Exposed is a shorter itinerary that covers the cultural and wildlife highlights without the five-day trek, making it the better fit for travellers who prefer lower physical demands or have less time. If you want to go deeper into the mountains with two high passes (Kang La at 5320m and Thorung La at 5416m), the Annapurna Circuit and Nar Phu Valley Trek (21 days) is the expedition-level option.
What is the best time of year to do the Classic Nepal Tour?
The two prime windows are October to November (post-monsoon: clear skies, fresh trails, excellent mountain views) and March to April (pre-monsoon: rhododendrons in bloom on the Poon Hill trail, still-stable weather). December to February is colder but quieter, and the lower elevations stay pleasant. The June to September monsoon brings heavy rain and leeches on the trail, so most travellers avoid that period.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Nepal tours floating around. What you are paying for here is 15 days of accommodation in hand-picked hotels and lodges, all internal transport (including the drive to and from Chitwan and Pokhara), a knowledgeable local guide throughout, Jeep safaris and a canoe ride in Chitwan National Park, a five-day guided Poon Hill trek with all trekking lodges included, a sunrise Nagarkot visit, and most meals on the trek. Running small groups of up to 12 also means a significantly more personal experience than a 40-seat bus tour.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 14 nights accommodation (hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara, Chitwan jungle lodge, trekking lodges on the Poon Hill circuit, Nagarkot hotel); all included transport; guided city tours of Kathmandu (Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath); Chitwan activities (Jeep safari, canoe safari, elephant breeding centre visit, cultural programme); five-day Poon Hill trek with licensed trekking guide and porters; Sarangkot sunrise viewing; meals as stated in the itinerary; and all government-required trekking permits and national park fees.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights; Nepal visa fee (payable on arrival at Kathmandu airport, check current rates on the Nepal Department of Immigration website); travel insurance; meals not specified in the itinerary; drinks; personal shopping; entrance fees to individual temples or pagodas in Kathmandu (small amounts per site); tips for your guide and driver (your guide will brief current recommended amounts at the start of the tour); and any optional extras you choose to add.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can secure your place with a deposit and pay the balance in full eight weeks before your departure date. If you prefer to pay later, the reserve-now-pay-later option lets you lock in your spot without paying immediately. Full payment options are shown at the checkout stage.
How physically demanding is the Classic Nepal Tour?
The tour is rated Fair, which means moderate. Most of the trip (Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara) is easy walking. The five-day Poon Hill trek involves daily walking of around 4-6 hours on well-maintained mountain trails, with the highest point at Poon Hill (3210m). You do not need prior trekking experience, but you should be comfortable walking uphill for several hours with a daypack.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
No problem at all for the cultural and wildlife sections. On the Poon Hill trek, the altitude (up to 3210m) can cause mild headaches for some travellers regardless of age, but it is well below the threshold where serious altitude sickness becomes a common risk. The pace is set to allow for acclimatisation. If you have any concerns about how the trek will suit you, call us before booking and we can give you an honest assessment.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The Kathmandu sightseeing and Chitwan wildlife activities can be adapted to some degree, but the five-day Poon Hill trek involves significant daily ascents and descents on uneven mountain paths that are not suitable for anyone with significant mobility limitations. If the trek is not possible for you, the Nepal Exposed tour covers the cultural and jungle highlights without trekking and may be a better fit. Please speak to us before booking.
How do you handle altitude on the trek?
Poon Hill sits at 3210m above sea level. At that altitude some travellers experience mild symptoms such as headaches or breathlessness, particularly on the day of ascent. The itinerary builds in acclimatisation time and the trek profile rises gradually. Your guide is trained to monitor the group. If symptoms are more than mild, the standard protocol is to descend to a lower altitude and rest. Ensure your travel insurance covers trekking to at least 3210m.
Is Nepal safe to visit right now?
Nepal is a well-established tourist destination and the trekking routes included on this tour are among the most travelled in the world. Petty theft can occur in busy tourist areas of Kathmandu, so normal urban precautions apply. Your guide will brief you on local awareness at the start of the tour. Check the latest UK Foreign Office or US State Department travel advice close to your departure date.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Nepal is generally considered one of the safer destinations in Asia for solo female travellers. The Poon Hill trekking circuit is busy with international visitors throughout the trekking seasons, and your group guide provides an additional layer of security. Solo female travellers join this tour regularly without incident.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide carries a first aid kit and knows the nearest medical facilities at each point on the itinerary. Kathmandu and Pokhara both have international-standard private clinics. On the trek, the protocol is to descend if altitude-related illness is suspected. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is compulsory, and we recommend a policy that explicitly covers trekking to 3210m.
Will I be hassled by vendors and touts?
Some persistent touting does occur around Kathmandu's main tourist sites such as Durbar Square and Thamel. Your guide will navigate the busiest areas with you and advise on firm but polite responses. The trekking trail and Chitwan are noticeably more relaxed. A confident 'no thank you' and continuing to walk is the most effective approach.
What is the accommodation actually like?
You stay in good mid-range hotels throughout. In Kathmandu the tour uses Hotel Thamel Park; in Chitwan, the Hotel Mona Lisa (a jungle lodge setting); in Pokhara, the Hotel Orchid; at Nagarkot, the Hotel Country Villa. On the trek, you stay in well-run trekking lodges along the Poon Hill circuit, which offer twin or dorm rooms with shared bathrooms. Standards on the trail are comfortable rather than luxurious, but adequate for a mountain environment.
What are the trekking lodges like?
Trekking lodges on the Poon Hill trail are small, family-run guesthouses. Most have twin rooms with basic but clean facilities. Hot showers are available at the majority, though water pressure and temperature vary. Electricity is available for charging devices in most lodges. Dining rooms serve hot meals including the Nepalese staple dal bhat (lentil soup, rice and vegetable curry) as well as pasta, noodles and egg dishes.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
The hotels in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Nagarkot all have Wi-Fi. In Chitwan and on the trekking trail, connectivity is patchy and sometimes non-existent. SIM cards with mobile data are inexpensive in Kathmandu and provide a useful backup, though coverage drops significantly once you are above lower-elevation villages.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
Upgrades to private or more luxurious accommodation in Kathmandu and Pokhara are available if you book the tour on a private basis. Trekking lodge accommodation on the Poon Hill trail is fairly standard across all operators; there is limited variation available. Contact us to discuss options if you have specific accommodation preferences.
What kind of food will we eat?
Nepali food is hearty and well-suited to travellers. Dal bhat (lentil soup with rice and vegetable curry) is the national staple and appears on almost every menu. Momos (steamed or fried dumplings) are a popular snack throughout the trek and in Kathmandu. Chitwan lodge meals are a mix of Nepali and international dishes. In Pokhara you will find a wide range of cuisines. On the trek, lodge dinners are simple but satisfying.
Can you cater for vegetarian vegan or gluten-free diets?
Vegetarian eating is straightforward in Nepal. Dal bhat is naturally vegetarian and available everywhere. Vegan options are also manageable, especially in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Gluten-free can be trickier at smaller trekking lodges where pasta and bread are common filler options, but rice-based dishes are always available. Inform us at the time of booking and your guide will communicate your dietary needs along the route.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water is not safe to drink anywhere in Nepal. Use sealed bottled water, or better still, bring a filtered water bottle such as a Water-to-Go bottle to reduce plastic waste. Most trekking lodges will fill filtered or boiled water on request. Your guide will advise on the safest sources at each stop on the trail.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Very. The group size is capped at 12 and the pace of the itinerary naturally creates a social atmosphere, particularly during the five-day trek. Many solo travellers join this tour and find the shared experience one of the highlights. If you want to branch out independently in Kathmandu or Pokhara, it is easy to do so on the free-time evenings.
Do I have to share a room?
Accommodation is based on shared twin rooms. A single supplement is available if you would prefer your own room throughout the hotels portion of the trip. On the trekking section, single rooms in lodges are not always guaranteed due to limited space in smaller mountain guesthouses. We will do our best to accommodate single room requests on the trail but cannot guarantee them at every lodge.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups run with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12 travellers. Most departures attract a mix of solo travellers, couples and small friend groups, typically in the 25-50 age range though all ages book this tour. The small cap means you will get to know your fellow travellers well, particularly on the trek.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The Classic Nepal Tour can be run as a private departure on flexible dates. Private bookings allow you to adjust the pace, extend stays in Kathmandu or Pokhara, or swap in different accommodation. Contact us with your preferred dates and party size for a tailored quote.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The wildlife and cultural sections are family-friendly, but the five-day Poon Hill trek requires a reasonable level of fitness and sustained walking. We recommend a minimum age of around 10-12 for the trekking component. For a family Nepal itinerary, contact us and we can design something to suit your group's ages and fitness levels.
Do I need a visa for Nepal?
Most nationalities, including UK, US, EU, Australian and Canadian passport holders, can obtain a tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. You will need a passport-size photo and the visa fee in cash. Check current fees on the Nepal Department of Immigration website before you travel, as they are subject to change.
What should I pack?
For Kathmandu and Chitwan: light summer clothing, modest dress for temple visits (shoulders and knees covered), sunscreen and insect repellent. For the Poon Hill trek: good walking boots (broken in), moisture-wicking layers, a warm fleece and windproof jacket (temperatures can drop to near-freezing at Poon Hill at dawn), a sleeping bag liner (lodges provide blankets but a liner adds warmth), and a headtorch. Nepal uses Type C and D plug sockets, so bring a universal adapter.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations for Nepal typically include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio. Rabies vaccination is worth discussing with your GP if you plan extended time outside urban areas. Malaria prophylactics are generally not recommended for the main trekking routes and cities covered on this tour, but consult your GP or a travel clinic for personalised advice based on your health history.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No, international flights are not included and you book them independently. Your arrival and departure point is Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu. If you would like help finding suitable flights, our team can point you towards options, but there is no obligation.
What about tipping?
Tipping is an important part of guide income in Nepal. A tipping kitty is not operated on this tour. Instead, your lead guide will brief the group on current recommended amounts for the main guide, local specialist guides and trekking porters at the start of the trip. Tips are given at the end of each relevant section.
How should I train for the Poon Hill trek?
The five-day Poon Hill circuit involves 4-6 hours of uphill and downhill walking per day on mountain trails. In the weeks before you travel, build up your fitness with regular brisk walks, especially on hills or stairs. If you have not done significant walking before, start training at least 6-8 weeks out and make sure your boots are properly broken in to avoid blisters.
Can I do the Everest Mountain Flight?
Yes. The Everest Mountain Flight is a popular add-on that departs from Kathmandu airport and gives you a close-up aerial view of Everest and the high Himalayan peaks on a clear morning. It is available as a paid extra and is best booked in advance as seats fill quickly during peak season.
Can I add a rafting trip on the Trisuli River?
Yes. White-water rafting on the Trisuli River is available as an optional extra during the Chitwan/Pokhara section of the tour. It is a popular adrenaline add-on that suits all levels of experience. Book in advance to secure availability.
Can I do a homestay in Panauti?
Yes. A Panauti Homestay is listed as an available option on this tour. Panauti is a well-preserved mediaeval town near Kathmandu with excellent examples of traditional Newari architecture. Staying with a local family gives a very different experience from a hotel and is one of the more memorable add-ons available.
Can I add a Bardia National Park extension?
Yes. The Bardia National Park Extension is available for those who want more in-depth wildlife time beyond Chitwan. Bardia is a less-visited park in western Nepal with excellent chances of spotting tigers and greater one-horned rhinos. It requires additional travel days but is a genuinely rewarding extension for wildlife enthusiasts.
How far ahead should I book?
October to November and March to April are peak trekking seasons in Nepal and popular departures can fill several months in advance. Booking 4-6 months ahead for peak season dates is advisable. Off-peak dates in winter (December to February) have more availability but still benefit from advance booking to lock in preferred rooms.
How does booking work?
Reserve online via the Dates and Prices page. You can pay a deposit to secure your place, use the reserve-now-pay-later option to hold it with no immediate payment, or pay in full. The balance is due eight weeks before departure. You will receive an instant confirmation email with full pre-departure information.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. Your policy must cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation and repatriation, and must be valid for trekking to at least 3210m (the altitude of Poon Hill). We recommend checking World Nomads Travel Insurance as a starting point. You will need to provide your policy details before departure.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale of cancellation charges applies depending on how far in advance you cancel. Full details are set out in our booking conditions. Encounters Travel is UK-registered and all customer funds are protected by Trust My Travel's financial protection scheme, giving you peace of mind that your money is secure.
What if my dates are already sold out?
Contact us to be added to the waitlist for your preferred departure. Alternatively, we can look at running the tour as a private departure on different dates to suit you, or suggest the Nepal Exposed tour or the Annapurna Circuit and Nar Phu Valley Trek if the dates work better for you.

A quite unique and interesting visit to Nepal and Bhutan. Overall the trip was two weeks of peak experiences although arrival and departure at Kathmandu airport were quite chaotic. The guided visits to key sites in Kathmandu were very high quality and informative. But without doubt the highlight was a week in Bhutan. Our guide, Rinzin, personalised the visit in so many memorable ways. There was a lot of time on the bus but there is no other way of getting to visit the myriad of historic places

We used Encounters Travel as the organizer for our Dec 2019 Everest Base Camp Trek in Nepal. They handled everything from the flight booking to the airport shuttle to the guide/porter arrangements. Their planning was well organized which allowed us to focus solely on getting through the physical challenges of the trek.
We were booked on Qatar Air which was nice for our 30+ hours of traveling each way. The hotel they had booked for us in Kathmandu was clean and comfortable with a very nice staff (and great location). Lastly, the guide & porter for our trek were absolutely fantastic. Dipesh (our guide) was professional and took time each day to discuss how we were feeling and address any concerns or questions that we had. I honestly do not think we would have made it to Base Camp if not for the expertise of Dipesh.
Encounters Travel made this trek much less stressful than it could have been, and on a trek that is stressful & difficult by its very nature, that was a relief. I don't often book travel with a tour company, but I will likely be coming back to Encounters Travel in the future. HIGHLY recommended.

I have just returned from the Nepal on a Shoestring Tour and I can highly recommend it. A fantastic, non-stop way to be introduced to Nepal; Kathmandu, Chitwan and Pokhara in 8 days. I added on an additional day at the start which did mean I had some quiet time before the action began! Our guide, Dipesh, who escorted us for the trip entirety was brilliant and very patient with our relentless questions! The bus trips between locations were long but a fantastic way to see the Nepalese countryside, you do need to be patient with the Nepalese roadways! I loved every minute and would highly recommend Encounters Travel and this tour. Now looking at my next trip with Encounters Travel!

My husband and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Encounters Travel for giving us the opportunity to experience the 10 Day Nepal Exposed Tour. Encounters Travel was great from even before the trip began in planning the trip, answering all our inquiries and providing us information in a timely matter. We would like to say this trip was phenomenal and left us both with memories and adventures that will last a lifetime.

We would like to give special recognition to our tour guide Ram Hari Aryal, who is a real professional and gave us individualized attention from the beginning of the trip when we arrived at the Kathmandu Airport to our departure back home. Ram really made this trip special for us and has such great knowledge of Nepal’s history, culture and geography. He also became a friend to us by the end of the tour.

The driver that accompanied us throughout the entire trip and drove us through the country deserves praise as well. He is polite and got out to open the door for us every time we stopped somewhere. He is a very good driver and we felt safe throughout the entire journey through the countryside.

In Kathmandu, we were assigned the same guide twice to show us through a few cities. His name was Prakash Luitel and he is wonderful and very knowledgeable of his country. The fellow who was our guide in Chitwan National Park was also very professional, energetic and friendly.

The accommodations were fabulous. All the hotels that we stayed in were great. We especially were impressed by Apsara Boutique Hotel in Kathmandu for their splendid rooms and exceptional staff. Another favorite of ours was Gaun Ghar located in Bandipur. We loved the décor of the hotel with stone floors and walls it gave us the feel that we were back in the 19th century. Also, great manager and staff that really made you feel at home. Not to mention the view of the mountains from our room that made us feel like we were in heaven.

We traveled through Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara, Bandipur and Nagarkot. My husband and I asked each other at the end of the trip which city did we like the best. The both us could not pick one. We liked all of them. They all had their unique and individual charm and beauty. These are a few of our many favorite highlights of the trip:

1. Everest Mountain Flight
2. Tour of Lalitpur aka Patan
3. Monkey Temple (Kathmandu)
4. Chitwan National Park wildlife safari
5. Boat ride on Phewa Lake (Chiwan)
6. World Peace Stupa (Pokhara)
7. Devi Falls (Pokhara)
8. Boudhanath Supa (Kathmandu)
9. Durbar Square (Kathmandu)
10. Pasupatinath (Kathmandu)

Every day was wonderful on this tour and a real adventure. We would love to take another tour again in the future and we would recommend Encounters Travel to our family, friends and coworkers.

Some (hopefully) constructive criticism: we recommend that you advertise to potential travelers the option of extra days in Kathmandu more prominently and frequently in your literature. We didn’t realize until much later that we could’ve extended our stay for such little cost. We would’ve done it if the option had emphasized.

Under Day 12, the “upgrade to an [sic] domestic flight” is misleading. We assumed that if we took the flight we wouldn’t miss anything on the agenda. Big mistake! Thank God we called your office and clarified that we’d not see Nagarkot, Bhaktapur, Pasupatinath and Boudhanath. What a loss that would’ve been!

Nepali toilets are not up to Western standards. A tip to bring one’s own toilet paper (and lots of it), and to prepare for horrific sights and smells, would’ve been appreciated.

We strongly urge you to include Lalitpur (Patan) in the Class Exposed itinerary. It doesn’t take so long to see and it’s well worth making time for. We also were a little disappointed that we couldn’t see Lumbini, Buddha’s birthplace.

Thank you again for an epic experience!

Encounters Travel/Uncover the World in the UK organised a trip to Nepal and Bhutan for me during Nov 2016.

When reviewing the various options out there I was impressed with their knowledge in the area and they were able to put together a good itinerary covering a good many sites across a number of regions. They organised hotels, transfers, guides and drivers as well as Bhutanese visas and flights between Nepal and Bhutan. Everything worked well and despite being a solo traveller I had a driver and guide during all my time in both countries. Hotels were good, comfortable, well located and entirely appropriate to this type of trip. The overall itinerary was excellent and I was able to see much of Bhutan - Thimpu, Paro and Punakha valleys - and some very interesting parts of Nepal - Kathmandu, Bhaktaput and Nagarkot - within some 11 days.

I booked the major international routes myself and used Oman Air who had by far the best connections to Kathmandu and a reasonable business class fare and Ant at Encounters booked the rest. Not a particularly cheap visit - Bhutan is possibly the most expensive country in the world to visit - but I can't see how I could have done it better or cheaper.

I'd certainly use these guys again for this type of trip - they really know their business.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Accommodation

  1. Hotels in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Bandipur
We use comfortable tourist class hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara (approx. 3 star). The hotels in Bandipur are at a slightly lower level but make up for it with some great mountain views.
  1. Trekking with lodges
For this lodge-based trek, we will use a variety of Lodges and Teahouses. In recent years many new lodges have sprung up and many offer quite good facilities and amenities.  However, in some areas the lodges can be run on a very simple basis where toilets and washing facilities are outside the building. We can’t promise that you will always have full amenities all the time, so you should understand this before embarking on this trek.

Staying in lodges gives you more comfort overnight than camping, and also allows you to meet up with and talk with other trekkers and guides at the end of the day. It also allows us to put more back into the local economies than if we were bringing everything with us.

Rooms in lodges are normally based on same sex sharing of twin rooms (though couples and families will be able to share).  Some sheets & blankets are provided but a sleeping bag is still required. We provide the option to hire a sleeping bag in our trekking pack option, though you may still wish to bring your own inner sleeping bag liner or sleep sheet if you wish.  Warm showers are available for a small fee at most lodges, though these may be bucket showers higher up.
  1. Safari lodges in Chitwan National Park
At Chitwan National Park, we use safari lodges with comfortable clean rooms and en-suite bathrooms.   We normally use lodges in and around the village of Sauraha on the edge of the park, which increases the number of activities you can do while at the park.

Please check the Single Room Supplement option for details on room sharing options and charges for solo travellers on this tour.
